Really?

Being financially set is a very nice thing, but I don't think it carries with it the wholesale fulfillment-with-life feeling that you seem to think it does.

At any rate, I know plenty of rich miserable families from where I grew up that can say different.

I dunno, I just think not working gets old after 2 or 3 months, once you've gotten accustomed to actually having a job.

I dunno though, for someone with such a well-defined sense of gender roles, being a stay-at-home dad might be a little emasculating.

And I think I'd still like to work part-time at least, if it was me, just being a hobbyist feels more like something you do when you're 65 and up.

If you are truly financially set, you have chances to travel and explore so many areas that 99% of cats dont have the opportunity to see, you can live relatively stress free, and most importantly for me, I can go to every laker home game, dodger home game, and every eagles game....but it completely depends on the individual. If I had the opportunity to enjoy my true passions, w/o having to work to pay for them, there's no way I dont take that opportunity.

And as for Timmy? Not sure what's on his daily agenda, but some other cat broke it down financially...where was he before dropping this news? Who knows, but I'm sure he'll go back to wherever he was, doing whatever he was doing, and life comfortably.

We were talking about how ignorant he must be to come out with this, but maybe not. Maybe be felt he had nothing to lose.

Tim Hardaway: 'I Hate Gay People'
(CBS4) MIAMI Former Miami Heat superstar Tim Hardaway told a local sports radio show that he “hates gay people.”

Hardaway made the comments while he was being interviewed by Dan Le Batard on 790 the Ticket Wednesday afternoon.

The five time All Star was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate.

“First of all I wouldn’t want him on my team,” said Hardaway. “ “Second of all, if he was on my team I would really distance myself from him because I don’t think that’s right and I don’t think he should be in the locker room when we’re in the locker room.”

Le Batard took Hardaway to task, pointing out that his comments were “flatly homophobic” and bigoted, but that only seemed to stir up the former point guard.

“Well, you know, I hate gay people,” Hardaway said in response to Le Batard. “I let it be known I don’t like gay people. I don’t like to be around gay people. I’m homophobic. It shouldn’t be in the world, in the United States, I don’t like it.”

Hardaway’s comments come on the heels of a groundbreaking revelation made by former player John Amaechi, who became the first professional basketball player to openly identify himself as gay.

Amaechi became only the sixth male atlhlete from one of the four major American sports (NBA,MLB,NFL,NHL) to admit he is gay.

Former NFL running back David Kopay , offensive lineman Roy Simmons and defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo just recently came out.

Glenn Burke, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics in the 1970s, and Billy Bean, a utility player in the 1980s and 1990s, have also come out.

No player has ever publicly admitted to being gay while currently playing for one of the four major American sports.

I left work around 6:30, turned on LeBatard's show around that time, and the guy was really glad that it happened on his show.
You could hear him predictin how big this story is going to be. At the end of the show, he played the tape again.
Yeah, it's pretty much it for Tim in the public eye. I don't think he'll even show up to a Heat game this year.

A very wise & rich man once told me, all you really need to be set for the rest of your life is $4M in the bank and live a very comfortable lifestyle.

Now I'm sure Tim's need are much higher, but I think he's got at least $10 -$15 in the bank. Figure w/ that income a post fee/post tax interest earned on wealth of 4%, that's 400K POST tax a year. If you can't make that work, you deserve to die broke.

aren't pulled out of the air- they come from somewhere. In either case- I don't care. As long as his political views don't effect how he plays or how others play with/against him I don't care.

His thoughts on ANY matter are of no concern to me. The only way they COULD be of any concern is if he was using his platform to organize some sort of movement I was either aligned with or opposed to.

Still...it would be up to ME to react to that appropriately and it still wouldn't matter what he has to say.

I fail to see in this country and elsewhere how we can ever hope to have an open, honest and complete dialoge on any matter of weight if people have to censor themselves or hold back their true feelings.

Get it all out there is what I say.

You can't have discourse about an issue if one side is afriad or kept from speaking.

