In response to Reply # 5

is more of an achievement from a purely *i get walks* standpoint than people not pitching to you because you're such a good hitter that they've decided they'd rather give up one base than four.

late career bonds on base ismostly a bullet dodged and a liability on the paths...even if it's much less preferable to an out. rickey could do damage with a bat but he was equallly or more dangerous (depending on the point in his career and in the game) after a walk than when he was swinging.

7. "no, they walked him cuz he worked the count and had a good AB"
In response to Reply # 5

a walk is a walk, obviously, but an intentional walk is indicative of fear of a hitter, or the situation (i.e. 1st base is open), rather than indicative of the hitter's eye and ability to work a count

In response to Reply # 7

At least, not for the nearly a decade, as it's been years since he tried stealing bases, and that was before his knee inuries.

You walk Rickey, and he could turn easiliy turn it into double.

I will say that Bonds has a great eye, however. But Rickey was better at working a count.

If it's 2nd inning, no score, nobody on base, most definitely.

But if he could potentially win the game with a swing of his bat, fuck no.

Basically, the record would have no bearing on my decision

yeah, as I remember it, everyone was happy, gloating "baseball
is back", Big Mac and Sosa have revived the game. now, it's
baseball's "black eye"

but I only remember overwhelming enthusiasm about that whole
period, I know I was watching more games than ever. baseball
had tons of media coverage and increased interest among
casual fans.

I only remember "purists" being really angry, and a lot of the
anger was directed at the bats being so thin/light, the ball being
"juiced," the fields being too small, and the players taking
supplements and working out more

21. "Hit Tracker Online and Bonds"
In response to Reply # 0

Here's a great interview with the guy who invented "Hit Tracker", who thinks he can call homerun distance accurately within 1-2 ft. It's worth poking around there for awhile, as it has links to video of a lot of HRs. It's a fine way to waste time throughout the day.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/hit-tracker-interview-part-1/

Here's the actual site:

http://www.hittrackeronline.com/index.php

And here's Bonds' scatter for HRs hit in 2007:

http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2007_614&type=hitter

23. "Anybody want to make some predictions?"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue May-22-07 10:56 AM by Walleye

Give me the date, the number of men on base, the opposing pitcher and the distance. We'll use the link to HitTracker that I posted as the final judge of the distance rather than potentially conflicting media reports and the almost never reliable in-stadium trackers. Deal?

I'll go first:

July 15th vs. Los Angeles
Nobody on
Brad Penny
412 feet

This is several weeks off of what a few predictions I've seen have been. It might be a considerable mistake to imagine that DHing in interleague wont get him hot again, but I think that seeing some pitchers he hasn't seen before is going to keep him from accelerating his pace during that time. I also think that Giants' management would prefer to have him break it at home, which could get somewhat inconvenient given a six game roadtrip of tiny ballparks and/or bad pitching right before the All-Star Break. So, I guess I'm basing my prediction on the idea he gets held out of a few of these games, though I don't feel entirely comfortable doing so. I've also predicted that he wont hit 756 on one of the numerous games that FOX has already picked up. Obviously, they'll make sure each PA is televised as we lead up to the big homer, but my firm belief in the principle of anti-climax insists that TV people wont be allowed to build it up.

Any other guesses?

There's the expectation of what's going to happen: as you (even jokingly) say, Boston's racism will show its self. But really, short of mock lynchings, I doubt it will be any more severe than what Barry gets when he plays in LA, for example. However, let's say some take Ortiz's words to heart, then that'll be an excuse to argue, look, Boston's not racist. But, again, anything short of a ticker-tape parade, and it will be no different than the thousands of fans who boo when Bonds bats but stand up and applaud when he (eventually) hits a home run, or boo their own team when he's walked even.

