"The Hunger Games (Ross, 2012)"
Fri Mar-23-12 05:33 AM by ZooTown74

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/jennifer-lawrence-gets-lead-role-hunger-games-25482

They just cast their protagonist, Jennifer Lawrence, any thoughts? Anyone read the book(s)? I had a feeling they wouldn't cast a teenager like Hailee Steinfield in that role. I haven't watch Winter's Bone but I heard she's great in it. I'm still interested. I'm not expecting much though.

The actual Hunger Games is going to be epic I feel, but if I was someone who hadn't already read the books, this trailer wouldn't interest me until maybe the last 1/3 of it.

I imagine they'll release another trailer that more explicitly lays out the concept

Movie looks dark and dope though

Good to see that they didn't glam Lenny up, which was a fear of mine

The whole concept is fucking sweet, I wish they addressed what Panam is and why they have the Hunger Games in the trailer, would have been an easily way to immediately hook the audience in.

The Hunger Games takes place in an unidentified future time period after the destruction of North America, in a nation known as Panem. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly Appalachia.

As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol, every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by lottery and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event in which the participants, or "tributes," must fight to the death in a dangerous, outdoor arena, controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains.

"In the film, the world of 2018 is a global corporate state, containing entities such as the Energy Corporation, a global energy monopoly based in Houston which deals with nominally-peer corporations controlling access to all transport, luxury, housing, communication, and food on a global basis. The film's title is the name of a violent, globally popular sport around which the events of the film take place."

and it kinda goes right back to gladiators in the arena

so the concept's pretty old, i guess

Katniss (sp?), I was hype...

i will check this out but I will make sure to get the books beforehand...

between this *AND* Rooney Mara shaping up to be a MORE than capable american version of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake (AND, they're not *EVEN* skimping on the graphic sex and violence in the books either...)

man, late quarter 2011 going into spring quarter 2012 is looking *RIGHT* for real for the movies...*AND* leading ladies in films.

Then I saw Winter's Bone and I was sold. She basically held that movie down by herself. There were some good periphery characters, but she held that down.

- Man listen from everything that i've read and seen about Rooney Mara and the Girl movie it looks like she's really gonna kill this Lisbeth Salander role. Noomi Rapace was the only good parts of the original so Rooney has big shoes to fill, but it looks like with the direction and her acting they've more than nailed it.

My in-laws will be in town that weekend so i'll be getting them to watch the kid so we can go see that one.

YUP...there were other people in it, but Jennifer *SOLD* that movie. And only SHE could have done it or given that character justice.

YUP. expect Mara to STRAIGHT snatch up one of the Best Actress slots for this year's oscars and expect Streep, Mara *AND* Glenn Close (for Glenn Hobbs, where she plays a man) to GO AT IT in the oscar race...with Viola Davis (The Help), Adepero Oduye
(PARIAH), Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin), Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet (CARNAGE) and possibly Charlize Theron (Young Adult) all battling for spots...man, its some damn good movies with lead actresses in the roles...it really is.

hmm...I *MIGHT* have the script to this somewhere too, I think.

But the oscars for women this year? And Michelle Williams is in the race with her Marilyn biopic? oh shit...

That shit should've been something different entirely, but ti was bad.

Now we get to see what she can do after her Tara trip. Which i would've REALLY liked to have seen get another 2 or 3 episodes. Yea it got an end, but it was just like a hastily placed bow on a holidy 5-pack ya dig.

If she can create stuff like Tara then i believe Young Adult can really do work.

Besides having a poor ending I thought this shit was off the hook. Pretty much Battle Royale + Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome = The Hunger Games. I'm four chapters into the 2nd...so far so good...

As for the movie, I watched the trailers and yeah this seems like a faithful adaptation. My problem is the soundtrack. A country soundtrack? Come. the. fuck. on.

So that's pretty true to where they would've come from.

Don't pass judgement on the 1st book until you read the other 3. Stand alone the books are ok, but all 3 together tell a much better story.

Not bad, even though I'm not a teen and probably not the target audience. I could nitpick the book if I wanted to, but that wouldn't really be fair. I suppose I'll finish up the trilogy Kindle style. It will be interesting to see how most of this translates to the screen.

*mild spoilerish, I suppose*

Act I works better in print than screen I'd imagine. There's got to be a good bit of time spent in D-12 to establish anything believable between Kat, Gil and Peeta, and how to touch on the rebellion that brought he games about in the first place will be interesting to see. Of course, once the reaping begins everything starts poppin

is that I was able to keep track of every kid. I thought at first I would need to keep a cheat sheet, but I didn't. And every character had a personality. It was a real tour de force for the genre.

as Katniss ultimately has to choose between Gale and Peeta

The good thing about the books, though, is that there was enough action and killing and death to keep dudez like me interested and not bogged down in that "one's my hunting buddy and I love him but I also love this other guy who I was paired with and I didn't like at first but now he's cool OMG OMG OMG" bullshit

Sadly I think we'll be seeing a lot of the latter, since that's the target audience for this

But don't think I ain't gon peep these jawns, lol

For those of you who haven't read it I'll see you Wednesday after my press screening.