But how much of that can be really infered by words. People lie you know. People say stuff on camera just to not piss anyone off. Someone could be pubicly mouth the don't agree with stuff, but privately believe and think the hate it ideals.

Being a black man I'm more offended by someone who hides how they really feel. Publicly saying one thing, and privately harboring some dark shit.

I merely pointed out that I believe your free speech, hateful as it may be, is just as protected as the hateful free speech of a racist or Nazi.

And in my opinion, believing that gay people don't deserve the right to marry is hateful.

You're free to think what they're doing is wrong, but it shouldn't be okay to deprive them of equal rights.

And the whole "marriage is for a man and a woman" is a religious argument. It has no place in a country that supposedly separates church and state. (though Bush and his cronies are working hard to fuck that up)

Marriage in this country is a social and economic institution. It affects your taxes, your will, your rights in a hospital (visitation, to make decisions for someone incapacitated), etc.

None of these things should be denied to someone who's gay.

Incest opens the door for coercive, abusive relationships.

Banning incest prevents someone from having sex with a small subset of people that they are connected to - biologically, socially, and emotionally.

Banning homosexuality prevents someone from having sex with an entire gender.


There is absolutely no reasonable way to equate the two.

Incest is totally different because I don't believe there's a way to have a "healthy" incestuous relationship. When you're talking about having sex with your own family members, it's too difficult to rule out coercion or abuse.

Homosexuality does not involve coercion or abuse, any more so than heterosexuality.
Neither sexuality is correlated with incest. That was my point.

Yes, there are psychological effects of homosexuality. Not to generalize, but I'd say that most gay people (in the US at least) have much more difficult lives than heterosexuals. They face oppression, hatred, ignorance, and unacceptance.

These things, IMO, are the primary causes of the "psychological effects" of homosexuality. If society was more open and accepting of homosexuals, I think they would lead happier lives. In my opinion, being gay is not inherently psychologically damaging; it is being gay in a society that doesn't accept it that can be damaging.

We just don't know. Why assume the worst? There are already plenty of gay parents out there - some of them are living a lie and pretending to be straight (and already have kids). Are they not fit to be parents either?

Are we going to decide who's allowed to be a parent now? Because there's a long list of people that I don't think are fit to be parents, but I still don't think anyone should deny them that right.

Being ridiculed at school is a social effect based on the fact that homosexuality is not accepted. It has nothing to do intrinsically with having gay parents.

In some parts of the country, black kids are still ridiculed at school (ever seen Everybody Hates Chris?). Poor kids are ridiculed at school. People are ridiculed at school for their religious beliefs, or their parents' religiouis beliefs. Bottom line, kids are ridiculed at school for lots of stupid reasons.

That's no reason to ban marriages or prevent certain people from adopting kids.

Again, this is a social ramification of homosexuality's lack of acceptance. It is not related to actually being homosexual - it's related to how people respond to it.

My brother is very anti-gay - if one of his kids was gay, it would destroy him. And it would "harm the family."

But I wouldn't blame my nephew though. If anything, I'd blame my brother for not being loving and understanding of his own son.

I would still love my nephew just as much if he was gay, although it's not a life I would want for him because of all the reasons you mentioned.

In those unusual circumstances, and if all incest fell into that category, then I don't think incest should be a crime. It's still seems wrong to me, don't get me wrong, but they shouldn't be put in jail for it. Who are they hurting? Things are crimes because they're harmful.

They aren't doing something that needs to be a crime as far as the government should be concerned.


But, incest has to always remain illegal in order to prevent the coercion and abuse that I described.

I'd rather prohibit all incest rathan than allow incest "only if you didn't grow up together and didn't know each other." Because you can't put something like that into law.


And it's really not restrictive to ask people not to fuck their family. That's a small group of specific people.
But it is restrictive to ask people not to fuck anyone of a particular gender.

Rather than making all incest legal, it's better to make all incest illegal.


None of this applies to homosexuality. It doesn't open any doors to abuse like incest does.

