"the future of hip hop"

- is not with blackalicious
- is not with aceyalone and project blowed
- is not with binary star/mad lib/

- please don't let it be the gorillaz or deltron

- I'm afraid it might be them anticon kids. Imagine that hip hop events where dancing is frowned upon

- I pray that it's not Lil zane, ja rule, dmx or jay z, fabolous, free way - reincarnations of biggie and Pac

- If there is a God it won't be fusion - with jazz, electronica, rock and roll, D&B...

But what does that leave?

they are doing something that most hip hop artists are not trying to do. They're seriously trying to create a fanbase that doesn't need Vibe/XXL/The Source/BET/MTV/Black radio in order for it to survive. They're busting a DIY like their indy rock counterparts.

If it takes off, if they manage to break out of the charts and pd's of the hip hop infrastructure that could mean a lot for hip hop.

I just don't think it'll be good for cats like me, who like to hear some Southside, or some g-rap. they by and large have a hatred for what people dance to and chill to. It ain't intelligent enough..et cetera.

I don't understand. What are they doing that is so much different than any other independent never-get-a-write-up-can't-afford-an-ad in Vibe/XXL/Source artist?

Besides, these days artists hardly sell if the music isn't danceable or radio friendly. Anticon is neither.

It has the potential to be very very large. Not necessarily with hip-hop audiences, but it will likely catch on with the indie rock crowd, fans of Radiohead-type groups, and those weird white guys who work at CD stores. Whether they like it or not, Anticon has the potential to be loved by people who hate rap. They already have fans who don't listen to any other kind of hip-hop. All you need is the right A&R to stumble upon a Sole concert, and boom, the industry is filled with sloppily-dressed white MC with tales of their depression.

Lets just pray and hope that the music and rhymes are cohesive.
Not wack beats and tight lyrics or dope beats and wack lyrics. And hopefully we will have a balance instead of the same ol cats always in the top of every category, and maybe radio will expand their goddam playlist and stop playing the same ol lame ass top 40 all day, etc. Maybe underground cats can get paid too and at least go gold on a consistent basis.......

In response to Reply # 0

without Hip-Hop's fusion with Jazz you'd have never heard of:
Tribe
Gangstarr (Definitely Primo...)
Digables
Pete Rock and CL

and lots of other underground cats that influenced other underground cats...

Fusion with other styles of music might be the only thing that can actually SAVE Hip-Hop. The closemindedness in Hip-Hop is part of the reason that it's so stale these days. Everybody's afraid to experiment.

i'm talking more on the jazzmatazz side of things.

but that's where a lot of cats are pointing the artform towards.

the other thing I hear a lot, is folks want production to be more like Dj Shadow and less like Dj Clue. More layered, more sounds, more change ups....not just a platform for rapping. Like Siah and Yeshua for instance.

sure, that would be nice. But sampling has become so expensive, that artists have to risk getting sued, and put out 300 copies on a do-it-yourself label and hope that lawyers, etc never hear it. Or they can go the Puffy route and pay for one big ass "I remember that from the so-and-so record" sample. There will never be another major release with a lot of samples and/or cut-and-paste production. The whole business side of music is what hurts true musicians...

So how much can you save if you do it like Dr. Dre and replay the music/samples?

Why don't more artists do this? Is it just because there are so few musicians out there for Hip-Hop producers to use?

I don't understand why a group like a Mint Condition couldn't do something like this just to make some $$$ on the side inbetween albums.

I have no idea about whether or not it's cheaper to sample or replay shit. (Some OKP's in here would know-hopefully they'll shed some light...)
But as far as my tastes go, I've always preferred sample based production to live instrumentation (with the one exception being Heavy Rhyme Experience by the Brand New Heavies). I don't really see Dr Dre as a bandleader, which is what you'd have to be to write music for a band right? If anything I'd rather go back to the "naked drum machine and no samples" cuts of the early 80's DefJam days than have some half-ass studio band trying to be funky on Hip-Hop records...
Basically what I'm saying is, Hip-Hop was created bu using other works of music. To keep it's true lifeblood flowing I think it needs to have that edge to it...

not ony do I NOT like Dr dre's "production" work. But I never bought the Chronic (in fact I call it "The album that killed Hip-Hop"), and I've always said to anybody that'll listen that listening to Dr Dre's records are basically listening to Parliament albums with 808 kicks added to them. All he does is jack George Clinton's shit and people never seem to notice. Not only that, I think Gangsta rap killed the creativity in Hip-Hop. Before that cats were evolving. Now it's all the same formula.

not to mention people didn't have to write dope lyrics anymore as long as some "fools got smoked" on the record and in the videos. Jailsuit wearing fools IMO.

it's always seemed a lame idea to me… lacking creativity. people think sampling as a whole shows a lack of creativity, but I like hearing the original sounds.

if you have a band, why not just play something original instead of replaying old shit? you're never gonna sound as good as the original and it just shows that you REALLY don't have creativity when you actually have an instrument in your hand and still can't come up with anything fresh…

The main reason for sample-replaying is cost. Do you really think people would've stopped sampling so much if it hadn't gotten so expensive? The Bomb Squad might still be together making beats right now.

