And now the administration is threatening to cut off phone lines probably because they're afraid they will be caught. Several patients have died. People have to shit in plastic bags. The smell is unbearable. My mother says that Charity hospital is way beyond third world. The conditions are deplorable, deplorable. And she had to leave her family because her job threatened her that she would lose her job if she evacuated with the rest of us. Please pass the news on."

Please flood the media about this. Maybe we can call attention to their situation...

anyone you know in the houston, dallas, austin, san antonio, corpus christi, college station, humble, baytown, etc. areas:

Dear MoveOn member,

Hurricane Katrina's toll on communities, homes and lives has devastated the nation. Now victims must face the daunting question of where to go next—and we can help.

Tens of thousands of newly homeless families are being bused to a stadium in Houston, where they may wait for weeks or months. At least 80,000 are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced.

This morning, we've launched an emergency national housing drive to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) and search for available housing online at:

http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans.

Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help.

But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

The process is simple:

You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. We'll do everything we can to get your offers where they are needed most. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on.

If hosting doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the Red Cross to help with the enormous tasks of rescue and recovery. You can give online at:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=859

As progressives, we share a core belief that we are all in this together, and today is an important chance to put that idea to work. There are thousands of families who have just lost everything and need a place to stay dry. Let's do what we can to help.

http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Thanks for being there when it matters most.

28. "Benefit tour being planned-OKPS UNITE!!!"
In response to Reply # 0

One of my closest friends is Brandon Tarricone of New Orleans band Brotherhood of Groove (www.brotherhoodofgroove.com)

I have gone to NOLA the past seven Jazzfests and other times to visit him and his peoples (who at this point are my peoples too)I have kicked it with LEGENDS in New Orleans with him... he is a recognized playa in the game down thurr..

I just spoke to him on the phone, he's on tour in Montana.

After some emotional talk and heart spillage we began to discuss ways we can help rebuild the beloved Crescent City he has lived in for the past decade.

he said:

"I have no home to go to, and no flood insurance, so I guess I'ma tour around the country and raise some monies for the city, WWOZ (the Jazzfest sponsor radio station who lost its 30,000 radio tower and building was destroyed)," and regular joes like himself who have been left with little or nothing.

THe people behind the Voodoo Fest (which B.O.G. was scheduled to play this Halloween) will be involved in this touring effort that we want to reach across the northeast, a tour to benefit NOLA victims in lots of ways.

Brandon with the help of some lawyers for the Voodoo Fest have begun preparing the neccessary paperworks to set up the charity to funnel the funds from a tour to the peoples in need.

I am hoping that any OKPs with connects and what not can help out with promoters and venues, and artists... name artists... who can maybe get involved.

This is not a penny ante typa thing, there are already plans for BB Kings in NYC date not yet set, and possibly Higher Ground or Nectars in Vermont... 930 club DC, etc.

Brandon will tour and play with whoever (hip hop, rock and jazz and everything between) because he has nowhere to live for now and nothing left but the gear in his touring van. And his friends and family, many of whom are older jazz cats that don't get around so well and have little beyond their beautiful melodies and energies.

This is about the 9th Ward and the French Quarter. Uptown, St. Charles and Canal St. ALL OF NOLA. No racial or socio-culture lines here... we about helping ERR'Baahdy!

Pictures of the Grandstand at the Jazzfest fairgrounds are excruciating.

I believe in the power of the Okayplayer community.

please email me with any help of any kind.

from Davey D's electronic newsletter FNV...

A Few Things to Ponder: Juvi & Master P Step It Up Despite Huge Losses

by Davey D

Today in New York BET, The National Urban League, Russell Simmons, Ben Chavis and the Hip Hop Summit Action Network, Chris Rock, Juvenile and Master P held a press conference and spoke to the devastation in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina

Juvenile who has already started relief efforts informed the audience that he has lost his home, but is determined to see New Orleans rebuilt. He also came armed with information and statistics to back up his points about the US being able to do all sorts of things all over the world including being over in Iraq but not doing as much as they could and should in impoverished communities here at home. Many folks were impressed that Juv was able to come off with well-researched information and that he was willing to throw down in spite of his losses.

Master P who also lost many of his homes and businesses also spoke and told the audience that he’s always dreamed of being able to leave New Orleans to travel the world as a rapper and basketball player, but he never thought he’s see a day when he could not come back home…

Both Master P and Juv spoke passionately about how much New Orleans has contributed culturally to the United States and how it would be missed if not rebuilt.

Deborah Lee said that BET is putting together a huge telethon on September 9th and have commitments from a lot of major artists. Russell Simmons promised to help out and deliver some of those artists.

Chris Rock spoke and started off his remarks by talking about how places like Biloxi, Mississippi needed our help like 3 weeks ago. He joked about the challenge people had when they got into the airport and tried to hail a cab to get somewhere. He then honed in on the serious nature behind his humorous remarks which basically centered around how our collective neglect for these poor areas are now manifesting in what we are seeing today in new Orleans and Mississippi.

Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine spoke to the biased media coverage. She asked the reporters that were on hand to go back to their newsrooms and insist that they stop trying to show the people as animalistic criminals who are looting. She talked about how many of the victims are getting what they need to survive and in many places; there are no store clerks to take money.

Taylor’s points were underscored by some news agencies that have actually shown the coverage behind the looting, where you have people with babies who have been left alone for 2or 3 days with no help at all. Fox News in LA has been very good at bringing this point to light. In addition, while you do have some lawlessness, it is in the minority compared to all those who have been pulling together and trying to make it through one of the worst disaster to ever hit the US.

From my own personal experience as a journalist, I too have seen how things get twisted. There are two glaring cases that come to mind. The first was in 1989 after the devastating earthquake in San Francisco. The national media went and tried to make the residents of West Oakland look like criminals who were looting cars and people trapped under the Cypress Freeway. You had many people doing the armchair thing about how terrible these people were until it was realized that what they thought was looting was actually local residents risking life and limb to try to rescue people still alive and buried under the rubble. Some people were going back bringing trapped people water and health supplies. Others were going back and grabbing pursues and IDs for stricken and shocked family members. To this day people who saw the initial coverage still saw West Oaklanders as looters and not heroes. In addition, it was years after the earthquake before that, part of town were repaired.

The other incident was in London during the first bomb attacks. I was there and actually covered it. I gathered many interviews and have on tape person after person stating that the bombings were no big deal because they happen all the time and that the latest incident was the result of Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair’s foreign policies. I was there with other reporters and I watched with my own eyes as some of my mainstream counterparts went out of their way to try and find somebody who was panicked by the attacks and willing to blame Al Queda. What was being aired on national news in no way reflected what we all experienced at the bombing sites. In fact, we wound up eating dinner at a packed restaurant right across the street from open of the bombing sites and even took the subway home. More importantly, Londoners were not running around panicked. I have all this on tape, which we aired.

These examples are cited to bring to light what we are seeing with some of this coverage in New Orleans in terms of bias. For example, there are hundreds of dead bodies floating in those floodwaters; they have not shown that on TV. In those flood waters are alligators, they have not shown that. There was one news report that I actually did see about an elderly couple being trapped in their cars and 8 alligators swimming around them waiting to eat them if they left the car.

In many places there are people who are without homes who have been outside enduring the harsh elements for 2-3 days. That story has not been fully told. People think that it was real easy for folks to bounce out of town when they got the evacuation orders. We’re now finding out such activities were poorly executed and in many cases damn near impossible.

To underscore this point, folks may wanna check out a show they aired on the Discovery Channel a few month’s ago about changing weather conditions. They focused on Hurricanes and described an impending scenario about Hurricane X striking New York City. Scientist believe it’s only a matter of time before a catastrophic wind storm hits the big apple. During the show they showed how hard it would be for New Yorkers to leave the area and get out of harms way once the orders were given. The key words here are ‘harm’s way’.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that Katrina didn’t directly hit New Orleans. The direct hits took place outside the city itself. It struck in many of the areas that people were running away to. Many of the homes destroyed are outside of New Orleans as well. In other words, with a storm this wide and so huge and planes grounded you were likely to get hit unless you were able to get to the center of the state and even then it didn’t mean that you could do easily and quickly.

It’s like telling folks in San Francisco to get out of town because an Earthquake is coming and they rush across the Bridge to Oakland. That ain't gonna do no good. During rush hour it takes 2 hours just to get 40 or 50 miles away from Frisco. Can you imagine what things would be like during an ill planned evacuation Where you gonna run to when earthquakes and their damage can be felt hundreds of miles away?

We also have to note that you have rampant price gauging and we’re not talking about gas only. That’s another story that hasn’t been fully reported. Instead of giving supplies away you have people trying to charge top dollar in the some of the nation’s most impoverished communities for badly needed supplies.

You have scenarios where the police themselves have been looting. Lastly you don’t see a lot of reports about George Bush refusing to tell his oil buddies to sacrifice and lower gas prices. He was asked this by Diane Sawyer earlier today.

