"Spider-Man"

(is it Spider-Man or Spiderman?)

this movie was fun.

I'm not a great review writer or anything, so bear with me, but this movie was one of the most enjoyable I've seen in a while. There's just something about seeing some fucker in a red and blue suit swinging around NYC that does it for me. Sure you know it's CGI, but I was too busy being too geeked to worry about all of that. The web swinging done pretty well, with some exhilarating moments were you think to yourself, "if that was my ass, I'd be vomiting all inside my mask".

The acting was good, as Tobey Maguire seems to have the "goofy quiet guy with a heart of gold" role on lock. Kirsten Dunst mostly plays the "damsel in distress" role in this movie, but that was pretty much expected. J. Jonah Jameson (played by...J.K. Simmons if I remember correctly) was perfect...talks too fast, insults everyone, and has a fucked up haircut. Willem "my parents can't spell William" Dafoe, played uh...the foe decently, although it was kinda cheesy with him talking to himself and what not.

The movie had some hilarious scenes where Peter first gets used to his powers, though it took a surprisingly darker tone at the end (even with a nod to the Gwen Stacy story) They set up the origin perfectly, with one complaint: A whole bunch of students (including MJ) see Peter walking out with a school tray stuck to his webbing...one would think that later on, she would think "oh fuck, you're spiderman!" But that complaint probably applies to every superhero story, so whatever.

For all you number junkies, I give it an 8/10.

I dare say it's probably my new favorite comic book movie. But maybe that's just my Marvel bias, lol.

i think i've always preferred marvel.

i wonder if anyone would ever dare tackle the 'silver surfer', 'thor', and 'the avengers'. having the 'vision' in a film would be dope. i think i read somewhere that the rights to 'thor' were picked up by miramax. not sure though. and i know that the 'hulk', 'daredevil', and maybe even the 'punisher' are up for getting the treatment. stan lee said in some interview that he wants 'the punisher' to be depicted correctly. to do so, it better have more than a pg-13 rating though. don't know if that would happen in hollywood.

"Rhythm is the architecture of being, the inner dynamic that gives it form, the pure expression of the life force. Rhythm is the vibratory shock, the force which, through our senses, grips us at the root of our being. It is expressed through corporeal and sensual means; through lines, surfaces, colors, and volumes in architecture, sculpture, or painting; through accents in poetry and music, through movements in the dance. But doing this, rhythm turn all these concrete things toward the light of the spirit. In the degree to which rhythm is sensuously embodied, it illuminates the spirit...Only rhythm gives the word its effective fullness; it is the word of God, that is, the rhythmic word, that created the world."

i just got done watching it. wow, what a great movie. it was much better than i expected. the clips didn't give me a really good idea and the people on this site said it was okay, but i thought it was better than that. two problems though: when the green goblin was asking spidey to join him, the mask's mouth didn't move, which looked a little cheesy (not a big problem though), and the fight scene at the end was a little cliche. i mean bad guy beats up good guy, then says something that upsets good guy, then good guy comes back and finishes bad guy. those are minor problems though. i'm still gonna see it again and again. organic webs was a great idea (i've always wondered why the comic book made his webs artificial. i can't wait for the sequel. i'd give the movie an A.

one more thing...there's like 4-5 batman and superman movies, so hopefully they make that many good spiderman movies. of the batman/superman movies, only the last batman movie sucked in my opinion. i like how they followed the comic book and let harry know spiderman killed his father. and mj at the end (i won't give it way for those who haven't seen it)!!!

I think Dolph Lundren starred in the film adaptation of The Punisher. It didn't make any money because of it's content, but I'm sure they made a Punsiher movie.

Its a decent comic because its alot darker then most of marvels other titles. However, the Punisher is a walking cliche of every straight to cable action movie. An ex cop family is killed by a bunch of criminals, and he dedicates his life to vigilante justice. There's no way they can make that work just because its been done to death already.

i didnt think it was perfect but I dug it. I had really high expectations. The thing is that I compare every comic book flick to the first Batman. And contrary to what some people on this post are saying, the first Batman is the greatest comic book flick of all time IMHO. And by that comparison this comes up a little short.