Now for the books *spoilers of course you dumbasses*

First of wow. What a shitty ending to an really great and engaging series. Loved the first book. I thought besides the ending, which just stopped, it was really good. The second was an excellent, natural continuation of the story with a great plot twist at the end. Book three took half of the book to really get started. Shit was anticlimatic as fuck, made the point of Katniss going into the games in the first place pointless, almost all of the characters pissed me off, and she ends up with the softest character ever Peeta. And the way Gale was written off at the end of the book was fucked up.

I'll be watching the first two with enthusiasm. When Mockingjay drops in its two parts I'll skip unless I get a press screening(s)

*yes, spoilers*

Just absolutely terrible for 3 major reasons:

1) I'm fine with killing off Finnick and Prim but at least address that shit with some depth. These are two of the key characters in the entire series and their deaths are just kinda glossed over and instead we have Katniss flailing around and giving up on life. I guess that's a problem with the series at large....none of the characters really address anything, it's all implied through their actions or reactions.....except for the final prologue......which bring me to.....

2) At least give some kind of explanation as to what happened to the government, structure, conditions, etc since so much of the series went into detailing how those things were unfair at the time. It just made the ending really disjointed to suddenly and completely disregard all that when it had been a major part of the books up to that point.

3) My biggest issue....Gale, Haymitch, and her mom are basically just written off. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? LIKE SERIOUSLY? Gale and mom got jobs in different districts, Haymitch is drunk again....life goes on, that's the bs we get for 3 of the main characters and relationships in the series?!! Not even a conversation between Katniss and Gale about how their ideals had grown apart or something to that nature (since it was clear Gale was drifting away as he embraced the revolution)....I mean cmon. This makes me legitimately angry lol.

I had to re-read the final chapter and prologue a couple times just to make sure that shit was real....that Collins had actually ended an otherwise terrific series with some ridiculous oversights. Just so disappointing, and like Zoo said, it only leads you to believe that it might be considerably beefed up in the film version.

It's long winded, and heavily critising the Hunger Games "world/state" and how it makes no sense.

Fine.

But what they say about the violence (or lack there of) worries me a litte:
http://www.salon.com/2012/03/20/the_hunger_games_a_lightweight_twi_pocalypse/

Almost no actual bloodshed is depicted (in deference to the required PG-13 rating), and during the fight sequences cinematographer Tom Stern relies on a wobbly, nonsensical, quick-cut style that leaves you utterly unsure about who has killed whom, and may have you squeezing your eyes shut to avoid throwing up. The problem really isn’t the lack of explicit violence; far more important, we get no sense of the hunger, thirst, cold, disease and harrowing physical torment undergone by Katniss and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), the shy, blond District 12 baker’s son who has long loved her from afar. OK, they get a few superficial nicks and scratches, but they look as well-fed and runway-ready in the second half of the movie as they did at the beginning.

And once again just in case, cause some of you have less than half a brain, *SPOILERS OF COURSE YOU DUMBASSES*

Now that that's out of the way, I way say that at almost 2 and a half hours this movie flies by.

A lot of the changes from the book I liked such as Katniss getting the Mockingjay pin from Greasy Sae in the Hob. Madge is not in the film. I like how we get to see the games outside of the arena, such as Haymitch getting sponsors for Katniss, Seneca Crane commanding the Gamemmakers from a giant white room as they watch and control the tributes. Seneca Crane has a lot of scenes with President Snow (Snow's roll is beefed up).

A few changes I didn't like was that Rue was pushed into the background, so when she dies it has less of an impact. When Katniss does the tribute salute in the air, everyone in District 11 salutes and then a riot breaks out. I really wished the would've saved this for the second film as this is not addressed again, and it had a bigger impact in book 2 than what had happen in the film. In book 2 it was so simple, and brutal and here they beefed it up to a huge scene.

END SPOILERS

As a movie it works best for people who've read the book, as I've had people who had questions ask me well how was this or what was this. And hearing Katniss' inner monologue in the book was good, as we get to hear her thoughts.

With that said, I feel Gary Ross made the best movie he could. He said he made an indie film that just happens to be a tentpole release. I beg to differ but whatever. The jump cuts were a bit much at times, but they work more than they don't. Jennifer Lawrence was great as Katniss and Liam Hemsworth did a good Gale. Josh Hutcherson was decent as Peeta. Lenny Kravitz killed it as Cinna even if his scenes felt rushed. Woody Harrelson as Haymitch was perfect, as was Elisabeth Banks as Effie.

I was surprised this was PG-13 cause this was really violent and bloody at times. And I'm glad Ross didn't hold back. It's not gratuitous, it's showed to be vicious and horrible.

I liked how the soundtrack was subtle and never overpowered the film and was only played when necessary. And only two songs are played in the film and it's over the end credits. More Hollywood films need to do this instead cramming songs on the soundtrack at random points in the film.

All in all this a matinee. Though a high matinee almost teetering on a full price.

And Jennifer Lawrence in real life...that's my ex-wife one day.

And I saw that Collins was part of the screenwriting team. This bitch still doesn't know how to write an ending. The ending in the book is way better than the ending in the film which was rushed.

Like, all black people got regulated into one district, which i believe district 11 is in the southeast or something like that.

But in the book they planned the shit out, I havent seen the movie but from what he was saying they just turned to savages, I don't know. I guess it can go either way, maybe they had to expedite their overtake of the district because of the movies but I don't know how I feel about that.

in the books, that whole riot doesn't even happen in the first part.

they showed it in the movie to have more action in the movie, so people would be excited for a second movie.

