My biggest fear going in was that they were going to take away those things that I happen to shamelessly dig about Bond movies, those things that I mentioned in the initial post here: the gadgets, the corny puns, the supervillains, the girls, the over-the-top action sequences, the explosions, etc. I really don't need to see Bond grounded in reality, or toned down.
Thankfully they kept those things that I liked, but simply decided to introduce or utilize them in different ways, which was fine. Though I did think the first chase scene went on a bit too long. But it was still fun and sufficiently over-the-top for me.
I understand the complaints about there being "too much love/romance," but as some have already pointed out, we had to see (and earn) the sufficient motivation for Bond to become what he's going to later become... you could clearly tell where Haggis' fingerprints were regarding the snappy dialogue between Bond and Vesper (or at least it seemed that way... it'd be funny if we learn on the DVD commentary that he didn't write that stuff at all)... did anyone catch the sly nod to the Bond girl names of the past, when Bond told Vesper he'd call her by a different name, something like Eva Chestout or something... and was it just me, or did he refer to ol' girl as a bitch late in the film, after it was all over?
I liked that the Eurotrash villain's stakes were more personal this time out, as opposed to having a super evil master plan to blow something up or seize control of something...
Why were folks hating on Martin Campbell? He only made what was the last best Bond "reboot" movie, Goldeneye, and has also done other quality work, such as The Mask of Zorro (yes, it was cool, stop frontin') and Vertical Limit. Surely we're not holding Beyond Borders against him?
And what was up with M starting every other sentence with "What the hell...?" Judi Dench looked like she was having a great time...
Fellas... the torture... yeah.
The theme sucked.
I missed Q. Perhaps we'll see him in the next one.
The more I think about it, the more critical I'll get (I'm hung over), but for now I'll say it was gritty, gutty, elegant, intelligent, and action-packed. Certainly the best Bond film since Goldeneye, and had 10-15 minutes been trimmed, it could be considered to be the best Bond film ever. ________________________________________________________________________ Thank you, Bo. Sorry we couldn't get it done.