{ And don't suggest that homosexuality opens the door for pedophilia - because sex with children is illegal and wrong regardless of anyone's gender. }


But answer me this honestly - Do you really believe the only reason most people are against incest is because it leads to retarded kids?

yes it has, but i wouldn't say it's ripped apart families with 2 gay parents. i mean because homosexuality wasn't accepted in the past there have been people leading double lives, raising families pretending to be straight people and then coming out later in life, and THAT screws up a family (i don't blame family members for being angry with them either). if we were to change the thinking so that there isn't a stigma to it, and so that gay couples can get all the benefits of straight couples (whether we allow marriage or not) we won't have that problem nearly as much. When we repress these things that's when the bad things happen.

Take for instance, the priest scandal from a few years back. These priests grew up in very conservative, Irish Catholic families who weren't accepting of gayness. So instead of coming out and being disowned and kicked out, they became priests rather than trying to live as a straight man when they weren't one. Now I'm not saying what they did was acceptable, but because homosexuality wasn't accepted when they were growing up, they had repressed feelings from their adolescence re-hashed at an older age which led to one of the most horrendous displays of abuse of authority in recent American memory. Obviously these men did awful things, but had society and those families been more accepting of gays, none of that would have ever happened.

and to go along with your incest argument, besides questions of morality, there are serious effects on the genetic pool if we allowed incest. now i know you were talking about gay incest, but if you allowed gay incest you'd have to allow straight incest.

Also interesting. If I had known you were cool with civil unions, that would have been different. I don't care if people are hung up on the word "marriage." If it has religious connotations for you, that's whatever.

I'd be happy if the government allowed gay people to have civil unions and receive the same rights as married people. I don't care about semantics.

Some people who are hung up on marriage as a religious thing might say that I'm not technically "married" since I didn't have a Christian service in a church. But the government considers us married, and so do we.

The thing is, some churches already marry gay people. It's the government that DOESN'T recognize it. The government is NOT okay with civil unions. That's my problem.

Those things are still oppression. What if black people couldn't drive? Or have jobs, or own land? Oppression is wrong, even if there's no beatings involved.

I know three couples getting married in the next year at non-religious ceremonies. Does that make their union any less of a marriage than a couple who are married with a religious ceremony?

There are rights afforded to married couples in this country, whether they are religious or not. And the divorce rate in this country is well over 50% at this point with opposite sex couples, both religious and non-religious. Allowing same sex couples to marry and affording them the same rights available to other couples would be upholding the constitution. You know that documnent that says:

"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

I really don't care if it's called a marriage or union as long as the partners are given the same privileges and same protection under the law as other unioned/married partners. In other words, same sex couples should have the same privileges and rights as opposite sex couples.

Not necessarily. He might disown the guy, shit happens quite a bit, even parents disowning the kids. You have quite an idealist worldview if you think people just need more information and then they'll magically change their values.

Hardaway hates that two men have sex with each other. It has nothing to do with their personality. He is not ignorant. He just feels how he feels.

I completely disagree. I believe that certain things are simply wrong.

Genocide. Slavery. Murder. Rape. Unprovoked assault.

These things are wrong. There is no context that makes rape okay. There is no context that makes murder okay (and I said in another post, self-defense is not murder and neither is war - those are examples of killing, but not murder).

I'd also include oppression in there. Depriving groups of people equal rights based on their race, gender, sexuality, etc is wrong.

I don't think it's cultural. I think those things are wrong. This is why there is such a thing as a "human rights violation." We respect other cultures, but it only goes so far.

I agree with this as far as speech and discourse goes - I've never been against restricting anyone's speech.

My point, and the reason I keep responding, is that I feel like I have a responsibility to try to counter hateful/bigoted opinions by bringing in my own perspectives and beliefs.

I'm not trying to convince YOU specifically, or start a beef. I'm expressing my views as a contrast to yours, for the benefit of OTHER people who are reading this thread. If I managed to convince you, that would be great, but it's not my primary purpose here.