And as for "playing something original", a person who plays an instrument could say the same thing about Hip-Hop producers.

I'm assuming that you're already a hip-hop insider so I won't get into explaining the aesthetic appeal of sampling. and we all know how sampling developed… producers who could not afford or have the ability to use live instrumentation. of course, that is no longer the case, but that was essentially the genesis.

now… if you have access to a full band, you can play a number of instruments and the most you can think to do is play a bunch of P-Funk and EWF covers like a 1970s high school marching band… it's just kinda lame.

Why the hell not? what's wrong with any of these groups? I'm not too familiar with Project Blowed but the future of hiphop definitely includes Madlib and Blackalicious and I'm glad. Those are names that I trust for good ol' quality hiphop.

Don't worry, it won't be. There's nothing at all wrong with a good concept album every once in a while.

Don't know about them. I appreciate the zealousness of some of the more hardcore cracker-oriented hiphop, but they don't know the whole story, so while there's certainly room for groups like this, i wouldn't necessarily want to see hiphop in the hands of groups like this. They may do as much harm as good.

Why not? Hiphop is being fused well with Jazz (Roots, Madlib, Guru) rock (Outkast, Qtip?) and other genres. I see nothing wrong with it as long as its done well and the essence of hiphop isn't completely tossed out.

there's no way in 1978 they could have seen where hip-hop would be in 1988.

there's no way in 1988 they could have seen how hip-hop would be in 1998.

and there is definitely no way we'll be able to figure out where this thing will be in 10 years.

personally, i see a few things happening...

1) major corporations are gonna drop anybody selling less than gold

2) smaller to mid-sized companies are gonna continue scooping up major label leftovers and talented vets that can't even get a major label A&R to answer the phone

3) more tour packages: remember spitkicker, hard knock life, and the okayplayer tour? well, hip-hop touring is making a comeback. i expect stadium tours to return en vogue shortly.

4) more blending b/t hip-hop and R&B...for better or worse...as Ja Rule is steady cashing publishing checks for the J-Lo song, expect lots more emcees to start ghostwriting for R&B bammas...

5) the true hip-hop film movement will begin....yeah, yeah, I'm sure you liked "Breaking" when you were 8, but it ain't no "Godfather". Hip-hop is old enough to have seriously influenced a generation of filmmakers. Expect them to create a more organic blend of hip-hop and film (think "Boiler Room", the first step IMO).

6) Hip-hop goes political officially....I'm talking about cats endorsing candidates and even former performers running for office...it's gonna happen. Trust me.

Thoughtfully yours,

Interesting. I don't know about hip hoppers endorsing candidates though. Hip hop has never been "that" political. I can't see the conservative rich mofos who run everything allowing that to become a possibilty.

I would really like to see actually well written hip hop movies, but I'm not gonna hold my breath for it though. What is Boiler Room? I might need to check that out.

The focus in and of itself was not hip hop. Something like that would almost have to be a documentary. But, the movie was a representation of how hip hop manifests itself in real life.

is good. i think it's very good. i've been arguing this point on these boards for 2 years and one day i will do it conclusively. but not today.

Darren Aronofsky's films are hip-hop. he's a hip-hop fan and has said explicitly that this is what influences his working aesthetic. the pounding pace, the visual "sampling" of rapidly repeated images… Aronofsky has invented a new style that he calls "hip-hop montage." and people are catching on to this style.

Aronofsky has made some of the only true hip-hop films, IMO. Boyz N the Hood is basically a glorified afterschool special with a rap soundtrack. Menace II Society is a Goodfellas homage in a black urban setting.

what IS a hip-hop film? a film that stars rappers? that has a hip-hop soundtrack? a contemporary urban setting? I don't think so… I'd rather confer that honor upon films that actually translate the style of hip-hop to the visual medium.

This I disagree with. His 'new style' is basically what Coldcut have been doing with their videos and live shows for years. Granted he's adapted it for cinema (and I'm not disputing his filmaking abilities here) but the fact that he's given it a fucking name and accepted credit cheeses me off a bit.

fair enough.

but he never really said that he invented it anyway... he just gave it a name as far as mainstream filmmaking is concerned. i think he deserves a LITTLE credit for that... don't you? i mean, how many Oscar-nominated films can really brag of using hip-hop as a cinematic reference point?

Sorry I misinterpreted what you said as him making a claim. I won't deny for a second that he deserves a great deal of credit for the way he makes films, and if he continues to polish his style then he could be one of the greatest. I mean, I detested Pi for a lot of reasons, but thought RFAD was a massive improvement, in that it actually stirred me emotionally. I have a great deal of faith that his Batman will be superb, as it's the kind of subject matter to suit his current style.

My knee-jerk judgement of him as an arrogant prick has no bearing on my opinion of him artistically anyway.

