"Best movie of 2008 will be Pineapple Express"
Tue Jul-17-07 12:22 AM by SoulHonky

Just got out of a screening for the new Apatow/Rogan film and it was the funniest film I've seen in years. I wasn't a huge fan of Knocked Up but this movie was hilarious. James Franco and Danny McBride steal the show but this is going to be huge.

It's not coming out for a year but it is absolutely amazing.

It has Gary Cole, Bill Heder, Craig Robinson (Darryl from the Office), Joe LoTruglio from The State, etc, No Segal, Hill, or the rest of that crew.

EDIT: Also, Rosie Perez.

Still, I haven't walked out of a movie this impressed in a long time. The trailer for Walk Hard also played. It looked funny but I'm not sure if will be at this (or Anchorman's) level.

The action scenes are great and the pitch is perfect. I'm not a huge fan of Rogen's crude for crude's sake humor but that was toned down. It was a rough cut so some of the stuff will be trimmed but he did a good job. You aren't going to sit there and say "Wow, great direction!" but you never should in a comedy.

It was understated but quality.

Y'know, normal ass guy(s) unwittingly dragged into the middle of a nightmarish, comedic day of adventure. (Something Wild was over the span of a couple days, but events exploded one right after another, so it seemed like it happened in a real short time span.)

From the multi-character chase premise down to Seth Rogen's suit, I'm (optimistically) thinking it has similarities to those two movies.

Care to validate those suspicions?

I was there. not sure if how Rogen put it together after witnessing the crime would have worked, but pot smoker paranoia might have done it.

Didn't like the girlfriend's scene in the hotel, thought that needed a re-shoot.

I also thought it needed to a bit more violent, maybe it will be after post.

But I enjoyed it. And I got to meet Judd that night too. I've met everyone now except Franco and Rogen from Freaks and geeks.

In response to Reply # 7

He's a funny dude; usually, the filmmakers all sneak in after the lights go down, but this cat showed up about 15 minutes before the movie started, found a spot to sit, got up, changed to another spot, then got up again and changed to another spot, then finally settled on a spot once Jake Kasdan arrived.

After reading that NY Times piece before Knocked Up came out, and after seeing the mics at the Walk Hard screening (I'm assuming they were also present for this one), it finally dawned on me that Apatow conducts screenings as if they were sitcom run-throughs, where he gets feedback on jokes then goes back to the lab and makes adjustments.

I'm not sure how much more violent they can really get. I thought the weak part was Cole and Rosie's characters. The girlfriend couldn't act so her scenes were lame but the phone call he makes to her was one of the highlights of the film.

In response to Reply # 12

As for the movie itself I remember liking Franco and McBride but just found the premise to be a bit too ludicrous (SPOILER)(the way Rogen's discovered by Gary Cole and Rosie Perez was a problem for me, since it is the "inciting incident" in the film and I just found it to be too convenient)... however, there were a couple of very funny setpieces but the cut I saw ran a bit too long for my taste... I'm sure it's been cut down to size by now...

Also, EW is reporting that Seth Rogen recently broke bread with Huey Lewis to try and get him to do the movie's theme song

That scene is one of the first in the film and the movie becomes a kind of caper movie a few moments later.

Ah, yeah that was definitely something I wasn't expecting from the few seconds of the scene in the trailer. I could easily see myself laughing a lot at that even if I knew it was coming, but I guess I'll have to wait until the movie comes out to see.

I hadn't liked him in any of his previous flicks but he was great in this. Danny McBride hadn't impressed me much before this either but both those guys consistently stole scenes from Rogen. And that's not taking anything away from Rogen either because this might be his best performance to date as well.

I met David Gordon Green @ a Snow Angels premiere & while I wasn't a huge fan of that flick, he gave off a great vibe that he'd be a good guy to have behind the scenes for a new twist on the stoner flick genre. Wasn't sure how well the action scenes would correlate but he did a great job. You can tell everyone involved had a lot fun making this, but not too much fun that they didn't take it seriously like some of the Ocean flicks.

It's 1 of those movies you'll probably end up seeing twice in the theaters because you'll miss a lot of jokes from the audience laughing the 1st time. Great soundtrack as well. Especially the placement of the PE & Bob Marley tracks. I wish Gary Cole would've had a little more screen time & Rosie Perez seemed to be the only questionable casting choice but other than that it was great & I've got no complaints. It's tops on my list of stoner comedies.

