and I've heard the stories of the "caribbean way"

however, none of the men in MY family was ever into nothing like that. Not that I know of anyway.
and re: this "but i'm more or less thinking of the idea that carib women/children are suppose to accept it"

people are only gonna do what they can get away with.

In response to Reply # 6

Yeah I can't say that that's far from the truth or a just a generalization. I got at least 3 uncles who ben married over 20 yrs but have kids who are younger and they are STILL married to the original wifey.

Plus I got a Trini homie who's 50 yr old pops has kids younger than his(4 and 6).

I hear even more stories when the ladies in my fam get to gossipin'

had 3 families going same time. all with like 12 or more kids per. PLUS outside relationships.

they all carry the surname and are considered fam, tho.

weird.

And he aint the only one. I think it just depends on how the family handles it.

In America I don't think you can have that model. it don't work.

like I didn't know until I was older that some of my uncles and aunts were half brothers and sisters.

and even at funerals folk will walk up and be embraced.

I think it's just a different way of looking at it- certainly in my family it was.

Some of my uncles still got 'em tendencies, but in America aint nobody trying to keep a family together thru turmoil so instead there are divorces.

kinda sad really cus it's the kids that lose out in that situation and it aint their fault that the man couldn't keep his discipline.

*shrugs*

it is what it is.

as it is about creating a social or familial solution for an obvious issue that needs to be addressed. Just writing off the kids aint right either. They have a right to have a family, a history, a father.

Just cus that dude effed up aint got nothing to do with that child's development.

ive heard latin men were womanizers

ive heard caribbean men were likely to have more than one family

ive heard indian (asian) men were superhorny

but since ive dated all kinds of men, i tend to think that them having or not having the attributes listed above had nothing to do with their culture

removes most of the burden of responsibility from the "product" and places it on the "user". Of course this is assuming the individual in question either fits or is playing up to the stereotype.

or it was their homelife and they care not to go down that same path

i dunno. the more progressive/less "stereotypical" WIs are really great men. the ones that don't claim that bullshit and aren't (too)homophobic...maybe even a tad too americanized. theyre great dudes. they embrace the good parts of being WI. lol

but I can't really disagree with it.

I hardly know anyone without an outside sibling.

Matter fact, I know people who were in the same classes in school with their half siblings.

I think the more interesting discussion is *why* this is so.

I have yet to date a Caribbean man with a healthy, functioning relationship with his father.

I have yet to date a Caribbean man who was not excessively doted upon by his mother.

It seems to me that many of these men lack an example of manhood is supposed to be.

Compounding this is the fact that many mothers *raise* their daughters while *spoiling* their sons.

They never learn what a man's place is in a home. They don't learn to take responsibility for their actions.

Even if they loathe their fathers for not being there, so many become *just* like them.

Mom is first of 9 siblings and also has 5 half sisters, one of whom is nearly 2 years *younger* than me.

Dad has 17 siblings. He is 4th of 10 that my grandfather had with his wife. The other 7 are distributed among 3 other women.

My granddad insisted that they all be raised together.

My half brother is 11 years older than me, born when dad was 22

Mom is 10 years dad's junior, and so is only 12 years older than my half brother.

My current "stepmother" is 25 years my dad's junior, a mere 8 years older than me and 3 years *younger* than my half brother.

She also has a 13 year old son.

Dad said, and I quote, "If a man goes to by a dog, should he get a full grown bitch or a puppy?"

He's...special.

He has a brother who had his first kid at 15, first grandkid in his early 30's and was a great-grandfather before hitting 50.

When my grandmother died they listed among her survivors "Assorted offspring of Joseph Alvis"

We literally can't count them.

When people stop me in St. Vincent and ask if I'm an Alvis then claim to be my cousin I FULLY expect Uncle Joey to be their dad.

When I was teaching community college this 18 year old girl came and told me Uncle Joey is her grandpa...I couldn't even be shocked.

and it's true.

I think the social dynamics of family life in the Caribbean is what really need to be looked at.

The basic building blocks of the thing.

Now some of those men I dated are really trying to shrug off the legacy of their fathers, and have seen how much pain their mothers went through.

But some of them can't seem to do right, even though they *know* they're wrong.

Some of them really do think that the essence of being a man is to drink rum, knock domino and have 101 woman all over the place.e

There's a cycle of helplessness among women though too, that exacerbates it all.

Boys see their mothers just letting things go, or suffering because of the social censure that would surround leaving.

Actually come to think about it there is a whole issue about so called "morality" the image of woman and respectability and the role of the church wrapped up in here somewhere.

One big mess.

YOU AIN'T NEVER LIED.

My father's family is ESPECIALLY like this.

Everything is swathed in silence.

Can't ask nobody anything.

People just clam up and look at you like you just cut down dem breadfruit tree.

No-one in his family ever addressed how my parents broke up or asked us kids about it.

When my aunt's husband nearly killed her they just hushed the whole thing up.

They're like that about illnesses and crap too.

Just Weird.

is the downfall
this is the underlying issue
the uneven messages of worth
what gives a woman her worth vs where a man draws his worth
a man draws his worth some how from dealing with worthless women?
its really backwards
resentment and just plain low self esteem
that shit is behind a whole lot of issues we (black people) deal with
when it comes to male/female relations

they're included
when i say male/female relations i don't mean just in relationships
but just in relating to each other on every level
from being siblings to friends to mother/daughter/son and father/daughter/son relationships

all that shit is affected and the different signals coming from all different angles is just a recipe for the chaos we see in many relationships and family breakdowns

and i dont hear that argument about carribean men as much as i hear it about black american dudes

a guy i dated in au asked me why black men come over there, knock chicks up and then bounce, he said he wasnt generalizing, it had happened to 3 chicks he knows. he said the chicas tink the dude is going to stay with him b.c of love and the child and that aint the case.

noone knows if he's alive or where he is. His father, my uncle doesn't even acknowledge that he was born.

