Sixers, Nuggets reach agreement for Iverson

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Marc Stein and Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

The Denver Nuggets have reached an agreement in principle with the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire Allen Iverson, according to NBA front-office sources.

Iverson
The trade, pending league approval, some two weeks after Iverson demanded a trade in Philly, would send Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 first-round picks to the Sixers for Iverson and perhaps another minimum-salaried player or two. It was expected to be completed later Tuesday barring any snags.

The Sixers had been hoping to take back only expiring contracts in any Iverson deal, unless they were receiving a top-flight young player like Minnesota's Randy Foye or Shaun Livingston of the Los Angeles Clippers.

But with Philly and Denver struggling to find a third team to join in to make the deal more financially enticing for the Sixers, they decided to end an auction that began in earnest when Iverson's demand to be traded was confirmed by Sixers chairman Ed Snider on Dec. 8.

Miller

Smith

This deal will bring Philly a former league assist leader in Miller, Smith's expiring salary of nearly $7 million and those two first-round picks in June -- projected to be in the 20s -- to go with their own lottery pick. Miller is averaging 13 points and 9.1 assists per game -- third-best in the NBA -- while Smith, an 11-year veteran, has played little this season, averaging only 13.5 minutes and 5.1 points per game.

The Nuggets' interest in Iverson dates to last February and has only increased since the Sixers made him available to the whole league earlier this month. Their chief motivation is pairing Iverson with Anthony in coach George Karl's up-tempo attack, but acquiring Iverson now -- just a day after Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for 15 and 10 games, respectively, for their roles in Saturday night's fight with the New York Knicks -- gives a much-needed jolt to Denver's depleted roster.

The former teammates from the 2004 U.S. Olympic squad won't be able to play together until Anthony is reinstated for a Jan. 20 game at Houston.

Miller, who led the NBA in assists with 10.9 per game for Cleveland in 2001-02, makes $8.7 million this season and has $19.2 million left on his contract over the following two seasons.

It's apparent, though, that the Sixers decided it was better to absorb Miller's contract now -- along with the opportunity to have three first-round selections in what scouts are calling the deepest draft in years -- as opposed to dragging out the Iverson saga further.

Iverson has been in exile for the past 11 days, languishing on the Sixers' inactive list while still accruing his per-game earnings of $156,218.

Iverson, 31, is averaging 31.2 points per game -- second only to Carmelo Anthony's 31.6 ppg -- in 15 games this season. He has a career 28.1 ppg scoring average in 11 NBA seasons, all in Philadelphia. He led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games, but the team has seen little playoff success since.

He was Rookie of the year in 1997 and MVP in 2001. He has led the NBA in scoring four times, most recently in 2005, finishing in the league's top three every year since 1999, and twice led the league in steals.

2 top scorers in the league? A month basically to practice together before they see any court time.

Not to mention they put up 117 points without Melo last night.

Its about 6.8 million off the books, but I still thought that Philly would really try to get a young, up-coming cat like a JR Smith along with some cap relief(Andre) and some picks.

In response to Reply # 10

We'll never know if interest peaked or not but I bet that is what happened. Probably a number of teams couldnt come up with a suitable deal, Denver became the frontrunner in the west and got leverage.

They have been trying to move Miller for a little while and I think they are very happy with Smith (stupid ass Skiles, WTF?) so it doesnt surprise me that they used that leverage to make it one expiring deal and Miller rather than Smith, an expiring deal from another team, Smith and maybe one draft pick at most.

I dont know where the picks came from (I suspect their own and New Jersey's????) but they don't sound so great, probably mid-firsts. That's OK though, two shots at a decent player plus I think we have our own pick this year.

I am not ecstatic but I'm not dissatisfied or surprised either.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I'd like more expiring contracts but hey, we got a real point guard to pass the ball to all the rookies we'll be getting in this supposedly deep draft.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be checkin out Louis Williams and Rodney Carney. Greg Oden sweepstakes FULL STEAM AHEAD!!!

The whole organization fucked up in the way they handled the situation.

Honestly they (BK included) forced themselves into a corner where they had no leverage.

Out of all the deals offered at least we get two picks and an expiring deal. It would have been nice if Andre Miller was like 25 instead of 30.