...but I can say that this movie was fucking awesome. I am really surprised critics seem to not be liking this as much as previous Apatow camp efforts. It has heart, it's hilarious, it's shot really well, and the action just ups the ante and makes everything even funnier.

Certainly the best comedy I've seen in '08.

I want to talk about this movie with people. Ask me questions.

I caught the midnight showing last night. We got to the theatre blowed, and noticed the amount of people outside and got a bit worried. Got out of the car and were told the film was sold out by some teens in the parking lot.
As we were driving off, I decided to just check anyway. Turns out it was mostly sold out but there were still seats. Just wasn't likely to find groups of seats together.
I was with 4 friends, so I got the 5 tickets and we got in but weren't all able to sit together.

Theatre was wall to wall 16 year olds.
The fuck happened to curfew?

So the movie was cool, I guess.
It was really trying to be a real movie. I wasn't expecting that.
Way too many of the jokes and gags were shown in the trailers and commercials. The parts that would've had me busting up were things I'd already seen.

The other thing that was kinda whatever was that it was so much just based on the interaction of the two main characters. Dale (Rogen) was the same person he's been in every other movie, except this time he had a cool/funny job. Saul (Franco) was just a dumb stoner who said dumb stoner shit.

What I did like was that it seemed pretty realistic in the chase/run/escape aspect. The dealers and cops didn't waste any time trying to catch these two. Lots of movies they spend too much time trying to figure out the identities and things seem to take days and weeks of trying to catch someone they should've been done caught. In this one, the next morning they're at these dudes' throats already which was cool. They didn't waste time explaining and interrogating and all the nonsense. They were on their shit.

I also liked that they didn't explain why things were happening. They just were. We didn't need to know why/how Rosie Perez was wrapped up in this drug war, she just was. Dale and Saul didn't know either. That wasn't the point. She was trying to kill them -- that's all that really mattered.

I feel like I maybe need to see the movie not high. The pacing seemed to lag at some points but it might've just been the weed. I'm pretty sure it was a combination of the weed and the movie's actual pacing.

They should've done more with Dale's job throughout the movie and less with Saul's stonerisms.

My feelings right now are to give it a B, or B-.
It didn't take itself too seriously, but definitely more seriously than I expected.

I need to see it again, sober, but I'm worried it won't be funny at all when I see it again.

Caught an advanced screening last week. I'm a big fan of Rogen and Apatow, I think Knocked Up and Superbad will be seen as two of the best comedies of the decade, and I was highly looking forward to this.

Problem was, it just wasn't really that funny. I'd describe it more as consistently mildly amusing. Not too much focus on jokes, more focus on humerous characters. The funniest parts were in the previews. The comedy was often reduced to extended scenes of weak/contrived slapstick, and seemed to rest comfortably on the questionable conclusion that it's always funny when old people or asians say "fuck".

Movie has focus problems too. It wasn't quite a comedy, not quite a character study, not quite an action film...the movie swayed and wandered into each of these regions for seemingly random periods of time.

The movie works best when it's a quirky adventure of two interesting and funny characters as they come closer and become friends, and if they stuck with that concept the movie would have been much tighter, almost Wes Anderson-esque. The characters are interesting, sympathetic and likeable. But instead of just using the drug-dealer murder subplot as a catalyst for that human connection, they put so much focus on it that the movie becomes a weak action movie instead of a strong character comedy.

The last scene in particular was at least twenty minutes too long (you'll get what I mean when you watch it) and didn't really add anything to character development or plot at all...it just kept going...it was kind of a send-up of action movie climaxes, but veered into the early Beastie Boys territory of accidentally becoming your subject of parody.

Franco was excellent. Worth seeing simply for his creation of Saul. There are other good characters as well. It's not a bad movie, I recommend you check it out, but I'd put it at the bottom of the Apatow vehicles I've seen:

1. Knocked Up
2. Superbad
3. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
4. 40 Year Old Virgin
5. Pineapple Express

I never did see Walk Hard. But that movie looked fucking dumb. Did you see it? Was I wrong?

Anyhow, I might have just gone in with expectations too high. If that's the case, I hope this review helps you not to do the same, and maybe you'll end up enjoying it more. That's be decent.