My biggest fear before seeing this movie is that it was going to by all style and no substance but it turned out to be a really decent story (true to the comic for the most part) but i wanted a liiiiitle more action.

other than that and the tiresome Matrix dodge the bullet scene i thought it was dope

And big ups to Vern Schillinger as Jameson

We all know that most comic book movies suck, especially from Marvel. Funny how DC seems to make good adaptation of their comics, but then again they've been around longer. Anyway, Spider-Man doesn't suck.
Though they didn't follow the Spider-Man storyline completely to form (cuz we all know when Green Goblin came out, Pete's girlfriend was Gwen Stacey), it did stay true to the heart of the Spidey saga. If you are a fan of the comic/cartoon(s), you will enjoy this ride Raimi has taken us on. Even if you're not a fan, you will be entertained (if you remember that this is a movie and a form of entertainment. There is no REAL message in here. You want a message, see Boyz n Da Hood...).

The director of High Fidelity once said if actors give bad performances, it's because they were casted wrong. Going with that, Spider-Man was casted perfectly. Toby is Peter Parker (for those that would think otherwise, you need to catch up on your origins aka the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko one). J.K Simons (sp) was PERFECT as J. Jonah Jameson. Willem DaFoe did a wonderful job as the Green Goblin.

The pacing could have been better but it wasn't as bad as Phantom Menace. GG's mask...the jury is still out. For the fans, listen to Peter's recent unemployment woe. Wrestling fans, watch for the wrestling match. All in all...good movie.

Had you been able to see his mouth move it woulda worked. But when he goes off on that "join me spidey" monologue with the close up, it just looks like his mouth was hanging open....and that bothered me.

good movie.

the romantic moments were a little too long in some parts (would've been better listed on the dvd under deleted or extended scenes) for this kind of movie, but overall it was good.

didn't care for the major loophole about how nobody on the board knew who the villian was...

for starters, having to look at kirsten dunst for 2 hrs ain't exactly healthy for the eyes

bad writing: shit was just lame everytime there was any lengthy dialogue

bad acting: save for cat playing jamison & dafoe at times, everyone's performance was subpar

bad costumes: goblin's suit was awful

it had it's moments w/ the CGI stuff (which was well done) and goblin had some funny one liners but the flick was bad

for the people dogging the film, i doubt many of them read the comics. of course, there are a few departures. but seriously, this is hollywood y'all. the movie needed to mix it up. drama, romance, action, a bit of corniness. but really, all of those elements can be found in the spiderman comics. if stan lee likes it, that should be enough. being the creator, i'm sure he would have a major bone to pick had he not liked the film. i don't believe that anyone else could have done a better job.

24. "Good Flick"
In response to Reply # 0

I must say that I am widly surprised. I secretly went into the theater prepared to bash this flick(Considering Avi Arid sanctioned that god-awful Mutant X tv show).

But, dammit if Sam Raimi didn't do a pretty good job at telling the origin. Considering it has a PG-13 rating, they did a good job at having some good ol' fashioned violence. The CGI was almost flawless(save for 2 spots where it was almost painfull to see where the last of the $100 mil ran out).

Yes, there are a few incredibly chessy moments and some of the dialogue is kinda chunky, but all in all, I felt pretty good about it. Certainly better than I felt after coming out of X-MEN, that's for damn sure.

I would gladly reccommend you go see this flick. Hell, I can't lie. I was geeked as all hell when I was sitting in that theater and the title appeared.

One last thing: Look at the gravestones when you see this flick(if you haven't already). I could have sworn one of them said "Rest In Peace Gwen."

