I don't think any American college/high school (pre-2005) players have actually tried to avoid playing for the team that drafted them. Steve Francis was the #2 overall pick in 1999 and had a really sad, awkward draft night as he clearly did not want to play for Vancouver. They traded him to Houston shortly after the draft, but I don't know what would have happened if they would've just told him "tough shit, you're our guy now." Aside form creating a PR and team chemistry nightmare, that is.