This is not to say that everything is kosher and everyone is without fault in New Orleans, but this is a life or death situation for a lot of folks. It should also be a hard lesson for all of to learn from. Are we prepared for a disaster when it strikes us. Can I really leave the bay if a massive Earthquake hits? Do I have enough supplies on hand? What am I willing to do if my house which is on solid ground is left standing while nearby house on soft land are decimated? Having a ‘tell them to go eat cake’ attitude in the face of disaster don’t cut it especially when people feel their survival is at stake...

"Don't Give your Hurricane Katrina Relief Donations to the Red Cross"

The Red Cross has a long history of thieving and stealing cash donations intended for disaster relief. Even as far back as the Korean War the Red Cross was plundering soldiers' mail and care packages. Some veterans have informed us that they would buy cigarettes from the Red Cross and find a twenty dollar bill or a note from a soldier's mother tucked into the pack.

More recent examples are plentiful. Families of September 11th victims were prevented from receiving half of the donations sent by well meaning citizens to the Red Cross for their aid. The recent Tsunami also was a great money-making opportunity for the Red Cross which was very clear in its calls for donations of only cash which would be much easier for the organization to funnel and launder and steal. Only recently have tsunami survivors begun to see a dime of the money collected on their behalf by the Red Cross.

The Red Cross is very adept at stealing money and looting mail. They have been caught inumberable times but always allowed to get away with their schemes because the organisation is so tightly linked to the establishment. Libby Dole, wife of Senator and powerbroker Bob Dole, was for a long time the head of the outfit. It is an organization by and for the elite insiders designed to gather intelligence and steal from those who need aid.

The International Organization of the Red Cross is a secret intelligence agency that has acted as an arm of the British Intelligence Services since its inception.

If you want to help survivors of Katrina, do a little research and find organizations that you can trust or better yet, use available resources and work together with neighbors.

"Red Cross Pocketed Half Of 9/11 Donations"

CNN | January 3 2005

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Charities swung into action after the September 11 terrorist attacks, raising more than $1 billion. But questions are being raised about where and how and how much of that money is being distributed.

Bearing the brunt Tuesday during a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's oversight panel was outgoing Red Cross President Dr. Bernadine Healy.

The Red Cross has raised more than $564 million for the Liberty Fund, which was set up in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

While the agency states on its Web site that it is spending more than any other relief agency responding to the terrorist attacks, it has distributed only $154 million.

Healy was hammered by one New York official for the Red Cross' decision to put aside nearly half of the money raised for future needs that may include terrorist attacks.

"I see the Red Cross, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars that was intended by the donating public to be used for the victims of September 11 -- I see those funds being sequestered into long-term plans for an organization," testified New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.

Healy later told CNN the Red Cross was a service organization and that previous donations had prepared the agency to deal with September 11.

"We had planned for a weapon of mass destruction attack," she said. "We knew our obligations under the congressional charter. We knew it involved victim assistance and sheltering. We knew that it involved with dealing with rescue workers. We knew that it involved blood."

She also noted that some of the new funding went toward helping communities learn how to deal with other threats such as anthrax.

The hearing was contentious, with panel members trying to get at the issue of donor intent and whether the Red Cross misled donors.

"What's at issue here is that a special fund was established for these families. It was specially funded for this event, September 11," said Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-Louisiana.

"And it is being closed now because we are told enough money's been raised in it, but we're also being told, by the way, we're going to give two-thirds of it away to other Red Cross needs."

The subcommittee asked Healy and her agency to provide the exact language of all of its television and newspaper appeals for donations.

Healy said what the agency has learned is it needs to explain to the public the mission of the Red Cross.

"Don't confuse us with the 9/11 Fund in New York. Don't confuse us with Habitat for Humanity. Don't confuse us with the scholarship in New York for the victims. We have to get that out," she said.

Controversy over the Liberty Fund was one reason Healy decided to resign at year's end. But she defended the agency's decision of how to use the money.

"The Liberty Fund is a war fund. It has evolved into a war fund," she
said."We must have blood readiness. We must have the ability to help our troops if we go into a ground war. We must have the ability to help the victims of tomorrow."

A widow who lost her husband in the World Trade Center attack also complained to the panel that what money was available from various charities was tied up in red tape and confusion.

"Why then haven't these charities been able to get together and agree on one uniform application? Why haven't they been able to get together and develop a quicker way for families to receive these funds?" asked Elizabeth McLaughlin of Pelham, New York.

"We all have the missing persons reports, death certificates, and any other proof needed to avoid fraud. But the charities are not sharing these documents and information with each other," she testified in tears.

She told the panel that she had to construct an 18-page spreadsheet to try to keep track of all the requirements of various aid groups.

McLaughlin received a $27,000 check from the Red Cross but fears she may still lose her house without additional aid.

The Red Cross said it has helped 25,000 families with food and temporary shelter, counseling and cash assistance.

I used to work for Boy Scouts Of America many years ago, and trust when I say that very little of the donated money actually goes to help people. A lot of it is reinvested in all their businesses.

People who remember my DELETED Red Cross post (like DOVE) know what's up... I was told *after* I donated to them that they were corrupt and I THEN told people not to use them.

That does NOT = Advocating.

(Nice diversion tactics though...)

people with intelligent thoughts, and something to say. How can we help? Let's talk.

In the upcoming September issue of OZONE Magazine, rappers David Banner (Mississippi) and 5th Ward Weebie (New Orleans) comment on Hurricane Katrina.

DAVID BANNER: “I think Hurricane Katrina has exposed America for what it is. I think it’s bigger than black and white. I think it has a lot more to do with rich and poor. We’ve always known that America is a racially driven country. We front like it’s all good, but we know the levels of racism that are in America. I think this is more than just pulling the race card. It shows that America doesn’t give a damn about people in the hood, period.

If this same thing happened in New York, they’d probably be out there mopping themselves. When 9/11 happened, there was help on 9/12. We sent billions of dollars overseas when the tsunami happened. You know, this is our home. We break our necks to help other people, and we fight for oil, but we can’t help our people right here in Mississippi. Mississippi is definitely not getting the relief funds that they really need because we’re not getting the TV time. There’s cities in South Mississippi like Pass Christian, Long Beach, Biloxi, and Gulfport that are just gone. And these are just regular, ordinary folks. White, black, rich, poor. These are places where our grandmothers and grandfathers stay. There’s history in these towns.

America is the most powerful country in the world, but it takes us four days to get there? The things they did four days later are the same things they could’ve done when it happened, period. They coulda flown helicopters in there or something. America is the most powerful country and the proudest country when it feels like it. They said they couldn’t get down there for different reasons, but those were just excuses. I sent a tour bus full of water down there. My bus driver paid with his own Mastercard. I told him to go ahead and buy whatever they needed and I’d pay him back. He filled the tour bus up twice with water, food, and supplies before the American government did. He drove down there from Memphis. Then I came down there myself and I sat and signed autographs and passed out water to the kids for four, five hours myself. How can David Banner, a so-called “gangsta rapper,” react quicker to a crisis than our own government?

There’s still people in Mississippi without power right now. The water is still not drinkable from the faucets. Then you’ve got places like the Red Cross using preferential treatment with the stuff people had donated. I had cats from the streets telling me they gave all the better clothes to the little white kids. There’s people who are coming city to city and can’t get water or food from the Red Cross without a little armband. We’re having a national crisis. If people need food and supplies, you should give it to them.

The bigger picture is that we’re gonna have to take care of our own people. We’re having a big benefit concert September 17th at Phillips Arena in Atlanta. We’re trying to raise $1.5 million. This is the first time that every radio station – Cumulus, Infinity, and Clear Channel – all came together, working together with no egos. T.I. got on the radio station and challenged everybody – all the football players and record company execs – and he raised $255,000 in two hours.

I’m glad Kanye said what he said on NBC. The President never gave a damn about black folks. I mean, we knew that already. That’s not a surprise. It was the perfect time for him to say it. Personally, I believe that if CNN had showed more white people stuck in New Orleans, the government would’ve reacted quicker.

I blame Bush for the time it took for them to react to the situation. I blame Bush for not taking this situation as seriously as they did after 9/11. This is ten times worse than 9/11. These are communities; whole cities of people, just gone. We’re talking about cities, not just a building. We’re talking about a whole coast of people. These are the same states that helped assure that Bush was gonna get in office, and then he turned his back on them. Where was he when we needed him? This is our President!

In the Art of War they tell you that the best way to control the people is through chaos. Most people make their decisions when something happens that sways them emotionally. So maybe this is God’s blessing. We as American people, no matter what race you are, we see that now we’re gonna have to set up better systems to protect the poor. All these organizations that we’re forming now need to stay in tact. We’re gonna have to be prepared to take care of our own. And we’re gonna have to make sure that these relief funds go to people who buy our records and support us and come to our concerts. Those are the families that I have to be concerned about first, because those are the families that put me in the position I’m in now.

