3025370, Kamasi, Glasper, 9th and Terrace are Dinner Party

Album drops July 10, link to first song in the link, excited to hear the album

https://pitchfork.com/news/kamasi-washington-terrace-martin-robert-glasper-and-9th-wonder-form-supergroup-dinner-party-share-new-song-freeze-tag-listen/
3025372, I did not see this group coming, had this been hinted at?
Posted by upUPNorth, Fri Jun-26-20 08:51 AM
I'm definitely not mad at it, and I don't pay attention to stuff as much as I used to.

Freeze Tag feels like a realllly good 9th Wonder beat. I wonder if other tracks might take on a more jazz style, but I'm here for all of it.
3025373, was it the same crew behind
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Jun-26-20 09:03 AM
"Pig feet" that dropped a week or two ago? Had Kamasi and Terrace on it at least with a Denzel Curry feature. I liked it the first round but need to give it more attention.

3025374, I'm all for these one off super group albums.

3025375, count me in
Posted by CherNic, Fri Jun-26-20 09:37 AM
I could even do without the rap features
3025381, Can’t help, but wonder what .paak would sound like on this...
Posted by Crash85, Fri Jun-26-20 12:23 PM
Hella excited for this project, tho!
3025428, nah

3025435, RE: >< this ain't it
Posted by rmcphedr, Mon Jun-29-20 06:10 AM
this 'freeze tag' track is corny as hell: snare is shocking, singer is cringe.

glasper lost me around black radio 2/artscience time; it is getting to the point where i am going to stop checking on his releases.

3025454, ***stands in this line***

3025564, Kamasi is punching below his weight class if you ask me
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Fri Jul-03-20 08:40 PM
He's the transcendent talent here, I just hope the project makes people check for his music. It would be worth it if that were the case
3025699, just as boring as I suspected
Posted by Ray_Snill, Sat Jul-11-20 10:22 AM
way too much talent for this to be the output

3025703, geez I expected a tiny bit better
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Jul-11-20 07:15 PM
but not much, most of it was Kamasi though, and Terrace
3025432, Damn, 9th and Glasper...
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Jun-28-20 07:57 PM
That sounds like an insufferable dinner party.
3025565, LOL I can't find a single thing wrong with this analysis

3025460, Between The 4 Of Them, They Couldn't Have Come Up With A Better Name?
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon Jun-29-20 10:20 PM
Dinner Party, really, I get it, but c'mon that's the name they choose, not something clever, something that would be easier to search, plus there is already one or two indie artists with that name (and I only know that when I saw this post and tried to search on bandcamp & discogs to see if there was any info yet), oh well.

I'll wait till the album drops to see if this was worth the effort since they didn't put much into naming the project/supergroup.

3025566, Freeze Tag is beautiful. Can't wait for the album.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jul-03-20 08:49 PM
3025576, damn that's a great line up
Posted by justin_scott, Sat Jul-04-20 08:55 PM
definitely gotta check this out. Kamasi and Terrace alone should be amazing.
3025672, Just dropped
Posted by las raises, Thu Jul-09-20 11:13 PM
3025676, I dig it. Only 7 tracks and the weakest was the single
Posted by CherNic, Fri Jul-10-20 08:44 AM
I like MOST of Terrace Martin's work though, and if his name wasn't attached I may not have listened....9th and Glasper would probably have been insufferable lmao
3025684, i really enjoyed this
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jul-10-20 10:53 AM
even the two instrumental tracks were dope.
3025688, I thought the single was very mid
Posted by daskap, Fri Jul-10-20 12:02 PM
...and the whole project wasn't much better, I expected more from this lineup
3025700, this was mediocre as fuck..what a waste
Posted by Hellyeah, Sat Jul-11-20 11:58 AM
3025701, this was perfectly fine...
Posted by thebigfunk, Sat Jul-11-20 01:11 PM
but also perfectly unmemorable.

I admittedly have a bordering-on-irrational dislike of Glasper at this point and Terrace generally bores me. But even with that in mind I'm surprised at how tepid this is.

A couple of the more beat-oriented instrumentals might make it on a playlist but I'll likely never play the album as a whole again...

3025710, The first song "Sleepless Nights" is nice...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sun Jul-12-20 11:16 PM
Kinda goes downhill from there imo. I figured "Freeze Tag" would be the only song that repeptitive, but it turned out to be a very accurate advertisement for the project. I hoped that was just a head knodder to get people interested. I'd say most of these "songs" sound like reprised versions of more fleshed out songs... which I just find kinda weird from a roster this stacked. I almost think it would've made more sense if they just left the vocals out and went all the way AWF with the instrumentals.

3027368, They dropped another album Dinner Party: Dessert
Posted by las raises, Fri Oct-09-20 07:56 AM
Album features a lot of guest on the seven songs from Bilal to Herbie to Snoop.

*Just realized all the tracks are the same but more features, not sure if it's a remix album, haven't listened yet
3027378, Damn, the hate is strong and I love it. A few things:
Posted by third_i_vision, Fri Oct-09-20 10:44 AM
Glasper is great as a live act, utterly forgettable in a studio setting. I guess you could call him the Black Thought of the modern jazz world.

This man is behind some of the worst names/album titles I’ve ever heard. What was that one recent thing I never listened to? R + R = Now or whatever? Black Radio Vol. 6? A non-literal mixtape called “FUCK YO FEELINGS?” Just terrible marketing and vision.

98% of the JAZZ BUT HIP-HOP JAZZ projects are non-starters for me. A studio setting with Glasper and 9th Wonder sounds like another banana peel on the trash heap. Ever heard of Jazzy Jeff’s Playlist Retreat? Where he gets 100+ DJs, producers, musicians, and vocalists together for a weekend? He loves to lock random combinations in studios and let them “create.” The funny thing is that literally every room produces the same shit - a basic drum track with “swing” and some fucking guy playing chords on a Fender Rhodes while everybody nods their heads like it’s the most amazing shit ever recorded.

I get those vibes looking at the “Dinner Party” collective. And no, I haven’t listened to a second of it.

Get off my lawn.
3027560, Bullshit.... Chasing Goosebumps was amazing as an album
Posted by The3rdOne, Thu Oct-15-20 01:36 PM
3027561, I enjoy a lot of his studio work
Posted by CherNic, Thu Oct-15-20 01:40 PM
Granted this project hasn't aged well, and the dessert drop is a hell no for me - but I definitely listen to songs from Canvas and Black Radio 1 & 2 multiple times a year. Enjoyed the Covered project too. And a couple songs from the last mixtape (agree the title sucked)

Have seen him twice live now. First time was a dumpster fire but the last time was very dope.

I can mess with Glasper + Terrace or Terrace + Salaam or Glasper/Terrace/Kamasi...I think 9th might be the outlier here
3027566, lol - didn't this just come out like a month ago ?!
Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-15-20 01:56 PM
>Granted this project hasn't aged well
3027568, and?
Posted by CherNic, Thu Oct-15-20 02:23 PM
3027569, Just never seen an album being labeled dated w/in the same quarter.
Posted by Brew, Thu Oct-15-20 03:15 PM
Nothing all that serious *shrugs*
3027574, dude it's a big time snore-fest

3027593, Damn, 9th catching strays every where in here
Posted by DJR, Thu Oct-15-20 07:16 PM
The hell? Why’s everyone hate 9th now?
