fyi: nobody ever, EVER copped a gstarr album back in the day, took the shit home, listened + said "wow those beats were great but the emcee was lacking, it could've used some better rhyming"

niggas listened to the shit and said "wow, that shit was fire, i think i'll listen to the entire thing again"

that shit was never even a whisper or an afterthought until preme started producing extensively outside of the group (boom bap, illmatic, jeru, unbelievable) @ which point the niggas had ALREADY DROPPED FOUR ALBUMS OF CLASSIC/NEAR-CLASSIC MATERIAL

so dead that nonsense

the reason i fucked w/ 'ru hard back in the day was b/c he was one of the few cats that was nice w/o fitting into a particular character or archetype. almost everybody had a larger-than-life PERSONA --

rick was over-the-top cartoonish w/ the jewelry, wearing crowns and calling niggas "crumbs" and all that
kane was like a 70s barry white pimp nigga resurrected
g rap and cube were like some fucking black terminator niggas or some shit
chuck had that sort of malcolm x aura of austere unapproachability
and ra? shit, ra was like a fucking ancient egyptian. that nigga seemed like he wasn't even from this PLANET

but ru was kind of just a dude. looked and acted like niggas you knew. so he didn't have to worry abt stepping "outside the box" and losing cats, which gave him a certain amt of freedom that maybe a ra/kane/chuck/g rap didn't have.

dude could basically make every type jawn:

- bragging rappity-rap song
- street story narration song
- book-smart college nigga song
- black history song
- girl song
- gun-talk song
- "cops be on some bullshit" song
- "black ppl, we fuckin up + need to get our shit together" song
- "rep my neighborhood/borough" song
- "man, fuck these hoes" song
- "name-drop the old jazz heads" song
- pale horse/c-o-n-spiracy song

and it always came off w/ a degree of sincerity. never felt like he was contradicting/compromising himself or playing a role. very versatile cat in that regard. that's prolly his real legacy as an mc to me, beyond working w/ premo.

the voice and articulation -- self-explanatory

just a sharp emcee on a lot of different levels. i don't do that ranking shit (top 5, 15, 50, fuck does it matter?) but suffice it to say: an upper-echelon cat on catalog alone.

when you can drop a 2cd best of, and niggas are STILL debating shit that got left off, you're certified.

I think it was because of the above mentioned "persona w/o pretension" that Guru was one of the few rappers Momma Claw (R.I.P.) didn't freak about me listening to or watching on TV back then

(lmao, I remember one time I was watching Yo! MTV Raps and Kane's "I Get The Job Done" video was on and that part where he says "let me lick you all over" came up and she just made THE FACE)

I always admired it because when I copped a Gang Starr or Guru record I knew that I would be hearing some "real", relatable shit.
Guru has always been one of the most topical MCs in hiphop.

shit, I didn't even know dude's name was "Guru" until I got my first Gang Starr tape; I thought Guru was "Gang Starr".

the inherent truth in what you just laid out there but it's appreciated.

There's been a few (MANHOODLUM & mysp1200 particularly) fighting that battle here when it comes up as well, people got real reckless with it in recent years & the younger cats who didn't grow up on Gangstarr just started piggybacking that bullshit.

Acting like Guru isn't a legendary elite MC because of some newfangled bullshit people came up with ten years after he was already making classics is that bullshit.

And the 'Gangstarr would have been better with Jeru' people kill me too.

I think even GangStarr fans have taken Guru for granted because of what OP said. You just expected GURU to be Guru and Primo to be Primo. They were like a steady vehicle that never gave you any problems and lasted for years while still getting a curious eye from the females. Guru was like that wise older but much younger than your parents uncle.

were the crazy behind the scenes stories that resulted in classic jams:

Just To Get a Rep: Guru was robbed in BK
Now You're Mine: Guru and Primo had got into a fistfight, the rhymes were directed at Primo (the hoops metaphor were cuz it was originally recorded for Above the Rim sdtk)
JFK 2 LAX: Guru arrested for gun posession

I remember reading their source cover story when HTE was coming out, and Guru saying "we throw fists, then we hug like brothers"

There's some details about it in Ronin Ro's 1st book. It has the unedited Source cover story from 1994. The Source edited the article into more of a fluff piece.

I know one of the things it mentioned was Guru being irritated at how Primo's outside production popularity was making him the star of the group.

i seem to remember reading an interview where they said the process was:

- guru thinks of a title, gives it to preem
- preem makes a beat that fits the spirit of the title
- guru writes to the beat

i always thought this was an ill process

(it also explains why when the title is unique, the beat is wild....see the question remains, etc)

can anyone find any interviews where they discuss this?

