When A-Rod signed his record contract, he was the top sports story on every news report i watched. He made the cover of non-sports mags like Esquire and GQ... I think 9 out of 10 baseball fans can tell you what the man looks like. You don't think MLB is playing up his pretty boy image? Please.

As for Sosa, we all know that in '99, most of the white media was secretly (and not-so-secretly) pulling for Mark "Andro" McGwire to pull it out. However, people were jocking Sosa a lot too, and he got a lot of press from everywhere.

Also, the game's most dominant pitcher is a Dominican -- Pedro Martinez, and I don't think he suffers from a lack of press coverage.

I wouldn't compare the hardship cats like Josh Gibson (and a truck load of others) had to go through to that of the under exposure of Latino baseball players to the general American public. I definitely agree that for what Latinos have been giving to the game, they haven't recieved much attention outside of Sammy and a couple of otghers.......... but these same cats are national heroes in their home land.....which means that they have endorsements left and right, and recieve the adoration of millions in their country. I guess what I'm saying is that they don't care as much for blowing up in popularity in the U.S. as much as they care the perception people have of them back at home....

but NO class of player will ever have it as bad as blk ball players did before jackie robinson got signed...& for the time immediately followin...HWVER...the underclassifyin i see based upon what i view as race is the same

When I am old and crusty and telling my grandkids stories about sports, there are going to be 4 things I can say for sure:
1. I saw the greatest basketball player ever.
2. I saw the greatest hockey player ever.
3. I saw the greatest golfer ever.
4. I saw the greatest catcher to ever play baseball.
I am sorry if you are a Fisk die-hard, but Pudge is a freak occurance. His style behind the plate is amazing and he can work a pitcher really well (if only the Rangers could pick up a few top starters, he would have them in a lethal position). And his speed is nuts...he came up playing with my cities minor league team (tulsa) and he would steal bases all the time, and with a right handed batter up, we would always try for third.
It will be interesting to see what happens in two years when his contract is out, because he should easily make "A-Rod" money, but the Rangers can not possibly work the salary cap to allow it. Probably the next highest paid player in baseball (or prosports, for that matter). I have to say that he is the best baseball player right now, because he has it all and does it all.

he has had bad knee trouble, but he works like mad on conditioning in the off season and his legs are doing pretty damn well now. if not, he could always move to second ala biggio...he has the speed and body for it, but he is so good behind the plate...

...Latino players are not very marketable unless they speak perfect english. Alex Rodriguez speaks English better then he does Spanish... and he's a pretty boy on a par with the ladies with Derek Jeter. So he's gonna get his money...


The thing about Latino's in baseball is this... there arent many marketable players in major league baseball period. Its a fact... only people like Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Nolan Ryan, Tony Gwynn, & Jeter have really had a lot of success. Fact is I cant name one person in baseball who has a baseball commercial currently running (that doesnt have to DO with baseball) except for Piazza and Gwynn in that collect calls commercial.

But the language barrier is the biggest obstacle I believe (for hispanics who have LIVED in spanish speaking countries all their lives at least.)

For example, Trinidad was in many peoples minds the best welterweight for years before he fought De La Hoya (he had the belt longer, fought better opponents etc etc). But because Oscar's english is impeccable he was obviously better known, and this goes even beyond the pretty boy factor.

here's the truth... marketing is aimed at those with money. And those with money dont speak spanish or broken english. So the people that are marketed are those who the people with money can relate to/understand. Sammy Sosa is a humongous exception to this. It doesnt only hold true for Latino players... think of Russian hockey players, and Serbian basketball players, and Japanese baseball players.

But then again youre talking about baseball... and unless you're a real baseball fan, I wouldnt expect you to know what Juan Gonzalez looks like or what country Rolando Arrojo is from.

Even good-looking players like Roberto Alomar arent attractive spokespersons due to the fact that he doesnt speak english in the same way that the targeted consumers do.