If the second movie ignores the plotting, then the point is more valid.

They were a district of people who reached their breaking point and decided to revolt. Not really sure where the whole "savage" thing came from. Savage usually implies they are doing something wrong. These people are the "good guys".

But I might be reading too much into it, as the black audience I saw the film with was sad when she died.

In response to Reply # 0

Sorry for not mentioning spoilers in my comment above. I thought that this being a story where a bunch of kids fight until there is one survivor that mentioning a side character's death wouldn't really rue-in anything. Either way, my bad.

I'll preface this by saying I read the book and would really love to hear someone who saw the movie without reading the book's responses to some of my comments.

* This movie was definitely made for people who read the book. There are absolutely no significant changes to the story, however there is a lot that is maybe implied or only briefly explained at a high level that a Hunger Games rookie may not catch or retain.

* You don't get a great sense of Katniss' lifestyle at home. Besides a "District Border, Don't Cross This Fence" sign you never get a full understanding that every day she is defying The Capitol.

* I hated the majority of the action sequences. The quick moving camera shots from one tribute to another and then random sounds of stabbing/killing, it was completely hard to follow.

* I wish they developed more of the other tributes during their time training in The Capitol. I mean, you get a sense of who Rue is, but there's another little boy who is dead within seconds of the Games starting and I really could have cared less. It felt like Katniss, Peeta, Cato and the other 2 tributes from 2 and 11 were the only ones you had any feelings towards.

* Outside of Katniss and Peeta, none of them ever seemed to show any kind of emotion whatsoever. Knowing that you have about a 96% chance of dying in the next few weeks, you figure most of the non-careers would be a fucking mess, especially during the ride to the actual games. I also don't believe they let Katniss let out anything other than confidence once she got to the game. I never felt concerned for her one bit (Maybe this is cause I read the book and know the outcome, though?)

* The characters don't change AT ALL. They spend weeks training and then more time in the actual Games and they seemingly go through the entire experience and come out the same physically (aside from a few scars) and emotionally.

* Why leave out any kind of explanation of the symbolism of the Mockingjay pin? This was essentially Katniss' big FUCK YOU to The Capitol and all we got out of it was "it's just a pin to keep you safe" and an awkward inquery from the President at the end of the movie.

* No need to even bring up the love triangle in this movie. Obviously they are trying to plant seeds for the future films, but showing Gayle upset watching Katniss peck some other boy's cheek brought nothing to the table.

* A few other random comments:
** The behind-the-scenes "production" of the Games was awesome
** Haymitch seemed way more collective/sober than in the book, maybe to make him more likeable. Cinna also wasn't
** The dogs at the end NOT being clones of the dead tributes was a let down. I was psyched to see how they'd pull that off
** The "girl on fire" shit kinda sucked
** Didn't Peeta get hurt by the dogs enough that he lost his leg in the book?
** Could have been a little more focus on the whole "don't just focus on learning how to kill people but surviving the elements" in training. Between the berries and Peeta living off of camo for a few days, that was a big aspect of surviving the Games.

In the end, I think seeing Battle Royale before really hindered my experience of the games. This will obviously be the movie EVERYONE makes comparisons to, and it's understandable. I'd say the battle in Battle Royale was better than the Games in HG, however this film has an actual backstory, character development and depth. That being said, I really wished this could have been an R movie just so the Games had a little more, I don't know, excitement or feel to them.

I'll give it a solid B. I had high expectations though. Also, I loved the score. Not sure why people thought Taylor Swift and Kid CuDi songs would actually find their way into the movie before credits.

his leg I mean...in the book he got shot in the leg by Cato. and it got terribly infected. did they show the part where he lays in the mud hiding?

Anyway I thought that it was that event that really caused him to lose his leg...it wasn't salvageable and wasn't healing at all even after they got the good medicine, he was still having trouble with it. Either way the dogs added to that situation but in my mind, and I just read the book, he was losing that leg regardless.

If you don't want to read the above article and get me paid every time you click, long story short: fast-paced probably to a fault, good acting, terrible cinematography for the most part, left me cold. Diverting without being memorable on the whole. Stanley Tucci steals the entire film.

his blue hair and the unnaturally white teeth in his smile--that's what stole the film.

His actual performance was nothing special.

In response to Reply # 0

http://blog.melanism.com/2012/03/23/movie-of-the-week-the-hunger-games/

The one question I kept asking myself after walking out of of the movie theater was, “Would I have enjoyed this film more if I hadn’t read the book?” As an adaptation, it was okay. It was like a Cliff Notes version of Suzanne Collins’ book. You got the basic idea but none of the nuance. The problem is the nuance is where a majority of the story lies.

Because the books are written from our heroine’s, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), perspective, we are privy to her inner dialogue. Without that option, the film, directed by Gary Ross, decided to expand the scope of the book by showing things Katniss was not privy to like the behind the scenes work of the games and their game master Seneca Crane (it’s good to see Wes Bentley working again). I did enjoy seeing the Hunger Games at work.

