Their numbers would be about the same IMO. When Erykah returns her numbers may not even be the same because she been gone for so long. I don't even think she will do the numbers that she did when Baduism debuted. India Arie's debut sold 2 million and her follow up releases only went gold so I would have to say the odds are against it.

roots need a freak accident, as in unexpected popular single or the industry to change to sell how u guys wish.
lets just focus on good music and great shows.
as long as u give ur 10 bucks for the cd dont worry about the mainstream.

as for what sells, well neither the roots or erykah are in the bland safe zone of artists the industry likes to promote
really the roots are a successful band, that i wished artist and the lesson would realize. yea they don't do g-unit numbers or mega-concert stadium tours, but a trillion bands out there would love to be in their shoes. they had a long career in teh music biz, lot of albums released, very successful touring schedule, and now supposedly they have the freedom to make any kind of album they want on def jam (lack of promotion is another thing)
go ahead and ask your local bar band if they want that kind of sucess