In short, Boston is neither racist or unracist (ha), and Barry's appearance will only be a gauge of the mood of thirty thousand baseball fans at that particular time.

bonds steals second, then later scores, michael kay starts talking about Bonds was showing off because he stole a base...

later he has words for mussina after an intentional walk, al leiter starts wondering why he's complaining (and acts like its no big deal that the mighty yankees & mussina resort to walking bonds with no outs and a man on first)

cant wait til he breaks the record.

and i ride for the yanks (more or less)

57. "673"
In response to Reply # 0

That's the number of intentional walks Bonds has received in his career, with a peak of 120 in 2004. That actually makes the intentional walk environment of 2001, when everybody was clamoring "pitch to Barry!" seem positively restrained with only 35 IBBs. Obviously, pitching to him means more than simply not intentionally walking him, but he slugged over .850 that year and as much as I think the intentional walk is an overused tactical measure, I wouldn't have pitched to him either. Who wants to give up an 800 ft. homerun every time they throw a strike?

Anyhow, back to the original number of 673... Does anybody want to guess how many plate appearances Bonds made in his record-setting season of 2001? Don't check, I'll tell you: 664. 673 is right near the high end of his single season bests for plate appearances, which basically means that Barry Bonds has spent an entire season of his career standing and watching a pitcher lob four pitches to a catcher standing safely seven feet away. A full season.

That's scaring teams.

That's Bonds' line in 41 plate appearances against Mike Bielecki. That there's a pitcher who managed to get the best of him isn't as surprising as the number of plate appearances. For an otherwise unremarkable pitcher, Bielecki is pretty rare.

A review of Bonds' pitcher matchups on retrosheet.org shows that if he saw you more than 30 times, you were usually fucked. Good pitchers like Orel Hershiser, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Randy Johnson and Dwight Gooden all saw him too many times and were up in the .900+ OPS category against Bonds.

If our mining includes the small sample sizes, my favorite entry was Chad Bradford vs. Bonds:

9 PA, 8 BB, 1H, 1HR. That's a 5.000 OPS and a fine example of why pitchers of Bradford's rather limited skillset shouldn't really face LH power hitters under any circumstances.

Barry's homer tied the game, so it meant something for a while, but
these losses gotta be pissing him off. And after the record's been
broken, stadium attendance will likely tumble down some as well.

Therefore, he needs to hit a couple more before the break.

This would be classic.

If he is closer to the record the day the Cubs/Giants series starts at Wrigley-- and the wind is blowing out, and its a night game-- I may actually chill out on Waveland Ave with the goofs.

on second thought, maybe not....it would be nice to have the option tho.

When it comes to rooting for Barry Bonds to become the home run champion, one factor stands out: race.

An AP-Ipsos poll released Monday showed 55 percent of minority baseball
fans want Bonds to set the record, while only 34 percent of non-Hispanic
white baseball fans hope he passes Hank Aaron's record.

In response to Reply # 0

I thought this was pretty funny. Though, aren't half of ESPN's main baseball broadcasts usually the night games on getaway days? I thought they did Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday games, all in the evening. Sunday and Thursday are almost always series-enders, short of a scheduling abnormality, and it's always seemed to me that national telecast notwithstanding playing on those evenings when the other teams get to finish in the daytime and start their traveling earlier is kind of a pain. With Bonds' age/health concerns, those Sunday and Thursday games seem like good candidates to avoid.

I haven't looked to see when the ESPN games that he missed were, it's just food for thought. Either way, I'd be perfectly happy if he actually were boycotting ESPN. It's a sound principle for pretty much any reason.

Bonds and ESPN

by Nate Silver

I’m tired and road-weary. I am going to get to go to Dodger Stadium tomorrow, which is very cool. But that isn’t helping me to remember math that I last studied a decade or so ago, so I’m probably missing something with respect to multiple endpoints or something like that, and can expect a helpful e-mail from Keith Woolner or Tom M. Tango tomorrow. But here’s what I’m getting on the Bonds hates ESPN hypothesis.

Barry Bonds has not started 16 of the 91 games that the Giants have played so far this season. There are 260,462,895,672,871,000 (260 quadrillion) possible combinations of games that Bonds might have “chosen” to miss. For example, Bonds missing Giants games # 88, 4, 62, 18, 22, 23, 61, 2, 91, 54, 87, 10, 58, 19, 65 and 83 is one such combination.

Of those combinations, 1,200,635,647,008,340 (1.2 quadrillion) involve each of the three Giants games that have been nationally televised on ESPN this season, as well as any other set of 13 non-ESPN games.