They kept all the major action setpieces but what was lost was character development and Katniss’ emotional complexity. Even though the movie was two hours and 22 minutes, I don’t feel like we got to know anyone particularly well, even Katniss. More importantly, the movie doesn’t really get into the motivations Katniss has for her moments with her fellow District 12 competitor Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). In the movie, you don’t get that she is conflicted about her potential feelings for Peeta and for Gale (Liam Hemsworth) back home. Also, the conclusion of the film moves along so briskly that you really don’t get the impact of what lies ahead for Katniss and all of Panem.

I don’t know if I would have enjoyed this movie more or less if I hadn’t read the books. On one hand, I think I would have had a lot more questions about why certain things happened if I hadn’t read the books. On the other hand, I would have probably had less complaints. One thing I did enjoy were the performances. Since her Academy Award nominated performance in Winter’s Bone, I have always hoped Jennifer Lawrence would become a star and it seems she is well on her way. You could tell she was trying to convey Katniss’ inner dialogue through her expressions and reactions. Elizabeth Banks is almost unrecognizable as Effie Trinket, the District 12 chaperone, and makes the most of her screen time. Woody Harrelson (Haymitch) and Lenny Kravitz (Cinna) were also great and I wish we had more time with their characters. Stanley Tucci as Hunger Games host Caesar Flickerman looked like he was having a ball. In the hands of a lesser actor, his role could have been completely ridiculous.

Usually, I don’t notice the camera work in a film but it stood out here, in a bad way. There were a lot of closeups and unnecessary quick cuts from camera to camera. It was very distracting and took awhile to adjust to. It was like it was being directed by the Hunger Games master himself.

In response to Reply # 0

I didn't read the books and I saw this last night. I thought it was an awful movie with almost zero character development and terrible dialogue. The action was nothing to get excited about.

I'm sure the characters are more interesting in the book, but I did not give a fuck about any of them in the movie.

*Spoiler*

The scene where Rue dies was laughable. Almost as bad as Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" in Revenge of the Sith. Awful.

*End Spoiler*

I think the main problem of the film is that the script is garbage. The fact that it was co-written by Suzanne Collins does not entice me into reading the novels.

I thought the movie would be great if they would have went with an R.

I found the fast cuts during the fight scenes to be distracting but I understand why they had to do that.

I also liked Woody Harrelson and his character. Jennifer Lawrence did great a great job and is becoming one of my favorite actresses.

Knew the basics but ended up getting hooked.

Really good job setting up the action, didn't feel overly long, love the different elements of Oprah, Sports Center, The Truman Show, a Miss America pageant, and Survivor.

Also I enjoyed the diversity of the cast, especially all the people of color in the Capitol audience scenes.

Nice to see they aren't just relegated to the poor Districts.

Holy shit, its damn near a straight ripoff of Battle Royale.
From the TV show, little kids, different weapons, island, speakers that communicated to the contestants and the profile of the dead.

With the exception of the shaky cam and super quick cuts, I liked the film and thought it was well done.
I might check out the books.

The ONLY thing similar to Battle Royale is that it's children chosen to kill each other off with the last survivor as the winner.

You may as well said it's the child version of GLADIATOR if that's the case!

Other than that it's kids killing off kids for "sport", there's NOTHING similar between the two films, especially when you include The Hunger Games trilogy into play!

Off the top of my head,

Kids killing kids, from little ones with no chance to older teenagers who seem to be built for it.
Running in packs.
Romance with the leads.
Televised event.
Each kid getting a backpack of essentials.
Variation of weapons.
Eccentric host of the event.
Bio of each kid killed.
Island setting with communications to the contestants from the showrunners.
Island borders control by the showrunners (kinda hazy on this)

There are a few others but there are a lot of similarities.
Like I said, I dug the film and would like to check out the books but these things can not be a coincidence.

..this is kinda tough

mostly because there was nothing specifically "wrong" with this film, but i still left the theater feeling like the movie was missing something.

i agree with melanism, the movie definitely needed more character development. i'm not sure if they felt like hearing katniss' thoughts would've taken away from the viewing experience, but that's somethin' that usually helps. if you saw "winter's bone" you know that jennifer lawrence is more than capable of an incredible range of emotion on film.

the cinematography was ok, but there were plenty of times where i wished they would've taken more time for shots, patient with scenes, and allowed the scenery to command more of a presence. (they didn't even show much detail regarding the outside of the train).

the last 30 minutes felt like they were basically rushing, and the final fight was weak.

..and miles to go before i sleep...

I actually LIKED the fact that District 11 started to riot at the death of Rue. I wish they would have explained what the salute meant. And I wish they would have had some signal between the people of District 11 that actually showed that their riot was not random but a planned event.

Woody Harrelson as Haymitch was great!
Donald Sutherland as Pres Snow was another excellent choice.

I think Lenny was underused in his role as Cinna. I felt that his role was minimized and took away from what he was in the book. Which is the trouble with these things...one reads the book and then the movie falls short.

