"The Official iSlate/Tableau/MacWorld 2010/UnicornTears Post"

It's time.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/26/apples-islate-and-other-rumors-that-have-given-its-stock-a-ho/

The Apple tablet rumors are at a fever pitch, yet again. Depending on what you've read, it's all but confirmed that the company's got a January 26th event scheduled at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, CA. All this, of course, with nary a word or comment from Cupertino HQ, and without the context that this trend has come and gone ad nauseam, both with the tablet and before with the years of lead-up to the iPhone. Here's the latest bit: MacRumors has dug up information about a Delaware-based company, Slate Computing, LLC, that was founded in November 2006 and owns the trademark "iSlate," the signatory of said trademark being Apple's Senior Trademark Specialist Regina Porter. Given that Apple owns "iSlate" trademark in Europe and that it's allegedly pulled similar stunts with a "fake" company and the iPhone trademark, sure, we could buy into this being just a dummy corporation... but does it really confirm an impending tablet that'll be called the "iSlate?" Not at all. We wouldn't be surprised if Apple has done this for numerous other trademarks, either to give itself more options or to prevent others from trying to manufacture products under those names. (Slate Computing, LLC also happens to own the "Magic Slate" trademark, just so you know.) Also bought up in 2006? The domain iSlate.com, which again according to MacRumors (with help form Mark Gurman of AppleRejectedMe.com) was apparently and briefly shown to be owned by Apple at some point during 2007. Food for thought, but trust us, you don't want to confuse hearsay for concrete fact.

Which brings us to December 24th, where we see a statistically significant uptick in Apple's stock value. Seeing as the fiscals were released back in late October along with the last refresh of hardware (Mac Pro specs notwithstanding), it seems everyone decided to spend their holiday bonuses on some Apple shares. Now, we're not claiming to be professionals here by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems a lot of the activity here can be attributed to the recent flux of rumors. Jason Schwarz of The Street has an interesting take on it, which if you've got 15 minutes to kill should be worth your time to browse through.

The slates just keep coming. Now MacRumors is reporting that Apple has filed a trademark for a device called "Magic Slate."
The term was categorized broadly to cover computers, computer peripherals, computer hardware and much more. "Magic Slate" adopts a similar naming convention to the recently released multi-touch Magic Mouse from Apple. It's not hard to imagine that a "Magic Slate" would be a multi-touch peripheral for computers, much like the multi-touch iGesture Pad released by Fingerworks before their acquisition by Apple.
Back in October a multi-touch trackpad was rumored to be making an appearance but it never materialized. If Apple does still plan on releasing the device, it would fit in nicely with the "Magic"-peripheral theme. Now, where's that trademark for "Magic Keyboard"?

The Tablet

Thursday, 31 December 2009

Another former Apple executive who was there at the time said the tablets kept getting shelved at Apple because Mr. Jobs, whose incisive critiques are often memorable, asked, in essence, what they were good for besides surfing the Web in the bathroom.

—”Just a Touch Away, the Elusive Tablet PC”, The New York Times, 4 October 2009

Here’s the thimbleful of information I have heard regarding The Tablet (none of which has changed in six months): The Tablet project is real, it has you-know-who’s considerable undivided attention, and everyone working on it has dropped off the map. I don’t know anyone who works at Apple who doubts these things; nor do I know anyone at Apple who knows a whit more. I don’t know anyone who’s seen the hardware or the software, nor even anyone who knows someone else who has seen the hardware or software.

The cone of silence surrounding the project is, so far as I can tell, complete.1

The situation is uncannily similar to the run-up preceding the debut of the original iPhone in January 2007, including many of the same engineers and software teams at Apple — such as those who built the iPhone Mail, Calendar, and Safari apps — disappearing into a black hole. The iPhone remained a secret until Steve Jobs took it out of his jeans pocket on stage at Macworld Expo. All of which is to say that what follows is my conjecture. Pure punditry, not one of those smarmy “predictions” where I know full well in advance what’s going to happen.