In other words, the probability that if Bonds were picking 16 out of 91 games at random to miss, it would so happen that all 3 of the ESPN games were included among those 16, is 1,200,635,647,008,340 divided into 260,462,895,672,871,000, or about 215-to-1 against.

So this is relatively unlikely to be just a coincidence.

It's ridiculous how much he absolutely abhors Bonds.

The whole article is a list of things to do to deal with Bonds breaking the record.

One such suggestion: Hold a sign that says "SEVEN FILTHY SIX"

Wow, you're such a clever guy, Rick.

but in his defense, he has been one of the loudest mouths against steroids and he has been relatively evenhanded. he was chasing sammy sosa with a specimen cup years ago and on a number of guys' asses about it before that was so fashionable.

in general though, he might be the most overrated writer in the country.

Selig: I'll be there for Bonds
By Tim Brown, Yahoo! Sports
July 24, 2007

Tim Brown
Yahoo! Sports

SAN FRANCISCO – Baseball commissioner Bud Selig intends to be present for Barry Bonds' next three home runs, fitting Bonds' chase of the all-time home-run record around this weekend's Hall of Fame induction of Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken, Selig announced Tuesday afternoon.

Selig will attend tonight's game at AT&T Park, where the San Francisco Giants host the Atlanta Braves. Bonds has 753 career home runs, two shy of Hank Aaron, Selig's long-time friend. Bonds faces Braves right-hander Tim Hudson, against whom he has nine hits, four of them home runs, in 19 at-bats, a .474 average.

In his statement, a previously conflicted Selig said, "Now that he is on the verge of tying the record, the time has come to announce I will make every attempt to attend the record-setting moment," saying that he chose to witness the event "out of respect for the tradition of the game, the magnitude of the record, and the fact that all citizens of this country are innocent until proven guilty."

Bonds is suspected of using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, enabling him to arrive at the brink of the game's most revered record. A federal grand jury is investigating whether Bonds perjured himself nearly four years ago when he told a previous grand jury he had not knowingly taken steroids. Bonds' childhood friend and former personal trainer, Greg Anderson, is in prison for refusing to cooperate with the grand jury.

Selig would leave the chase for a day or two – or more, depending on Bonds' proximity to the record – to be in Cooperstown.

Tim Brown is a national baseball writer for Yahoo! Sports. Send Tim a question or comment for potential use in a future column or webcast.

The most impressive feat for Bonds yesterday, on his 43rd birthday no less, happened to be a catch out in left. Ever since the 2-Hr Chicago game, he's looked a little slow at bat.

110. "Interview with Jeff Pearlman (Bonds' biographer) - (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

Jeff Pearlman, On His Subject Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds remains just two homers away from Hank Aaron's record, and in the wake of this historic and confounding achievement, we felt we should talk to a guy who knows the life of Bonds better than anyone else in the media: Jeff Pearlman, Bonds' biographer in Love Me, Hate Me. We've interviewed Pearlman when the book came out, but with all that's going on, we felt a revisiting was worth our time.

So, henceforth, our interview with Jeff Pearlman about this weird moment in sports history, in which one of the game's most hallowed marks is about to be broken by a guy everybody hates. (Pearlman is currently working on a book about the 1990s Dallas Cowboys, the progress of which you can track here.

When we interviewed you when your book first came out, you said, "Bonds doesn't want Aaron's record. I'm convinced of this," pointing out that Bonds would lose a ton of African American support. At the time, we absolutely understood this. What changed, if anything? Or were you just wrong?

Hate to admit it, but I was apparently wrong. It's funny--I interviewed more than 500 people for my book, and the hardest thing was finding anyone with a positive thing to say about Bonds. I dug and dug and dug and dug, and the one pro-Bonds thought that was regularly repeated was that--if nothing else--the man has a profound respect for the history of the sport. You know, his dad being Bobby Bonds, his uncle being Willie Mays, his cousin being Reggie Jackson, two of his childhood heroes being Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron.