I did like the cut aways to the Gamemakers and the family back home in District 12 since that's missing from the book.

see more interaction between the tributes who were more visible during the games,I thought that would have added more emotion when they got killed. I have read the first book so I totally understand why the kids are so aggressive-its a deathmatch but to me I would have been fucked up in the head if I had to kill another kid,the kids seemed emotionless at times. I understand the career tributes mindset but still...

i didn't read the books.
i wanted to see this on the strength of good reviews and hype from film critics.
the plot seemed to show some promise and potential. jennifer lawrence is also a talented actress.

i thought one of the biggest flaws was how they spent too much time pre-game--and it wasn't even used to develop the characters. it lacked depth. you have these crazy dressed people, as if they were in a fashion show but kookier, and you have katniss looking serious and emotionally detached while peeta was nervous and insecure. it felt like we were very third person, we saw what was happening, but not what was going on in these character's heads. basically the first hour was a waste and a missed opportunity to bring depth and meaning to the story and characters.

the action sequences were ok. pretty much its saving grace. but i was still starting to get bored, thinking, when is this going to be over? i didn't like how rue died, but the rioting afteward in her district brought some humanity to the film. no parent should just watch idly while their child is sent to be slaughtered.

i think this film would have worked better if it was narrated partly by katniss, or someone who knew her well. then we wouldn't feel so disconnected.

i left the theater feeling like, wow, i can't even say this was a good movie. it was just OK. Not good, but not bad. Just whatever. I wish I had watched something else. Hell, maybe I would've enjoyed John Carter more.

Didn't read the books, but my cousin was heavily recommending them to me at Christmas. The trailers looked promising. I like dystopian futures. The good reviews started rolling in...

But we never got to know these characters. Everything was rushed. Rue was far too rushed. I don't know how a movie that was 2 and a half hours long feels so rushed.

I didn't even think the action scenes were anything special.

It was okay.

That's it.

as someone who never read the books or even heard about this before a couple weeks ago, I went in blind not really knowing what to expect. I think some backstory about why things were the way they are now in the world would have helped a lot, because I'm still kinda puzzled as to who the Capitol is, what the rebellion was that caused them to have the Hunger Games in the first place, what the whole three finger salute meant, just a lot of unanswered questions that left me guessing as someone who never read the book.

I agree that the action was shot horribly, I kept wishing the camera would have just panned back 5-10 feet during the final fight scene, the screen was just a jumble of action.

Question, was the whole arena/killing field computer generated? I was trying to figure out how they could just create those dog like animals on a computer screen and just drop them into the game, also when they started the fire and could drop a tree wherever they needed it to go.

something drastic happened and left the world in 13 districts. the 13th was supposedly destroyed in war and riots. as punishment for destroying the 13th district, the hunger games started.

the 12th district is suppose to be in the Appalachian Mountains.

Either way I agree that there needs to be a prequel. I'd like to see her write what led up to the hunger games...tho I think i should get a sense in book 2. and i want to read a book on how haymitch survived the games

as for your question...I wonder that too. in the book it's written from first person and she never answers that BUT hover crafts come into the arena and pick up the dead bodies...so i think its some random area in the world that they use but can also project holograms into.

"real" or "computer generated"
because how I read it, it was a real area (take the Sahara desert) where they could use computers, etc to generate things to happen.

However in the second book the new head Gamemaker says it takes time to design an arena which makes me confused again.

so is it in an area of actually land that they use and just enhance with computers(making it an arena by placing boundaries), or is it an actual encased arena like the Terror Dome?

but i digress. i guess if they say arena it would mean a real enclosed arena?

In the book, the dogs at the end each represent one of the dead tributes (including Rue). Katniss can see the faces of each dead tribute on each of the dogs. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing how they did this in the movie, and was even more disappointed when it was skipped.

In response to Reply # 0

The entire time things were happening I continued to question my investment...

"I feel like I should care about this character but I don't."

I didn't care about Rue or Peeta or anyone. I didn't completely villainize the Gamemakers, I didn't particularly have any compelling support for Katniss.

The film was great up until the part where they got on the train and then all character development just kind of stopped.

Confusing story arcs never really did their thing like the love story, or why Hambrigg or whatever Woody's name is, why he was drunk and surly.

There was just no emotional investment into this film.

And I never felt scared for anyone during the games. It was all so blazay about the fact that these kids were murdering each other.

The film just never achieves much of anything.

If you read the book you had a deeper understanding of what was happening but everyone else was left questioning everything.

It was explained to me by someone who read the book how he was significant being he was the only victor from district 12 who was still alive and that he was uber depressed because he had to murder 23 kids but other than that I just saw Woody Harrelson being drunk with a goofy haircut. They never conveyed that emotion or dynamic well at all.

I agree that they could have went a bit more in depth to Woodys character but they did mention that he was the only winner in D12. Knowing what the Hunger Games is about and what it takes to win it, it doesn't take much to connect the dots that the winner of the Hunger Games probably grows up to have some social issues and PTS type syndrome.

Unless of course you come from Districts 1 and 2.

they basically made haymitch look like a surly drunkard who could give a fuck about the games or its contestants, when in fact, his history with the games is the reason for his current demeanor.

they didn't need a long drawn out scene for this. all of it could be handled well in fluid convo. they didn't show much in the way training or dialogue, just his reinforcement that they MUST earn the favor of the sponsors.

Agree with a lot of what is said above.

Biggest complaint that hasn't already been mentioned: casting Peeta & Gale as traditional hunky hollywood guys.

Peeta was supposed to be a little goofy.

Gale was supposed to be good looking but his family is starving to death (hence 42 entries in return for food), so making him hunky & stocky was dumb.

I found the casting of those two characters distracting.

