Glasper is great as a live act, utterly forgettable in a studio setting. I guess you could call him the Black Thought of the modern jazz world.
This man is behind some of the worst names/album titles I’ve ever heard. What was that one recent thing I never listened to? R + R = Now or whatever? Black Radio Vol. 6? A non-literal mixtape called “FUCK YO FEELINGS?” Just terrible marketing and vision.
98% of the JAZZ BUT HIP-HOP JAZZ projects are non-starters for me. A studio setting with Glasper and 9th Wonder sounds like another banana peel on the trash heap. Ever heard of Jazzy Jeff’s Playlist Retreat? Where he gets 100+ DJs, producers, musicians, and vocalists together for a weekend? He loves to lock random combinations in studios and let them “create.” The funny thing is that literally every room produces the same shit - a basic drum track with “swing” and some fucking guy playing chords on a Fender Rhodes while everybody nods their heads like it’s the most amazing shit ever recorded.
I get those vibes looking at the “Dinner Party” collective. And no, I haven’t listened to a second of it.
