"Movies: What Might've Been"

-Eric Stoltz was shot half of Back to the Future as Marty McFly.
-Bad Boys (1995) was originally conceived as a vehicle for Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz rather than Martin and Will.
-Puffy was approached about playing WIlly Beamen in "Any Given Sunday" AND Chris Rock's role in Lethal weapon 4.
-Kool G Rap turned down the beat for Black Rob's "Whoah" (I know that's not movie related but it still angers me greatly.
-Lucas and Spielberg wanted Tom Selleck for Indiana Jones
-Chappelle Turned down the role of Bubba in Forrest Gump

What other near misses were out there in movie land, and how would the films have been different if things had gone according to (someone's) plan?

Add to the list

Stuart Townsend. was originally cast as Aragorn, but was replaced by Viggo Mortensen after four days of shooting due to creative differences.

Although David Bowie was said to be keen on playing Elf Lord Elrond, the part went instead to Hugo Weaving.

Daniel Day-Lewis turned down the role of Aragorn.

Orlando Bloom originally auditioned for the part of Faramir. He was called back and subsequently cast, instead, as Legolas.

Uma Thurman originally turned down the role of Mia Wallace. Quentin Tarantino was so desperate to have her as Mia, he ended up reading her the script over the phone, finally convincing her to take on the role.

Pam Grier auditioned for the role of Lance's wife Jody. Though she had a great audition, Quentin Tarantino decided not to cast her because he could not imagine Pam Grier getting pushed around the way the character does.

The role of Vincent Vega was written for 'Michael Madsen' , who played the characters brother, Vic Vega, in Reservoir Dogs, but he couldn't do the film due to scheduling conflicts for another film.

Sylvester Stallone was briefly considered for the role of Butch.

Tarantino originally wrote the role of Jules specifically for Samuel L. Jackson, however it was almost given to Paul Calderon after a great audition. When Jackson heard this, he flew to LA and re-auditioned, getting back the part he was supposed to play. Calderon ended up with a cameo as Paul, the bartender.

Samuel L. Jackson auditioned for the part of Mr. Orange in Reservoir Dogs (1992), but it went to Tim Roth. Tarantino enjoyed Jackson's work so much that he wrote the part of Jules specifically for him.

Before Willem Dafoe received the role of the Green Goblin, both Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich were offered the role. Malkovich and Dafoe starred together in Shadow of the Vampire (2000), which was produced by Nicolas Cage.

James Franco auditioned to play Peter Parker, but was cast as Harry Osborn instead.

In addition to both Peter Parker and Norman Osborn wear their enemy's costume colors during the Thanksgiving dinner scene, Harry Osborn is seen wearing all of the colors. He's wearing a green shirt, red tie and blue coat.

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Leonardo DiCaprio were both considered for the role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Sam Raimi was not Sony's first choice as director. Others considered were Jan de Bont, James Cameron Ang Lee and David Fincher.

Alicia Witt was considered for the role of Mary-Jane Watson.

Elisha Cuthbert auditioned for the role of Mary-Jane Watson.

'McQueen, Steve' was the first to turn down the role of Captain Willard.

Harvey Keitel was then cast as Willard. Two weeks into shooting, director Francis Ford Coppola replaced him with Martin Sheen.

Marlon Brando was paid $1 million in advance. He threatened to quit and keep the advance. Coppola told his agent that he didn't care, and if they couldn't get Brando, they would try Jack Nicholson, 'Redford, Robert' , and then Al Pacino. Brando eventually turned up late, drunk, 40kg overweight, and admitted he hadn't read the script or even "Heart of Darkness", the book it was based on. He read Coppola's script, and refused to do it. After days of arguments over single lines of dialogue, an ad-lib style script was agreed upon, and this was shot according to Brando's stipulations that he appears in shadows.

James Caan was the director's first choice to play Col. Lucas. Caan, however, wanted too much money for what was considered a minor part in the movie. Harrison Ford was eventually cast in the role.

Bill Murray and Terry Gilliam I think would have done something much closer to the book than the sugary sweet (though enjoyable) film that came out of a dark book, where Forrest is quite bitter.

Ha, the ego trip Big Book of Racism clouded your memory? One of the blurbs in the book claimed Spike Lee beefed with Wil Smith over his role in Bagger Vance due to Spike's belief Wil did push hard enough for Spike to direct Ali.

The fact the Wachowski's originally wanted a black lead casts the movie in an interesting light. I assume Trinity would have been black also to match the black leading man. Would Morpheus have been white to create a balance?

Will Smith was approached to play Neo but turned it down in order make Wild Wild West (1999).

Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the role of Neo.

Axel Foley was originally going to be played by Sylvester Stallone or Mickey Rourke. Stallone left the project and used some of his script ideas to make Cobra (1986).

1.

Luchino Visconti convinced both Marlon Brando and Ingrid Bergman to play the lead roles in his film Senso. A producer forced him to hire Farley Granger and Alida Valli instead.

(It's still a really great movie though).

2.

Orson Welles came up with the idea for "Monsieur Verdoux" and wanted to direct it with Charlie Chaplin in the lead role.