95. "Guru the producer > Super Pooper Solar"
In response to Reply # 0

Guru rarely made beats for other folks, but on his own projects you would find some shit that was credited to Guru. The early Jazzmatazz records, when it wasn't Premier or someone like that @ the helms, it was Guru himself.

One of my favorites is Bahamadia's "Wordplay" (he also did the song, "Total Wreck", I think it was called.

his first Jazzmatazz album had some fire, notably that joint w/N'Dea Davenport (loved that Crusaders flip, grew up on that song).

if you tuned in for the Ill Kid Records compilation (where GURU pulled a "J.S. Theracon" and referred to himself as Baldhead Slick), the demo version of Group Home's "Livin' Proof" which was called "So Called Friends" featuring Big Shug on the hook was ill. It was a dusty, tape-hissy loop of some Ohio Players joint (Premier yapped it for a "Hard To Earn" castoff that got bootlegged) over some good ol' "Synthetic Substitution" drums. Fire. There was also "Momentum" w/Big Shug that was dope, as well as the PROPANE AND PROPANE ACCESSORIES joint "Life", which was Guru + M.O.P. + Stikken Moov.

On some Gangstarr albums, there were joints where Guru would do version 1 of the beat (like provide the loop or someshit) and Premier would do the drums. Those beats were often labelled as "produced by Guru, co-produced by DJ Premier". 2 such beats that come to mind are "Code of the Streets" (HARD TO EARN) and "Make 'Em Pay" (MOMENT OF TRUTH). The former is a bonafide Gang Starr classic, the latter is known mostly for Krumb Snatcha's verse. Both were dope.

Never figured out why Guru stopped doing beats. Maybe he lost his knack. Maybe he was ghost producing. But I felt if he had shit like that at his disposal he could defn. survive w/o Premier.

His first 3 Jazzamatazz albums are essential listening if you like his style of rap, and the third is especially OKP-approved (that Roots joint is perhaps one of the best things the Roots ever did IMO).

I think the story went, at least with "She Knows What she Wants" and "Make Em Pay" in particular, is that Guru picked the samples and chopped them and Primo did scratches/drums by helping him program or picking the sounds
and its of note that the two samples that had to be cleared were the two Guru did

Flow was GURU was at his sharpest on S.I.T.A.

and even til this day he step some of his hottest bars on that on.

It just that Premo upgraded and got iller with his production so much on D.O. people think that's always when GURU started to bring it....but dude was always been nice on the mic.

Go listen to "Step Into The Arena" and tell me I'm lying.

In response to Reply # 0

when i hear GURU's voice over a Premo beat it is the quintessential sound of NY.
it's unmistakable. it reminds me of a whole time and place in the city.

i've been thinking about it. though Jay, Nas, BIG are some of the best to ever do it,
when i really think of NY Rap i think of Gang Starr, Jeru, Black Moon, Mobb Deep,
Smif N Wessun, OC, Organized. .

there's a few groups that come to mind when I think of NY Hip Hop and they're one of the handful because they didn't try to take their sound to other places, they made other places come to them
like if you think about Duke Ellington, he didn't make any attempts to get into fusion and you can't knock him for it
I don't recall anyone telling Son House to play electric

one of the last albums that really screamed "New York" in the same way to me was the U.N.'s 2004 outing UN OR U OUT.

I think prior to that there was a bit of "universal" sound in rap. When rap started to get popular outside of NY, it caused many of the artists coming out of the boroughs to really make their sound "regional".

Check it out y’all, here’s an extremely dope 80 minute ALL Gang Starr mix that I cooked up Live in the mix on my two 1200’s and Rane mixer using all original vinyl!! And in case you’re wondering, yes, I was inspired to make this mix because of Guru’s current health condition. Check it out though, I made sure to feature songs from every one of Gang Starr’s 7 albums, soundtracks and 12” singles. There are NO features in this mix, it’s Guru on the M.I.C. and DJ Premier on the beat. Also, each song is played in full and blended/scratched to perfection. Enjoy...

while there were some embarrassing/funny moments from Guru ("degweez/that's horrible" © Young H) I feel that album still highlights why Guru is the best MC over a Premier beat

"Zonin'" is a Gang Starr classic, bar none
the title track, "Deadly Habitz", "Sabotage", "Skills" all sound like "Gang Starr". Some of those beats to me are better than those on MOMENT OF TRUTH

the only track that really "sucked" for me was "The Militia Part III" -- mostly because Guru spit those lines better on a freestyle