But in the time since I made that prediction to you about Barry, I've had a chance to re-read my book, go through old notes, do some promotional stuff, etc. And the truth of the matter is, Bonds is completely, undeniably 100 percent full of shit. He truly is. I no longer buy his love of baseball history any more than I buy the sanctity of his marriages or the purity of his blood stream. I was at Shea when the Giants came to New York a few weeks ago, and I had to laugh when hundreds of my media peers swarmed around him for comments. I understand why they were there, but it's a waste of time. Nothing he says holds any meaning. He'll say the sky is blue one second and red the next. He loves Dusty Baker, then he hates him. So on and so on. Bonds cares no more about baseball history than does my goldfish. He knows what Hank Aaron went through to hit 755 home runs, and he was more than happy to cheat, load up on steroids and HGH and surpass him.

Some have said that the feds are hounding Bonds unfairly, extending their investigation just to further embarrass him and shroud him in suspicion. Do you agree?

Anyone in the media who says they know the answer to this is either psychic or dishonest. It's impossible for me to say. My guess is that they have a legitimate reason to be going after Bonds, because it's pretty clear he didn't pay taxes on baseball-related earnings. Of course, there's a history of the government trying to make examples of celebs, from (recently) Martha Stewart to Paris Hilton to so on and so on. So if they're going after Bonds for his name, it wouldn't be the first time.

Is Bud Selig wimping out by not showing up to see Bonds break the record? Or is he making some sort of quiet, subtle protest? Do you think Hank Aaron drove this debate a little bit? That is to say, he was one of the first people to come out and say, "I don't want anyone who has done steroids to break this record." That shifted the conversation a little, we think.

First, huge praise goes to Hank Aaron, who has made an important statement throughout this whole ordeal. I was surprised by the number of journalists who have hammered Aaron for his stance, and I think it's disgraceful. Let's see--we have a man of undeniable integrity who went through unspeakable racial hatred while breaking Babe Ruth's cherished record. He turns a baseball mark into a baseball/civil rights mark. Seven hundred and fifty five is an American number, not a sports number. Aaron spends much of his career bemoaning cheaters and endorsing righteousness. Then Bonds comes along, cheats and erases Aaron from atop the greatest record in sports. Why in the world would Hank Aaron follow Bonds around? Bonds is as un-Hank Aaron as anyone this side of Ty Cobb.

As for Selig, he comes across as pathetic. The man presides over the steroids era, sits back and silently watches as McGwire and Sosa surpass Roger Maris, does nothing for years and years--and now he's so righteous? It's garbage. This is as much Bud Selig's record as it is Barry Bonds'. When the turnstiles were humming in '98 and '99 we heard nothing from Selig. Now that the media has exposed the fraud for everyone to see, he's Mr. Anti-Steroid. Insane.

You talked to hundreds of people for your book. Are you still in touch with any of them? What do they think of him breaking the record? Do even the people who loved him feel a little odd about it? On the other hand, do those who hate him respect the achievement?

I've maintained some contacts, and I know of no one who's actually happy that he's breaking the record. It's like I wrote in the book--Bonds has never treated people especially well, so there's very little loyalty for the man. Do you root for someone who refused to sign a ball for your kid? Who ignored you when you asked for advice? Who told you you couldn't carry his jock? I still often think of Dan Peltier, the former Giant backup who brought his young son to the team's Family Day. When Bonds asked the kid to name his favorite ballplayer, he said, "My dad!" To which Bonds replied, "Why? He never plays."

Any respect for Bonds is a respect for his ungodly ability as a baseball player, not for his personality or ethics.

That said, I'll tell you something that fascinates me. I contribute regular columns for ESPN's Page 2 now, and I've written a few anti-Bonds pieces. The reaction is almost entirely negative--you suck, you suck ass, you're only trying to promote your f-ing book (the irony being that bashing Bonds does not help my commercial cause). The media makes it sound like most people want Bonds to fail. I disagree--the media wants Bonds to fail. Most fans don't find him especially likable, but they're enamored by his achievements and size and longevity and the chance to see a record fall. Ethics? Ehhhh ... whatever.

Do you think there's any way, in 40 years, we'll look back on Bonds the way we look back at Maris, as a guy who got a bum rap from media while he was playing and was actually a true superstar? To put it with less hyperbole, when he retires, will his reputation improve?