There’s a lot more we can do as artists, but I’m really, really proud of the rappers who have stepped up to help. I can honestly say that we’ve concentrated so much on helping because it’s in our hearts and it’s the right thing to do, but we don’t get the publicity for it. We’re gonna have to make sure people see the efforts these rappers are making, because every time somebody gets shot or something negative happens at one of our concerts, they make sure they publicize it.” – David Banner (OZONE Magazine Sept 2005)

WEEBIE: “I think this whole situation is ridiculous. For one, we’re American citizens, and they’re calling us “refugees.” My whole issue is the response, how they were treating the people from the hood. My cousins – 20 years old and 10 years old – got stuck down there. They were calling for help and there was no response. My cousin had to lie and say she was pregnant to get help. In New Orleans, the system is fucked up, for real. The money wasn’t spent on the right shit. They knew about the levees years ago. This shit wasn’t a coincidence. The main areas that got flooded was the hoods, the black communities, all the people making minimum wage. The French Quarter got a little water, but for the most part, Jefferson Parish and the areas where the rich people stay at are good. New Orleans is fuckin’ underwater. They’re trying to move us out and recreate that whole city for the white people.

They’ve had a problem with the levees and the pumping systems by the 9th ward for years, and those are predominantly black areas. They knew that since the last big hurricane, damn near forty years ago. Every time there was a big storm, the 9th ward and downtown gets flooded. They coulda fixed this problem. They pumped money into the French Quarter. Parts of the French Quarter are still below sea level, but it’s higher ground compared to the rest of New Orleans.

They did a mandatory evacuation, but they didn’t do it until Saturday, and most of these people in the projects don’t have the finances or the transportation to even move. I was already out of town on business. To be honest, I didn’t even take the hurricane that seriously myself, because every time one is coming, they always turn at the last minute. A lot of people didn’t take it that seriously, and a lot of people didn’t have a choice. They didn’t have transportation or finances.

The local mayor and local government are speaking up for the city now, after they’ve seen the seriousness of the whole situation and New Orleans is under a telescope to the rest of the world. Everybody is really starting to take up for what they believe in, but that shoulda been taken care of from the gate. They really shoulda given these people more time to evacuate. Maybe it’s just me being mad and frustrated by this whole incident.

My car is underwater. My mom’s house is underwater. My grandma’s house is underwater. I won’t know the status of my crib until I go back down there. It’s just crazy right now. I still can’t even believe this shit; it still feels like a dream to me. I can’t even believe that my city has been hit this hard. I’ve never experienced anything like this. We’ve had storms and shit before, but I didn’t expect it to be like this. Thousands and thousands of families have to relocate and start all over. Me, you’ll probably see me in Houston. I don’t know. I’m gonna be all over. I’m gonna stay grinding. Hurricane Katrina, we depending on that FEMA.

I can’t really give you the full story, cause I wasn’t there. But just hearing about all the raping that was going on in the Superdome, I think that shit was just pathetic. We’re at a time of crisis right now, and we’ve got people raping people and doing dumb shit for no reason. Then, we’ve got people trying to stop people from getting food or whatever else. These people are hungry. I can’t even imagine the pure chaos. My love and condolences go out to all the families that suffered. It took me four days to get in contact with my family because the phones were down. Right now my phone is still acting up, so I’m still trying to contact some of my friends.

There’s no sugarcoating now; no bullshit. Our city was corrupted. Maybe this had to happen to our city to really clean house. They had so much corrupt shit going on in our city, and the school system was really fucked up. We were up to six murders a day, and that’s in the daylight. The biggest problem in New Orleans was that there’s no jobs, no money-making opportunities. I’ve witnessed some of my homies try to stop hustling and go to work, but there’s just no opportunities. This was a hard hit, but maybe it’s a major setback for a major, major comeback. I don’t know what the reason is that this tragedy happened, but I feel like it was real fucked up from the political side of things and the street side of things. It’s fucked up all the way around.

They’ve got to rebuild New Orleans. It’s a historical city. I couldn’t see the world without New Orleans. I can’t even look at a map without seeing New Orleans. But when they rebuild New Orleans, they’ve got to have jobs for these people. They need to have a better system, period. They need to have a plan for the city in case another hurricane hits. New Orleans is a great city. We make a lot of money down there – but where does the money go? That’s what I want to know.” – 5th Ward Weebie (OZONE Magazine Sept 2005)

33. "RE: CONSOLIDATION: Hurricane Katrina Relief/Support"
In response to Reply # 0

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are leaving this Sat. afternoon to take water, food, personal hygiene items, paper products and other items of necessity to the victims of Katrina. We were going to New Orleans, however because of the amount of devastation there, we're not getting clearance to go into that area. After some checking we decided to go to Shreveport, La. instead. We have made contact with pastors there who are working with some from New Orleans. Our plan right now is to deliver the above mentioned items, pass them out, provide some items for the shelters operating there, and minister the Word to those who are affected by this event. The pastors advised that they are in great need of tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, mouth wash, clothing, bedding, portable beds, (air mattresses, etc.), school supplies, towels, wash cloths, first aid items, underclothing, femenine products.

A large number of the students from Dillard University are being housed by the churches that we are working with. They are trying to raise money to send these young people on to their homes, as their school will probably not reopen again, at least this semester, if at all this year. Some other state schools are opening their doors to students who attended the affected schools, as this
appears to be across the board at all levels. We (our church) is going to try to get a head count of those living in the St. Louis area and we will probably send a van to bring them back into the area.

We are renting a 24 foot truck to make the delivery, and we will try to start loading Friday morning, and try to continue collecting items until it full, then put the rest of the items in storage. We will again take another truck load in about a month to help replenish depleted supplies in Shreveport.

If anyone would like to assist in this much needed ministry, you are welcome to go with us, as it appears that we will rent a 15 passenger van for those accompanying us.

As you are aware gas has taken a 54 cent per gallon increase in the St. Louis area and along the I-55 corridor (which we will mostly travel to destination). This is a one day hike. Many of you have experienced the same thing. If you can't go but would still like to help get needed assistance to the victims, you can send a check, money order, money gram, or Western Union, for what ever amount that God lays on your heart to give. ALL OF THE MONIES RECEIVED WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE THE AFOREMENTIONED ITEMS, TRUCK AND VAN RENTAL, AND FUEL THERE AND BACK. Our church is a 501 3 C certified and all contributions are fully tax deductible.

Anyone living in or near the St. Louis area, and collect things through your church, family or neighborhood can drop them off at our church. The contact information is listed below. I regret that we will not be able to pick up things, due to the short amount of time that we have to conduct this mission it leaves us no time to pick up. When we take the 2nd load we will have time to pick up items from those wishing to participate.

This trip we are limited in the amount of time we have. We take several missionary trips each year and St. Phillips Baptist Church of Trenton, New Jersey partners with us in these efforts and some of them are flying into St. Louis and we will drive from here, there and back. Most of us don't have any extra time that we can take off from jobs, as we use all of our time for missionary trips, so everyone has to be back to work on Tuesday morning and I have to be back on Wednesday morning. That is the reason for the rush.

The pastors that we will be working with is: Pastor Joe Gant, Calvary Baptist Church, 5823 Ledbetter Street, Shervepost, La, 71108, phone 318-636-4930, Sister Shirley Stewart is assisting Pastor Gant in this effort, and Pastor Harry Blake, New Caanan Baptist Church,1666 Alston, Shreveport, La, 71103 church phone 318-227-9993, as they are spearheading what some of the churches are doing. It is to be noted that Dr. Blake is out of town today because of a death in his family, however, Sister Monica Mickle is directing the effort from the church for Dr. Blake until he returns. As you are aware Shreveport was one of the 1st cites where persons were evacuated to, and persons are still being taken there. They will be setting up a tent city in a few days to accomadate displaced persons and families.

Again if anyone would like to go you are welcome. If you can't go and would like to assist in this ministry, please send a contribution as mentioned earlier. If you can't go, cannot send a contribution, please continue to pray for all those affected, and pray for us as we go to deliver the Word and provide a ministry of service to those affected.

Thanks for any consideration given this request.

Yours in Christ,

Mystics president make huge donation to Red Cross
09/01/05 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Washington Mystics

Washington, DC -- Washington Mystics President and managing partner, Sheila Johnson has donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross to help with the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The Mystics current roster has two players from the state of Louisiana. Rookie of the Year candidate, Temeka Johnson hails from New Orleans, while All-Star Alana Beard is from Shreveport.

"The Mystics and so many of us have families and friends in the hurricane region and while our prayers go out to them, we hope our financial contribution will help them to rebuild," said Sheila Johnson.

Although Temeka Johnson's home suffered considerable damage, her family members were able to weather the storm in a safe location. The Alana Beard foundation, located in Shreveport, is collecting necessary items for the victims.

The Washington Mystics encourages all to make donation to the American Red Cross by logging on www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW.

I have clothes and shoes ready to go (they were going to the church's yard sale to buy vans...but that can wait). I was going to give them to the salvation army...but i don't want them to end up in the thrift store uptown.

of whatever you're selling to a Katrina fund you trust? For example, as an author. Here's what I'm sending out this weekend:

Hadji here, a long-time Chicagoan with a special connection to Mississippi. (Both my parents are from small Mississippi towns while a good third of my family—cousins, aunts, play cousins, etc. still live there.)