I have a thousand questions about The Tablet’s design. What size is it? There’s a big difference between, say, 7- and 10-inch displays. How do you type on it? With all your fingers, like a laptop keyboard? Or like an iPhone, with only your thumbs? If you’re supposed to watch video on it, how do you prop it up? Holding it in your hands? Flat on a table seems like the wrong angle entirely; but a fold-out “arm” to prop it up, à la a picture frame, seems clumsy and inelegant. If it’s just a touchscreen tablet, how do you protect the screen while carrying it around? If it folds up somehow, how is it not just a laptop — why not put a hardware keyboard on the part that folds up to cover the display? (Everyone I know at Apple refers to it as “The Tablet”, but so far as I can tell, that’s because that’s what everyone calls it, not because anyone knows that it actually even is, physically, a tablet. And “The Tablet” most certainly is not the product name.) If it’s too big to fit in a pants pocket, how are you supposed to carry it around? And but if it does fit in a pants pocket, how is it bigger enough than an iPod Touch to justify existing? And so on.

But there’s one question at the top of the list, the answer to which is the key to answering every other question. That question is this: If you already have an iPhone and a MacBook; why would you want this?

The epigraph I used to start this piece — the bit about Steve Jobs demanding that a tablet be useful for more than just reading on the can — indicates that Apple will release nothing without such an answer. I agree that such an answer is essential.

Successful new gadgets always seem to occupy a clearly defined place alongside, or replacing, existing devices. The Flip filled a previously empty niche for a small, cheap, simple video camera. How was the iPod better than existing portable music players? It fit 1,000 songs in your pocket, with a fun interface that let you find them easily. Why buy an iPhone to replace your existing mobile phone? Because there was a clear need for a modern handheld general-purpose computer.

But how much room is there between an iPhone (or iPod Touch) and a MacBook (or other laptop computer, running Windows or Linux or whatever)? What’s the argument for owning all three?

“I’d use it on the couch and lying in bed” is not a good answer. You can already use your iPhone or MacBook on the couch and in bed. It strikes me as foolish to market a multi-hundred-dollar device that people are expected to leave on their coffee table.

“It’s a Kindle killer” is not a good answer. If you think Apple is making a dedicated device for reading e-books and articles, you’re thinking too small. As profoundly reticent as Steve Jobs is regarding future Apple products, when he does speak, he’s often surprisingly revealing. David Pogue asked him about the Kindle a few months ago:

A couple of years ago, pre-Kindle, Mr. Jobs expressed his doubts that e-readers were ready for prime time. So today, I asked if his opinions have changed.

“I’m sure there will always be dedicated devices, and they may have a few advantages in doing just one thing,” he said. “But I think the general-purpose devices will win the day. Because I think people just probably aren’t willing to pay for a dedicated device.”

He said that Apple doesn’t see e-books as a big market at this point, and pointed out that Amazon.com, for example, doesn’t ever say how many Kindles it sells. “Usually, if they sell a lot of something, you want to tell everybody.”

Of course, this is the same Steve Jobs who back in January 2008 told The New York Times’s John Markoff:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

One could reasonably argue that the “people don’t read” comment, taken at face value, suggests that Apple has no interest in that market, period.

I, however, would square the two remarks as follows: Not enough people read to make it worth creating a dedicated device that is to reading what the original iPod was to music. (Everyone, for practical definitions of “everyone”, listens to music.) But e-reading as one aspect among several for a general-purpose computing device — well, that’s something else entirely.

The pre-Touch iPod was (and remains) an enormous success. It changed the music industry and rejuvenated Apple. But it was and remains a dedicated device; originally focused on audio, now capable of the sibling feature of video.

The iPhone, on the other hand, was conceived and has flourished as a general-purpose handheld computing platform. It was not introduced as such publicly, and is not pitched as such in Apple’s marketing, but clearly that’s what it is. The iPhone was described by Jobs in his on-stage introduction as three devices in one: “a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, a breakthrough Internet communicator”. Thus, it was clear what people would want to do with it: watch videos, listen to music, make phone calls, surf the web, do email.

The way Apple made one device that did a credible job of all these widely-varying features was by making it a general-purpose computer with minimal specificity in the hardware and maximal specificity in the software. And, now, through the App Store and third-party developers, it does much more: serving as everything from a game player to a medical device.

Do I think The Tablet is an e-reader? A video player? A web browser? A document viewer? It’s not a matter of or but rather and. I say it is all of these things. It’s a computer.

