White people, even white hipsters who like alot of old "authentic" black music (Aretha, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, etc.) , never seemed to latch onto that type of music, but it was wildly popular in the black community: Freddie Jackson, Anita Baker, Phyllis Hyman, Karyn White, etc.
