Lessee....I scrolled through the list (and I looked at laserdiscs for myself.....ebay....hehehe):

Time Bandits -not really obscure, but a good film nonetheless.

Brazil - definitely classic must-have (gee, I'm 2 for 2 on the terry gilliam films...haha)

Yojimbo - a fine Kurosawa film (hell, any of his films are worth having)

The Vanishing - this french version is MUCH better (it's the original) than the bastardized US clone film starring keifer sutherland and jeff bridges

I know I didn't throw out too many foreign films, but I haven't bolstered that part of my collection yet.

no, i just don't have a life.

i can afford cheap items like dvds. that and they weren't bought all at once. they were bought over a nearly 5 year period. so my dvd addiction ($4671) at nearly 5 years (1700 days) has cost me less than $3 per day...

it was already discounted to $19.99
then, i used a birthday promotion, and combined it with several other promotions (coupons, gift certificates) to get the price of that and the other title in the order to $0.

needless to say, the more you spend, the more you save.

the current coupons are for only $5 off $35 (the $35 includes tax/shipping)

(Expires 7/31/02)
(Use MAPMCEXCLUS2 - promotional coupon)

i am really curious as to why THE ROCK is included in this collection. i thought it was panned when it came out. and i know the criterion people are movie snobs, so it'll be interesting to see the deal.

alot of the other films are older classics that i will have to take out the wrapper. but i fully suggest for any dvd addict and/or recent film school dropouts to invest in each film. they give you so much more in quality and in content, and in commentary.

matter of fact (we are traveling to colorado in a bit, imma watch the rock and brazil (finally! 3 discs!) and let you know the deal)

not cheap.

>the winners

>-do the right thing
>-rushmore

agreed on these 2.

>-traffic

got this a couple of days ago... haven't watched yet... i am so happy they did this though... i love soderbergh's commentaries... peep the commentary track for 'the limey' -- one of the best commentary tracks out there (non-criterion btw)

>-the harder they fall

don't have... do you mean ""?

>-diobolique (orignal)

agreed great movie...

>-beastie boys collection (fucking amazing shit...i hope my
>career can reach this level.)

don't have this one yet either. but it's how ALL music dvds/video collections should be done. (basing this on what i've . here's to hoping more artists release collections like this... hint hint

>-chasing amy

agreed. 's dvds are some of the best out there. (for those of us that live for extras) did you have the criterion laserdisc for this too? i loved how he started off the laserdisc commentary by saying FUCK YOU to dvds

>-the last temptation of christ (marty's only director's
>commentary)

still don't have (don't know why i don't.) should buy it though before the rights run out on it...

>-george washington (please cop this one!)

have never heard of it, but it's now on .

>i grabbed about 10 more outta my crib when i was doing last
>minute packing.

>i am really curious as to why THE ROCK is included in this collection. i thought it was panned when it came out. and i
>know the criterion people are movie snobs, so it'll be interesting to see the deal.

"" is on the list because they like working with michael bay... it was previously released as a laserdisc boxset on criterion. i think criterion titles like "" (one of the first 2-DVD sets) & "the rock" help make it so they can redo other films that aren't as "popular"...

>alot of the other films are older classics that i will have to take out the wrapper. but i fully suggest for any dvd
>addict and/or recent film school dropouts to invest in each film. they give you so much more in quality and in content,
>and in commentary.

amen.

>matter of fact (we are traveling to colorado in a bit, imma
>watch the rock and brazil (finally! 3 discs!) and let you
>know the deal)

i enjoyed "," but i hope they go back and remaster it (and the earlier widescreen dvds by criterion) for 16x9 televisions... just after brazil & armageddon came out, they begin doing 16x9...

>pass the popcorn

the closest studio that comes to criterion in caring about how their films are, are new line cinema. i mean, just look at some of their dvds. the films may not be the best, but there are so many extras that you don't have time to watch them all (rush hour 1 & 2, se7en, boogie nights (previously available on criterion on laserdisc, they use many of the same features on the dvd set -- because the rights were owned by paul thomas anderson -- not by the studio, or criterion -- rare these days). i was giddy when i saw that new line was doing the 'lord of the rings' trilogy. the upcoming 4-dvd set for the expanded version of the first epic is coming out this november

fox sure has turned it's act around too (thank god). many of the older fox titles were garbage. $34.99 for every bareboned title, no 16x9... now you get releases like 'the fight club,' 'the phantom menace', the 'alien legacy'...

same goes for buena vista. early in the dvd picture, their titles were all $34.99, minimal features, and no 16x9... now you have titles 'amelie' & the recent 4-dvd set of 'pearl harbor' (which included an extended director's cut which showed what he wanted folks to see in the battle scene -- very gruesome -- think 'saving private ryan'...) haven't listened to the commentary track for the 4-dvd set of 'pearl harbor' but i look forward to it. michael bay usually talks about whatever he feels like... i'm sure he's going to address how it was seen as a failure because of the love story... there was some extremely bad acting/writing, but the war stuff is incredible...

..it also begs the question as to why Armageddon is in there as well (at least on laser, it is), cuz that film is not on the A list either.

I'm assuming you're saying you own all of them that are on the DVD list (well....duh). I have about half of them that are on the laserdisc list.....which is quite considerable.