So to support Mississippi and the other areas hit by Katrina, I’m donating 20% of the sales from my book, KNOCK THE HUSTLE: How to save Your Job and Your Life from Corporate America ($19.95, ISBN#1-932523-00-6) to Red Cross from now until December 31, 2005. I figure there’s no point in writing a book unless it helps folks, which is what KNOCK THE HUSTLE’s all about. And there’s really no point in making money unless you’re using at least some of it to help people. So…

In addition copping what many are calling “the coolest, most dangerous business book ever” and “a big ol’ size 12 right up the corporate world’s @#*,” owning Knock The Hustle is one more way for you to help some folks who really need it.

So visit www.knockthehustle.com. Get some free excerpts. If you like ‘em order a copy and maybe get a friend to do the same. It’d be great to have a massive wad of loot to give Red Cross for the holidays.

But if you decide not to buy my book, that’s cool. But please give to Red Cross or a relief effort that you trust. (Folks down there really need our help.)

Peace 'n' hair grease,

hadji

Hadji Williams, author of:
KNOCK THE HUSTLE: How to save Your Job and Your Life from Corporate America. "The first book to bring the urban streets to the office suites." (ISBN# 1-932523-00-06, September 30, 2005)

Free excerpts and order: www.knockthehustle.com // barnesandnoble.com
20% of your order will go to Red Cross for Katrina relief efforts thru Dec. 31st.
-----------

I know bunches of folks out here are artists, musicians, etc. I say, just pick a percentage and a timeframe and start racking up some loot to help folks.

And I've heard a mixed bag in terms of respectability regarding Red Cross, but I've looked into 'em. However, if anyone can recommend another disaster relief fund i can throw my donations towards, I'm all ears.

My training is on September 21, 2005 and I will be there for three weeks. I am talking to the job about it today. I have enough vacation time and sick time to cover it and I know they will not have a problem.

Volunteer, donate, encourage the next person, organize an effort... any or all of the above. Just.do.something!

Items needed at the Astrodome.

Clothes - For both adults and children. Mostly underwear and diapers, but any and all that you can afford to part with is certainly needed.

Communication devices - laptops, printers, cell phones, hand held radios(for communication within the dome), etc. People are still desperate to reach loved ones. If not from you, talk to your jobs about possible donations of these type of items.

Activites - Books(for adults and children), colors, makers, pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, board games, toys. The children and the adults for that matter are going to have little to nothing to do expect sit around and wait....and wait.... and wait....

Also blankets, pillows, etc.

And if you have even some of these items to give and no means to get it up there or to a donation drop, I'd gladly come around and pick up what I can to help get it there.

And to those in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin. I know people displaced by the storm will be sent to your cities as well. I encourage you to help as much as you can.

This is real, people. And real action is what's needed to help ease even a little bit of the tragic time these people are going through.

Volunteers are no longer needed at the Astrodome because of the large number of people who have already arrived. Please do not show up at the Dome to volunteer.

However, priority items are still needed. Drop them off at the Kirby at McNee entrance.

I'm working on a concept here. Granted, it doesn't REALLY support the immediate need, but maybe by the time I can get this into being, it will be something people would need at that point.

I have a house in Baltimore, newly renovated and ready to live in, sans furniture.

I want to offer it to a family that has been displaced and wants to have a "Fresh Start" in a new place.

I want to provide, the house, clothing, food, etc. But, I want to also provide the stipulation of some form of furthuring education, picking up a trade or something. You know?

I think this is something as a collective we could develop and bring into fruition.

I've sent a similar email off to some of my Grand Lodge officers and I'll see what they come up with.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions?

—Noah Winer and the whole MoveOn.org Civic Action Team

PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THIS, WE ARE NOT TRYING TO SPAM!

For all of you record fiends break heads etc. Soulstrut.com has opened its forums to posting auctions for rare and not so rare records to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They also have started a seperate relief fund that will be going to the Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org). If you want to bid on the auctions please rest assured that your money WILL BE GOING TO THE RELIEF EFFORT. EVERY DOLLAR RAISED GOES TO THE RELIEF EFFORT!

You can access the site directly at:

http://soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=1

Go to the general discussion forum and you will see about 3 pages fo auctions all for the benefit going on.

So far in straight donations the members of the soulstrut board have raised over $2400.00 and have a company matching those funds 3 to 1, meaning that overall with the match the board has raised over $10,000... Please support the auctions as all money raised is being added to that 3x match. We are trying to get to 20,000 so we can max out the 3x match at $80,000.

91. "FCC COORDINATING TECH AID FOR KATRINA DISASTER"
In response to Reply # 0

FCC COORDINATING TECH AID FOR KATRINA DISASTER
Quick notes from conference call hosted by the FCC today about urgently coordinating resources and personnel from internet/wireless service providers to get communications networks up and running in in gulf states.

Lack of communications systems has been identified as a critical issue holding back aid, missing persons, law enforcement, etc. in crisis areas.

FCC personnel are working throughout the weekend to coordinate these efforts with private industry, with wireless technology groups, FEMA, and state governments in Mississippi, Louisiana, etc.

One of the challenges they face in this effort is fact that the coordination effort involves multiple layers of bureaucracies -- also, that there has been no central point for directing available assets offered by private industry. Participants on the call included folks from Cisco, Intel, and wireless organizations.

Another challenge: working with FEMA and local governments to ascertain whether it is more immediately effective to get old systems up and running, or create new temporary ones. Depends on tech behind communications system in question.

COMPANIES WITH TECH ASSETS AND/OR HUMAN RESOURCES TO DONATE FOR COMMUNICATIONS AID IN KATRINA-IMPACTED AREAS SHOULD DO THE FOLLOWING

FCC Chief of Staff Dan Gonzales (dan dot gonzales at fcc dot org) says

FCC needs the following information from would be tech donors BY NOON EASTERN ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3.

1) identify the provider (name of your company or group)
2) identify assets you are willing to commit
3) state clearly what assets you are technologically capable of providing (IP? data? voice?)
4) what your logistical requirements are to bring that to the affected area.
5) can you bring generators? if so what size? capacity? power levels?

SUBMIT THIS INFORMATION TO

PART-15.ORG (they have an online submission form to collect this data)
or wireless@part-15.org

contacts: Michael Anderson (wireless@part-15.org) 630-466-9090, and Claudia Crowley (ccrowley at gmail dot com), 817-292-0230.

Snip from part-15.org website:

The FCC and FEMA is in a desperate need to reestablish communications in the disaster area. More specifically, the metropolitan area of New Orleans and it's surrounding areas. What can Wireless access internet service providers do to help? We can reestablish internal communications and provide connectivity to all disaster relief efforts by installing point to point, point to multipoint links, IP Web cams to assist the police and fire departments who can not be everywhere in such a large area, VoIP phones to provide voice communications to relief personnel in remote areas and many other types of normal everyday communications that most people take for granted.

To accomplish these goals, we will need not only the License Exempt Industry as a whole, but local communities, major companies, and all others that can provide even the slightest of assistance to our teams.

Link

* FCC reps on the conference call also said they may relax some regulations (power restrictions, etc) but are concerned that the effort be coordinated centrally, carefully, so that various emergency communications "efforts don't end up stepping on each other" and causing more of a tech mess.

* Quote from call participant Jim Duncan, Cisco Critical Infrastructure Insurance group: "Operational issue number one is fuel and energy. Convoy accident happened today with fuel truck heading into one area... getting fuel and power in is critical, nothing can happen in terms of communications without that. Communications priorities will include law enforcement issues, but also missing persons -- getting refugees access to webpages to unite missing families... "

* Some call participants also noted that any volunteers who end up being assigned in the affected area should bring sleeping bags, water, food so as not to strain resources. Hotel rooms, cars are hard to come by. Tech experts who end up coming to the area (by way of coordinated aid efforts) should be prepared to camp out.

In response to Reply # 0

Katrina: Hip-Hop Reacts and Responds
By Tiffany Hamilton, Houston Williams & Nolan Strong

Various notables are leveraging their star power to raise money or help in the relief effort. Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jay-Z, David Banner, Master P, James Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records and others are spearheading a variety of projects aimed at aiding those displaced by the hurricane.

Moguls Diddy and Jay-Z are contributing to the effort by donating $1 million to the American Red Cross. Furthermore, both men run apparel companies and will contribute clothing from their Sean John and Rocawear collections for those in dire need.

Diddy told AllHipHop.com, “This needs to happen. We want to do more in the future, because this is going to be a long process (of rebuilding). This is something that we are doing for our people. Those are our bothers and sisters – our family. It hurts.”

“We, as African American men and leaders of our community felt it was a necessity to join forces and help,” Jay-Z agreed via a statement. “Diddy and I are committed to supporting our people in whichever way we can." Combs and Jay-Z expect to present their $1 million dollar check during a September 9 telethon that cable network BET is organizing in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

Many had to evacuate their homes, leaving everything but the bare necessities behind. New Orleans started evacuating people from the city on August 28 in preparation for Hurricane Katrina, which struck the city the next day on August 29. The storm imposed its mighty will on those that didn’t flee the city. The total damage assessment to New Orleans and the surrounding areas could top $25 billion. Rappers and entertainers are already lining up to assist fund raising and contributing to the relief effort.