And I know you want to drop it, but honestly, I'm a bit confused how you can believe there is no universal morality, and that nothing is right or wrong except as culturally defined.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, I just want you to answer 3 things:

1 - Was Nazi Germany immoral?

2 - Was slavery in colonial America immoral?

3 - If you lived in a culture where murder and rape were legal and cool, would you be doing them?


You can answer this post in three yes or no responses if you're done with me and want to agree to disagree. I'm just trying to understand this.


Personally, I believe Nazi Germany and slavery were both immoral regardless of how culturally accepted they were at the time.

So you're saying, different cultures have different values, and there's no point in telling them that it's immoral because it's not immoral to them.

My point is, that doesn't matter. If something is unequivocally wrong, we shouldn't ignore it and we shouldn't respect it.

You should speak up or stand up and address it. And if it's severe enough (genocide, slavery), you should step in and do something.

If I see a man getting beaten to death, or a woman getting raped, I'm not going to keep walking and say to myself, "The guy doing that has different morals than me. I respect that."

No, I'm going to do something about it.


In the case of slavery, there were abolitionists, and there was a civil war. If everyone had your attitude, maybe the North would have just said, "Fuck it, those Southerners just have different values. Let's let them be."

And with your attitude, maybe the US never gets into WW II and Hitler wins.

Yeah, it would be great to understand why people hate gay people. I'm trying to understand it right here in this post. But no one here has really given me any reasons that seem reasonable to me:

There's no way to know that. Maybe I'm being conceited and/or naive, but I honestly believe there's a good chance that somewhere out there, someone has read some or all of the numerous posts and points I've made. And there may have been something they hadn't thought about before.

Some people are anti-gay without really thinking about why. It's those people I hope to reach.

If you're anti-gay, and you have your sincerely heartfelt reasons for hating them, and you're 100% never going to change, then fine, I won't change you.

i KNOW you been to middle schools. i KNOW you watch the news. the homophobia in our society isn't something private...it infests public spaces and refuses to fall back. and THAT SHIT is the kind of thing we can't tolerate for a pluralistic society to work. it ain't all kumbaya up in here (c) new york's mom, okay, and it won't ever be, but these divisions and ignorances like segregation...we have to be able to seperate those out from the valuable things that come from differences from hood to hood and community and community.

and i mean, come on, i'm not being subtle here...my main issue here is that you're throwing out the language of pluralism and segregations and all that without challenging yourself AT ALL on how that relates to the issue at hand. the reason most people HATE people with different takes on gender and sexuality is a MORAL JUDGEMENT that has NO business in public spaces. HOW this is even debatable when people keep flapping their mouths about flag burning is just ridiculous to me.

Arguing anything based on religion is pretty pointless. There is no "right" religion so it's a waste of time. Virtually anything can be argued using religion as an excuse.

If your religion says being gay is wrong, that's whatever as far as I'm concerned. Believe what you want, I've said that all along.

But I don't think gay people should suffer politically or economically because of your religion. That's messed up if you ask me.

There are gay congresspersons, gay actors, gay scientists, gay journalists, gay WNBA players, gay musicians, gay Olympians, gay golfers, gay baseball players, gay wrestlers, gay doctors, gay everything. On the checklist of gay coming outs, Amaechi's admission isn't anywhere near the lede graph.
The news isn't that Amaechi is gay and wrote a book about it. The news isn't that Tim Hardaway is a self-confessed homophobic and told a radio sports talk-show host about it. The news is that it won't be news a week from now. And that's a good thing.

This is all playing out so predictably. Former NBA center declares he's gay. Past and present NBA players declare indifference. One former NBA player, in this case, Hardaway, declares his outrage and hatred. Hey, just like real life.

It's so easy to take a swing at the human pinata, Hardaway, right now. After all, the words spilled out of his mouth with such ease and with such arrogance.

"Well, you know, I hate gay people," he told Dan Le Batard, a Miami Herald columnist and local talk show host, on Le Batard's radio show. "I let it be known I don't like gay people. I don't like to be around gay people. I'm homophobic."