Aaahh....laserdiscs.....my digital version of vinyl.

like "the rock", "armageddon" is also a michael bay film. i think that it's just as interesting how these movie companies throw (hundreds of) millions of dollars at a movie...

the bruce willis portion of the commentary for armageddon was one of the worst ever. BORING... heh. (and i really like bruce.)

>I'm assuming you're saying you own all of them that are on the DVD list (well....duh). I have about half of them that

(assuming you're addressing my post) no, i don't even own 1/5 of the titles. in fact, i only have 29 out of approximately 160 titles

(also have on criterion laserdisc)

(also have on criterion laserdisc)

(thanks ray)

(also have on criterion laserdisc)

(And as soon as it's available for pre-order at Amazon. Due on 9/24, this two-disc set features a brand-new 1.33:1 digital transfer, the original English mono track, an audio commentary with Hitchcock scholar Marian Keane, the complete 1948 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation, an illustrated essay on the Salvador Dali dream sequence, additional essays by noted Hitchcock scholars, Excerpts from a 1973 interview with composer Miklos Roza, an extensive still gallery, and the trailer. Retail is $39.95.)

and only 12 of the laserdisc sets:

boys in the hood
damage (the current is just fine)
do the right thing (also have on criterion dvd)
the game (had on bareboned dvd, until i bought the criterion ld set -- can't wait for se dvd.)
the graduate (the dvd special edition sucks when compared to the criterion ld version)
(have the special edition dvd on pre-order)
rebecca (also have on criterion dvd)
the rock
se7en (also have on )
short cuts (i think new line owns this, not sure why it's not available yet on dvd.)
she's gotta have it (c'mon spike... release it.)
trainspotting (waiting for a special edition release on dvd... although there's one - not 16x9 - available in canada.)

(if all of them except 'boys n the hood', 'damage' & 'the rock' come out on criterion, i'll buy them as well.)

>Aaahh....laserdiscs.....my digital version of vinyl.

and impossible to get rid of hehe. (which for now i'm okay with.) my pioneer ld/dvd combo player is gathering much dust...

i rarely go to movies anymore (my home setup makes me not want to go anymore unless it's at the or pacific place.)

re: Boyz N The Hood... probably rights issues. it's possible that the se stuff that was done on the criterion ld is owned by criterion.

there's also supposed to be a criterion dvd of coppola's dracula, transpotting, the game... but all are currently on hold due to rights...

what's nice about criterion, is that if you have a question about a title, or one that's upcoming, or would like to suggest one, send an email to jon mulvaney... he actually replies (assuming you're not an idiot and ask when a remastered "good burger" is going to be produced by criterion... hehe...

maybe thats why, but it seems odd that criterion would hold back their laserdisc supplements when they rely on other studios for the films they release.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is presented in the director’s preferred aspect ratio of 1.66:1. This new digital transfer was created on a high-definition Spirit Datacine from a new 35mm interpostive made from the original negative. The sound was created from a new discrete 5.1 mix made from the original stems. The transfer and new sound mix were supervised and approved by director Peter Weir. Telecine colorist: Gregg Garvin/Modern Videofilm, L.A. Telecine supervisor: Maria Palazzola...

one of their earlier releases, it was not remastered for 16x9 televisions either... hopefully they'll go back and give this otherwise gorgeous film that treatment... as well as a peter weir commentary (he didn't give one to witness or mosquito coast either... sigh)

they made the rock and armaggedon partly as a nice cash grab, the rock is a pretty good action flick and has a pretty big following.
George Washington is DEFINATELY a must see film.
Criterion is the shit because you can buy any of their films without knowing anything about it and be virtually certain its worth owning. No complaints as long as they keep on putting out all of Kurosawas films, those are required veiwing for anyone who wants to act like they know anything about film.

LIAR! do you own the royal tenenbaums? it's new, and i bet you haven't copped it yet! it's the hotness.

Robocop is also included, and I don't think that's an amazing film. it seems like the criterion folks also like to throw in some campy cult classics from time to time, hence robocop and the rock.

the Criterion people also try to choose some contemporary flicks that, while not univerally lauded as great cinema, have an interesting angle to them, thus Robocop (Robocop is a Criterion Selection, right?). not sure how the Rock qualifies for that, though.

i'm hating, though, because i really want all of the out-of-print French New Wave stuff on Criterion.

then seven samurai or rashomon, the hidden fortress is probably the least essential even though its also great. Criterion needs to release Drunken Angel, Throne of Blood, Stray Dog and Ikiru, im surprised their releasing redbeard before those, still getting it though.

went down to Hollywood Video and rented the criterion dvd. actually its pretty cool cuz Hollywood has a "classics" section now and they rent lots of the criterion disks although i'm sure i'll pick up many of the disks eventually. so far i only have rushmore, tenenbaums, and the rock.

...

Just in from Criterion are their latest October releases, led by a new 2-disc special edition of acclaimed indie director Jim Jarmusch's "Down by Law." Featuring a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, extras include interviews, press conference footage, 2 music videos, 3 still galleries, trailers, and more.

Also arriving on 10/22 is director Michael Powell's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp," presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and English mono, along with an audio commentary with Powell and Martin Scorsese, a making-of featurette, still galleries, and the trailer. Retail is $39.95 each.

Finally, also hitting shelves on 10/8 is a new "Akira Kurosawa 4-pack," featuring the classics Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. This collection includes the same discs currently available, with a retail price of $99.95.