There were all kinda slick references to the comic in this flick, thats what made it so damn good. Jonah clowning Eddie's photos of Spider-Man (We all know Eddie Brock becomes Venom). Pete's like I got fired by Dr. Conors for being late (Dr.Connors becomes the Lizard). I peeped the man Stan Lee in the Parade scene, a decent flick for regular movie goers, a love letter of much detail to fans of the comics. B+ for Average Joe, A for Comic BooK Guy. Finally someone who agrees that X-men was a garabage movie. I understand they did not have a big budget like spidey but it was the script, directing and casting that made X-men suck. I loved spiderman. I might be bias been a fan since 5 but it was a great film. Directing tight, acting tight, story stuck to the origin with updates ( comic story Uncle ben surprises a burglar in movie its a car jacker) Special effects tight. What more can be said. Excellent movie go check it out. The next X-man movie better have better casting and script. Special effects are nice but don't make a movie ask George Lucas or the Mummy guy or Tomb raider people.

-INSERT RANT-

If the Matrix hadn't came out back in '99, what would action movies have to turn to today? I'm sick and tired of seeing that 'bullet time' shot in every action film/tv show/video game.

1. villan shoots projectile
2. slow motion occurs
3. our hero is able to almost stop time to avoid them

I understand the Wachowski brothers broke new ground with those scenes, but now everybody is using it (shit, even video games MAX PAYNE). DIRECTORS...why not take that 'Matrix' influence, and make it better. Show me something different. Otherwise, to me, you're no different than Ashanti.

-RANT OVER-

I mean...at all. Why didn't I like it? Honestly, I chalk that up to me just getting older, and just not appreciating ACTION ENTERTAINING movies anymore. The webslinging scenes were tight, but it was more like watching a cartoon than a live-action movie. It was just TOO fluid.

Overall, I think it's gonna be hard for me to give this movie (and sequels) a chance for the simple fact that I'm gonna compare it to Tim Burton's Batman everytime. Unfair I know, but I don't care. Comic fans...enjoy.

that when you saw Batman, you were at an age where you liked Action Entertainment movies, especially ones with more than a touch of darkness? I was just entertained by this all the way through, and compared to the previews for other movies (like the men in black sequel) that are gonna be the big releases this summer, I was just even more grateful. I'm glad someone finally gave Sam Raimi a real budget.

Funny, I didn't REALLY appreciate Tim Burton's 'Batman' till' I got older, but I still loved it as a kid. I think Spiderman could have used MORE darkness. But who am I? I have NEVER read any of the comic books or followed Spider man closely, so it just might be that I don't like Spider man. Maybe I'm just MORE of a fan of Batman. If this was close to the comic book character, then fine. I applaud them for doing so because it seems most/some of the comic book fans enjoyed the film. Me? I was just slightly entertained.

You're right. Damn near every action-oriented movie since 'The Matrix' has used that slow motion stop motion effect.

Although I think it was used in proper context with Spider-Man's spider-sense, it's kinda more than cliché now.

In response to Reply # 36

but in this one it made sense to use bullettime, and it didnt use it as a crutch, it just used it as a film technique like a pan or a steady-cam, it wasnt really flaunting at all and i never really noticed it. And i find i dont enjoy BAD action films that are just explosions and transparent characters, Spider-man made me feel like a kid again, it was great. Oh and the Batman movies are hot-garbage, and spider-man has always been really colorful and not dark at all, i think the film captured it perfectly.

Burton started a trend that Silver took and ran with, i.e. multiple bad guys. The numerous major villains in each movie took away from the one villain and really developing him/her as a character. The last Batman was just ridiculous with 3 MAJOR villains (Mr. Freeze, Bane, Poison Ivy). The way they did Bane as a no-brained lacky was just sad. Only the first Batman had some depth but the rest were just mindless explosions/fighting.