Roger Maris lost his hair when he was setting the record. Barry Bonds' head was growing when he set the record. Roger Maris was a quiet, humble man who wanted the media to go away. Barry Bonds is a brash, arrogant man who wants the media to go away. Roger Maris' peer was Mickey Mantle, whom he genuinely embraced. Barry Bonds' peer was Jeff Kent, whom he genuinely detested. Roger Maris broke the record, tucked his head to his chin and rounded the bases. Barry Bonds will break the record and receive a new car or a golden bat or whatever the Giants lavish upon him. Maris was honest. Bonds is a cheater. In presidential history, time tends to shine an accurate light upon administrations. I believe the same goes for baseball. Forty years from now Bonds will be what he truly is--a once-in-a-lifetime talent who gave into greed and jealousy. An asterisk and a big, HGH-bloated head.

Few people have researched Bonds more than you have. Do YOU want him to break the record?

Here's the truth. I set out to write a fair, honest, balanced biography of a misunderstood legend. I did my absolute best, and the result is a book that I'm very proud of. I've received strong reviews, in part because I didn't take sides. Now that I'm well beyond the researching and writing; now that I'm beyond the promotional, 20-second soundbite push, I feel liberated to express my conclusion of the whole experience.

It is this: Barry Bonds is evil.

Alongside Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, he is responsible for the illegal, unethical tattering of the most important page of the baseball record book. I grew up knowing what 755 meant. Hell, my mom--who knows nothing about sports--understands 755. I hate--absolutely, positively hate--that Barry Bonds is doing this. I'm mad if my 6-year-old nephew cheats in first grade. So for Bonds to come along and cheat to surpass Aaron--it's criminal. I read writers like Bill Rhoden and Dave Zirin--guys I respect--and I just don't understand what the hell they're doing. They maintain there's no proof that Bonds used, so how can we condemn him? If we used that mode of thinking in day-to-day life, there'd be no need for juries. You either catch a person in the act of committing a crime or he's innocent. Factually--and I mean, 100% factually--Bonds used, and the evidence is overwhelming. Game of Shadows, my book, his ties to Greg Anderson and Victor Conte, the expansion (impossible, unless he used HGH or suffers from Acromegaly) of his skull, a former teammlate like Jay Canizaro telling me how Anderson said he can design a steroid cocktail for him that would be just like Barry's, so on and so on. Every time someone writes that there's no "proof," he/she is gifting the designers of masking agents. If we reward and praise the cheaters in sports, what are we saying to the kids who follow the games? What are we saying about decency and integrity?

I don't root against Bonds because he's a bad man. I root against him because he's a dishonest one. For me personally, this isn't an issue of race or class or status. It's an issue of someone taking the game I truly love and making a mockery of the whole thing.

all he can do is hit homeruns, and the "juice" is primarily what keeps him doing that. he can't field anymore (omar vizquel?) and he can't run like he use to (rickey henderson will be running until he is 90 so miss me with it)...your boy altered his body to hit HOME. RUNS.

he saw the attention that mark and sammy were getting for hitting homeruns, and went for it. primarily sammy though because sammy was a 30-30 guy at one point too, but turned into a mutated freak of nature power hitting machine...

The Jim Browns and Barry Sanders are few and far between. Most athletes don't quit on top and vanity has nothing to do with with. Also, why should he have quit with the record in his sights and he could still be a productive player?

look at his numbers, and barry sanders retired at the top of his game for whatever reason...

but imagine this, imagine jerry rice showing up for training camp at 290 lbs later in his career wanting to play linebacker or fullback, JUST to add years to his game and still remain relevant. people would think that were insane...barry bonds essentially did that.

around 1999, he knew that he was soon becoming that .290 or so hitter, hit about 25 homeruns, and drive in about 90 or so runs a year, and be done in about 4 or 5 years...barry wasn't having that. he turned himself into optimus prime and added about 10 years to his career.

I agree that he reached this point in large part because of "vanity," that is to say that desire to be SEEN as the best in the game if not ever. But I dont think he has stayed in the game out of vanity; he has remained capable despite injury. A lot of guys have hung out with a lot less in the tank.

when he was trying to break the record for most HR by a catcher, he was facing criticism for still playing catcher just to break the record, when it was clear he could be more help to the team at first base.

he said "i've worked very hard my entire career, and i've accomplished a lot of things. i'm very close to breaking a record that is very important, i shouldn't have to feel bad about wanting it."

bonds ended last season very close to the biggest record in baseball. he shouldn't feel bad about sticking around solely to break it.