Personally, I've always thought that the character development and plots of Knocked Up and Superbad were the weakest parts of the film so I was more than happy that they pushed that aside and went full steam ahead with the comedy. Oddly enough, the one film in which the plot and character development worked best IMO was 40 Year Old Virgin, which you had as the second worst Apatow film.

While I disagree with you about the character development of Knocked Up and Superbad, all these films are quite different (which I think is a testament to Apatow's achievements), and what works for one doesn't necessarily work in another.

The thing is, they didn't go full steam ahead with the comedy. They went at cruising speed. That was my major complaint. If they kept it as it was but had more actual Knocked Up-level jokes and gags in it I'd be cosigning it like you are.

But...they really didn't. The jokes were much more mild than laugh out loud funny.

Because I laughed out loud at stuff in Pineapple Express while I just chucked at Knocked Up and Superbad. I thought the foot through the windshield and his 180 when his girlfriend says "I Love You" were funnier than anything in the other two movies.

And yes, I do think sometimes you have to know something about a film to really get it. If I had walked into Live Free or Die Hard without forewarnings about it being over-the-top, I would probably have been groaning the whole time about how ridiculous it was.

But they were BOTH in the trailer. All the very funny parts were. Unlike say, Knocked Up, where almost every line was some sort of punchline.

What gags did I like from Knocked Up? Off the top of my head, I liked "I can't let you in this club 'cause you old as fuck. For the club. Not, you know, for the world. Trust me, I would tear. that. ass. up." His whole scene was hilarious. But more than specific scenes, every other line was crafted to make people laugh...having throwaway lines like "see you Scorcese-on-coke" or "you look like a cholo on Easter" in every conversation shows the movie had so much joke-juice you coulnd't possibly show it all in the previews.

A movie should be able to stand on it's own. I didn't have any problems with the plot being ridiculous, my issue with the plot was that they spent too much time in gunfights and car chases to concentrate on the funny.

My friend is like you and prefers to throw out as many jokes as possible and keep them going. I prefer fewer jokes, more build-up, and don't mind if we go a bit without a punchline. I think the voids amplify the laughs (although a few of the lulls in Pineapple Express were too long).

I felt like most of Knocked Up was throwaway lines and they didn't get much out of the situations themselves. I prefer the actions scenes then leading into a joke.

-40 YO Virgin was moderately funny the whole way through.
-Knocked Up was laugh out loud constantly the first time, then the second time you just realize that theyre only making fun of each other and that's not really that funny. Won't stand the test of time.
-Superbad was super bad. I guess it was funny that they named the movie Superbad and I still saw it. Joke's on me. You had the penis-drawings and then an hour and a half of absolute shit. Little high school kids are not funny.

The only guy out of the whole clique that I find funny is the fat dude with the curly red hair (main dude in Knocked Up). But he's nothing extraordinary, just the most likeable in the group with occassionally funny things to say.

but one question, how does it compare to other Stoner movies? is it between Harold & Kumar and Cheech and Chong, or is it a movie by it self? I heard ( and read ) the movie is taking it self too seriously when it comes to the action and plot. Anyways, I doubt I'll be too disappointed, I mean, I liked Walk Hard, so I guess I can like this one too.

not at all - exact opposite in fact. just from the opening scene you will know that it isn't taking itself too seriously at all wrt the action and plot.

and yeah it is very much its own movie. it's pretty much one of those movies that's impossible not to like.

There were times when I literally lost my breath from laughing too hard. I really don't understand why the general public's initial reaction isn't as positive for this flick as it was for Knocked Up or Superbad because, to me, it was just as good, if not better. Franco brings back his comedic flair from Freaks & Geeks, and McBride proves he'll be a comedic force to be reckoned with for years to come. This movie gets funnier with every passing minute too. Funniest physical/action scenes I've ever seen, that's for sure, but that's not to say the dialogue wasn't on par, by any means.

this one definitely veered away more from the formula that these Apatow movies seem to have set for themselves, but my god it's funny. It's camp, it's slapstick, it's never really serious except in the "buddy" sense, but even that is just ridiculous.

The direction is hilarious and has fingerprints of David Gordon Green all over it -- I was really looking for that and I'm super glad it showed up.