Fincher would be cool but Proyas has experience at it. He directed the Crow and the beautiful Dark City (the Matrix before there was a Matrix). I imagine his Gotham would be dead-on.

i think aronofsky will do a good jobon the new one though, the city will probably be exactly like a modern one which are dark and depressing enough and the character a little more edgy. But Proyas would have it dead on.

Fuck the Wachowskis. Norigton did that bullet time shit in Blade way before the Matrix came out. Not to mention it had been done in a Vanhalen video and Gap commercials before that. Those clowns get way to much credit for shit that had already been seen in other movies and media. I know a little about the comic book story of Spider-Man, but not much more than that. Looking at the movie strictly as a 2-hour piece of cinema, I thought it was good.

TV's Vern Shillinger was great as J.Jonah.

The non-moving mouth Green Goblin mask was very cheesy, though. What was the reasoning behind that? It practically ruined the scene where he brought Peter to the rooftop and had a talk with him.

The CGI webslinging scenes were good, although I thought they moved a little too fast at times to be realistic. But then again, they were trying to simulate super-human strength and speed.

I liked it.

they attempted to make a mask like the one found in the comics, but it was too hard for them, and they also thought that a company wouldnt make military hardware with a flexible goblin head, but i always liked his face and the expresions it had in the comics, but hey harry becomes the green goblin to take revenge on spider-man, maybe they can have the mask for him, or for when norman comes back.

'Spider-Man' Sets $114 Million Record at Box Office
Sun May 5, 1:15 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Spider-Man" a highly anticipated comic-book hero
saga, kicked off the lucrative summer movie season in North America with a
record three-day gross of $114 million, according to studio estimates issued
on Sunday.

The film, released by Columbia Pictures, smashed the old three-day record of
$90.3 million, set last November by "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

"Spider-Man" also broke the boy wizard's benchmarks for highest single-day
receipts, said Jeff Blake, Columbia's president of worldwide marketing and
distribution.

The film revolves around a high-school geek, played by Tobey Maguire, who
is bitten by a spider and is soon able to scale walls and shoot webs from his
wrist. Kirsten Dunst co-stars as his love interest, and Willem Dafoe as the
villainous Green Goblin. Sam Raimi directed the film, which was reportedly
budgeted between $120 million and $130 million.

The audience was evenly split between males and females, and between viewers aged over and under 25, Blake
said.

The "Spider-Man" gross of $43.7 million on Saturday broke the "Harry Potter" single day record of $33.5 million, and
the new film reached $100 million in three days, while "Harry Potter" took five days.

it is still amazing. but think about it. a 40 year old comic. this goes back so far. you got original fans, their kids, and grankids going now to see this movie.

Yes. This movie, without a doubt, has to be tied with first Superman as the best comic-book adaptation ever. It is a completely faithful update (not direct adaptation). I've never been a big Spiderman fan (huge Hulk fan...please Ang...please) but this movie was brilliant. Damn this film was incredible, especially for the genre.

This shit is so vastly superior to ANY of the Batman franchise (even the Burton ones). Dafoe is the Green Goblin, moreso than Nicholson was the Joker (who was just charicature of Nicholson himself). Magwire did a great job as Peter. I get the feeling he'll be more of the wisecracking smart-ass in the next ones (Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney aint even in the ballpark with Bats). Dunst as MJ/Gwen Stacy was an amalgam that didn't bother me in the least.

I was seriously hating the commercials and teaser trailers, but was overwhelmingly surprised. I'm a huge comic-nerd but I never expect a faithful comic to film translation. First its imposible, second they're two different media. I'm so pleased with this movie becasue it stayed as true to nature of characters as possible. They updated origins for the times but they were still those characters you read in the comics.I just hope the franchise maintains this level of quality as long as it last.

