"What you think about North Carolina hip hop?"
Sun Oct-28-07 10:53 PM by Shade

North Carolina has always had a rich music history and I feel that state is on the come up in hip hop with the Justus League crew, K-Hill, Shelly B, Kaze, Supastition, Kooley High, M1 Platoon, J. Bully, ect, and production wise 9th Wonder, E. Jones, DJ Forge, Black Jeruz, Khrysis, Jah Freedom, K-Hill (he produces too), ect. I also feel that middle east/mid atlantic movement they have with VA, DC, and MD. How do you feel about NC hip hop?

It kinda hipped me to the fact that others in this area are hip to and surprisingly enthusiastic about NC hip hop, The Justus League, Supa, DJ DR, etc and not just the handful of us who all end up at the same events.

However, I do remember a time in the mid 90's when WPEG (97.9 FM)would play a track by 2 local acts at 8pm and have callers call in on a weekly basis to "Kiss/Diss" it. Needless to say, shit ain't goin down now.

now it's just a battle between two singles that are already in the rotation. There aren't any local artists in it anymore. 97.5 basically had to give Little Brother a few spins after the 4.5 mics in The Source.

I swear, their still trying to push this whole "Crunk City" thing on that station and they couldn't sound more fake. And it's jacked up because half of the niggas in NC really would respond to rappers like Phonte before someone like Petey Pablo.

Truth be told though, I'm shocked when I hear Kweli on the radio, so I know I'd be shitfaced if they played LB.

From what I get from my visits to NC about all them niggas would respond to Phonte before Petey it's maybe your radio stations being mainstream dickriders riding on whats hot (same with my state, SC radio). I see more influences from up north in carolina hip hop then down south, maybe it's because we're in the middle of the east coast between the north and south along with VA, DC, and MD which is why they have the middle east movement.

And, this is also the reason why I don't listen to the radio.

Honestly there is a lot of talent in NC but speakin for Durham these are some of the most NON-SUPPORTIVE, jealous and hatin ass muhfuckas I have ever seen in my life. Cats from Durham are some of the most closed minded fake assholes I've ever encountered. I'm definately not shitting on the Bull City cause I'm born and bred but it's a goddamn shame that we really don't support our own.

It doesn't seem like many people know about them either... I think it's because they are on Trekky which is more of an indie rock type label.

Baltimore is the same. Think about it, if everyone supported their hometown artists, especially a group like LB, they'd do at least like 100,000 at home alone.

Always expect that hate b/c everyone else wants your spot.

I remember when B Rich got signed off that Whoa Now song, by the way that song was on the radio every hour and mixtapes were selling with the song on it, you'd think the city was backing him, dude debuted at like 10K sold.

And people HATED on that dude, I mean, he was wack, but still, you feel like other artists would at least support someone opening up doors, yeah right.

And folks complain about hate, no radio play, yadda yadda on the local level. But as far as radio, that shit ain't for no local folks anyway, they don't have a responsibility to any local artist, their priority is their ad buyers.

Anyhow, the point is that local hate is every local scene until that shit just blows up like Miami or something, until then, niggaz in NC gon hate LB cause they want their spot.

Check the myspace links I just posted that's just a few of the talents there. God I wish Petey never came out and gave us a bad first impression hell I wish Timbaland didn't bring him out period. Dude was nothing but a ATL dickriding rapper in a carolina body. Small World he's dope though, he def. knows about the middle east movement he even tells it in interviews.

Marley Marl found Lords of the Underground at Shaw U in NC. From there is where they blew up.

Dres & Lawnge met in high school in Sanford NC & formed the group. To hear Dres (who lives in Charlotte) tell it, there was nothing to do in Sanford except HipHop. It has been several years since I've hung out with Lawnge (the last time was to watch a Tyson fight), but back when everyone used to b-boy at a place called Sportsworld (and later The Rink) he was called Shorty Doo-Wop and was as NC as anyone else. Neither of them deny their NC roots.

**funny thing about NC cats - being mid Atlantic, there has always been an authenticity/identity issue here. We're not so southern as Georgia, Texas, or Florida and then again we're not NY either. Cats would often claim some NY roots or status as badges of authenticity.