But considering the circumstances of the Sixers' dumbfuckery in sending AI home THEN trying to trade him, it's an ok deal.

In fact, I'm suprised we got this much at this point

well, it's worse than any of the other projected deals we heard about because the sixers received no established young talent back in return. and it's worse than any of the deals they could have made this summer. actually, it's far worse than the barkley deal.

the sixers got themselves into this situation through stupidity and exited with an equivalent amount. they traded the most popular player in the history of the franchise and a certain hall of famer for a mediocre point guard and two non-lottery picks. so fuck billy king's life.

..i think its safe to say that a fair trade (player for player) is damn-near impossible when considerin' iverson (at this point)

he's already veto'd the griz

he's not about to start his career over wit' a franchise who can't compete for a championship NOW

yet, no team in their right mind is gonna wager their future against an agin' vet (shaq exemption)

philly dumps a huge contract, gets an experienced vet in miller, and can finally move fwd and look to rebuild its franchise

considerin' all this, its not a bad move for denver, and it might be the ONLY move for philly...

Good luck to AI

2 First Rounders this year: Excellent

Location of the picks: bad

Deepness of the draft: should be good

Joe Smith's contract: some relief, but wish it was more $$$

Andre Miller: maybe we can trade him at the deadline for a young and
and an expiring. If not he's got 3 years left on his deal and is a solid point guard-- especially to pair with Iggy.

In response to Reply # 0

So they're getting two picks in the 20's in next years draft, on a team that won't be ready for several years....

Wow....What a joke.

You can't tell me you wouldn't rather have Foye, Mike James and Ricky Davis??? Why get that money off the cap right now if you aren't going to spend it? Get more money off the cap later so you can make an actual run at someone.

Basically, those two draft picks aren't going to mean anything. If YOU ARE going to do that, why get shitty picks this year?

(and before someone pulls a Chad Ford and talks about how deep this draft is, name the players they will get in this draft, and how that will benefit the 76ers in 5 years when they might be able to reposition themselves.)

Kenyon's health ain't guaranteed, this is his 2nd microfracture surgery(one on each knee). They better off hoping Nene will be fully healthy by next season because he appears to be still suffering from the effects of his knee surgery.

KG has one season on his contract after this year.

He is NOT resigning with Minny...so why fuck him over like that?

Send his ass to Chicago or Boston.

That way he can get some decent assets in return (youth, cap room, draft picks) and KG can get paired with a playoff team in need of inside scoring (KG, Big Ben, Deng, Duhon, Hiney) or a prolific scoring allstar 2 guard and help turn that team into contenders.

I think Pau Gasol, Paul Pierce, and KG should be traded before the deadline UNLESS they one of these players is traded to a team that one of the others is on (Pau or KG to Boston or PP to Minny or Memph, etc.)

Seems like the deal gets Philly what they needed. They didn't appear to want equal value as much as they wanted leverage to begin rebuilding.

given that everyone knew AI wanted to be traded & AIs scoring average? It's almost like Shaq wanting to leave LA. How you gonna get equal value for that?

This ain't a move to try and win this year
and Joe Smith aint shit but a contract to expire

This is not the equivalent of the Barkley trade by any means

Sixers needed 1st round picks, expiring contracts and young talent

They got 1st round picks (yeah late 1sts)
Joe Smith's 6.8 million
Dre Miller who isn't young but having a veteran PG with young wings like Carney and Iggy ain't the worst thing in the world.

Not a great deal
but for what was out there its solid

and at least the Sixers have admitted it's time to focus on young players instead of winning now

no matter how you look at it. You have the leading scorer (or second) in the NBA, and you get an overweight point guard and a guy that cannot develop, no matter where he plays? Both whom are injury prone. But you know what, considering how Philly has treated the whole situation, I guess they know they aren't getting shit for AI right now.

Miller has just finished a string of three straight seasons of playing and starting in 82 games. 5 times out of seven seasons he has done this. How does that equate to injury prone?