Never mind that Hardaway played at the same university and for the same coach who, years earlier, helped destroy racial stereotypes by starting five African-American players against all-white Kentucky in the 1966 NCAA Final Four championship game. But the lessons of tolerance taught by Don Haskins at Texas-El Paso somehow were forgotten by Hardaway. Or maybe they were never remembered in the first place.

Hardaway's comments will be reviled and praised. Gay rights advocates will issue angry, impassioned statements condemning the remarks. Gay bashers will rejoice. And then all the noise will dissolve and we'll watch the NBA All-Star Game this Sunday.

This isn't meant to dismiss what Hardaway said. It was a vile, reprehensible display of ignorance, but it isn't anything new. Hardaway simply gave his prejudice a name and a face for a news cycle or two. His bigotry, as well as his apology, will be forgotten, as it should be.

Hardaway is a single, blunt, clumsy voice. His opinion is shared by others, but the good news here -- the only news here -- is that there are enough other voices to counter the homophobic screed.

NBA commissioner David Stern immediately rendered Hardaway persona non baller by banning him from any league-related appearances. But the more appropriate action might have been to let Hardaway make those appearances and deal with the backlash in person. Or better yet, have him attempt to articulate the reasons for his hatred. I mean, if we're going to have a dialogue, then let's have a dialogue.

Instead, we got this from Hardaway: "I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that."

Can't you just feel the sincerity?

There always will be intractable people such as Hardaway -- and Amaechi no doubt has the letters to prove it. But it's easier to pay less attention to Hardaway's nonsense because, in the end, his hatred doesn't matter. And one of these days, neither will Amaechi's homosexuality.

I don't care that a gay center played in the NBA. Then again, I don't care if my car mechanic, dentist or mailman is gay. And I definitely don't care what a little lint-speck of a person, Tim Hardaway, thinks about them.

This is no longer about alternative lifestyles, or whatever the hell euphemism nervous people use to describe gays. It's about the relationship between the micro world of sports and the macro world of society.

I'm not naïve enough to believe homosexuality in sports isn't an issue, but it no longer is the issue. Those days are gone. That's why Amaechi is no pioneer and Hardaway is barely a footnote.

Progress is being made. Maybe not as fast as Amaechi would like, or as slow as Hardaway would prefer, but we're approaching a moment when being a gay athlete in a predominantly straight world simply doesn't matter.

Yesterday it was Martina Navratilova. Today it is Amaechi. Tomorrow it will be someone else. Guess what? They had me at hello.

I don't need any more heartfelt disclosures from the Amaechis of the world. Been there, read that. That's because we live in different, more enlightened times now. Perfect? No. Better? Yes.

It's not my fault Hardaway didn't get the memo.

I might prefer it to be a straight man, just to make everyone a bit more comfortable, but I really wouldn't care that much.

If your doctor is going to molest you or do something inappropriate, he shouldn't be a doctor, regardless of anyone's gender or sexual orientation.

I know for a fact that at least three attendings on my service are gay. They're not open about it, it's just known. And they're all damn good doctors.

Out of my class of 200, I know for a fact that at least 7 are gay. There are probably an equal number in the closet for one reason or another.

As for not wanting a gay doctor, I think that's your right. While I was on my OB/GYN rotation, there were plenty of women who said "i'd like to not be seen by a male doc". Those people were told to go elsewhere (half the attendings, residents, and students were male), but I think that's an acceptable position for whatever your reason. If you're male and don't want a gay-male doc I think that's fine. Whatever makes it acceptable for you to get medical care. But if you're going to refuse to see a particular doc, be prepared to be refused medical care by that group/hospital.

Medicine, like any profession in this country, is a microcosm of the country. You have people of every race and nationality, gay and straight, liberal and conservative. But usually personal views never enter into medical decision making. You treat all patients the same. I don't think it's too much, to ask the same from the patients.

In any case, it's more acceptable to be anti-abortion than anti-gay in medicine.