It is why we can have groups like Yaggfu, Little Brother, and Petey Pablo and not have issues with the dynamics of them. NC takes its sonic cues from all over.

It is comedy though. My friend Damu claimed Far Rockaway ever since I've known him, and he grew up in Garner NC since age 5 or so.

It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at © Rakim.

I live in Miami Beach now...but I'm old (LOL).

NC's claiming of the South is fairly recent. It wasn't a note of pride for a looooooooooong time. All the good HipHop early on came from NY & LA. I remember feeling sneaky about listening UGK in high school.

HipHop started for me in 1980 listening to my older brother's mixtapes with Afrika Bam's "Planet Rock", "Looking For The Perfect Beat", etc. I thought Kurtis Blow was king (The Breaks & Baaaaaaasss-ket-balllllllllllll). I remember being geeked about Run DMC coming out. They were the "new school". LOL

I remember the Fresh Fest where Russell Simmons visited Shaw U & got shot. He vowed to never come to NC again.

I remember the crowd fighting & chasing Rakim & Eric B offstage in Rocky Mount for lip synching a BS show.

The first time the Roots played in NC, I & two friends (Hunter & Dave) brought them to Chapel Hill (DYWM?) just came out (April of 1996 I think). We got Tajj from 7th Tribe to open up for them. I was so drunk after the show that I told Hub I could out play him on bass.

don't be fkn evil.

This was the Cat's Cradle show right? If so I was so PISSED that night cause I couldn't get off of work to see them.

Oh yeah what about Mark Sparks the producer. I got an old compliation CD he put out back in 1996 called "KAKALAKA RAW" lots of talent on that joint. I think he was from Charlotte if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah we aint deep south but we are below the Mason-Dixie so we are definately considered south.

It might be below the dixie line but it along with VA is culturally shifting away from the south due to the MILLIONS of transplants moving there each year. MD and DC are below the dixie line too and was not too long ago considered southern but due to the many transplants moving there not many still considers them southern today and is now culurally mid atlantic (geographically the carolinas, VA, DC, and MD are already mid atlantic). The same is happening to the carolinas and VA.

I lived in NC from 90-98 and attended NCCU. The hip-hop scene was strong. Cats had radio access and were allowed to get on and freestyle or do radio promos. Cats I ran into or knew during that priod:

Wink Moody (K 97.5)
DVS (K97.5)
Big Rob/Earthquake (NCCU)
Trees of a Different Soil
Lords Of the Underground (Shaw U)
Stylez and Phases (group from NY and NJ, attended NCCU, notable member porn star John E. Depth . . . LOL)
Yaggfu Front (NCCU)
AG (was signed to Capitol records but never released an album/ NCCU)
Born (NCCU)
7th Tribe
Troupe (Greensboro)
Big Delph
Devron (producer)
Knotty-head (R.I.P.)
The Nomadz (NCCU)

Only LOTUG and Yaggfu made noise, but only Yaggfu repped NC out of the two. I remember everyone was hyped when Trees and Yaggfu hosted Rap City. Most of these artist were on the same vibe (lyrics and Boom-bap). Big ups to LB and the Justus League for breaking through (somewhat)

Damn, I forgot another NCCU-head, Mike Flowers(Mike City) and his group Choice. They had a song out in 90 or 91 called "I Love it when you Smile" My bad Mike, I still got the 12inch!!

Also producer Mark Sparks repped Greensboro.

you can find people like some of those on your list in any state. You got to look and find. But I think Kaze is dope. So is E Jones, Khrysis, DJ Forge. Have yet to hear M-1 Platoon...Kooley High?!?, they are getting better. Rhaposdy is better now under 9th's direction I will admit. Supa is cool too.

Coming from MD and always visiting NC during the summers back in the day (80's-90's)...I've always liked the underground scene, because it actually was more diverse than what we would have here in B-more...I used to even love those Wax Master Torey pause mixes on Durham radio...I would record them and bring the pause mixes back to MD, and my hop hop buddies would fiend over them...

I love listening to anything Justis League...I pray that LB can open more doors for the NC scene so the industry will appreciate the talent from the Tar Heel State...

