The thing about Frank is that he isn't a great singer... but he can carry a tune. Well, in that performance, he dropped the tune... and when all you have is the fact that you can carry a tune, that's a no-no.
As someone else mentioned, his performance of "Bad Religion" on Fallon was pretty good. I was actually surprised at how good he sounded there. That's not to say I was wowed with him vocally. I just expected him to sound worse live.
It's like he didn't practice enough for this or something... couldn't find his key. He said "mind" off key the exact same way every.single.time he said it. That was just weird. Started out bad and didn't improve as it went on. I don't think I've ever seen a vocal performance from him that sounded quite THAT amateurish... and it just so happens it's on the biggest stage he sang on yet. Damn Frank.
He's wildly inconsistent with the live performances, but I'll keep in mind that this is his first album. Some really great artists have had rocky starts. Overall, I just think this was one of his bad performances. I've seen him do much better though, so I can't say he completely sucks as a singer. He is very inconsistent with it though.
