So this week is the return of Superman.....and it's about damm time.

I remember the announcement of the next Superman film ("Superman Lives", "Superman Reborn", etc.) and the news/rumors behind the film. Tim Burton was supposedly directing, Nic Cage was playing Superman, Chris Rock was playing Jimmy Olsen, Lex and Braniac were involved (now that I didn't mind), a possible "Death Of Superman" story with Doomsday and some changes were going to be made to Superman. I wore the fabric of hate when it came to the casting rumors (ESPECIALLY Nic Cage), but there were a lot of things with the story that really made go wtf (Ex: when Kevin Smith talked about his work on the movie script and the damm robot spider that Jon Peters wanted.).

A couple of years pass and we have more drama and the revolving door of directors (Michael Bay, Brett Ratner, McG, etc.) and screenplay writers. When some of the details of the many scripts surfaced, I couldn't believe most of it (see: J.J. Abrams's bad script). While some scripts had Braniac involved in some way (Supes shouldn't fight Lex 24-7), some had Lex being revealed as a Kryptonian, Krypton never blowing up, and other wtf moments. When Ratner was involved before Singer and wanted Tom Welling from "Smallville" to play Superman and Anthony Hopkins to play Jor-El, I thought that it would have been cool to see that (and the Alex Ross picture of Tom as Superman was pretty damm good). When that fell though, I didn't think that a Superman movie would be made for a long time after all the money spent on this.

But after 17 years in development hell, we finally get to see a new Superman movie.....

Just like "Superman Lives", there were things that I didn't care for. The main things that I had beef with were A: the damm costume and B: the story (Lois having a kid? A sequel to "Superman" and "Superman II"? LOIS HAVING A KID?). As much as I didn't want to see Supes with no powers fighting a damm robot spider, my interest in this movie wasn't that big at first. I wanted to see a rebooted movie like "Batman Begins" or one based on S:TAS (hell, you have a decent origin story in the show). But thanks to the trailers and behind the scenes, my interest did increase big time. The casting didn't bother me that much.....I always thought that Kevin Spacey would make a great Lex. I understand why Bryan Singer wanted a newcomer and even though it would have been cool to see Welling as Superman, Brandon Routh is a good choice.

Part of me is still a bit skeptical about it (and the damm suit still bothers me), but I will definitely check it out. Maybe we'll see a "World's Finest" movie with Christian Bale's Batman or a Justice League movie if it's successful....or another wait for a better Superman movie if it sucks.