Although some entertainers are eager to help, some within the African American community believe there is a general lack of backing, concern and support from the federal government.

"If we could put a million people, a million solders in Afghanistan and Iraq, we can definitely put the same effort towards New Orleans, and Mississippi," Juvenile said at a press conference hosted by BET and The American Red Cross, "They have the ability to fly down and save people. All I’m asking is please take some time out and put forth the same effort - if not more - towards our country, because the United States and we are trying to make it."

Bad Boy artist Young City (aka Chopper) echoed the sentiments of his New Orleans brethren.

"I just think that it's real crazy that our government ain't kicking in to send something to New Orleans." Young City told Allhiphop.com, "He's talking about how we need to help people in Iraq but he isn't even concerned with people in our own country."

With a prevailing dissatisfaction, the masses within New Orleans have started to march in protest, all the while being wrought with intolerable health conditions, chaos, looting and even reported acts of rape. BET’s live telethon has already secured talent like David Banner, Jay-Z, Juvenile, Diddy, Common, Stevie Wonder and others like Omarion. The event is in conjunction with the National Urban League, American Red Cross, Warner Music Group and Essence magazine to produce and raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Others like Banner are organizing independent concerts to raise money for local aid.

James Prince, CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records, has opened a shelter in Houston, Texas to house those in need of a place to stay and Master P. and his wife Sonya Miller announced the formation of Rescue One, an organization dedicated to helping residents cope with the aftermath of the hurricane.

Master P, reared in New Orleans’ Calliope projects, explained, “We are contributing our own money toward items such as food, clothes and shoes and we are also reaching out to corporations for donations. Sonya is reaching out to companies for product donations for mothers, like Pampers and Gerber baby food, as well as soliciting donations of items helpful to ladies and girls.”

Juvenile, who helped popularize New Orleans with his Cash Money Records brethren, was visibly shaken when speaking of the Hurricane and its devastating effect on the city and surrounding areas.

“I am obviously devastated by my personal loss but thank God that I was able to get my family out to safety while many families were not so fortunate,” Juvenile said. “In the aftermath thousands of people in New Orleans and Mississippi are struggling to survive without food, shelter, running water or a way to contact loved ones.”

Master P. told the Associated Press that his uncle, father-in-law and sister-in-law were still missing. New Orleans natives Baby, Juvenile, Lil’ Wayne, Young City and countless others have lost their homes, businesses, studios and other personal assets due to the horrific storm. The United States announced today (September 2) that they would seek a total of $10 billion dollars in funding to rebuild the flooded city.

Comedian Chris Rock expressed skepticism at the current relief effort that has and contrasted it with the war abroad.

“We are rebuilding Iraq right now and I don’t know if four guys with box cutters will fly a plane into a building again, probably not,” Rock said. “But I do know if we don’t take care of these millions of people America will be destroyed, because this will bring the whole country down."

Thousands of domestic refugees from Louisiana are currently being transported from the Superdome in New Orleans to the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. According to President Bush, The Coast Guard has rescued almost 2,000 people of the thousands in need. President Bush stressed patience, noting that the storm had battered four states and said the cleanup “will take years.”

"We're dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history," Bush said. "This is going to be a difficult road."

Many entertainers are still reeling from the effects of the Katrina and are still searching for family members. Fats Domino, the pioneering R&B singer was recently found alive and well after missing reports surfaced. Others haven’t been so lucky.

"I got fifty cousins down there now," Snoop’s younger brother Bing Worthington told Allhiphop.com. “My family is from Macomb, Mississippi and my grandmother is in Jackson, Mississippi. This is touching home because Macomb has been hit. No power, no water, no nothing. It’s not as bad as Louisiana, but they been hit. Everybody’s feeling the wrath."

Images of officials in the Bush Administration vacationing and accusations that Bush undercut flood control funding for the city angered some. The president cut funding that would have improved the levee holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain, according to a report in the Washington Post. Katrina smashed through the embankment flooding New Orleans in a manner never seen before.

Furthermore, Democrats have accused Bush of a slow response to the hurricane, which initially punched through the city on Monday August 30. According to reports, Bush didn’t return to Washington from his Texas ranch until Wednesday afternoon.

"I seen walk out with a dog. He was on vacation!" Bing continued. "When things go wrong, no one’s around.”

Aside from the issues with the president, Sean “Diddy” Combs took issue with the broad media portrayal of African Americans. The Bad Boy mogul told AllHipHop.com, “If ain’t got nothing to eat…I’m gonna loot. If I was out there, I’m gonna loot believe that. If I got my kids, I’m going to get some water, something to eat, some sheets…those are necessities,” Diddy said. “I ain’t seen nobody carrying TV’s.”

Even before the tragedy called Katrina, New Orleans had societal problems that received little press. The city like other cities considered to be the “Deep South,” has the lowest reported high school graduate rates, the highest number of teen pregnancy and a dismal employment ratio.

“These places were horrible before any of this happened, have you been to New Orleans outside of Bourbon Street?” Chris Rock asked rhetorically. “All I have to say is that everyone needs to send as much money as they can humanly can to the United States Red Cross.”

Master P said he and Baby of Cash Money never spoke prior to the crisis in their hometown. The New No Limit mogul said adversity brings out an opportunity for the Hip-Hop community and the general population to unite.

"We have all been in so much competition and this is the only thing that brought us together. It ain’t about how many records you sell, how many movies you make, how many cars, you have,” he said. “All of that is irrelevant when you are talking about how many lives we can save now. It’s about how many times we can come together and do our part."

For more information on how to donate or to get involved log onto www.redcross.com or click here for a listing of other charities in AllHipHop.com’s Ill Community.

I was in Chicago (go figure) when he said it. At first he was talking about how people were going on about their everydya lives not trying to support the victins and how he was doing the same thing and decided to ask his accountant or someone how much money could he doante, adn he was saying how the troops have permission to do whatever and how when they show black victims, they say they're "looting", but when they show white vuctims, they're "finding things". Then Mike Myers said his part. I guess that was upposed to be they end, but Kanye just bust up and said "George Bush doens't care about Black people." My and my friends were all in the hotel room together and were silent for like 5 seconds and we went crazy. They cut to Chris Tucker real quick. Then when they were showing rerunds, they cut out that part and put a picture of the Red Cross emblem. Wow. Dude just up and said with a "stop me if you dare" look on his face. More power to Kanye.

The government will not let any private parties in. We have to get an affiliation.

Now also since they are receiving some aide, we especially have to have some affiliation. I called around to some rescue agencies and red cross and they all want us to donate our monies more than anything else.

Seeing as though red cross has already collected 28 mil and they have still not made it to LA I am highly suspect of that option.

I am told that the best way a civilian can help is to either volunteer with an agency or send food and supplies through another agency.

Unfortunately unless we can get some publicity to back us and even then it is highly unlikely an idea such as mine won't work.

The best thing to do is to send clothes and food through local organizations like a church or a rec center any big corporations have a whole heap of white washing before the people will ever see the money that is donated.

My boss also had his people call and they told him the same thing and he is far more wealthier than I.

Basicaly the big agencies and corporations want the money. Your best bet is to go with a small local organization, if not your money may never reach its intended subject.

Why would all these talking heads on television (including the President) advocate an option like the Red Cross if there is another much better option. President Bush and other politicians on CNBC, etc., are going to be responsible for the improvement or digression of the crisis. I don't think these leaders would advocate an obviously "inferior" relief option.

I'm not familiar with politics. But, I went to the Red Cross homepage. I've confronted advocations for the organization. And, luckily, I was able to donate quickly and easily. They even gave me a tracking number and say that a reciept will be mailed.

In fact, I've heard trying to send clothes and food is the inferior option. Bush said those materials will be necessary next. Immediately, cash, deposits to big umbrella firms (i.e. non-profits like the Red Cross) are where it's at.

We are deeply saddened by the current events that have occurred in Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Some of us are missing family members; some of us are without clothes, food, water or shelter. More than 80% of one city has been completely destroyed. We urge you to reach out and help in some shape form or fashion.

Dear Fellow XXXX,

As some of you know, I called Baton Rouge home for the three years prior to entering XXXX. During that time, I often worked with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to gain funding and support for several of my classroom, school, and community initiatives. BRAF is one of the area's oldest, most prominent non-profits dedicated to community development in the South Louisiana area.
As I witnessed firsthand, BRAF strives to ensure its programs and donations are both sustainable and directly impacting those in greatest need. Their intimate knowledge of South Louisiana's communities, leaders, and organizations allows them to place their resources where they will be most effectively and efficiently utilized.

If you are thinking about donating funds to a Katrina Relief fund, I urge you to consider BRAF. They have established two funds: one to help rebuild infrastructure in New Orleans, and the other to directly serve the tens of thousands displaced in Baton Rouge. Their website, which gives detailed information on both funds and a link to donate online, is:
http://www.braf.org/page25271.cfm

Thank you so much for reading this and considering this organization.

Sincerely,
XXXXXX

PS: Please forward this to anyone whom you believe may be interested in donating directly to a local organization.