I'd love to find him. I really liked him. I still got a pic of me and him playing soccer when we were little.

If men of other parts of the world had game like Caribbean men, women wouldn't clamour for the few million huddled near the beach.

The best lovin (sex, cookin, understanding etc) came from a West Indian man.

In response to Reply # 78

Some people didn't know who they were or were not related to because of:

- lies about who their father is

- uncertainty about who their father is

- no marriages so lot of wacky shit concerning surnames.

My half brother's mother's surname is Williams. Dad didn't know of any Williams who we were related to us.

Turns out she was using some maiden name of a grandmother or some such nonsense.

Mostly I avoid certain family groups.

My dad's people are Portuguese so I avoid all the light brites and people with names like Perreira, De Santos, De Nobriga and Francis

it really just depends on how you were raised.

i've seen more strong, faithful dominican men than unfaithful dominican men in my life, but that's just what i've been exposed to.

but still, we're "dominicans" so we sleep around a lot.

which is just a reflection on who/what raised you.

in essence, it's just a cycle.

of colonialism? The perplexing thing is that Af. Americans started out as British slaves too - heck, that's what we were for the first 165 years or so. But I don't know of any similar Cultural Institution up here. Maybe we have the N-word, y'all have poly-familial structures?

and found out some interesting figures.

Apparently nearly half of Caribbean children come from single parent homes.

A third are raised *solely* by women, many of whom are older aunts and grandmothers.

There has to be a connection with that too.

I know nuff screwed up out of control youts who did grow wit dem granny.

colonialism.

- Family groups being broken up a lot, and men especially being sold and moved a lot

- The development and eventual predominance of matriarchal family units

- The idea of the "yard" or "dooryard" where the offspring of a matriarch all eventually live (my mom's fam is like this)

- The dichotomy in the roles of men and women, with women being the keepers of the home and children (respectability) while men work and run the streets (reputation)

- The emasculation of the black man during colonization and his eventual marginalization.

Theories abound.

That's what I'm saying. The only real difference between North America and the Caribbean in terms of black folks is that the pure British stuff remained in place there whereas the white folks here eventually became culturally "American" after a certain point. There has to be some difference in the attitudes the British infused into folks in the islands. I'm not familiar with the nuances of Caribbean or Britsh culture, so I can't call it.

there are similar circumstances out of which similar behaviors are born.
the absent father is a huge one
the absent father with children by several women
the father who starts one family, picks up and leaves and stars a whole new one, never to acknowledge the first family again.
the father who has different baby mommas that he deals with
when he feels like dealing with them, etc.

there is an institution it just isn't identical to the one coming from the west indian experience.

This post is about the institution coming from the West Indian experience.

And Black folks in the US were almost completely rural until about 60 years ago.

no Cultural Institution around it here. And frankly, I *don't* know that it happens to teh saem degree. Sure, some of it happens. But folks are in this post talking like having multiple families is just a basic fact of life in the Caribbean. Everyone in the Caribbean knows about it and it's almost a part of the cultural lore. That is not the case here. We have our own fucked p shit that's part of our cultural lore and this is not a part of that.

i dunno i dont have an answer to your question only other events that occurred in the carib that might have played a role

1. slavery was abolished earlier
2. indentured servants
3. JA is a monocrop country as were most islands
4. most of the carib is still somewhat rural

those are just possibilities but i dont know

I'll hear some story about how my Dad ran into someone in Brooklyn and got to talking and realized he's a relative, then somehow my Mom gets involved and boom - I've got 20 more relatives.

Or some person will track down one of my parents, talking about: "How is M2 doing, I heard he moved to Seattle?"

I don't even remember the person, they just saw me playing with the other kids at some family event when I was 3 and was just curious.

Shoot - I wouldn't be surprised if I have cousins on this board, cuz I know I'm not the only on this board from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Peace,

I mean there was some wild s*** going on within my great and great-grandfather's generation.

Thing to remember is, ALL KIDS were treated and raised like family. People may have cheated but the kids were treated as well as resources allowed.

I've heard of stories where my great-grandfather would go to another Island and bring the mother and child over to ours, if some distant relative fathered a kid and didn't raise it.

We take care of each other.

BUT, my Dad's generation - things calmed down and cats are pretty much hardcore family men.

But that's just my family though, it varies

My Step-Dad's family there was really none of that stuff going on.

As for me, I just don't cheat - proud to say that. I'll date other girls if we're casual/not exclusive, but once we say exclusive I don't cheat, not even close.

all i'll add for now is:

I say oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family
Woe, misery
Shame and scandal in the family

Down in Trinidad there was a family
With much confusion as you will see
A mama and a papa and a boy who was grown
He wanted to marry and have a wife of his own
He found a girl she suited him nice
He went to his father to ask his advice
His father said: "Son, I have to say no,
The girl is your sister, but your mama don't know"

Oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family
I say oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family

Then a week went by and the summer came down
Soon the best girl on the island he found
He went to his papa to make it a date
His papa shook his head and to this he did say
"You Can't marry that girl I have to say no
Cause the girl is your sister, but your mama don't know"

Oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family
I say Oh, misery
It’s shame and scandal in the family

He went to his mama, he covered his head
He told his mum what his father had said
His mother she laughed,
she said: "Go man, go
Your daddy ain't your daddy, but your daddy don't know"

Oh, misery
It’s shame and scandal in the family
Oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family
I say oh, misery
Shame and scandal in the family
I say oh, misery

This is the real reason I can only date white girls.

I have to go outta my way to make sure I'm not dating a relative.