Rogen was Rogen. James Franco turned in the best "stoner" performance I've ever seen.

Someone up above is complaining about the final scene? That shit had me DYING. This movie was incredible.

I'm not even a pothead, but I swear I might smoke pot just to watch this movie.

LOVED IT.

I can understand issues with pacing or the film not being the standard Apatow "Just keep lobbing jokes and hope most of them hit" but I can't quite grasp the complaints about the plot. It seems like a lot of people have it and I've been thrown by it.

What's the issue? This is a big dumb summer comedy. How many of them have great plots? Superbad was three guys go to get beer, hijinks ensue. Knocked Up was a shlub impregnates hot girl, hijinks ensue. The plot to me seemed like a standard action film issue and the over-the-top stuff played as parody.

---

As for the falling apart thing, that appears to be just a difference in sense of humor since some people seem to think it drags and others think it gets better as it goes.

On a related note, what did you think of 40 YO Virgin? Did you like Knocked Up and Superbad better?

Seriously.

A 1 inch roach? C'mon.

On top of that, the Rosie Perez character was never explained, Bobby Lee just seemed to be there, and yeah while it might have been parody...it was just overkill at a certain point. Seemed like the last half hour was the action scene. Just yawnworthy.

It had it's moments, but no...overall...just wack.

And I loved 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad (not sure how I'd rank them, but I loved them all).

this movie was NEVER meant to be serious.

Much like the Big Lebowski is a film noir with an epic loser for the PI instead of a regular private dick, Pineapple Express is a buddy action flick, only if the buddies were slacker potheads. It's like Lethal Weapon, only if Lethal Weapon was a stoner movie.

Yeah, the plot is ridiculous. The Asian gang is absolutely over the top and show up rather randomly at the end just to add to the action. The cops are just corrupt and we don't know why. John (was it John? the villain) gets into a "gang war" by just calling them and freaking out. Item 9 is just loosely thrown in there and never truly referenced until you see the same hatch at the end.

BUT THIS IS THE TYPE OF STUPID, UNEXPLAINED STUFF THAT HAPPENS IN STUPID ACTION MOVIES ALL THE TIME

It's rather clearly a parody. Red being inexplicably invincible parodies along with this (and actually I thought making it a three-way buddy flick as opposed to your standard partners movie was pretty funny, too).

It's ridiculous. It has unexplained holes. Absolutely impossible things happen routinely. I'm pretty certain that's the POINT.

I mean, if you didn't like it, okay, but taking the plot to task seems unfair.

The end of the film had me cracking up. It was such an over-the-top scene. Maybe people are so used to ludicrous action scenes that they didn't see it as parody. I thought one of the funniest parts of the film was how Danny McBride kept getting shot and coming back.

And I agree about Rosie. Most henchmen come out of absolutely nowhere. It's like there are just hundreds of corrupt special forces units waiting around for bad guys to call them. Corrupt cops and female villains almost never have back story.

And like I wrote on the link below, it's a stupid comedy. If you are thrown by plot holes like them using a one inch roach to find the guys, you might as well walk out of the theater because you just aren't in the right mindset to enjoy the film. (Not to mention, it's always some small insignificant thing that puts cops/PI's on the track of killers in a lot of action films)

From reading interviews (specifically Seth Rogen's Onion AV Club one--link below)...it sounds like "Hot Fuzz" was a big inspiration for where they wanted to go with the tone on this.

I would say that the action scenes in "Hot Fuzz" were by and large done better, but I can definitely understand what they were shooting for (pardon the godawful pun).

Saul was the only guy in town with pineapple express which he got from Red who was the only guy that Ted Jones (the main drug dealer)gave it to. Ted picked up the joint, took a puff, and knew it was pineapple express then went straight to Red b/c that was the only person anyone could have got it from. It makes perfect sense.

It's also making fun of the action movie staple of some small innocuous clue turning out to be what makes a huge difference. As I've said, if someone sees that moment and thinks "That's ridiculous. What a terrible plot device.", they should just leave the theater because they aren't going to like the movie.

too much babble between the characters.
what happened to actual jokes man?
i say the funniest thing was how dale dressed up to serve people.
that's a good funny joke.
other than that though, these dudes just rant and cuss and say random shit. no cleverness or wit really.
just "i said something weird. now laugh".
that's the problem with lettin cats improvise. they can get indulgent.
it's funny at times but overkill mostly.
the action was dope though.