# The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

# The Red Cross has been meeting the needs of thousands of New Orleans residents in some 90 shelters throughout the state of Louisiana and elsewhere since before landfall. All told, the Red Cross is today operating 149 shelters for almost 93,000 residents.

# The Red Cross shares the nation’s anguish over the worsening situation inside the city. We will continue to work under the direction of the military, state and local authorities and to focus all our efforts on our lifesaving mission of feeding and sheltering.

# The Red Cross does not conduct search and rescue operations. We are an organization of civilian volunteers and cannot get relief aid into any location until the local authorities say it is safe and provide us with security and access.

# The original plan was to evacuate all the residents of New Orleans to safe places outside the city. With the hurricane bearing down, the city government decided to open a shelter of last resort in the Superdome downtown. We applaud this decision and believe it saved a significant number of lives.

# As the remaining people are evacuated from New Orleans, the most appropriate role for the Red Cross is to provide a safe place for people to stay and to see that their emergency needs are met. We are fully staffed and equipped to handle these individuals once they are evacuated.

New Orleans Refugees Being Sent to Toxic Waste Dump in Arkansas
by Bison William Saturday, Sep. 03, 2005 at 9:35 PM

I live in Fort Smith Arkansas and 360 people from NO have been shipped to an old army base outside our town. The problem is the base barracks they have put the people in is listed as a toxic waste dump. The barracks are so inundated with lead paint that the people that have to get around them wear masks so they don't have to breathe the fumes coming off them.

There is no air conditioning and it is 95 degrees at this time of year. I am afraid some of the older people will die of stroke from the heat.

This morning I went out and snuck into the area where they are being kept and told many of the people that the buildings were poisonous and got many of them to promise to leave as quick as they could before I was told to leave or be arrested for inciting a riot..

When I say the building are poisonous you must believe me. They have been trying for years to find a way to destroy them but the EPA won't let them do it..If they burn them it will release lead into the air and it will settle in the lakes and streams around the area. They can't tear them down and send them to other places because no one wants poisonous wood..They ground around them is even poisonous from the lead wash off when it rains. So what does our Illustrious Repug Governor do,.. well he puts NO refuges in them... Ain't that america baby..

State To Set Up Temporary Shelter For Hurricane Victims

POSTED: 4:31 pm EDT September 3, 2005
UPDATED: 4:36 pm EDT September 3, 2005

BOSTON -- The state plans to open a temporary shelter in Massachusetts for at least 2,000 refugees from areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, Gov. Mitt Romney announced Saturday.

The state also plans to send 475 troops from the Massachusetts National Guard to the region as part of "Operation Helping Hand," the name given to its hurricane relief effort.

Romney spokeswoman Julie Teer said the guardsmen, who are likely headed to Louisiana, are expected to leave sometime this weekend. The site for a temporary shelter and "state staging area" has not been determined, she added.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said Saturday that he's preparing to accept 2,000 refugees at the convention center in South Boston, should the city be asked to house them.

In a statement, Romney said, "Massachusetts will rise to the occasion. We have one mission, and that is one of compassion. The people of the commonwealth want to offer a helping hand to victims of this tragedy."

More details of the state's relief operation are expected to be announced Sunday at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency's bunker in Framingham.

141. "Donate to Madison Parish, Louisiana"
In response to Reply # 0

A family friend is the Superintendent of the Madison County School District. Madison Parish is one of the poorest parishes in Louisiana. Despite their own situation, they are taking in many of the evacuees from New Orleans. They are in need of donations to provide schooling, shelter and food to the evacuees. Any help you can provide is appreciated.

http://nls.k12.la.us/~mpsb/

Here is the e-mail I received:

Thanks all for the prayers and words of encouragement. I thought 9-11 was the worst civic disaster I would ever experience. I was wrong. I am in one of the poorest parishes in Louisiana and yet the citizens of Madison Parish are giving what little they have to the evacuees we are housing here. but I would not mislead you, yes this kind of situation will bring out the best in people but it will also bring out the worst, I just had a meeting with local law enforcement agencies because individuals are siphoning the gas from my buses parked at night in the school parking lots and local criminals aware of how stretched the police force is were breaking into and robing schools on a nightly basis-I now have to pay staff to stay in buildings around the clock and guard my buses. Among the refuges there is much despair, many have no homes or jobs to go back to, all are not sure about the whereabouts of family members. I just don't know how some of these people are holding up. I met with the local Pastors, and we now have nightly prayer services at the three shelters. We were able to get over 200 students enrolled in school and more are arriving everyday, one parent who has been with her children 24 hours a day in the shelter commented that now with her children at school she could now cry. We brought the students school uniforms, books, book bags and other essentials. The state superintendent (commissioner), (a state agency that is really doing a great job in this crisis) has granted local district superintendent extraordinary authority to take whatever steps that are necessary in the service of children-we can wave many rules and regulations. Our next step this week is to set up after-school and Saturday programs and activities so as to minimize the amount of time the children spend in the shelter. On a positive note, I just learned (this morning) that the National Association of Black Cardiologists is making a significant financial donation to our district for the support of the children evacuated from New Orleans. If anyone is interested in sending a donation you can make a check out to "Madison Parish School District Hurricane Relief Fund" at:

Madison Parish School District
301 Chestnut Street
Tallulah, LA 71282

Thanks, we will send you a receipt and a tax I.D. number
Stay well and please send whatever you can. We appreciate it!
MAJ.

Banks Give Reprieve to Stricken Homeowners
Sep 02 6:00 PM US/Eastern

By ALEKSANDRS ROZENS
AP Business Writer

NEW YORK

With tens of thousands of homeowners in four states displaced by Hurricane Katrina, some banks and finance companies are allowing customers to forgo monthly mortgage payments for 90 days without incurring late fees or other penalties.

This forbearance, as the industry calls it, is also being extended by some banks to home equity lines, credit card balances and student and auto loans.

Banks are, in some cases, waiving ATM fees.

The Mortgage Bankers Association, an industry trade group, estimated that 360,000 single-family mortgages in the four states were affected by the hurricane and its floods.

With many homeowners unsure how they'll make their payments in the months ahead, banks are setting up toll-free phone numbers to allow customers to call in and get a reprieve. In some cases, banks will increase credit lines on credit cards or home equity lines of credit.

Customers will be able to get through to their banks by phone even if they do not have specific account information. They should be prepared to offer personal data like names, addresses and social security numbers.

Banks and other lenders may already have a good idea about which home loan payments may be late because they cull mortgage data by postal ZIP code.

"We are coding up all of our credit card accounts and mortgage loans. If they are in affected ZIP codes, we are flagging them," said Thomas Kelly, spokesman for the consumer division of JPMorgan Chase & Co. "We realize these are extraordinary circumstances but we will work with you."

"Forbearance is being urged. This means a 'beneficial departure from existing practices' to benefit people hurt by a natural disaster," said Douglas Duncan, chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Lenders are being encouraged to suspend loan payments for borrowers for up to three months. Also, mortgage payments can be lowered for up to 18 months and, in some cases, lenders can create longer payback plans.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which insures deposits at nearly 9,000 banks and savings associations, this week asked banks to allow customers to restructure loans, ease terms for new loans and help customers get short-term loans for living expenses until insurance proceeds are received.

Some banks like Wells Fargo & Co., which has 24 mortgage bank branches in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi, are setting up special customer call centers. Wells Fargo said it is increasing home equity lines of credit for customers affected by the hurricane.

"We have a special team that has been receiving calls since Wednesday. These are staffers who are trained with customers in disaster situations," said Deborah Blume, spokeswoman for Wells Fargo's mortgage business.

Blume said customers should be prepared for "many financial related questions," but the bank has copies of financial paperwork such as tax forms that borrowers may have lost in the storm.

Customers are unlikely to reach their local branches in the affected areas by telephone, as communications are in disarray. But nationwide toll-free numbers are operating.

At AmSouth Bancorp, spokesman Rick Swagler said some branches have reopened in neighborhoods without power. The bank was able to truck in large generators to power its offices.

Swagler said AmSouth, which has offices in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and Tennessee, is offering ATM fee waivers and customers with home equity lines of credit do not have to make a minimum payment. Also, AmSouth customers with an installment loan can skip a payment without incurring a fee.

Swagler said some consumers scattered from their homes, are using public libraries to contact banks or find out about branch locations.

While many borrowers may be tempted to contact housing agencies Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, they are actually better off going directly to their lender because that lender will be able establish the forbearance and set up any new loan terms.

147. "Why are the animals at the zoo CHILLING?"
In response to Reply # 0

I looked this up because 2 things occured to me:

1. How the hell would they get elephants and rhinos and giraffes and shit out of a zoo? (I used to work at a zoo, and I have NO IDEA how that would take place)

and 2. If I found out that they airlifted a ELEPHANT outta there and left some kids and elders, I was going to be full blown PISSED.

so i actually WAITED to look this up..but apparently, the safest place in New Orleans was in the ZOO!