Considering it's a big hollywood movie production, the Jennifer Lawrence casting was pretty good. Still too pretty & shapely for Katniss, who was slight and on the small side, but all in all, it was fine. I thought her performance was great.

I hear the complaints that the characters dont' get developed and you don't get a lot of backstory, but that's the fundamental hurdle when a great book gets adapted to the screen. The context, the details.

I think the single biggest thing missing in the movie is the darkness, the cynicism of Katniss and really of all of the poorer districts. I assume this was pretty intentional b/c the studio wanted to appeal to a wider audience and not depress people. Also I know the studio had a very challenging job in trying to sell a movie to teens (and parents) that is about teens killing each other.

On that note they did a great job IMO.

But yeah, the main thing missing from the books is the dark edge to Katniss & everyone else.

Strange....the women I talked to say that Peeta
was repulsively cornballish and not hunky at all

This includes the woman I saw it with

Petta is attractive in the thoughtful/artist/metrosexual/
sensitive sense, but he's hardly "hunky"...and even if
he is in real life, he was definitely not in the movie

I read the book after I saw it and was like:

"Oh shit, he was perfectly cast."

I thought Peeta was damn near perfect

Can't agree with your Gale synopsis either

He's supposed to be thin but not starving...and
I don't think he was "muscular" like Cate...he
looked lean and athletic, no homo

You gotta think about people in Africa and SA
today who are from poor places...not everyone is
emaciated

He can still be athletic and strong

And his name was in 42 times to feed his *family*

Him and Katniss would be fine on their own hunting

They struggle because they take care of people

The only really poor casting were the people from
district 2 and 4:

District 1 is all tall, good looking blondes

But district 2 is more mixed and diverse, so Cato
should have looked different...he looked like a
high school quarterback...he's supposed to look
outright MEAN and nasty. And Clove was 3 years too
young...district 2 folks are supposed to be careers
who volunteer at age 18...she was 15/16 years old,
tops...and she was tiny...she did look mean, though

District 4 usually has careers too and they had that
one sorry little boy with the curly hair

..and i'm not tryin' to shit on the film or the books

i knew the buzz surrounding the series was pretty strong, but initially i resisted reading them just to give it time to breathe. once i finally decided to dive in, i was happy to see that the writing was solid.

halfway through "catching fire," my attention started to wane a bit. the hype leading up to the movie release for the 1st book was becoming annoying, so i chalked it up to that and kept moving forward.

then i saw the film.

i don't wanna trash it, but this might be the first time in my life that a movie has all but turned me off from finishing a series. i might need a break before attempting to read mockingjay.

*another problem i had with the film:

while they worked very hard to invoke compassion from the audience, they never seemed to establish desire in any of the characters.

i saw/felt desperation
i saw hopeless

but i never saw the transformation from despair to desire. to me, that was crucial in the novel. peeta's character in the film was beyond pitiful. he spent the entire time sulking, resigned to what he considered an inevitable defeat.

even in the face of fear, the desire for survival would have done wonders for this film.

And Peeta, I just feel all the way sorry for his ass. Jesus Christ.

Story has a fantastic premise.

The build-up and suspense during scenes leading up to the the 'games' was good, albeit slow.

Jennifer Lawrence isn't just great to look at, she's a really good actress, and a great pick to lead the film.

Now, the problems...

There was too much left on the table. Way too much.
I haven't read the book, but I it seems, from what I've read and heard from people who have, that plenty was left out.
The secondary characters (which is basically everyone except Katniss) aren't great. The different districts weren't explored at all, sponsors were barely explained, it was just lacking from key areas.

And then there's the action scenes, what the whole movie was leading up to... and they were like the director said 'fuck it' and threw the camera into a bunch of teenagers who were wrestling, and going with it. I kept thinking how cool this would have been IF I COULD HAVE JUST SEEN WHAT WAS GOING ON. Who died? Who killed who?

You don't need violence to have a good movie, but this one would have benefited very much so from a little bit.

I didn't hate it, but I can't say I liked it either.

It did make me want to watch Battle Royale again, though.

I saw the comments up above about the need for a prequel that gives the history of the Hunger Games and where we see how Haymitch won his year's games. I don't think we need all of that but we certainly could have used more than a 60-second title card at the beginning that explains the setup. It would have been nice to see some kind of brief filmed (and jump-cut) history of Panem, and a map of the territory, and some sort of feel for what the Games are and were. Nothing egregious, just a 3-minute clip or something that clearly explains the premise of the story for the non-book readers in attendance.

That said, I loved that roughly the first hour of the movie is ALL setup for the games themselves. We needed to see everything in that hour before we got into combat. Only thing, though, is I wish we would have seen more of Gale, specifically more on his thoughts on the whole Games deal, especially since they play a crucial role in the next two stories. And it would have also been nice to get more of his relationship with Katniss, since he's supposed to be in this love triangle, because all we got was that he kicked it with Katniss for a minute in the woods, then later we saw him looking sad when Katniss kissed Peeta. That was it.

And that was a problem for me with the two male leads as a whole: they're reacting to what's happening to Katniss because the story says they're supposed to react that way instead of having those moments be earned. I already mentioned the Gale thing, and we were also supposed to glean from a brief flashback that Peeta has this thing for this girl that he once tossed a loaf of bread to. Which in and of itself is a bit of a change from the book, where you didn't really know what Peeta's intentions were once he started playing the game...