Who cares if Joe Smith develops at this point? Philly just wants the contract.

maybe I was mistaken and he just has a weight problem. Either way the deal was stupid. They pretty much got next to nothing for AI, which is a mistake. Either way, Billy King still fucked up, whether Andre Miller is injury prone or not. Oh shit, you know who I was thinking of, Jamal Tinsley, but that's another story.

they didn't get devin harris, livingston, beidrens, al jefferson or even jr smith. they didn't get tons of salary cap relief -- they got 7 million. the two draft picks aren't even good, and they got an overpaid point guard one year younger than the guy they traded. it's an unbelievably bad trade by any standards, even if you give billy king brownie points for getting them out of the ditch he drove the bus into.

Iverson didnt have a no trade clause, but he basically did
what team would trade for him if he would never report and pull a Zo?

Then what team would trade young talent (biedrins, al jefferson) for AI when theyre not close to winning a title

Devin Harris sucks, and I'd rather have Andre Miller for 3 years.

JR Smith looks like he can play and if Denver offered him instead of one of the picks then I don't know which I'd want.

Salary cap relief is pointless until Webber's contract expires.
Which is after next season.
Andre Miller has 1 more year after Webber, but he's not unmovable.

The Clippers supposedly only offered Livingston with Maggette and Mobley.

so then you get 1 young player and other players that leave you no closer to a title.

it has to be a total rebuild.

right now you have

2 NBA starters in Andre Miller and Iggy (who might not be as good as we hoped)
2 overpaid stiffs in CWebb/Sam
1 solid role player in Korver
2 solid cheap veteran backups in Ollie and Henderson
1 cheap frontcourt player who we seem to undervalue in Hunter

Then you got the rest of the squad: S-Dot, Louis, Bobby Jones, Stephen Smith,

We'll have 1 lottery pick and 2 late first rounders
plus the Knicks' 2nd rounder

Maybe we dont get Oden
Maybe Oden doesn't come out

But the late first rounders allow us to possibly move up in the Lottery*

There's no talent on the team, it's going to take 5 years

*not that I have any faith in this managment to adequately draft.

well, other than taking on a contract like nene's. miller isn't young, isn't cheap and is the type of player who will help them win enough games this year to avoid getting the number one pick. it's this precise kind of stupidity that makes billy king so terrible. while trying to rebuild a team, he sabotages his own effort. and by all accounts, philly had been refusing to take on miller and his contract -- then, after the nuggets shoot themselves in the foot, he does. it's senseless. the only explanation is that king panicked after the heat and t-wolves excused themselves from the bargaining table.

you're approaching this from the perspective that iverson had to be traded. he didn't. this was all the management's doing -- not his. they made the alleged request public and they were the ones who cleaned out his locker. snider and king bear full responsibility for creating this mess and full responsibility for agreeing to a ludicrous deal with a team who should have been bargaining from a position of weakness.

where I'm looking at the trade from is

The organization (billy) fucked up and played its hand by sending AI home.

After that happened we HAD to trade Allen.

My first instincts was to wait as long as possible to have the worst possible record this year, and taking on Andre Miller scares me that we'll end up around #10 pick.

but after the screwed themselves over, this is an ok deal for the circumstances that they themselves created.

king and snider could have swallowed their pride and brought AI back. or they could have just let him sit there and wait for a better deal. the fact is, they had been refusing to take andre miller up until this trade was done. he's not included because philly wanted a slightly-above average and overpaid veteran point guard to help them eeke out a couple more wins with. he's in there because denver demanded they take him. that's right, the nuggets, a team with it's best player suspended for the next 15 games, managed to lean on king and got what they wanted. why? because he panicked.

the logic of "they had to do it because they couldn't get anything better" is a pathetic loser mentality (and perfect for billy king, by the way). if you can't get anything better, then you simply don't make the trade. it's not complicated.

i hope someone punches billy king in the face.

>they didn't get devin harris, livingston, beidrens, al

Only regret is that Miller is already 30 and none of these guys, and if/when the Sixers start to develop they'll need a new point guard. But what's wrong with having a floor leader with 9-10 assists a game to play with what will be a REALLY young team for at least a couple years? And by then, Miller's big contract along with Webber's will come off the books.

>they didn't get tons of salary cap relief -- they got 7 million.

Iverson's contract is like 18 mill a year. Miller's will be 9-10 for two more years.

