i mean, the bale twins started the film out by murkin' piper perabo. that pretty let me know they/"he" weren't supposed to be all *that* sympathetic.
i think jackman's character started out believing he was "more civilized" than they were (something the film never pretends is true) and he slowly devolves. borden/fallon never had that pretense of civility. if anything, that's the only way they came across as "better"--because they never masqueraded as something they weren't.