Excellent review and my thoughts exactly about batman. I liked the first batman film. Tim burton did a excellent job taking him in the right direction. He f'up with the second film He broke the golden rule about taking a film to far with the black and white. Terribly casting and costumes and it just sucked ass. I liked the action scenes in Batman forever(martial artist and big well made action movie fan) AFTer that the increase in opponents weakened the series. Did schumuker even read a couple of comics damn. Spidey blows away superman and batman. I am bias bigger marvel fan than DC but I am a batman fan.

harry's son normie then became the green goblin III after harry died. anyways, with the money the movie made, there will be two sequels at least (which all the actors are signed up for) wow, i'm glad they started putting the movies out on video sooner, 'cause i can't wait for the dvd (used to be you had to wait a year for the movie to be on video).

Definitely one of the better comic book adaptations ever done.
7 out of 10 for scripting, mostly due to a few cornball lines.
9 out of 10 for the casting, mostly due to Kirsten Dunst. ROWR!
8 out of 10 for the visuals, some minor flaws but mostly TIGHT.

I give it a solid 8 overall. Very good summer action flick.

In response to Reply # 0

This will be the beginning of the Marvel Comics floodgate opening into every f*cking summer.
Spider-Man was good. It stayed to the essence of the comic book by making Peter Parker and how being Spider-Man affect his life.

Kirsten Dunst is turing into a sexpot all of the sudden.

What I liked:
-Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man...I mean, as Peter Parker
-William Dafoe's mirror scences
-J.K. Simmons as J.J.Jameson. Perfect. This was the best casting since Patrick Stewart as Professor X
-The fact that him and Mary Jane DIDN'T get together after the movie.
-The scenes of Parker practicing.
-The scene with Green Goblin and Spider-Man immobilized...tres comic booky
-The fact that Spider-Man's costume got all fucked up in the end and they did the half mask/half face thing that happnes all the time.
-The bomb going off in Spider-Man's face in slo-mo
-The fight between Peter and Flash Thompson.
-The reference to Eddie Brock (aka Venom) and Dr. Connors (aka the Lizard)

What I didn't like:
-The Green Goblin mask-I wish they did something where his mouth would move
-THE FACT THAT THEY KILLED THE GREEN GOBLIN (maybe). I'm tired of comic book movies killing main villans. Now the Gwen Stacy story, which I was praying would be the sequel is a no go (unless Harry Osborn carries out the deed).
-Not enough Daily Bugle scenes
-James Franco's line readings...looking like James Dean doesn't get you a free pass.
-The fact that non one could figure out the Green Goblin was Osborn even though all the stuff was from his company
-The fact that they didn't so how Parker made his suit
-Some of the action sequences were too fast
-That Flash was a moron and could not be perceived as "attractive" as he is in the comic book.

What was hilarious:
-That whimper Maguire let out during the last fight with the Green goblin. Me and my friends almost pissed ourselves
-Bruce Campbell cameo.

So this always happens when I go to watch a movie based on a comic book, I always get really intrested in the comic and feel I am to late to jumb on the bus.

Good movie, I didn't go in expecting a dramatic tour de force just a good time... Sam Raimi is the man and can direct a plastic bag and make it intresting (wait a minute...)

I enjoyed Spiderman. It was a fun action romp. I admit, I am biased as a long time comic fan.

Many of us have a double standard. IMO, there has not been a flawless comic book adaptation by any stretch. Even the first Superman and Batman has some flaws that i have problems with and I consider those to be the best adaptations thus far. But there are a lot of things to take into consideration: studio idiots and the "too many cooks in the kitchen" syndrome, making something appeal to a larger audience (lowest common denominator variables), and the translation from one medium to the next (and all the variables that go with that).

But by this comics-turned-into-movies double standard, Spider-man a decent one. I am a film maker as well, so i understand where some of y'all are coming from, hating this movie. But I have chosen to uphold this double standard and stand by it. I can go into an Adam Sandler or a Blockbuster Blow-em-up flick and enjoy it. I do not expect Citizen Cane or The Godfather everytime I walk into a theater. If you do, you'll just end up hating 98% of the ish that comes out.