Yo,

I'm in Greenville and have been here since 95. Hip hop scene used to be great with Hip Hop night at Peasant's. Merlin and Set-One, Son of Sam, Imperial, Dean, Supa (then known as Blackmel, with the Grassroots Organization, Soul, Logic, I'm sure I'm missing alot of people. Crazy house parties. The scene has really suffered because of a lack of quality venues. People are still doint their thing, but have grown up and mostly moved on. I used to try to put on shows, bringing in J-league, and Supa, K-Hill, etc... Hit me up if you are in Greenville and want to connect.

Another little know NC connection to hip-hop. Pete DJ Jones one of the original NY DJ's that was mentor to Flash, was originally from Raleigh.
I heard another rumor, but don't know if it is true, that one of the guys in Camp Lo was originally from NC. I know they live here now, but not sure where they are from originally. I haven't heard the Bizzie Boys mentioned.

other group members recognized that lojic as being an amazing lyricist. I haven't heard his newer stuff so I'll have to look him up on myspace. I did hear some of Tay's new material — he's still bringing heat. MSTK's punchlines are untouchable and she has a great voice. Hack's mic skills are slept on but he's more than a just a great producer. And of course Lovejoy was *that* dude.

The follow-up to Spinfinity, Out of Control is worth checkin' too.

I was going to Cat's Cradle when it was still in Chapel Hill near the post office on Franklin. I remember catch ATCQ when it moved farther down Franklin (before it moved to Carrboro). I put on a few shows there when they moved to their current location. To this day, chapel hill is one of my favorite cities to see a show.

lil album. one cut on there, 'suspended animation' was stellar.

i know the apple juice kid went off and he on some drum and bass / electronica shit now, right? he was the drummer. they were out of chapel hill - i reviewed their cd back circa Illadelph times.

when i was still doing music reviews for the indy and before i got my column. (and pretending to know what in the fuck was going on in the local scene).

i big upped the underground 88 cats at ncsu, too.

don't let this area fool you, though.

the triangle been 'on the verge' forever. both in hip hop and indie rock. this area is eternally destined to be *this* close to blowing up.

lotta damn talent, tho. i think it has to do w/ the fact that there are so many colleges. lots of cross pollination.

that never did shit for music in maryland, tho.

peace & blessings,

x.

Most of that sound you talking about gets play in NYC more than NC & SC gives it, it's mostly considered just plain old good underground hip-hop cause the radio in the south considers rap music from NC Petey Pablo type stuff or just plain down south or crunk music.

I don't know if these mofos are still around. The only one I know personally was Kenny aka Kinetix aka Supreme. He used to make beats for me and my boys when we were trying to rap lol. They were in Unsigned Hype in The Source around '96.

so forgive me if these have been mentioned....

I graduated from Elon in '01 and grew VERY fond of NC hip hop acts such as...

Celinski
Mr. Rozzi
Sankofa (now disbanded but dope!)
DJ Pez
DJ Pro
Somate (disbanded....a little 3 piece from UNC)
Apple Juice Kid

More to come.....

Those were the original cats — the DJs that were putting it down EARLY. They were really the one that 1st put hip hop on in NC. Tory and Wink when they were on WKNC from midnight to 3am, we'd have the tapes rolling when we went to bed, wake up to flip that shit, and wait with baited breath til we got home from school the next day and could finally listen to was we'd recorded. This was starting in like the EARLY 80's... maybe '81 to '85.

Nabbs, Montique, Smokehouse and my main man Keith Ellis were also spreading the music early on.

Speaking of Old Farm, don't forget Cool Jazz-ski and the Flamingo Kid (shout out to Schoolly Jay). Then, there was Antonio making those mixtapes back in the day. Of course, MC Frosty and her brother (I forgot his name) representing River Forest.

I remember going to DJ Nabs parties over on Obie Drive back in 1986/87 at Boobie's house. It's been 20 years, Breeze. Can you believe that?

Remember "Touch Y'all" featuring Sadat X. which might have been produced by Mark The Spark, anyway he had few 12inch singles but never got a chance to release an album.

I read a blog of his a while back which said he's still rapping and plan on releasing that unreleased gem & of course new stuff as well.