And I know ^^you^^ aren't anti, I'm just making the point for people who are.

MIAMI (AFP) - Tim Hardaway, who spent 13 seasons in the NBA, was removed from league-related appearances, one day after an anti-gay tirade on a local radio program.

Hardaway responded to a question on WAXY about former NBA player John Amaechi and the Englishman's admission of homosexuality with a hard-line stance against gay players in the NBA.

"I hate gay people," Hardaway said. "I let it be known I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States sports."

A statement from NBA commissioner David Stern to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said Hardaway has been removed from league-related appearances connected with Sunday's NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

"It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said.

Hardaway, who played for the Miami Heat from 1996-2001 before ending his career in 2003 with Indiana, was part of an NBA community program in Las Vegas.

Amaechi, whose book on his closeted life in the NBA was published Wednesday, would not have been someone Hardaway wanted as a teammate.

"First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that's right," Hardaway said.

"You know I don't think he should be in the locker room while we're in the locker room. I wouldn't even be a part of that. There's a lot of other people I hear who are like that and still in the closet. I don't like that."

Amaechi has said there are other gay players in the NBA currently so it is entirely possible Hardaway has had homosexual teammates and not even known it.

Hardaway, who told a Miami television station he would not speak to a gay family member, apologized for his comments in a statement.

"I want to apologize for my comments yesterday regarding gays," Hardaway's statement said. "My comments were offensive and I regret making them. I'm sorry to anyone I have offended."

Beyond mere issues of locker room trust and bonds among teammates, Amaechi said Hardaway's words of anger and intimidation show why gay people worry about making their sexual orientation public.

"It now allows people to take off those rose-colored glasses and understand that homophobia is a problem not only in sports but society," Amaechi told sports TV network ESPN, publishers of his book.

"Spewing vitriol isn't something we should give credit to (for sparking discussion). Society is not for that. One man has made hundreds of thousands of people now feel uncomfortable, unsafe, feel they should hide and run.

"What he has done has made life more difficult, perhaps more dangerous, for people in society, not just in sports. His views embolden those who hold the same views.

"When he depersonalizes it, it's not just a foolish comment. It's a foolish comment that echoes around the country.

"People will feel under pressure, like they are under attack. They will feel anxious. They will know there's a face and a voice for all those people out there who hate them.

"I don't know how that can be conducive to any kind of society at all."

Amaechi, who is black, rejects the idea of mere tolerance for gays, saying "I have no interest in being tolerated" as a black or gay person.

Amaechi said that while response to his revelation has been overwhelmingly positive, Hardaway's comments touched of a wave of threatening anti-gay messages beyond what he had been receiving.

"Every comment that (Hardaway) made is labeled with hate," Amaechi said. "The percentage of e-mails I've received overnight that are going to have to go into a little box somewhere just in case I end up dead are unbelievable.

"He has been a lightning rod for people to finally open the floodgates and decide that they can say some pretty awful stuff."

Hardaway, a five-time NBA All-Star who averaged 17.7 points and 8.2 assists a game in his career, drew Amaechi's ire for his hateful message.

"These are the comments that create the atmosphere that allow some of the tragic incidents of homophobia that we've seen," Amaechi said.

"This is what makes the lives of gay and lesbian young people in schools miserable. It's what stops gay and lesbian people in the workplace from coming out as well as the fact they can be fined in 33 states for being gay."

Shit, I dislike about 99% of the gay people I've met in my life. That doesn't mean I go around publicly telling people I don't like them, telling people that their lifestyle is wrong, that it doesn't belong anywhere in the world, etc. And I certainly don't advocate for taking away their rights.

I simply avoid them or show a mild disinterest in them if I have to be around them. Why can't everyone do that? Why do you have to make it known to each and every person that you hate gays?

And I don't want to hear this bullshit about them hitting on you or forcing their gayness on you. Ya'll anti-gay advocates act like gay people have no self control and hit on every person they see whenever they feel like. FOH, it's no different than when a heterosexual person has to display restraint in many situations when they are attracted to someone.