******************************************************************

Dan Maloney, general curator at the Audubon Zoo, reports that although "attendance is really down," the staff that have stayed at the zoo are doing fine. Animal food stocks are holding up well except for some of the specialty items such as waxworms and crickets, while humans have found their own food supplies on zoo grounds. They have enough fuel to keep their generators running for quite some time -- actually the zoo was so well prepared for this disaster that emergency workers and police are coming to the zoo to get their vehicles fueled.

Security at the zoo has not been an issue though they have heard shots outside the zoo. With increased police and military presence in the city the aquarium staff should be able to get back in the building soon.

The zoo, aquarium, and ACRES (the off-exhibit research facility) all have docks. So, the Baton Rouge Zoo will be boating supplies down to New Orleans soon.

Dan is not ready to have people show up to help. They may be over the course of the next few months and he or the AZA will let us know what we can do to help.

The accompanying email from Dr. Bill Foster mentions that their is an opportunity for people to donate money to help. Please feel free to do so on your own or, if you can wait until next week, we will set up a mechanism to accept donations here and send them all in at one time.

Again, thanks for all of the offers to help. We may get our chance soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter from Dr. Bill Foster, AZA President
Dear Colleagues,

First and foremost, on behalf of the Audubon Nature Institute - the Audubon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas, the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species and their staff - let me thank you for the calls, the e-mails and the generous offers of help. I am so proud to be a part of the AZA zoo and aquarium community that works together, plays together and comes together to support one another in times of crisis. This is indeed one of the most devastating crises to faced by our community in many, many years.

As noted in Kris Vehrs update on 1 September, we know that the Audubon Zoo crew are doing okay and are in good spirits. Ron Forman is in the city, and is coordinating zoo and aquarium security with the New Orleans police and fire departments. As we get new information, we will be continuing to pass it on to you, as well as posting updates on the AZA website.

I need your help and understanding. We are all anxious to provide assistance, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that New Orleans is an extremely dangerous place to be right now. The decision makers are on the ground and aware of all your offers of help. That said we must respect the fact that Ron and his staff are on the ground and operating with the best perspective and information. IN ADDITION, INDIVIDUALS SHOULD NOT ACT ON THEIR OWN BUT COORDINATE THROUGH AZA TO ENSURE THEIR SAFETY.

Getting assistance to our colleagues is problematic at this time due to emergency restrictions; however, we are preparing our plan and will be ready with immediate assistance when supply routes are open.

There are also many of us who are trying to reach those with ultimate authority who can perhaps ease restrictions, allowing supplies to be brought to staff and animals both. We are in direct contact with Dr. Betsy Dresser and beginning to coordinate plans for getting supplies to ACRES and the Aquarium of the Americas. We will let you know, as we need your assistance.

The Houston and Baton Rouge Zoos will be coordinating the physical efforts for the Zoo once we can get access to New Orleans. Rick Barongi and Phil Frost and their teams are busy with coordination and they ask you to call AZA with offers of help. If you want to help in any way, please visit http://www.lpzoo.org. You will be contacted as needs are determined and mobilization plans are set. PLEASE DO NOT CALL HOUSTON ZOO OR BATON ROUGE ZOO WITH OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE.

We do have one very exciting new development. To further aid Audubon Nature Institute, its employees and their families, I have asked Lincoln Park Zoo President and CEO Kevin Bell to spearhead a fund-raising initiative to assist our colleagues in New Orleans as they move beyond this tragedy and begin to rebuild their homes, their lives and the wonderful facilities of the Audubon Nature Institute.

Kevin Bell has agreed, and I thank him and his staff for taking on this great need.

You will be hearing from Kevin later today with more specifics about the initiative and how you can involve your institution and provide the public that may contact you an avenue to help in this important relief effort.

The Executive Committee of the AZA Board of Directors will handle the distribution of these funds.

In addition, we are also establishing a mechanism for helping displaced Audubon Nature Institute staff obtain jobs and temporary housing. You will be hearing additional information as things are put into place.

For those of you who have planned to participate in AZAs Annual Conference in Chicago later this month - I ask that you do come and join us. We are a caring family of people committed to advancing science and research, to educating everyone who walks through our doors and to encouraging our visitors to have fun while exploring the natural world. It is important that we come together, stay connected and support one another during these challenging times. We can do so most effectively if we come together and work together.

Thank you again for the overwhelming displays of generosity you have shown for our colleagues. It is not a surprise, but continues to be very meaningful.

Sincerely,

Bill Foster
AZA President

Many have expressed specific interest in not giving to larger orgs like the Redcross, etc.

healthehood.com is a Mississippi foundation by David Banner. They claim to be able to get into the poorest areas of Louisiana and Miss. to help people.

So, this may be a viable option for some folx.

Also, if you're in the ATL, tomorrow from 9a-9p T.I. and other artists with V-103 will be at the Varsity on Spring St. taking donations for HealThe Hood.

IMPORTANT: David Banner has also asked that if there are any LAND ATTORNEYS, please donate your time. There is a real fear among the evacuees, that the government will try to take the land that their parents, grandparents, etc. worked so long to own. Also,if there are business owners who are able to get supplies at wholesale to these victims, they'd appreciate that help as well.

received this one from a friend today...

We were watching Larry King last night (I can't stand Larry King), but he was having a "how you can help" program. The last guest was Irvin Mayfield from the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. He is a Grammy nominated trumpet player who is known as a cultural ambassador for New Orleans. He is spearheading a relief effort for the countless musicians of the city who have lost everything. Many of these people made their lives as street musicians in New Orleans providing the culture and sound that made New Orleans so unique - many of whom are of limited means, and some who were homeless to start with. Now, they don't even have the instrument that provided them a livelihood. The address to send donations and the web site address is below.

literally
here is some information from James Dunn, Editor In Chief for RIME Magazine:
************************************************

For those of you who (like me) feel mildly thoughtless watching Andy
Milonakis and searching the internet for new shoes while the Apocalypse unfolds across our country's Gulf Coast, you may be interested in the following information.

According to a post I read on the New Orleans Craigslist site, it is
possible to volunteer to help the recovery effort in person. You have to go by your local Red Cross (don't call, phones are swamped) and sign up to take what is known as the Disaster Course, which teaches you everything you'll need to know. Seems like it's a 3-day course. You'll need a tetanus and hep b shot. You'll have to be able to lift 50 pounds, and you cannot be asthmatic, allergic, or suffering from any other such condition.

Once you're done it's basically a waiting game. You don't get to choose where you're sent: it could be one of the affected areas, or a shelter in any one of the many cities now housing evacuees. You have to be ready to leave within 24 hours of notice, whenever that is. You have to be prepared to rough it - sleeping bags, cots, no frills. But you do get a free round trip ticket to wherever you're sent, and your food and basic necessities are all taken care of by the RC. Most importantly, you get the rush and fulfillment of doing something other than being a consumer in a pretty little cage, even if just for a while.

I happened to be visiting New Orleans just as Katrina showed up, and spent the last week evacuating homes, sleeping in shelters, and driving friends and family back to Cali. It was and is a horrific situation, but the experience of it all, coupled with the knowledge that you're actually helping in a real-life way, is one of the most intense and inspiring experiences I've ever gone through - and it's just what I think many of you are looking for: adding some adventure and meaning to your lives.

Of course we all have careers and responsibilities that get in the way of being ready to leave your life behind in 24 hours' notice, and I'm no different. But if it is at all possible for me to go back and help, I will, and maybe this message will motivate some of you to take a chance. Google the Red Cross and find the branch in your area for the official word from them.

peace to the Toure, Nichols, Daliet and Borden families.

Five things you can do to help immediately

1. Duplicate what we are doing elsewhere in New York City, in your city or town, on your college campus, at your church, synagogue, mosque, or other religious institution, via your fraternity or sorority, or via your local civic or social organization.

2. Cut and paste the information in this eblast about

Five things you can do to help immediately

and share this information, as a ONE SHEET, with folks near and far, via email, or as a hand out at your event, religious institution, and with your civic or social organization.

3. Voice your opinion to local and national media, and to elected officials, via letter, email, op ed article, or phonecall, regarding the coverage of the New Orleans catastrophe, as well as to the federal government's on going handling of the situation.

4. Ask the hotel you frequent, such as the Marriott or Holiday Inn, to give your hotel points to an individual or family in need of a stay for a night, a few nights, or longer, depending on how many points you have. Be sure to get confirmation that your points have been applied in that way. Encourage others to do the same. Also inquire if your airline frequent flyer mileage can be used for hotel stays as well. Finally, either offer to pay for hotel rooms, or encourage others to do so, including your place of employment or worship or your organization.

5. Dare to care about other human beings, no matter their race, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion, geography, culture, clothing, hairstyle, or accent or language. Like September 11th, the New Orleans catastrophe is a harsh reminder that all life is precious, as is each day we have on this earth.

AND REMEMBER that our attention and response to the New Orleans catastrophe needs to happen in three stages...DISASTER, RECOVERY, and REBUILDING. We need you for all three stages.