Even if you deviate from the book we still need scenes where we see, and more importantly *feel* that these two dudes are absolutely head-over-heels for this broad, for whatever reasons: she can hunt and is competitive and fun to hang with, she does an admirable job of taking care of her sister, she can cook the shit out of a squirrel, she's simply fucking hot... something other than, "Well, the story says I'm supposed to say I like you, Katniss, so I'll do that here"...

I didn't mind the removal of Katniss' narration and I thought it was actually skillfully handled by Ross, Collins, and Ray. The only problem with that is that some of the soul of the story was removed as a result, and I was hoping that it reappear somewhere other than in Lenny's hairdo.

Speaking of which, I thought Lenny was basically playing himself in a futuristic costume designer setting, which is okay. At least he wasn't extra-flamboyant and "glam," which is what I feared when it was announced that he was cast.

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was very, very good as Katniss. I still think the character skews younger, but otherwise her performance was quite good.

Like I said I thought that the two male leads weren't developed enough as characters. Both guys weren't given much to play except, "look sad and forlorn when something happens to Katniss," so that was a letdown, especially with Peeta, whom as I said played things more close to the vest in the book.

I thought that Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley, and Woody were all good. It felt like a good deal of Elizabeth Banks' performance was left on the cutting room floor. Her performance was hard to gauge.

I remain annoyed that (to me) Rue was the Magical Singing and Healing Negro Child who was a Noble Sacrifice for the white girl's ultimate glory. But maybe I'm just reading too much into that. The girl was adorable, though.

Here's a note to Gary Ross for the future films: just because you've described the films as independents disguised as blockbusters does not mean you should PEPPER THE FUCKING SCREEN WITH EXCESSIVE HANDHELD CAMERAWORK. Cmon. No, seriously, cmon. I mean, I get what you were going for, the handheld was kinda-sorta like Katniss' point of view, but you can't use that extensively then cut to scenes that don't involve her in any way. You don't get to cheat, Gary, so keep that shit to a minimum in the next film. Thanks.

In all, I was entertained but not as much as I would have hoped. I usually try not to be one of those "but in the book they..." guys, and in this case I had hoped to see a little more from the guys (and I understand whose story this ultimately is) as well as get a little more background about this world...

Saw the flick, listening to the audio book

Aside from the physical description, Collins goes out of her way to say

- dist 11 is agricultural
- they work out in the fields
- a small kid tries to steal some glasses, and the overseer/officer (c) krs-1, kills him. Katniss makes a distinction of how the overseers treat them.
- she loves music
- they sing in the fields while they gather up produce

Not only is Rue black, she's a *slave*

2 things I didn't like we're the ending which I felt was rushed, and the love story. One minute she doesn't give a damn about him, or is even annoyed by him, then she suddenly falls for him. I'm sure they did the best they could with the time they had though and that the book explains this better.

He was pretty much the only character that surpassed his role in the book, and whose personality came off stronger and more clearly defined than in the book. In comparison, everybody else just didn't have enough character development to really get a sense of who they were and what they had invested in the games.

I read this whole post....but I can't help but see this flick from my own perspective as a parent.

Seeing this movie with all those little tweeners....awesome.

I felt like there was a huge flaw in the protaganist's perception of the rules/regulations. If it was such a huge media event that everyone watched and was such a dominant force in their lives....why did they need to be prepared/taught about the governing details of the game?

But honestly, I overlooked all those kinds of critique because of the audience in the theatre. Can't help but romanticize the purpose that a story/franchise like this can have on young girls and boys. The implications in gender-identity, class, self-esteem.....a welcome replacement to the 'twilight' craze.

Love this one for the kids.

In response to Reply # 0

First off, Jennifer Lawrence continues to be a beast. Personal crush aside(and im sure im not in the minority with that lol), just a terrific job. She has such a presence on screen and further has that nuanced ability to portray emotions with just slight expressions. Her performance is only rivaled by Stanley Tucci as Ceasarman who absolutely nailed everything. Completely owned that role, he's the face I now envision when I think about the character.

Having read the books, I loved seeing how the games were actually run and seeing Haymitch schmoozing sponsors. However, doing my best to separate the knowledge I do already have from the books and trying to envision myself as walking in not knowing anything, I feel that the movie would have been better served to devote that time to better developing the relationships/motivations between Katniss and Gale and Katniss and Peeta. The relationships weren't really earned but instead you are basically just told...so when you see Gale looking away from the screen, it doesn't resonate like it truly should. The Katniss/Cinna relationship also didn't resonate...Kravitz was great but just not enough there to earn it. These 3 are the crux of the entire series and I was disappointed we didn't get their full stories and development to really reel us in not only for this movie but for the entire series. Obviously the trade-off you always have from books to movies is that you lose some of the story and development but I felt the opportunity was there, just not given the time it required.

Awesome as a supplement since you can automatically fill in a lot of between the lines, but not developed enough to stand on its own as a good film. Also, chill with the hand-cam shots. I didn't mind it during the opening cornucopia seen that much because it gives that jarring sense of change but I got more and more annoyed as it was utilized throughout the games, particularly during the fight w Cato.