And so in answer to my central question, regarding why buy The Tablet if you already have an iPhone and a MacBook, my best guess is that ultimately, The Tablet is something you’ll buy instead of a MacBook.

I say they’re swinging big — redefining the experience of personal computing.

It will not be pitched as such by Apple. It will be defined by three or four of its built-in primary apps. But long-term, big-picture? It will be to the MacBook what the Macintosh was to the Apple II.

I am not predicting that Apple is phasing out the Mac. (On the contrary, I’ve heard that Mac OS X 10.7 is on pace for a developer release at WWDC in June.) Like all Apple products, The Tablet will do less than we expect but the things it does do, it will do insanely well. It will offer a fraction of the functionality of a MacBook — but that fraction will be way more fun. The same myopic feature-checklist-obsessed critics who dismissed the iPhone will focus on all that The Tablet doesn’t do and declare that this time, Apple really has fucked up but good. The rest of us will get in line to buy one.

The Mac is, and will remain, Apple’s answer to what you use to do everything.

The Tablet, I say, is going to be Apple’s new answer to what you use for personal portable general computing.

Put another way, let’s say instead of a MacBook and an iPhone, you’ve got an iMac and an iPhone, but you also want a portable secondary computer. Today, that portable from Apple (portable as opposed to the iPhone’s mobile) is a MacBook. With The Tablet, you’ll have the option of a device that will more closely resemble the iPhone than the iMac in terms of concept and the degree of technical abstraction.

THE TABLET OS

The original 1984 Mac didn’t abstract away the computer — it made the computer itself elegant, simple, and understandable. Very, very little was hidden from the typical user. Mac OS X is vastly more complex technically and conceptually, as it must be due to the vastly increased complexity and capability of today’s hardware. But Mac OS X has always tried to have it both ways: a veneer of simplicity that doesn’t cover the entire surface of the system. The user-exposed file system is a prime example. On the 1984 Mac, the entire file system was exposed, but the entire file system fit on a 400 KB floppy disk. On Mac OS X, the /System/Library/ folder, one of many exposed fiddly sections of the file system browsable in the Finder, contains over 90,000 items, not one of which a typical user should ever need to see or touch.

The iPhone OS offers a complete computing abstraction. Under the hood, it’s just as complex as Mac OS X. On the surface, though, it is even more simple and elegant than the original Mac. No technical complexity is exposed. Hierarchy is minimized. It relegates the file system to a developer-level technology rather than a user-level technology. (Did you know the file system on iPhones is case sensitive?)

But so while I think The Tablet’s OS will be like the iPhone OS, I don’t think it will be the iPhone OS. Carved from the same OS X core, yes, but with a new bespoke UI designed to be just right for The Tablet’s form factor, whatever that form factor will be.

One common prediction I disagree with is that The Tablet will simply be more or less an iPod Touch with a much bigger display. But in the same way that it made no sense for Apple to design the iPhone OS to run Mac software, it makes little sense for a device with a 7-inch (let alone larger) display to run software designed for a 3.5-inch display.

The iPhone OS user interface was not designed in the abstract. It’s entirely about real-world usability, and very much designed specifically around the physical size of the device itself. The size and spacing of tappable targets are designed with the size of human thumb- and fingertips in mind. More importantly, the whole thing is designed so that it can be used one-handed. Even an adult with relatively small hands can go from one corner to the other with their thumb, holding the iPhone in one hand.

Mac OS X apps couldn’t run on an iPhone display because they simply wouldn’t fit, and the parts that did fit would contain buttons and other UI elements that were far too small to be used. Running iPhone software on a much larger display presents the opposite problem: it’s not that the UI couldn’t be scaled to fill the screen, it’s that it would be a waste to do so.

A 7-inch display isn’t twice the size of an iPhone’s, it’s four times bigger in surface area. I’m not sure even Shaquille O’Neal could hold a 7-inch iPod Touch in one hand and swipe from corner to corner with his thumb. Why would Apple stretch a UI designed to afford for one-handed use on 3.5-inch displays to cover a 7-inch (or larger) display that couldn’t possibly be used one-handed? If Apple’s starting with a hardware size where the iPhone OS can’t be used one-handed, then trust me, they’re designing a new interaction model.