So as a comic fan, an action movie fan and a lover of the whole moviegoing experience, i have to say that Spider-man is up there.

IMO, if you liked x-men, then i think you'll really enjoy spider-man. If you found yourself nitpicking over inaccuracies or the cheese factor of x-men or even blade, then you'll end up hating spider-man. But that's just how i see it.

That said, my problems with the film are as follows:
1) I thought the film was a little too glossed over. I do understand however that Spider-man is NOT batman. Peter Parker is NOT the Dark Knight. Some people wanted a darker film. Well, Spider-man isn't really a dark comic. Not all comics are dark. However I think they could have toned down the cartooniness a bit.
2)I hated the Green Globlin armor. They tried way too hard to make him look "cool."
3) Could have been a little smoother in pacing. But this is me nitpicking
4) The "United We Stand" New-Yorker bit was a little over the top. But again, I found a way to look past it.

But let me stress, I enjoyed this movie despite these shortcomings. Now, what I really loved about this movie:

1) the performances by Tobey, and the actors playing his aunt, uncle, JJ, and even Willem did a pretty good job. But mostly Tobey. I thought he was dead on. Couldn't have asked for a better Parker.

2) The very Un-Hollywood, True-to-the-Comic way Peter handled the Mary Jane relationship at the end. Bravo. I think this is the first comic adaptation to avoid the cliche.

3) the web-slinging/swinging.. I thought they really captured the comic book with they way they interpreted his swinging. Looked really kick ass. Made me wanna swing from vines or something.

In conclusion:
Is it a deep movie? No. Could it have been done better? yes. Could it have been done worse? hell yes. Is it fun? absolutely! Definitely worth seeing for some action-packed, web-slinging, brainless FUN!!!

76. "BATMAN YEAR ONE"
In response to Reply # 75

I forgot, in my long-winded rant, to mention that I didn't see anyone speak of the most promising of the upcoming comic adaptations: BATMAN YEAR ONE!!!

I hear the HULK, DAREDEVIL and some others, but BYO sounds like it might be the best to come. Based on Frank Miller's Comic by the same name, Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream and Pi) is slated to direct what could be the milestone film that resurrects the franchise. After Schumacher beat it to death with that last horrible installment, this idea sounds like it could work. Aparently Miller will be involved in the adaptation as well.

Sounds like a winner to me!!! You want dark? This should be as dark as they come!

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like it'll come out till 2004. Ugh.

Earlier in the thread I posted about how Fincher would make a excellent director for Batman. Aronofsky, is another interesting choice, and he will take the char down a VERY VERY dark path. Which is another question, summer blockbuster(which apparently EVERY comic adaptation attempts to be..well save the first blade) for the most part=no less then a pg-13. Which I think will be a bit hard for Aronofsky to pull off with Frank Miller material as a bas

...Batman: Year One wasn't a particularly dark comic. Human, funny at times, definitely gritty, but I think the problem they would have (assuming they follow the storyline) is putting in enough action.

There aren't a lot of huge special effects/gadgets/explosions. I suppose the arrival of all the bats could be cool on screen.

I thought it was awesome. I can't decide if it's my favorite comic book movie until i see it 6 more times like X-Men. I never thought about it during the movie, but your complaint is correct...and very funn . Oh yeah, it's "Spider-man" according to Jason Fox (I saw that Foxtrot comic in the comic boko store on free comic book day saturday).

cheesy at parts sure...but true to the form of tha comic with only a few changes in characters and pacing...as a fan you can't argue with that...

...better than X-Men, but not as interesting as blade....and NOWHERE close to the greatnes of batman....it kinda reminded me of the first Supes movie....cause half the fun of the movie is retellin his origin....

yes, they had room for improvement...for instance, i didn't like how they shoved everything together, so many events happened in those two hours...but they still did a good job...

...yes, the goblin mask needed work, but when dafoe was hearin those voices, and later talkin to himself...that was dope....

once again, good movie...don't hate...