In response to Reply # 0

Maybe the most gifted sportswriter in the country states it best:

TWO PLAYERS BUT ONLY ONE TRUE KING

An identity theft has just unfolded. In the crushing instant when Barry Bonds matched Hank Aaron’s legend in the second inning last night at Petco Park in San Diego, there were suddenly two Home Run Kings in baseball lore: one a vainglorious impostor, the other an authentic icon.

With the two standing side by side, Bonds is the sultan in the costume jewelry crown, his 755 home runs written into the books with the penmanship of a fabulist.

His distorted immortality is lab made. Aaron was self-made. He was a modest player drawn from reality, with everyman features, extraordinary talent and a social conscience.

So it seems like simple math to vilify Bonds and exalt Aaron in a split screen by the numbers, with one Brave’s consistency measured against a Giant’s synthetic spike.

But the heist of baseball’s most sacred record is a more complicated fraud. This was a journey to deception replete with passive accessories (Bud Selig), obfuscating co-conspirators (Don Fehr) and ham-handed federal investigators who never rounded the bag in time to stop Bonds.

The scam happened, as we knew it would. And nothing — not the two authors from “Game of Shadows” or a chatty mistress named Kimberly Bell or pennies tossed in a wishing well — could save what was real from betrayal.

A record alone wasn’t swiped, but also a time and a place and a belief linked to Aaron that will now be supplanted by a high-def vision of Bonds as the Home Run King.

Out with April of ’74. In with August of ’07. Out with the famous replay of Aaron that binds Baby Boomers and Gen Xers to a social transition in American history. In with an image of toy syringes and Magic Marker asterisks and steroid chants that tie disillusioned baseball fans to Bonds’s protesters, who, oddly enough, would ransack a nun’s habit to grab a homer by the antihero.

In with Bonds, who takes without feeling debt service to the game. Out with Aaron, who gave knowing what he meant to the game.
Different men, different worlds. The night Aaron passed Babe Ruth, with No. 715 in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the home run unfolded on television just as chromatic dials became a regular feature on Zeniths.

Black and white was so ’60s, except in skin tones. Aaron received nearly a million pieces of mail during his pursuit, many of them containing death threats and salutations that began with the word “Dear” and a racial slur.

Where else could he be more vulnerable to racists than in a batter’s box with walls made of chalk? But where else could his visibility have so strongly conveyed respect as an equal opportunity?

The visual of Aaron’s courage maintains its meaning. Always will. But as that reel is tucked into film vaults, as the new clips are loaded with Bonds as the symbol of grandeur instead of Aaron, the next generation will lose out on a ’70s scene that remains a necessary education.

Aaron prompted dialogue about race and politics and provided a tale of inspiration. And for many Americans, he meant relief from the oppression of daily burdens. In 1974, sports were still a diversion, whether from Watergate or the Patty Hearst kidnapping or even the divorce of Sonny and Cher.
T
he at-bats of Bonds aren’t an escape. For almost four years, baseball has longed for a diversion from Bonds. The game has never gained distance from the issues that revolve around him, including Balco and steroid investigations and George J. Mitchell and baseball officials who enabled a doping culture by clapping along as the league cashed in on the long ball during the mirage of power in the late ’90s.
• • •

If the past had to offer a nod to the present, why did Bonds have to be the one who took the bow?

Maybe Bonds isn’t a villain as much as he is a funhouse mirror to a super-sized nation, where distortion is bottled and sold, where silicone body parts are purchased like new tires.

There are many good folks playing baseball, but Bonds represents a culture of skepticism in sports and the modern-day mantra of achievement: Whatever it takes. Faking it seems wrong. And yet we dine on phony baloney. The Giants’ owner, Peter Magowan, recently said Bonds’s marks “will stand the test of time,” and, he added, “be looked back upon as important and good.”
• • •

Perspective is all local. But in a way, Magowan is right. Bonds’s record route will be revisited in perpetual highlights. He is now the go-to clip.