Chaplin said no, not wanting to be directed by another director besides himself.

Welles sold him the idea because he still thought Chaplin was right for the part.

Chaplin directed the film himself.

It's one of my favorite movies as it is. . . but just think what it would've been like for Chaplin and Welles to make a film together and especially at that point in their careers.

3.

Claudette Colbert was originally going to play Margo Channing in All About Eve, not Bette Davis.

I've heard this before, but it remains tantalizing. I imagine Chaplin may not have responded well to the direction of others, though.

Also could have been nice if Chaplin worked it out for Welles to work for United Artists in general. I'm not sure how much control Chaplin had over the studio at this point, though.

apparently there was a huge disagreement over who would receive top billing.

The final plan was to have both names above the title on each side with Newman's name slightly higher, and McQueen's slightly larger. Newman agreed but McQueen didn't and backed out.

Another story is that Newman had some say and had McQueen removed in favor of Marlon Brando (Brando turned it down)

also Newman originally supposed to play Sundance.

Leone turned down The Godfather because he already had plans of his own gangster film, "OUATIA" Tho, it has worked out for the best, I wonder what Leone's interpretation would've been.

I also read that Quinn (at that time the frontrunner for Vito) had dinner w/ Brando and told him his idea of the bulldog look for Vito...dunno how true this is, esp. since Quinn & Brando didn't like eachother for a while...dunno if the hatchet was buried in 1970-71.

Sincerely,
Derek Fisher

Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman were all offered the part of Michael Corleone, but all refused. 'Redford, Robert' and Ryan O'Neal were also considered.

Robert De Niro read for the parts of both Sonny and Michael Corleone. Coppola decided that he wasn't right for the role of Sonny, and already had Pacino in mind for Michael.

Martin Sheen auditioned for the role of Michael Corleone.

Before being cast as Michael, Al Pacino was committed to starring in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). Coppola pulled some strings and managed to get Pacino released. Pacino was replaced on Bang the Drum Slowly by Robert De Niro, who had to give up the small role he'd had in The Godfather: that of Paulie ("won't see him no more") Gatto. This, in turn, cleared the way for De Niro to star as a young Vito in the sequel.

There is a rumor that 'Reynolds, Burt' was originally cast as Michael Corleone but, Marlon Brando wouldn't act with him, considering him more a TV star.

Laurence Olivier and Edward G. Robinson were considered for the role of Vito Corleone.

Copppola wanted to cast actor Timothy Carey but Carey turned the part down so he could film a television pilot.

Among those who tested for the role of Johnny Fontane were Frankie Avalon and Vic Damone, both established singer/actors with movie experience.

'Leone, Sergio' was offered the job of direction, but refused, wanting to make his own gangster film, which eventually became Once Upon a Time in America (1984). Leone later regretted the decision.

Carmine Caridi was Francis Coppola's first choice for the role of Sonny. Robert Evans insisted he cast James Caan instead, because Al Pacino (who was relatively unknown) had been cast as Michael. Evans wanted at least one "name" actor to play one of the brothers. Caridi was later given a small part in Godfather: Part II, The (1974)

Robert Evans cleared him up. Coppola had nothing to do with it. Evans called his good buddy Sidney Korshak, and he took care of it. Also, it wasn't Bang the Drum Slowly, it was The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight. Not sure where you got your info from, but it ain't right. Thought I'd clear this up.

The studio originally wanted Patricia Arquette to play Amber Waves

Leonardo DiCaprio was originally offered the role of Dirk Diggler, but turned it down to do Titanic.

Gwyneth Paltrow was originally offered the role of Rollergirl but turned it down.

Warren Beatty was originally offered the role of Jack Horner

Samuel L. Jackson was offered the role of Buck Swope..

According to William H. Macy, his agent discouraged him from reading the script, but Macy did so, loved it, and signed to do the film.

George Lucas and Brian De Palma held a joint audition for Carrie (1976) and Star Wars (1977). Originally, Sissy Spacek was cast as Princess Leia, and Carrie Fisher as Carrie. However, Carrie Fisher refused to appear in nude scenes, but Spacek was willing to do them. So, they switched parts.

Jodie Foster was George Lucas's second option for Princess Leia.

'Russell, Kurt' , Nick Nolte, and Christopher Walken were all candidates for the role of Han Solo as George Lucas wanted to stay away from any actors he had previously used in his films. Harrison Ford (who had played Bob Falfa in Lucas'sAmerican Graffiti (1973)) read the part of Hans Solo for screen tests of other characters but wasn't originally considered for the part. During these tests Lucas realized Harrison Ford was perfect for the role.

It is rumored that George Lucas wanted Orson Welles to do Darth Vader's voice.

Before casting Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucas considered casting Japanese actor Toshirô Mifune.

Peter Mayhew, who portrayed Chewbacca, was given the option of playing either Chewbacca or Darth Vader - he opted to be the Wookiee because he wanted to play a 'good guy'.

Terri Nunn of the band Berlin was in the running for the role of Princess Leia and had readings with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.