Apple is not in the business of making monolithic OSes that they cram down your throat on as many widely-varying devices as possible. Apple is in the business of making complete products, for which they craft derivative OSes to fit each product. There is a shared core OS. There is not a shared core UI.2

If you’re thinking The Tablet is just a big iPhone, or just Apple’s take on the e-reader, or just a media player, or just anything, I say you’re thinking too small — the equivalent of thinking that the iPhone was going to be just a click wheel iPod that made phone calls. I think The Tablet is nothing short of Apple’s reconception of personal computing.

“Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think big.”
—DANIEL BURNHAM, CHICAGO ARCHITECT. (1846-1912)

The only known breakage of the cone of silence around Apple’s tablet project I’m aware of are the meetings Apple has held with publishing industry executives. The way these meetings work, from what I’ve gathered, is as follows. Apple brings no hardware. They bring no software. They show no mockups. They do not even completely acknowledge that they’re making a new device. The people from Apple simply say something along the lines of, “If we were to create a new platform for book/magazine/newspaper content, would you be interested in offering your content for it?” Apple is, without any question in my mind, courting book and periodical publishers. But that doesn’t mean Apple trusts any of them enough to reveal or describe in detail what it is they’re actually working on. ↩

That said, I would not be surprised to find out that The Tablet uses UIKit, a.k.a. Cocoa Touch, as its programming API. I don’t think the same apps will run as-is on both OSes, but I do think you might use the same set of APIs to write apps for both platforms. (Or, perhaps iPhone apps could run as less-than-full-screen widgets on the larger tablet display.) ↩

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/major-apple-announcement-coming-january-27th-devs-already-wor/

According John Paczkowski over at All Things D, Apple is planning a "major product announcement" for Wednesday, January 27th -- not the 26th as we've heard in previous reports. Additionally, the French site Mac4Ever says developers have been given a beta of the iPhone OS 4 SDK which includes a "simulator" for reformatting / scaling applications to a new, tablet-sized screens. Here at Engadget, we can confirm that sources very familiar with the situation over in Cupertino have been given info about a tablet heading for launch at the end of January, which will -- in fact -- require reformatting and resizing for (we assume)... yep, its new screen size and resolution. As far as details, they're pretty scarce right now, but you can probably begin preliminary salivating and / or player hatin' as it relates to new Apple hardware. We'll have more info as it becomes available, but for now, stay tuned.

And def cool to use. But really when you think about it, the only extra feature to any PC was the ability to write on screen. And for someone with as terrible handwriting and drawing skills such as myself, that's no advantage.

I work in a field (science) which sometimes require me to go to conferences. It would be nice to have a device that works like this that I could easily whip out to jot down notes during a presentation. Then later I could bring it out again when it is time to give my presentation.

It would be nice to have a device like this that I could take on the road like PC users. If this exists I wonder what they will do about storage.

if it's not something I can really use or would want, I'd rather Apple not waste their time on it.

Then again, since I already got a Windows 7 netbook, it would be kinda pointless to buy an Apple one as well, so I guess it might as well be something I wouldn't want anyway.

for recipes/tv, nav/music, movies, remote/web respectively.

It'll also function as an e-book reader of course, and have the entire iphone app catalog at launch I'm guessing.

I'd like it as a small side monitor for my computer, showing just AIM and iTunes next to my main display or something.

It definitely has all kinds of potential.

I just feel it finds itself in between smartphones and conventional laptops with not a big enough tangible advantage from either. Unless I suppose you have some sort of niche interest. But I mean even in a kitchen, on a train etc. both an iPhone or a laptop can let you watch movies/look up recipes.....

I have a habit of completely fucking up predictions on this kind of thing. I remember saying touchscreen phones would never work. So I'm almost certainly wrong again, but I'm still not on board yet.

Anyway as someone said, it'll be real exciting. Something for everybody to either love or hate passionately.

this will be the ONLY way to get magazine's, books and newspapers pretty soon. add to that pretty much anything you can do on an iPhone (music, movies, games, internet, text, phone, apps), and you will not carry around a phone (and possibly a laptop) again. you will only use a laptop or desktop at the office.