It was definately the worst one of all the recent Apatow/Rogen movies. I only laughed hard twice. The rest of the times were just soft laughter. Of all the recent movies, I'd rank them like this:

1) Superbad
2) Knocked UP
3) Forgetting Sarah Marshall
4) Pineapple Express

This one was by far the least funny. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, it just wasn't nearly as funny as the other movies.

That was one of the parts I laughed hard at. When he got out of that car and shot the guy's foot off after he was already dead killed me. That, and when Franco broke that big piece of wood over Rosie Perez' back were the only really funny parts to me.

Franco and McBride really make the movie.

Green did a good job and the lighter moments are about perfect but he could have a done a better job with the visual gags (finding a new AK-47 the second Rogen's runs out of ammo for example could use more punch).

Franco was hilarious. best reason to see the movie. McBride did his thing as well.

Rogen was fine but I'm actually kind of tired of seeing him in leading roles. same old same old.

the comedic action was hit or miss to me -- some parts were really great, other times it seemed drawn out (a lot of the ending).

outside of McBride, I wasn't crazy about the supporting cast. great to see Craig Robinson on the big screen but him and Corrigan were mostly just okay. same for Rosie and Gary Cole.

for a typical stoner chase movie, it was better than Knocked Up but I laughed more during Superbad.

It's good for a viewing for two, but I prolly wouldn't go for three.

For me, there's something about these flicks like "Step Brothers" and "Anchorman" that just don't call for repeat viewings.

It feels too much like improv. Like they have a basic plot that they have to adhere to... some set pieces, but they freestyle the bulk of it.
And after that, I kinda feel cheated. I dunno.

Check it out, though.
Maybe you do have to burn on e to get the full effect.

My favorite line might have been at the end when they said "It's a miracle that we got out of there, and that we all became such good friends and that we all learned a little something about life in the process." Brilliant parody of the end of every action flick ever.

And even Knocked Up doesn't seem as rewatchable as Superbad and 40 YOV.

I'd put this on the same tier as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. There were a half dozen or so moments where I laughed my ass off for more than just a second or two. And I'm okay with that. It was a solid comedy.

Franco and McBride were excellent and Rogen was good as the relative straight man. I enjoyed Craig Robinson's performance a lot. He brought more than Corrigan did.

And Bill Heder did a great job in the opening scene.

But I agree with everyone who said as a parody Hot Fuzz works better. Hot Fuzz was one of my favorite movies of 2007. Hell it's one of my favorite movies period. I wasn't really expecting Pineapple Express to be that great. It's first and foremost a stoner movie also trying to be a parody of action films. At some point it was going to drag because the action scenes weren't going to be done justice without the budget for it.

I'd give it a solid B/B-

Really loosely done, several supporting cast members are totally wasted, and at times the tonal shift is more jarring than funny. But some scenes stand out, especially anything with McBride in it.

The final scene in the diner is probably the funniest bit of the whole film. It made me wish we got more of that sort of repor throughout the film, rather than some of the more-forced banter we got.

Still, I got my laughs.

I understand why people wanted to see it. Personally, I was there because it was a DGG film.

But this was overhyped in the same way that Knocked Up was in the sense that the movie wasn't quite a laugh riot that everyone hyped it up to be.

It's very funny..............but it's not the best comedy of the year so far. I'd say that belongs to Forgetting Sarah Marshall still. That being said, I'm glad that the movie is still pretty good because that means we'll probably get to see more DGG movies in the future.

Superbad, Knocked Up, and 40 Year Old Virgin were all better though, but still, this Apatow knows what the hell he is doing.

I don't even know how to classify this movie: a stoner action flick?

wow.
yeah, i laughed. but most of the time i was bored stiff. it was 'loose' and felt so.
too bad because it had elements of greatness (Franco, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride).
i skipped out on work for this and wished i hadn't. and i hate my fucking job.

only about two or three decent laughs in the entire flick. total waste of time and money.

lol, I like retarded films sometimes and i needed a pick me up after watching Wall-e(which i don't like that much). Funnier than Tropic Thunder. But if TT's second half had been as good as it's first it would have been miles ahead of PE.
