The whole night he seemed nervous as shit, then he performed nervous as shit lol. When he does that song live it sounds 10x better...

It's crazy how perfectly calm and cool everyone at the grammy's is, except for Ocean, Adele & Kelly Clarkson. It seems like they were the only humans there.

He's at his best when he's conjuring up images we haven't ever heard from a black musician on the radio. The substance of his lyrics is a breath of fresh air and I really enjoy that aspect of them.

But his melodies are lag way behind the level of quality his lyrics have and he can't sing consistently.

But teaming up with someone to become a writing team would be a huge step back for him (right now, anyway), so he'll probably keep on this way fro the better part of the next 10 or 12 years.

whatever statement he could have made with the song (IMO it was well over hyped), the kick-ass stage set, and his general presence... was marred by that assault on my ears.

and because he sucked so much that's what they're gonna talk about.

not that boring ass song he sang.

not that kick ass stage.

not the fact that he won a Grammy in a category they basically created for him.

but because he turned in the most assjuice performance since a certain someone in the closing game of the 2011 NBA Finals.

he choked.

in the same way that the "Camel" is one of the best to ever do it, but he got Ethered that one day

you got cats out here who say "Nas Lost" to bury the truth of that event

now granted, I don't think Frank Ocean Stans (if there are any out there) are calling that performance great but it's the same sort of thing.

that stage was perfectly set up for dude and... CHOOOOOOOKE

execution was some BS

disclaimer: while I like a good deal of his music, my argument is not that Frank Ocean is a top-tier performer it's just that he choked given a great opportunity, which was the spirit of that comment

but like Camel Stans tend to do, you fire a shot and people get mad at the truth

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

and right now he is history before our eyes.

Frank Ocean to me is being used in a twisted novelty as a human being, which isn't going to be good for him in the long run.

if he makes albums or not, he is still a human being and this ain't right.

while i'm tired of Nas being so gimmicky when he didn't have to be, he whipped the camel's behind.

lay z has that illuminati money and push, however dude never showed me a whole lot.

i can say when pac, biggie and prime peak Snoop counted that Nas was in the discussion. Lay Z was never that dude.

he is more lucky than good imo, nas got him beat.

Of course there was women going nuts for him (Before his "announcement") but most ppl seemed uninvolved. He seemed to want to fawn over him than really try to preform (Picture him as a fat Elvis in Vegas). He's never been the best singer imo but I've enjoyed his work. His live performance leave a lot to be desired.

Saw him at the 9:30 Club in DC, an intimate dark venue and a week after Channel Orange dropped no less. The energy was palpable, there was no opener so he went on like 30 minutes after doors which was a treat, and he seemed genuinely comfortable and full of energy. In all, pretty much the opposite of what he usually portrays on television.

In response to Reply # 0

I've been saying that for the longest time that Miguel is a better live performer than Frank Ocean & the Grammys proved it tonight. Even though Frank Ocean won over Miguel for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Miguel proved to be the bigger winner with his Grammy performance of "Adorn" which was dope. Frank's performance of "Forrest Gump" was lackluster. On facebook, people keep talking about how bad Frank's performance was. I wish Miguel would have won that Grammy, not Frank.

I've seen that video. Miguel doesn't need to go the R. Kelly/Trey Songz route. He has the vocal range, talent, & ability to have Excellent Live Shows without the nastiness. Hopefully, he'll take the higher road, not the lower one in his career. The numerous videos on Youtube of Miguel's concert & talk show appearances show his greatness as one of the best live performers today.
This is my response to that video.

I completely disagree. That's your opinion. I bought Frank Ocean's album too so I supported the brother. I prefer Miguel's vocal tone & vocal sound as opposed to Frank's. Frank is a better songwriter, but Miguel is a better singer, vocally & pitch wise. I'm judging based on the tone of their voices & range. I think 10 years from now, people will still be listening to "Adorn" as opposed to "Thinking About You" - Miguel's songs will better stand the test of time & have more longevity.

I feel like your position ignores a fundamental part about being a music SHOW, though. This isn't Pop Up Video, we weren't getting that studio mix piped over a slow motion video of Frank running in a smooth yellow suit.

they aren't playing albums up there, either. "Forrest Gump" - especially THAT "Forrest Gump" - against "Adorn" is just a wash six (in my case seven) days of the week. ESPECIALLY at an entertainment venue. I'm not sitting in a huge ballroom drinking champagne for five hours, waiting to get another taste of my escort after I get a closer look J. Lo and Katy Perry in those dresses, just to hear that REM music and the weirdest whistling in a while.

why he went even LOWER profile live than on the record at an event that doesn't have his name on the marque is ballsy, but it's not entertaining.

Doing an upbeat version of the song with that dope ass set, a band, and frank learning to dance and put on a show

But no! we get his thin ass voice (I liked the SNL performance by the way) and another stripped down arrangement that shows how little range he has. What a fucn waste and its one of those instances where it does make me personally like the recorded material a little less. With rap/rappers I'm an apologist, because of the structure of rap and the many rap performances i know shit live shows are common. BUT singers! Shit I want them to fucn sing yo!

I'm not sad for him cause muhfuckas was up clapping to that shit. I feel I'm getting bamboozled. I'm with imvcspl we let this shit happen.

Props to Miguel for actually being an artist AND performer and habing that beautiful fucn girlfriend, lol

The thing about Frank is that he isn't a great singer... but he can carry a tune.
Well, in that performance, he dropped the tune... and when all you have is the fact that
you can carry a tune, that's a no-no.

As someone else mentioned, his performance of "Bad Religion" on Fallon was pretty good. I was
actually surprised at how good he sounded there. That's not to say I was wowed with him vocally.
I just expected him to sound worse live.

It's like he didn't practice enough for this or something... couldn't find his key. He said "mind"
off key the exact same way every.single.time he said it. That was just weird. Started out bad and didn't
improve as it went on. I don't think I've ever seen a vocal performance from him that sounded quite THAT
amateurish... and it just so happens it's on the biggest stage he sang on yet. Damn Frank.

He's wildly inconsistent with the live performances, but I'll keep in mind that this is his
first album. Some really great artists have had rocky starts. Overall, I just think this
was one of his bad performances. I've seen him do much better though, so I can't say he completely
sucks as a singer. He is very inconsistent with it though.

He and the Weeknd suck so bad. Listen folks.. if you cannot sing live then guess what? Your album is all gimmicks. I mean it's no different if you get accclaimed as a great rapper only to find out you cannot rap. A great guitarist and you can't play a lick. Ha... one poster had it right 'ya'll let this shit get this far'.

Anytime Madonna can outsing you...

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

63. "This Video Proves Miguel is a Better Singer Than Frank Ocean"
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Feb-11-13 02:05 PM by J-Elijah

http://youtu.be/LjXh79I2he0

I bought both albums so I'm not judging from the outside looking in cause' I supported both "Channel Orange" & "Kaleidoscope Dream" with my funds copping both albums, but when I saw that video, there was no question in my mind that Miguel was the better singer. I was completely convinced of Miguel's vocal range with that song. Frank Ocean is that songwriter, but Miguel is that voice.