In fact I'm definitely not the first, someone must have thought of this. But this will succeed. Every school and college will have a tablet for every student in no time. The amount of re-printing of text books for new editions is insane (and an insane waste of money). For that reason alone these do have a big market.

there are still schools with textbooks that are 20 years out of date.
might have a bigger impact in colleges yeaaaaars from now

btw. felt like mentioning that Uruguay is the first country to ensure
that every school-child has a computer.

oh, look. the one-laptop per child project is now one tablet per child:

"The XO-3, as it is known, is a slim-line touchscreen tablet PC.

"One Laptop per Child (OLPC) said it would be "available in 2012" and
would cost "well below $100". "

Where computers will not only be affordable but completely essential. Schools in the West will all have computers for their students, no matter how fucked up funding/policy is. And if that happens, I can see tablets taking over for that purpose.

As for Uruguay, I didn't know that. Pretty cool, though at what cost? I dunno, basically I have literally zero expertise in Uruguayan school funding!

but the cost of printing textbooks is negligible compared to the cost of licensing the cost. I doubt it cost more than $5 to actually print a textbook.

LMFAO

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Apple-iSlate-specifications-revealed-article-a_8530.html

This article contains unofficial information.
You know that people interested in the mobile industry are talking about a presumable Apple tablet right now. You also know that this tablet may be called iSlate and could be announced on January 26. However, you do not know what the specifications of the device are. Well, that’s about to change… now.

Images revealing the Apple iSlate specs
We have just received some images of what seem to be internal Apple documents, revealing the Apple iSlate specifications. And what specs these are!

A 7.1-inch multitouch display with fingerprint-resistant coating
2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor
2GB DDR3 RAM UP TO 8GB FTW?
120GB hard drive
built-in projector…

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/image.php?m=Articles.Images&f=name&id=27156&caption=&title=Image+from+%22Apple+iSlate+specifications+revealed%22&kw=

actually you can check the list yourselves. We cannot be sure if that information is to be trusted, but if we are lucky enough… boy, won’t the iSlate just rock?! To top it off, according to these docs, Apple’s tablet will run on the new Mac OS X 10.7 Clouded Leopard platform that will allow for touchscreen functionality and will bring a new widget-based homescreen. So, it now seems that the only thing left to do is hope this info is real and that the device will sport a 3G receiver so you can surf the web anytime you want. We already have our fingers crossed for a January 26 announcement of the Apple iSlate.

Thanks, anonymous tipster!

In response to Reply # 41

Perhaps it will be a mini projector, so if you put it up near a wall the whole tablet will be a keyboard (or whatever kind of input device) and the projected image will become the screen. This would be especially good for writing a lot, as otherwise you gotta lean forward too much and it will hurt your neck.

At least it will probably be there to allow for 2 screens, for whatever use you might have for that. I can't see it being a full blown projector capable of doing slides for a whole lecture theatre. The lens would be too big and too expensive.

forget about it simply for battery issues. Sure you could plug it in inside a lecture theatre, but they can't make a portable device with a key feature needing a plug socket.

In fact speaking of batteries, that's one of my biggest issues with a tablet. These things are gonna last like 30 minutes. Until those future batteries we always hear about but never emerge finally do come on the market, these things won't do what they say on the tin. A 7" screen alone is gonna eat power for breakfast.

Microsoft and H.P. to Reveal Slate PC Ahead of Apple
By ASHLEE VANCE

It could be one of Steve Ballmer’s riskiest trade-show moves in years.

On Wednesday, Mr. Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, will unveil a novel take on a slate-type computer during his evening keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, according to people familiar with Microsoft’s plans. The slate will be made by Hewlett-Packard and possibly available by mid-year, these people said.

This product better be good because Apple is expected to unveil its take on the slate/tablet form factor later this month. If history holds, Apple will issue a product that surprises people in a few ways and that stands out from the crowd.

So the last thing Mr. Ballmer wants to hold up is a me-too device.

Press representatives from Microsoft and H.P. declined to comment on the product or the content of Mr. Ballmer’s speech.

My sources, however, say that Mr. Ballmer will show the as-yet-unnamed H.P. device, which will be touted as a multimedia whiz with e-reader and multi-touch functions.