As you said above in your initial review, it's a meh movie without having read the books....and that brings up the honest question: why would a writer, director, and author choose to include supplemental material like showing how the actual games are controlled in lieu of developmental material that would add far more to the movie itself, particularly knowing this material is the foundation for a trilogy. Selfishly, as someone who enjoyed the books, it was great but as someone who also loves film, that choice to go with ancillary material instead of core development is beyond me. There were some very questionable decisions made on imo obvious choices that basically turned a movie that could have been above-average on its own merit into supplemental material. I just don't get why lol.

The powerful symbolism of the mockingjay pin was never conveyed and the quote by Peeta, which he again utilizes in book 3, 'she doesn't know the affect she has on people'. Both could have been easily included in about 20-30 seconds of film. The power of the pin by telling the story of how the mockingjays were tools that the capitol created which were used against them in the war (an obvious parallel to Katniss emerges) and Peeta easily could have said that quote at a dinner table scene like he does in the book. I felt both were huge oversights considering their importance to the plot/characters and could have been inserted relatively easily in the context of the movie.

but the protagonist fights in a skintight catsuit.lol. Story just does not have any depth. I have not read the book but based on what i have read here i would have to say the book seems pretty subpar.

Plutarch -- great. Glad Hoffman gettin that money. I
think he's overqualified but this HG trilogy doesn't
seem to be fucking around on the acting. Jennifer
Lawrence acting like she tryna win an Oscar or some
shit

Johanna Mason -- I pictured her a tad older but her look
seems right

Finnick -- Eh. I'm a black straight male so maybe I'm
not the one to judge but I think he looks just like the
rest of the whiteboys in the movie. Finnick is supposed
to be more exotic looking, I was looking for a white
Puerto Rican at least, no homo

Brutus, Gloss, Glimmer Mags, Seeder, Chaff -- all very good

Wiress -- Great. Nuts and volts need to be very good actors.

Enobaria -- HOLY SHIT. Not only is she the meanest
bitch in the whole trilogy she's the finest woman in
the whole trilogy. And her being a sun goddess is fine
with me because all of the other black characters are
good guys

I like those choices, I can only see Gloss as Tad Castle from BMS ad that chick Cashmere looks pretty I wonder how that brother sister team will do.

I love this casting, this was a great pull

I can't wait to see what they put her in, i'ma need them to do two versions, the PG-13 and then the unrated so I can see Enobaria in them skeevies dog.

Great casting all the way around, i just hope that the story plays out a little better than the first one did.

And it wasn't the way the role was written, since the whole script seemed to come straight from the Twilight school of lingering stares and fraught pauses. Everytime he was on screen, he bored the crap out of me. And this was a movie with a lot of boring stuff in it.

I think the amount of TV I've watched since I was a little kid has really eroded my visual imagination, so I kind of rely on quality adaptations to provide pictures to text. The 7a and 7b Harry Potter movies, for instance, were totally necessary for me because the book described these intense fight scenes that left me scratching my head wondering what was going on.

All that said, I didn't picture Finnick like this guy at all. Still, the first movie was a nice, tight adaptation that seemed to pick up on the important plot points and the spirit of the book pretty well. So I'll trust the experts.

The third book is going to be a challenge though. That was a chaotic narrative and has the potential to be a real mess of a movie.

After reading the books you have at least some perspective on how and why things are happening the way they're happening.

The way this movie was made they leave you feeling incredibly empty all to get to the games, but not letting anyone know why certain things are important.

Katniss and Cinna's relationship, he holds a special place in his heart for her, WHY? we don't see any interaction before that would lead us to know that they have a connection, instead he's telling her "i'm not allowed to bet, but if I were it would be on you." WHY

The movie just flys past stuff, I would rather them leave certain big moments from the book out to tell a better story. We have NO indication as Gale and Katniss' romantic relationship, I had big issues with the movie.

I liked Jennifer Lawrence a lot, but they just bulldozed through soem really important shit.

>After reading the books you have at least some perspective on
>how and why things are happening the way they're happening.

Nah, actually that's not true

Katniss doesn't reveal a whole lot during the book

So the movie did a decent job of revealing what she knew
at the time

>The way this movie was made they leave you feeling incredibly
>empty all to get to the games, but not letting anyone know why
>certain things are important.

They don't explain this in the book very well, either

The whole point of the story is how Katniss comes of age
and figures shit out and comes to understand herself and
the world

That only comes along as the story unfolds

>Katniss and Cinna's relationship, he holds a special place in
>his heart for her, WHY? we don't see any interaction before
>that would lead us to know that they have a connection,
>instead he's telling her "i'm not allowed to bet, but if I
>were it would be on you." WHY

I don't understand this point. The book doesn't explain
this in any great detail.

>The movie just flys past stuff, I would rather them leave
>certain big moments from the book out to tell a better story.
>We have NO indication as Gale and Katniss' romantic
>relationship, I had big issues with the movie.

Uh...are you serious? Gale and Katniss had no romantic
interaction prior to the games in the book, same as the
movie

>I liked Jennifer Lawrence a lot, but they just bulldozed
>through soem really important shit.

I disagree..the ONLY THING the film could have done better
is had her narrating from time to time...that might have
helped a bit with some of the details

Otherwise the transition was pretty goddamn well done