>the two draft picks aren't even good,

Time will tell. If 1) this draft is as good as everyone says it will be and b) there's someone in the sixers front office to make the right pick, there have been more than a few picks in the 20s over the past few years who've made contributions to their team (josh howard, jameer, kevin martin, david west, etc). But we'll see I guess. Plus, they can trade up now, though I doubt teams will want to in this draft.

it took me a while to scroll down before I reached a logical post, but at least I found one. The Sixers would never get equal-value "talent-wise" as far as dealing AI is concerned, so what they got I for one am at least satisfied with it.

We now have a viable point guard, an expiring contract, and two first round picks. People holinig out for anything more than that would have been waiting a long, long time. The Wolves weren't trading Foye, the Warriors werent' trading M. Ellis, although I believe Iverson would have enacted his fake "I'm an ass hole" no trade clause, which really means if you trade me there, I will become even more of a problem.

As much as I cannot stand Iverson, I will never deny his talent as an individual, but that's as far as it goes. I still cannot see Iverson and Carmelo working well together. How do you spread those shots around? Is no one else on the team ever going to get a shot that doesnt occur when there's only 2 seconds left on the shot clock? I do like Carmelo and never minded the Nuggets (I used to like them when they had young Deke and Chris Mustafa or whatever he changed his name to, I can't remember at this time), but someone please explain to me how this will work.

despite his low price? He is one of the worst teammates ever. I believe I've seen you in some Philly sports posts, so I have to figure you watch the majority of the sixers games, which brings me to this question: why do you like Iverson so much?

For the amount of effort he brings to the offensive end of the floor, he brings the exact opposite amount of effort on the defensive end. I mean, there are two different dimensions while playing basketball, and to me, defense gets a bit of an edge over offense.

Also, I, for one, was sick of being the exact same team year in and year out, always stuck between the 6th and the 10th seed, and basically rendering EVERY season useless, which is what we were always going to be with Iverson here. Granted, he does score 30 pts per game, but that is also on 30 shots, and while alienating his teammates in the process. No one has ever said anything positive about playing with AI after they left here, and that's why no one will offer anything of substance for him; because no one wants him.

After you get buried in bad contracts and stuff like that it's time to rebuild. Iverson should have been dealt three years ago. That should be easy to see, especially now.

he, along with shaq, are the only players i've seen who are physically unguardable. he's played with one all-star, deke, and went to the finals. other than webber, whose numbers in philly were virtually the same as his career averages, the two teammates most often cited as players who he should have "made better" are stackhouse and van horn -- you know, the fourth and sixth scoring options on last year's dallas team. just from seeing the events of the last two weeks, do you think this looks like an organization with the ability to amass talent?

teams may not have wanted him, but guys like shaq, pierce and garnett all lobbied for their organizations to trade for him. who do you trust, the guys who worry about salary caps and public relations or the guys who would be playing on the court with him?

maybe it's because of his style of play or his polarizing personality, but he also gets held to a completely different standard than other guys. dudes like pierce, garnett, mcgrady, lebron and kobe-sans-shaq have never been to the finals, yet somehow iverson is the one who gets labeled as holding his team back.

but I still will be a sixer fan more than an AI fan. I want the sixers to succeed, and if I thought they could have done that while still having Iverson, than I could have been all for it. But the way the salary-cap is structured, and just how overally fucked-up the NBA is in general, that was never going to happen. We would have kept getting these piece-meal players in the same ilk of the ones you names, and we would have continued to finish in the same place year after year, getting marginal draft picks that we could only hope could complement Iverson. That does not cut it for me. I want this team to win, and that is why Iverson should have been traded three years ago. Think about it. Wouldn't you have rather started the rebuilding process back then, than suffer through the last three years that they have thrown together? I know I would have.

And I know you named Van Horn and Stackhouse, and I could never argue that they are great players or anyhthing, but what about someone like Iguodala? He has not improved at all since his rookie year (actually I think his defense has regressed), so when do we get to see if he can play? I know he doesn't seem to be that offensively aggressive, but I would at least like to give him a chance. How much worse could it be? He was always going to defer to Iverson, so lets see what he is made of. Can he be a 20 ppg scorer? At least that gives me something to look forward to, instead of already knowing what's going to happen.