Last fall, some photos emerged of a Microsoft tablet/slate prototype device.

It remains tough to tell where Microsoft’s work ends and H.P.’s begins on this type of product. But all eyes will be on Mr. Ballmer this week to see if Microsoft and H.P. can out-Apple Apple before Apple Apples.

http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100106/microsofts-ballmer-will-not-be-showing-slate-pc-at-ces-opening-tonight/

As much as BoomTown likes a good computer tablet face-off, sources with knowledge of the situation said that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will not be whipping out the secret “Courier” slate PC that the company has been noodling on in his keynote speech opening the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas tonight. Instead, he will be showing off a new Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) slate that runs Microsoft software.

Last night, the New York Times reported that the software giant would do so in a blog post titled: “Microsoft and H.P. to Reveal Slate PC Ahead of Apple.”

Apple will be launching its much-heralded slate at an event in San Francisco on January 27, as All Things Digital has previously reported.

The Apple (AAPL) device is garnering the expected flood of hype, of course. So, don’t expect Ballmer to pointlessly go against the tide on this particular tsunami, thereby painting its slate efforts as also-ran.

Instead, his speech is more likely to focus on its new Windows 7 operating system, cloud computing, portable and mobile devices and Microsoft’s “software plus services” motto.

While he might talk about a range of products related to Microsoft (MSFT) and there will be multi-form hardware shown, including multi-touch, tablet-type devices, there will be no grand showing of the one called the Courier, which Microsoft is reportedly working on with HP.

Hence the possible confusion over the PC slate.

Now, please go back to gushing over the Apple iSlate ad nauseum!

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooold Appleinsider swipe.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/26/apples_patent_for_an_lcd_display_that_also_takes_photos_video.html

The filing, which predates the iPhone's release by nearly three years, describes a new breed of LCD display that could simultaneously take photos while continuing its role as the primary display screen of an electronics device or computer monitor.

The idea behind the invention is to wedge thousands of microscopic image sensors between the LCD cells that make up the display, where each sensor would be responsible for capturing a piece of the overall photo. Those pieces would then be stitched together by software to recreate the complete image capture.

According to the filing, made back in June of 2004, the tiny image sensors could also have variable focal lengths in order to zoom and focus the image: "The lens might either be physically moved or have its properties altered. In the latter case, the lens might be made of a material that changes its refractive index in response to electrical stimulus or a magnetic field."

The filing has a newfound relevance given recent claims by Digg founder Kevin Rose that Apple's forthcoming iPhone revision will include a camera mounted on the face of the unit to coincide with a mobile version of iChat suited for handheld video conferencing.

While Rose's track-record on predicting Apple's future directions is akin to a hit or miss affair, the advent of video conference via iPhones is seemingly inevitable given time. Therefore his proposals, as well as those outlined in the patent, could potentially surface slightly further down the road should they not be part of Apple's more immediate plans.

Of particular interest in this regard, is the electronics maker's claims that 'integrated sensing displays' are ideally suited for video conferencing on handhelds, where the available real estate limits the number of components -- such as a front mounted cam in addition to a rear-mounted cam -- that can fit into the devices.

"A panel created from an integrated, embedded macro charge-coupled devices (CCD) would thus be able to both display and record visual information simultaneously, without the use of an external video capture device. Simply put, the same panel could display a video conference while also recording the participant sitting in front of it," the company said in the filing.

"A video panel that has an embedded macro CCD is no longer just a display. It can be used to transmit as well as receive visual information. One use and benefit for such a panel is video conferencing: a user can maintain eye contact with someone on screen because the camera is 'in' the screen. In addition, portable devices, such as portable digital assistants (PDAs) and cell phones, have very limited space for displays and would benefit if additional real estate were not used for a camera."

The patent filing was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in April of 2006 alongside three other filings pertaining to wireless iPods, iChat whiteboards, and virtual touch-screen keyboards -- technologies which were all later implemented in shipping Apple products.

there are patents concerning this tablet you place inside an iMac or inside a MacBook or notebook dock.

Good idea? I don't know. But it is intriguing. I'm composing this post on an iPod touch if I could dock this touch and have my iMac launch Safari with this same text would be a cool trick. Usefully? Not really but ingtruing, bird.