It’s on to a new identity for baseball. Aaron’s presence as Home Run King begged everyone to ask, What was the social value of his achievement? Bonds leaves all to wonder, What is the monetary worth of his home run ball?

The meaning of a record has been stolen. What remains? Many fingerprints and one counterfeit King.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i guess hank aaron was just a super-human being then, cause he hit more homeruns from age 35-39 than any other 5 year span in his career. 47 homeruns was his most in a season. that was at age 37. cmon, holla at me

he had hit 44 or more at least three times before he hit 47; how is that even CLOSE to the type of outlier Bonds produced in the record-setting season?

guess what year Aaron turned 35? 1969, the year they lowered the mound.

how many jacks did he hit after that? try 42 in three seasons.

there is absolutely no comparison between the push Aaron had late in his career and what Bonds did; that's a reach.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

any time you have something that divides people along racial lines--whether it's a murder trial or a guy hitting a ball with a stick--it's a bad look for both parties.

on one side, you got white people who never gave two shits about the history of the game and certainly that failed to recognize the contribution of black players to it suddenly acting like hank aaron is their godfather.

on the other, you got the same people who have (deservedly) stored a ton of anger at sheisty ass people who have cheated and acted selfishly in the past giving a dude doing the same a huge pass just because he is black and successful.

i think there are a lot of black people who have some trepidation about bonds's standing, in fact i know there are. almost everyone i work with that's black is rooting against him, in a couple cases as hard as any of these "bonds fire" idiots, just with more logical reasoning.

and there are others who have valid points about Bonds being less of a villain than he is made out to be. it is not like he is the only one juicing or that only hitters are using steroids and it is true that he was a fantastic player long before his head quadrupled in size.

there are some genuinely reverent whites--and fortunately some of them are in the media--that are aware of the fact that black players have excelled all over the diamond, in many cases being the absolute best at what they do in an era or all-time.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

#1> MLB, the media, currently irate fans, etc didn't ignore steroids usage in the past.

#2> Bonds had a positive steroid test & had been suspended for it.

If no one made a stink about steroids 5,7,10,15, etc years ago then making a stink about it now is a bit convenient to say the least. Where were all of these baseball purists 10 years ago?

The question you have to ask yourself if how many of the black people who support Bonds said nothing when McGuire & Sosa were hitting 60+ homeruns. My guess is not too many which would be consistent if they take the same stance now. If fact, that was pretty much EVERYONES stance when that was happening. It was all good...

Now fast-forward to 2007 & how many white folx who supported McGuire & Sosa all of a sudden have an issue with Bonds? Exactly.

Hey, no one thinks taking shortcuts is right but the fact of the matter is far too many people did it for far too long to single out Bonds, period.

It is what it is..

EXCLUSIVE: Barry Bonds' Home Run Record Tainted by Mechanical Device?

By Michael Witte

Published: August 06, 2007 10:45 AM

NEW YORK (Commentary) Beyond his alleged steroid use, Barry Bonds is guilty of the use of something that confers extraordinarily unfair mechanical advantage: the “armor” that he wears on his right elbow. Amid the press frenzy over Bonds’ unnatural bulk, the true role of the object on his right arm has simply gone unnoticed.

This is unfortunate, because by my estimate, Bonds’ front arm “armor” may have contributed no fewer than 75 to 100 home runs to his already steroid-questionable total.

Bonds tied Henry Aaron’s home run record of 755 on Saturday night and will go for the new standard this week back at home in San Francisco. As a student of baseball – and currently a mechanics consultant to a major league baseball team -- I believe I have insight into the Bonds "achievement." I have studied his swing countless times on video and examined the mechanical gear closely through photographs.

For years, sportswriters remarked that his massive "protective" gear – unequaled in all of baseball -- permits Bonds to lean over the plate without fear of being hit by a pitch. Thus situated, Bonds can handle the outside pitch (where most pitchers live) unusually well. This is unfair advantage enough, but no longer controversial. However, it is only one of at least seven (largely unexplored) advantages conferred by the apparatus.

The other six:

1) The apparatus is hinged at the elbow. It is a literal "hitting machine" that allows Bonds to release his front arm on the same plane during every swing. It largely accounts for the seemingly magical consistency of every Bonds stroke.