As far as players knowing who they should be playing with more than coaches and GM's, just take a look at last year's T.O. fiasco with Donovan. Donovan pleaded for TO, Andy finally gave in, and the rest is history. In almost all cases, I definately trust GMs more than players as far as personnal is concerned. Honestly, you think the players know more than the GMs? Oh, and I ask that question while not including Billy King, because he is more or less the exception to that rule. His last few drafts have not been terrible though, but his trades and handling of contracts is abysmal.

Bittersweet 6er fan ... glad AI lands somewhere that has a chance to compete but d#mn BK is an awful GM.

Joe Smith?!? Joe 'I stopped progressing after game 2 of my rookie season' Smith? He still breathing?

Andre Miller has two more yrs before his contract expires, over $19M and he 30+ ???

Two draft picks in the 20's??? Knowing the BK Duke connection, it'll likely be two Duke bench players drafted.

It's insane, he has to go.

Best wishes Denver fans, you've got a killer in AI.

Miller along with J. Smith's expiring contract and the draft picks aren't bad at all considering what Philly is trying to accomplish - REBUILDING BY STACKING/STOCKING TALENT.

Denver made out lovely.

Iverson
JR/Patterson
Melo
Kenyon/Nene
Camby

They kept their core in tact. And a lot of people are sweating the fact that Ivo and Melo are 1 and 2 in scoring but don't be surprised if AI becomes a helluva point guard now. He has it in him...AND he can buss yo ass for 40 if they need it. This team will be dangerous in 2 months when they gel.

I wouldn't say finals this year, but 2nd round is a minimum. Maybe a finals shot next season.

--------
Philly didn't do so bad. Joe Smith comes off the books this summer so they have some $$ to go after a decent FA. And 3 picks in THIS upcoming draft could be gold in the long run. Philly could very well be a playoff team in 2 years. Not to mention Andre Miller is a good pg and he'll help develop Iggy's, Korver, Carney, and Dalembert's game.

So it ain't what the sixers COULD have gotten but they didn't get completely fucked either.

they could have made...

I can't help but think that AI not playing right now put the Sixers up against a wall, and thus teams could low ball them a bit...

Overall....now I figured if it were Denver....Miller would be included....but for that other player I was thinking either Nene, or JR Smith..

Joe Smith is a nice role player right now..and his money goes off the books next year.......with the 2 picks...I think the best thing for the Sixers is that now they can move on and build a more balanced team over the next 3 years....utilize the young talent they have now..and drafting well....maybe even getting a free agent here or there...

The Nuggets are going to be strong though....and I think this moves them into the top squad in the West in the long run...certainly top 3.

i dont think we'll ever know for sure what was on the table. miami was all talk and i doubt dallas was seriously interested despite my highest hopes that they were.

it's likely that there were some teams pitching three-ways with portland and new york but not giving up a combination of a young player (eg Smith, Harris, Livingston) AND draft picks. at some point King and Snider decided to cut their losses and take what is not such a shitty deal. finance was the chief concern here, they save half the money with Smith and then Miller can get moved in the last year of his deal when Webb expires, Iggy's deal is up (he'll be gone by then) and presumably Dalembert is moved for expiring salary, too.

so the cheapout angle did not go for naught, we get a guy who can help us some right now (poor Andre Miller! Back to the Cleveland days for him!) and two middle picks (is the other one from the Nets? The Martin deal?)

not thrilling, not terribly disappointing given the circumstances like you said.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Fuck, how ill-timed is this? I am an hour from leaving for a month-long trip overseas so I'll have to be brief.

KingKahn just made a bunch of new friends in Philly. I knew I was keeping that old Mutombo Nuggets jersey around for a reason. Which of their three unis is not too hideous to actually own? Maybe the navy one.

For openers, Denver is not ideal, but it could have wound up much worse for Iverson. Once Melo and them get back, I think they will start putting it together. It's interesting that AI will probably be the point guard for real for real with this team given that they dealt Miller and obviously Smith is picking up a bigger role all the time. This should roll Denver into the semis (Dios mio, man), but I won't go any further than that. I am not a big fan of George Karl (euphemism) and they were far from contention before, so anything beyond that I will consider a pleasant surprise.

From the Sixers' standpoint, well, we didn't get any hot young players but we did manage to get two first-rounders. I thought it was going to wind up being either two expiring deals, one player and a pick or two expiring deals and two picks. We wound up with one expiring deal, a player and a pick. Andre Miller is not exactly the future of the franchise, but he is a decent ballplayer with a contract that will be attractive on the trade market in two years when we'll be trying to actually get below the cap (when Webb's money comes loose).