Support DbD at Apple's Jan. 27 "Come see our latest restriction" event in SF
Posted On: Fri, 2010-01-22 15:11 by JohnSullivan

This coming Wednesday, January 27th, Apple has invited members of the media to San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater to "Come see our latest creation."

There has been much speculation about what Apple will be announcing, with most of it revolving around a possible tablet PC -- basically an oversized iPhone. But no matter the form factor, it's all but certain given the direction Apple has been going that any new product will be DRM-infected and restricted by proprietary software.

Share this story! — Digg or reddit

The company who once announced to the world that they opposed DRM on music has been pushing DRM in every other area of their business. Apple's iPhone goes out of its way to apply DRM on every piece of software on the device, saying it is illegal for users to install software that comes from anywhere other than the official Application Store.

Can you imagine a world where this same restriction is applied to your laptop or tablet PC? That could very well be Apple's announcement on Wednesday -- their latest restriction.

As in the past, they didn't invite us to the event, but we thought we would go anyway, and bring some friends. We'll be there to warn the public and the media outside the event about Apple's support for DRM and proprietary software.

Come help create the counter story in the media -- take photos, talk to the press, and have fun with a little bit of theater to show that Apple is not the force for creative expression they claim to be.

We got through to Steve Jobs before on music DRM, and convinced iTunes to drop it. We know we can have success here. But we need to repeat that effort and show that DRM on Apple computers means that people who are actually interested in creativity and freedom will go elsewhere.

Press coverage of Apple events usually falls all over itself to praise the style and sleekness of their devices. It's vital that we be there to unmask the new product for what it undoubtedly will be -- another seamless case and pretty screen hiding a new set of restrictions and threats to the public's digital freedom.

We'll post the precise time and meeting location for our group here next week -- since Apple's event starts at 10am, attendees will be showing up at 9am, and we will want to be ready and outside the Theater by then to hand out flyers and talk to people.

I'll be there representing the FSF and coordinating the action. Please join us, and bring friends. Let us know you're coming at info@defectivebydesign.org.

Still showing us nothing.

Difference between Apple and HP (everybody else) is the demonstration of a REAL product you can probably buy the SAME DAY. No one demos a product and makes you want that product like Steve Jobs. HP Slate is cool but it'll look ancient compare to what Cupertino's got in store.

Apple to announce the iPhone to ALL US Carriers in 2010?

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/25/tablet-hype-and-rumors-jobs-and-cook-carriers-and-iphone-apps/

I ldoubt it, but an industry "analyst" predicts so. But the comment about Apple's media event artwork gives this theory  some legs.  The art work is in the link and it does display the colors of the various cell phone companies.  Plus, that purple color in the lower right hand corner could be for Metro PCS. Hmmm......

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/26/mcgraw-hills-ceo-confirms-apple-tablet-debuting-tomorrow/

Color us (not) surprised, but Apple is definitely launching a tablet tomorrow. At least, according to the CEO of one of the planet's most noted book publishers. In a recent interview on CNBC, Terry McGraw (head honcho of McGraw-Hill, naturally), very openly admitted that books from his company would be coming to an Apple tablet "tomorrow," and he also confirmed that his company has "worked with Apple for quite awhile." As he dug the hole deeper, we also learned that the "tablet will be based on the iPhone operating system," and he noted that said books would be "transferable." We're assuming an updated iPhone OS is also in the works, one that presumably supports textbooks in the way that the mythical tablet might. Obviously we're not taking any of this as gospel until Stevie J confirms or denies it on stage tomorrow -- for all we know, Mr. McGraw may have just seen something speculative -- but it's not too often you see a CEO blow this much pointed smoke. Peek the full quote after the break along with the interview clip.

I'm hoping this is their foray into netbook pricing area so 500-600 would be an ideal sweet spot for me.

it'll hopefully be between $299 and $599, more than a iPhone, less than the cheapest Mac, Mac mini. So $429-449-ish.

Visa at the ready.

Assuming there are enough stans outthere they will buy this and in bunches. $500-1000 and at some point someone will hack it so you get command prompts.

plus the sdk.

this thing has legs.

and in 3 yrs time entry will be 250.