"Boiler Room" with Vin Deisel, Ben Affleck, Nia Long (don't know the name of the lead actor)?

Not a bad flick, but how do you see this as a hip-hop film? Because of the vrious hip-hop joints played throughout?

I think the future of hiphop is with this style all the okayplayer type artists are taking it. I think hip hop will see a drastic change within the next couple of years. The whole cliche factor in modern comercial hip hop is exactly like hair bands in the 80's that shit is gonna have a fall out real quick. And who in hip hop right now can you relate most to the alternative rock that killed the hair bands lets see musicians who actually respect women and talk about shit that really matters. All that needs to happen is someone new has to come through this whole neo soul (i hate that term) hip hop community that has charisma. im not sure who could lead the way right now for a movement of this style hip hop the only two candidates i can think of are mos and common they are the only two emcees in this scene right now that have the presence to start any sort of movement for change in hip hop. but thats just me

To many white people already buy rap. When more white rappers get signed they will sell because their are more white people in the US and i'm sure there are more than enough white kids that listen to rap now that will support them. We only 12% dog, 12 fucking percent. Thats Crazy. They got more kids than we got people. They got more people 20 yrs old than we got total.

Black people will just have to come up with something new. Cause we will get rapped.

Hip-hop has another decade or two and then it will start to decline. I don't say this because I'm a pessimist, I say it because all musics decline. As the age set who were raised on hip-hop gives way to the age set that is raised on whatever's next, hip-hop too will decline.

Someone pointed to jazz as an example of something, but if anything jazz illustrates the life-cycle hip-hop can expect. Just as jazz rose to prominence and enjoyed decades at the top of the stack, so to has hip-hop. And just like jazz, hip-hop will decline to an after-thought. Tastes change and eventually they will leave hip-hop to the future crate-diggers and musicologists, just like change has left the past greats to us.

Peace,
Chris

will be runin shit in a min. I cant see it any other way.

Dont mention Eve to me cause she never spit a verse on the streets when the streets were hot when beanie got signed so i cant say she is the same caliber mc as the ones that just got signed.

Our only downfall is that there are to many pre-madonnas. But after them are pure spitters.

This chick is signed to Timberlands label. Ms. Jade. She on the ugly remix so u should be able to hear her. And she has a song like "Warning" it's not bangin like that but it's better than alot of shit. And she shows she can spit an interesting story.

The rest u probably never heard of unless u from philly.

Eilliot Ness: shittly name but he sick

J Rocka: a young bul kiss is tryin to sign, he sick on a young
bul flow.

This young bul Grant who rolled with J Rocka: he is inside beanies cover but i heard somebody shot him. He was only 16. Heard him spit live when my niggas battled J Rocka and like 10 dudes.

Lotto: I dont really like him but he is like fab with undeniable punchlines. He signed to Swiss.

B Cassidy: He mean, a bit of a pre-madonna. Also signed with Swiss. The best part of Larseny who are on that Ruff Ryder vol 2.

Dutch and Spade: U might of heard of them. Part of the Figgas. Dutch flow is sick, he kills snoops flow... current and old.

My niggas: They comin soon, just getting seasoned.

And to many young buls who spit and all have potential, about 30 of them.

And i cant see anyone spittin with a Philly nigga. Cause we all come at your life to your face.

Not to mention we all love spittin. Song be like 4 min with no course. Yall getting a snippit with Freeway.

adrenaline when beans wouldn't stop, same shit dice did on the lesson, same shit you hear from freeway all the time.

maybe ime biased, but that's three philly heads right there, and that's just how people rhyme, all the time.

the chick jade is ah-ite, the warning track is cool, but i need to hear different flows first.

But the lesson was how long ago?? and what tracks have u heard similar when a rapper spits for like 3 min no course??? Anit that many philly rappers in the industry and so far on most of the underground cd's that go around there are no more 16 bar spitters. More like 32 to 40 to 3 min.

Yeah the warning track is ight, it just shows she can do a story. But I think she killed the Ugly remix. Look for that.

- Live instrumentation. Esp. drums. Loops can only go so far.
The real beatmakers (JayDee, Madlib, Timbaland) are already realizing this and at least incorporating it into their sound. I don't see a bunch of imitation Roots bands but I do see the mix of beats and instruments getting very blurry.

Other than that the future looks bleak. This year is a scar on the culture of hiphop. Virtually nothing worth talking about. Even the albums that are mentioned Cannibal Ox, Cormega, Unspoken Heard, JayDee, Pete Rock, HiTek aren't going to be mentioned past this winter. Whether it's Ja Rule or Anticon I'm emphatically not feeling either. Hiphop really lost when middle ground MC's and producers like Large Pro, Brand Nubian, Mad Skillz, Ras Kass, etc. got lost in the mix and find it hard to even put out new material. It's sad to me, but then I see Mos and Kweli perform and I feel okay, even if I have to take a hiphop hiatus until someone I can count on comes back again.

One,
BTW