It's pretty much what I expected, 50 cents on the dollar.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

hates playing with iverson

free agency comes and the sixers have a ton of cap room and some young players who have had a year or two in the league (including a big man)

melo comes over and we win a championship in 2010

yeah i know.. space oddysey but...

its like developmental league

korver, iggy, dalembert, green, smith...

if they stay with the 2 1st rounders in the 20s and ONE of them turns out to be a good to VERY good player...

and they get a strong player with the lottery pick..

THEN in two years they have MAD cap room and get the superstar there

of course i expect fairly high draft picks during those next two years too

not for nothing im much more optimistic about the sixers then i have been in about two years

It's going be different seeing AI in a different uni. He's become an adopted son of this city. Warts and all. He was us. All of it. I was in attendance for two of those toronto games in '01. Shit was amazing! Saw him drop 40 numerous times. Sad to see him leave. It always ends badly. He will be missed.

Having said that. It's been pass time for this to happen. Should've happened the year after LB left. His value was at it's peak. It's been decreasing since. Not his production, his trade value. He will produce at a high level for at least another 2 years. Problem is he's getting older and more frustrated with the losing. His game doesn't mesh with too many players.

I'm ok with the trade. A player who doesn't play the same position as the other good players on your team, a salary dump, and two #1 picks. They're not lottery picks, but did you really think someone was going to give us that for him. Seriously. This ain't NBA 2K7 folks. People get fired for this stuff for real.

Fire billy king, start the rebuilding process. It's been time.

Marcus Camby is a great, great basketball player, and has been for years.

He's a competent scorer, and is excellent at everything else--especially the stuff that doesn't show up in box scores. AND his stats are great.

him being unable to find his shot and dumping the ball off to someone like Korver with 3seconds left on the shot clock.
you want a pg that makes plays and get his teammmates involved. a pg that knows how to get the ball to his teammates whee they can make a play. example: Jason Kidd
a good pg makes his teammates better

If anything, it shows the support of Iverson, personally. If he was a$$ about practice and could not be a key link or be too much of a pain, LB would've told his boy Karl to 'stay away.'

AI will be fine in Denver. He'll run the point like Nash in Phoenix. When the Nuggets and Suns play, look for a 201-200 regulation game!

146. "BAD TIMING"
In response to Reply # 0

This is the worst thing that can happen for Melo, AI and Nuggets, in terms of timing. AI basically goes to this team as the lone superstar (for 14 games at least), the same setting as Philly, Denver will rely on AI's scoring, heavy touches, and dominating the ball. To AI, this will be nothing new, he has been doing this for 11 seasons with Philly. The only difference is he has an above average center and powerforward and decent bench players.

When Melo comes back there will be issues. We can equate an equation from AI and Melo's past there will be trouble. They both have been the go-to scorers, men who took the last shot for their teams, and relied on a lot of plays run for them. Melo believed this was his team, as it was for the past 3 seasons. AI comes in, starts to embrace the role of the leader, the scorer for all 14 games now. There will be an identity crisis and a chemistry crisis.

If Melo doesn't get suspended, this wouldn't be an issue, however due to his punch, the whole dynamics change.

I hope he gets a chip out there.

I think he might need the secret service to protect him

All in all, it's not a completely bad deal. Picks are picks, and I don't think this draft class will be that bad at all. The problem is that you basically force out your leading scorer, thinking you have the upper hand and you basically don't.

For Denver, it looks good on paper. Who knows how well they'll play together (AI and Melo)...they'll either be very good, or not much better. AI's gotta adjust his style of play for this team to be successful

King fucked up, and it was before he made this deal...I think he could've gotten more for AI if AI was still on the court putting up 30-35 a game (albeit AI really doesn't need a showcase).

And annointed Denver Champs. That shit doesnt even make sense.

I think Denver will be succesful if AI decides and realizes now that hes older, he wants a ring, and basically takes over Dre Millers role which is to push the break, pass to melo off screen/curls, and score when the oppurtunity presents itself.

If AI plays like he has in philly where he is the main offensive player and controls the ball most of the time, i dont think the marriage will last.

