"The East Coast sound is slowly making a comeback into the club/radio"
Tue Sep-22-15 11:46 AM by -DJ R-Tistic-

It's been a while since the East had a sound that was dominant on radio or in the club. Even with Jay and several other East Coast artists having some hits the last few years, it wasn't the same way that you can identify a L.A. (Mustard on the) beat, or a South/Trap beat. Sure, some folks say "Rap isn't Regional anymore" but this isn't the case at alllll in the clubs, especially the more hood spots.

But yeah...I feel like this new sound started with a few songs from around 2011, such as French Montana "Shot caller" and Meek Mill's hits, which had a darker and faster feel than a lot of the South's songs, although it was 808 heavy. I think Shmurda "Hot nigga" last year was really what got things in motion, along with tracks like Troy Ave. "All about the money."

A lot of East Coast sounding club songs right now are in that 85 BPM range...which is faster than all the Trap, but slower than the L.A. songs. A lot of them have dark piano loops, heavy 808/Bass vs a Bassline, and the snares hit hard. And surprisingly, some of the songs aren't even coming from East Coast artists....I'll argue that Rico Richie "Poppin" and "Back n forth" - carry this sound, along with Ray Jr. "Biggie."

French Montana "Off the rip" is another one that fits the sound, just as "I'm a coke boy" did a few years ago. Also Chinx ft. Jadakiss "Dope house." I would even say that Drake's "Energy" and "10 bands" fit this same sound. Some of these tracks aren't too far off from Future's faster songs like "Trap niggas" and "Stick talk."

It sounds different, and it's a retro re-make, but I'm also digging this Baltimore remake of their classic called "Bank rolls." It sounds like 2007 "Toe wop" Harlem, but that beat still goes.

I actually think it's great that we might finally have three completely different sounds in the club at once again...most of the decade has basically been slower Trap and L.A./Mustard, with not much other variety. I want to see what Jay, Nas, and even some of the lyrical/non-commericial NY heads can come up with. It is probably the closest commercial descendant to Boom Bap I've heard since the Kanye/Just Blaze/Dipset chipmunk soul era.