2) The apparatus locks at the elbow when the lead arm is fully elongated because of a small flap at the top of the bottom section that fits into a groove in the bottom of the top section. The locked arm forms a rigid front arm fulcrum that allows extraordinary, maximally efficient explosion of the levers of Bonds' wrists. Bonds hands are quicker than those of average hitters because of his mechanical "assistant."

3) When Bonds swings, the weight of the apparatus helps to seal his inner upper arm to his torso at impact. Thus "connected," he automatically hits the ball with the weight of his entire body - not just his arms - as average hitters ("extending") tend to do.

4) Bonds has performed less well in Home Run Derbies than one might expect because he has no excuse to wear a "protector" facing a batting practice pitcher. As he tires, his front arm elbow tends to lift and he swings under the ball, producing towering pop flies or topspin liners that stay in the park. When the apparatus is worn, its weight keeps his elbow down and he drives the ball with backspin.

5) Bonds enjoys quicker access to the inside pitch than average hitters because his "assistant" - counter-intuitively - allows him to turn more rapidly. Everyone understands that skaters accelerate their spins by pulling their arms into their torsos, closer to their axes of rotation. When Bonds is confronted with an inside pitch, he spins like a skater because his upper front arm is "assistant"-sealed tightly against the side of his chest.

6) At impact, Bonds has additional mass (the weight of his "assistant") not available to the average hitter. The combined weight of "assistant" and bat is probably equal to the weight of the lumber wielded by Babe Ruth but with more manageable weight distribution.

At the moment, Bonds' apparatus enjoys "grandfathered" status. Similar devices are presently denied to average
major leaguers, who must present evidence of injury before receiving an exemption.

Bonds has worn some sort of front arm protection since 1992. In '94, a one-piece forearm guard was replaced by a jointed, two piece elbow model. In ‘95 it got bigger and a small "cap" on the elbow was replaced by a "flap" that overlapped the upper piece and locked the two pieces together when the arm was elongated. In '96, the "apparatus" grew even larger and so did the "flap."

It seems to have remained relatively the same until -- interestingly— 2001, the year of his record 73 home runs, when an advanced model appeared made (apparently) of a new material. It had softer edges and a groove for the flap to slip into automatically at full arm elongation. More important, the upper half of the machine was sculpted to conform more comfortably to the contours of Bonds' upper arm. Since 2001, the apparatus seems to have remained relatively unchanged.

Several years back, baseball was rightfully scandalized by the revelation that Sammy Sosa had "corked" his bat. The advantages conferred by the Bonds "hitting machine," however, far exceed anything supplied by cork. Ultimately, it appears the Bonds "achievement” must be regarded as partly the product of “double duplicity" -- steroidal and mechanical.

Michael Witte (gmitchell@editorandpublisher.com) is a well-known illustrator whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Time, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal and dozens of other publications. The New Yorker recently wrote a piece about him and his study of mechanics. He appeared on network TV coverage of the 2003 World Series, providing cartoon sketches of some of the action.

If not for that "machine", would he be the same hitter? the closest thing i've seen to this was when jeff bagwell had this specially made batting glove that had a pad on it to protect his hand.

for some odd reason, he'd been hit in the EXACT same spot on the back of his hand numerous times in his career. I don't think any player in baseball would object to something like that, the man had to compete as well as put food on his families table.

but then he softened up.

(?)

When Reporters Act Like Actresses
Barry, Bud and 755

By D.K. WILSON

excerpt:

"Hammerin' Hank was that guy who referred to himself in 3rd person as
much as Rickey Henderson, the guy known as surly to the press to the
point where he sometimes cursed them, the guy who admitted he
sometimes took amphetamines before they were outlawed in clubhouses
but after they were illegal without a prescription.

"Hammerin' Hank was the guy who, when he received all that hate mail,
realized he was breaking a record that would allow him to live forever
as the guy who withstood all manners of racial epithets to break the
most hallowed record in all of baseball and at the time, in all of
sports.

"He knew he was famous forever, so he suddenly softened his stance,
reworked his image, and became - lovable."

I was viewing ESPN's live coverage, the one pitch I saw he hit it.

I'm glad he got his proper due and got his standing ovation in San Francisco.