AI can basically do every and everything Dre Miller can do better except post up. So if he plays within the system and scores when the oppurtunities present themselves, he can be much more effective/efficient than Dre was.

That said: lets keep a few things in mind.

1) Most championship teams play defense. Even Dallas on their road to the finals found a way to play defense. For all you cats who hate on Phx, yet are hyping Denver, FOH. Ive watched a lot of Denver gam,es this season and they are far away from being a good defensive team.

2) AI still hasnt played succesfully with a perimeter player. Im hoping maturity sets in and he finally does it. But until it happens, it aint happened.

3) A lot of stats gotta drop. Yall assume everyones gonna average the same shit on Denvers roster. Aint Happening. Nope! AI avgd 24 shots a game and Melo avgs 24. Somethings gotta give. I actually think though if AI plays within the system, he can be a lot more efficient and still AVG about 25 pts on close to 50% shooting. That shiot happens, watch out for Denver till they gotta play Defense.

4) they dont have much of a post presence right now. Dre wasnt a post presence, but he gave them a post optiononce in awhile. Now everything is perimeter oriented. Most of Cambys shots are spot up jumpers. So who are some teams that have won a ring without a post presence lately? I guess Dallas was close last year, but Avery had gotten them toplay real solid Defense before their meltdown. One thing i will say to the Post presence argument is that I see a perimeter based team winning a ring before a team thats post based and doesnt have a perimeter star. In todays NBA, guys like Yao need someone on the perimeter or they have no hope of winning a ring.

I mean he has to know his role, but I kinda think of him in more of the Pippen role. Facilitating the offense, using his experience and ability toi make plays for himself and teamates selectively.

The great thing with him is on any given night when hes hot, he can switch roles with melo and play more of the MJ role.

I'm still getting my head around the deal.

Clippers fans are swarming talk radio pissed, at least upon first hearing this news in LA a couple hours ago. I wanted that Young God, Magette, & a 1st deal but looking at this one:

-I like getting the two picks, even if they are gonna be late....maybe you can combo 'em to get one mid-round or maybe you can move your lottery with the two to move up a few slots.

-Joe Smith? Whatever. Money off the books. If that is the main goal, then unfortunately we have to hold onto Webber until he's finished. If Billy makes a move with Webber, that basically renders this Smith money irrelevant.

-Andre Miller? Serviceable point that maybe you can move down the line. And fortunately, he's the kind of player who's not quite good enough to help a bad team win ball games......so we should still be competing for worst team in the league status.

From the A.I. side, my feelings are mixed. Part of me really thinks the Clippers was the perfect situation. Him and Brand would be a nice mix. Him and KG woulda worked too (although the fact that they would have absolutely no one else around them would have prevented that from getting to true ring contender status....plus, Minny had nothing to give us).

But him and Melo? And then factoring in A.I. playing 14 games as the go-to guy? George Karl's tendency to dog a player out publicly? These are all red flags to me. I don't think A.I. will be the problem, I know he can distribute the basketball when he has confidence in who he's passing to. I also think Camby's shotblocking skills make him the perfect foil for A.I.'s D (which pretty much due to height is strictly being a ballhawk/passing-lane-disrupter).

Melo is still very young and into being 'the man', keeping up with Wade/Bron, etc. Will he be able to look at this move in a mature way and figure out that this move has the potential to make this team infinitely better? Can he grow up enough to realize that what works in West Baltimore ain't always the best way to solve a situation in a very public and professional setting? We'll see.

For all those talking the Larry Brown shit, keep in mind two things:
1) Larry coached Allen Iverson for longer than his miserable, transient ass coached any other player.....so A.I. isn't exactly the coach killer y'all making him out to be when he's got a real coach (like LB or even to some degree O'Brien-who Webber essentially got cut loose) and people to play with.
2) Don't you think LB and his boy have had numerous discussions about AI and whether or not he was worth the trouble? If the beady-eyed snake didn't think he was don't you think he would have told him?

So although I'm always going to be a Sixer fan, I'm always going to be an A.I. fan as well. He's the best player in our franchise's history and he's my favorite Philadelphia athlete despite his flaws. Dude is a warrior and unlike anything I've ever seen in an athlete.