169. "NYC-CITY HARVEST COLLECTING"
In response to Reply # 0

Thank you for wanting to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. During a disaster, donating money is the most effective way to help.
• Money allows organizations to purchase exactly what is needed in a cost efficient manner when and where the supplies are most needed.
• Money allows for transportation and fuel charges for the food and supplies.
• Food procured by relief agencies closer to the disaster can be provided more safely, since food can be damaged in transit and deemed unsafe to eat. This also allows relief agencies to reinforce the suffering local economy.
• Large quantities of mixed donated items can hinder the work of relief workers who need to focus on very specific needs of the disaster victims.

Thousands of people are reaching out to food banks in their area for food and supplies. If you would rather donate money to support the work of America’s Second Harvest in getting the necessary food and supplies to local food banks in the affected area, please log onto www.secondharvest.org. 100% of your donation will be used for the victims of the disaster.

If you do want to donate food, there are two ways you can do that:
1. The relief effort requires very specific food items. City Harvest will be collecting those food items on Sept 17th from 9:00am - 5:00pm at various food drop locations throughout the city. All of the necessary information including locations of the drop stations will be on our website by Thursday, September 8th, 2005.
The food items will be collecting are:
Canned beef stew
Canned chili
Canned pasta (ravioli, Spaghettio's, etc.)
Peanut butter in plastic containers

If you want to donate food and it is one of the needed items, please feel free to stop by one of our trucks on September 17th. We encourage you to stick to the list of needed items as this will allow the food to be more readily available to the people that need it most. If you have already collected food that is not listed above, you can still drop it to one of our truck sites on the 17th. However, we can not guarantee that it will be used for the disaster relief.

2. If you cannot make it to our trucks on Sept 17th, you can log onto our virtual food drive at www.cityharvest.org starting September 10th, 2005 and order specific food items to be shipped through our national organization America's Second Harvest.

Thank you for your efforts. Please reach out to us with any additional questions or concerns by calling Jill Kogan at 917-351-8765.

173. "WHAT WE'RE DOING IN ATLANTA"
In response to Reply # 0

We are in need of funding to provide gas cards/target
cards/wal-mart cards for families to purchase what
they need. We have families that need money who are
being kicked out of hotels and motels. We have
families that are traveling to the affected states who
want to repair their homes. We have so many immediate
needs for these families that the call is just
tremendous.

Imagine, here in Atlanta and the already overcrowded,
underfunded, low wage/no wage cities around the South
and the nation are being inundated with THOUSANDS of
evacuees and survivors. AND Gas prices have gone up
to 3.00 a gallon. They are in immediate need of a
state of normalcy for emotional, physical, and mental
stability and it's the black community who is being
stretched to take care of our own.

Any donations we recieve will be put directly towards
helping families such as Chiquita Simms and her 14
year old son who lost everything, even the school he
was attending. Or the church family of pastor Joan
Powell whose 300 person congregation lost everything
and has relocated to Atlanta in need of the basic and
the extreme. There are so many stories to be told
but the need is so great talking is less important
than acting. We are all acting down here and spending
our own money, directly from our own pockets to take
care of families with nothing and nothing coming due
to the slow and deplorable response of President,
State and local Legislators, these Multi-national
corporations and the Red Cross.

Here in Atlanta we have four things going on,

1) Send volunteers to the relief distribution sites
located here:

1. Birmingham: This is a site for relocated familes
located at
1st Baptist Church at ACIPCO
1629 32nd Avenue North
Birmingham, AL 35207
Lead Partner (Clergy that Care)

2. Selma: This is a relocation site and East
Central Mississippi
Dispatch Site
1705 Selma Avenue
Selma, AL 36701
Lead Partner (Circle of Love Fellowship)

3. Montgomery: This is a relocation site
5700 Carriage Hill Drive
Montgomery, AL 36116
Lead Partners (New Life Baptist Church and
ACBCP)

4. Mobile: Gulf Coast Dispatch Site
521 Bayshore Avenue
Mobile, AL
Lead Partner ( 1 for Life)

In addition to servicing these areas we have delivered
food and
supplies door-to-door to communities in the following
areas
1. Pasagoula, Mississippi
2. Biloxi, Mississippi
3. Irvington, AL
4. Bayou La Batre, AL
5. Moss Point, Mississippi
6. Prichard, AL
7. Dauphine Island, AL

2) We are also coordinating with them to be community
advocates for survivors in
hotels/churches/shelters/homes.
(finding homes for families, providing them with
driving directions, providing basic necessities and
gift cards from wal-mart, target, etc., finding lost
family members, helping their children get in school,
getting healthcare supplies)

3) We are providing information from the SOS sites to
the students in the AUC and on to the National
Website.

4) We are researching for them and the NHHPC
information on social, political, economic,
healthcare, and educational ramifications of the
Hurricane.

5) We are sending volunteers for operations
coordination here in Atlanta. (manning the phones,
delivering supplies to families in churches...)

If you want to help us we've collaborated with the
SOSAfterKatrina.org, a coalition of organizations
brought together by the Black Leadership Forum and the
National Coalition on Black Civic Participation,
Natasha Jennings and I are coordinating on behalf of
the National HipHop Political Convention in Atlanta
and Montgomery.

Latosha Brown really was the spearhead behind this
whole coalition. Here's the information on where
checks can be sent to.

ACBCP (Alabama Coalition on Black Civic Participation

Convention)

DAVID BANNER HEALS THE HOOD
BENEFIT CONCERT SEPTEMBER 17th IN ATLANTA

ATLANTA, GA (September 11, 2005) – On September 17th, the always energetic and articulate David Banner is making his mark as the Mississippi hometown hero with his charity foundation "Heal The Hood"
(www.healthehood.com), by organizing a relief concert for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Heal The Hood Hurricane Relief Concert will be held in Atlanta at Phillips Arena, doors open at 6:00pm, show starts at 7:00pm, and is supported by many of David Banner’s music industry friends and the assistance of radio’s power house companies.

David Banner goes on the record to say this about the reason he is so passionate about the relief concert, “the tragedy of Katrina has affected all of us, considerably the worst natural disaster in US history. I feel that we all must unite to help our fellow citizens in their time of need. My vision for this concert is designed to meet the immediate needs of those who are underprivileged and have lost everything in areas that are looked over”. Atlanta’s own Mayor Shirley Franklin stated, “Given the current crisis in the Gulf Coast, I am so please that so many of our local and regional urban radio stations have united with David Banner and a number of the nations acclaimed, Atlanta based celebrities to produce a benefit concert that will assist thousands of evacuees in Atlanta and many of the smaller cities that were devastated by Katrina. This united spirit once again exemplifies the spirit of our City.”

Hosted by Lil’ Jon, David Banner will be performing along with his celebrity friends Nelly, T.I., 8Ball and MJG, Ali & Big Gipp, Lyfe, D4L, Boyz N Da Hood, Chopper, 112, Dr. Charles G. Hayes, Canton Jones, and many more have signed up to lend their support to Heal The Hood Hurricane Relief Concert.

David Banner's Heal the Hood Foundation has also teamed up with Radio One, Clear Channel, Cumulus Media, Cox Radio and Infinity Broadcasting to volunteer efforts to solidify the concert's success. Marsha Meadows, Vice President of Marketing for Radio One, commented about David Banner and his efforts, “David Banner is a dear friend to Radio One, we believe in him and his efforts. David has a heart as pure as gold and has always been the first to join our community efforts. When Hurricane Katrina struck, we knew that as a company, and information source to the community we had to do everything possible to help the helpless. We also knew that he would be one of the first hip hop artists to step up to help Hurricane Katrina victims because he is from Mississippi. Radio One is honored that David asked us to be a part of the ‘Heal the Hood’ campaign.”

Revenue generated and items collected from the Heal the Hood Hurricane Relief Concert will be donated to the hardest hit states that need a great deal of aid, including communities in southern Mississippi, southern Alabama, and New Orleans. The foundation also plans to assist evacuees that have relocated to the following areas: Atlanta, Arkansas, St. Louis and Texas. As a Mississippi-based foundation, Heal The Hood is able to get into the poorest areas to help the people by directly delivering supplies such as food, water, clothing, and necessities not fulfilled by other non-profit organizations.

The Heal the Hood Foundation is asking for donations of a minimum of $25 per ticket. Tickets are available for purchase at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Phillips Arena box office. Tickets will be on sale starting Monday, September 12th, tickets have been set for $25, $40 and $100; all profits will be donated to the cause; 1,000 seats will be reserved for the victims of Katrina.

Several corporations are on board to contribute to the victim’s monetary, product-based, transportation and volunteer needs. Heal The Hood Hurricane Relief Concert is also being backed by B.I.G. Face Entertainment, Hosea Feed the Hungry, Mayor Shirley Franklin’s Office, 4 Sho 4 Kids Foundation, and the Shandon Anderson Foundation, which are uniting their services and volunteers to make this event a success. For individuals who would like to make additional donations, various non-perishable items such as, baby supplies, toiletries, canned goods, and under garments will be collected at Philips Arena, the day of the show, loaded into tractor trailers and sent directly to Katrina victims. This concert will definitely impact those who truly are in need.

Those who aren't able to attend the concert are encouraged to make donations through the Heal the Hood Foundation by logging on to www.healthehood.com for details.