I'll be rooting for us to stack ping-pong balls and for Allen to stack victories with my new favorite Western squad. It will be odd to see him in another jersey.....and I truly feel that the ones ultimately responsible for this are the incompetent ownership/management group that we've had ever since Pat Croce left. But the bottom line is it was never going to work out here for Allen Iverson at this point when it comes to winning a ring. There's at least a better chance of that for him now and maybe the Sixers can finally hit rock bottom and develop some sort of plan for the future (hopefully with new owners or at least a new VP and GM). If they bring back Larry, I'm done with them until the team is sold.

That's obviously paramount to this whole thing working out as well as it could (which is, without question, ringware). Subtracting 'Dre and getting AI gives us an absolutely staggering amount of scoring, speed and athleticism. But it means sweet fa if AI and Melo are competing for shots the rest of the year. What do I think will happen? No idea.

That said, fuck it. We just got one of the 10 best players in the league for an incredibly mediocre pg and some party favors. The league's scared. I'm estatic.

She was sitting next to me on a plane and we were chatting the whole trip while she was breast feeding her baby. Ten minutes later her baby was just sitting there and we were so wrapped up in conversation that the towel had fallen to her lap and her boob was just out in the open for at least a minute before I just couldn't hold a straight face any longer.

Billy has said "fuck it" to the next couple of years. But in all honesty, even with Devin Harris, Shaun Livingston, or any of the names tossed around, did you REALLY expect the Sixers to improve? No.

They have to start over. For the next two years, they will likely have a lottery pick AND a late first rounder for role playing. They will ditch Andre (who really isn't that bad, and is a TRUE PG, something Philly ain't had in a while) and Joe's old ass, and take that money to shop on the free agent market for young talent.

I think this potentially could be the move that in 3 or 4 years saves Philly. I shit you not.

You've got Iggy, Dalembrt, Carney. You've got ditching expired contracts of Miller, Smith, and Webber when they're done, and whatever young talent that money will buy. Combine that with the bare-minimum two first-rounders the Sixers draft for two consecutive years, including at LEAST one lottery pick...

The Sixers start improving steadily by 2008-2009, and make the playoffs by 2011. Archive it now, it's happening. They will be a Magic or Bulls level dangerous team once 2010 rolls around, with a slew of young talent that they can afford. Can you imagine if they get Oden, PLUS all these other elements? That's a dangerous team.

Billy clearly is throwing in the towel for the next couple of years. But he's insuring a shot at a potentially very good future. I think it's a good move for both teams involved.

All the talk of expiring cap is dumb i think. The two picks are what matters. They are going to have to get lucky in the draft and in trades like the Magic and Bulls did.
Having cap room is all good, but finding someone to spend it on, especially someone young to spend it on, is damned near impossible.
Look at the bulls this year they couldn't find anybody to spend on so they overpaid for Wallace.
Everybody reups all their young guns who can play at all. Plus since the teams which draft them can offer them the most money guys are less likely to bolt to another team.
With the exception of the Suns with Nash and Bell and maybe Detroit (although most of those were really lucky trades) how many good teams were built through free agency.

Spurs - Duncan, Parker, Ginobli (all drafted)
Miami - DWade
Clevland - lebron
magic - howard
dallas - nowitzki
denver - Carmelo (almost all their free agents have been busts)

He's the unquestionable face and franchise player of the Nuggets, even in lieu of this trade. If we're to be at our best, he needs to be the focal point and leader of the team, and Allen has to defer.

In response to Reply # 0

What exactly did you think the sixers were going to get???

They've been trying to deal the cat for YEARS.

This season, they announce that he has requested a trade (leverage reduced) and they announce that they will oblige him (leverage further reduced).

They reportedly had a deal done (the Charlotte rumor), but Iverson submarined it before it could happen, basically threatening to do some Alonzo Mourning b$tch move type business (leverage virtually non existent).

They've lost 11 games in a row. The building is empty.

They get offered a solid PG (Miller), a useless salary that will disappear after the season ends (Smith), and two 1st round picks that they can use for trade bait or select players with in "the deepest draft in recent memory".

Given the situation, how could they have done much better?

And for those that think the Nuggets are headed for the Finals now, a bit of NBA history for you; 76ers w/ Dr. J & George Mcginnis. Nuff said.
