Well... I will say there's lots to enjoy about this movie. But you really have to pay close attention. I might even take in a second viewing to catch stuff I might have missed. Story-wise, I can't say much about it because during the Q & A (NAME DROPPING ALERT), a certain bat-actor made us pledge not to give away any of the movie's "secrets." But the basic story is this: two rival magicians, though a series of events, engage in a particularly nasty game of one-upsmanship...

It's weird, but as the movie unfolded, I couldn't help but think about Tupac and Biggie. I know, the movie's based on a book, but the escalating beef between the two magicians seemed as silly as the East-West feud of the mid-90's.

Anyway, on to the performances. Both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman were great. Michael Caine was fantastic, as usual. David Bowie was also solid. Scarlett? Well, she was nice to look at.

Script-wise? Well, I can see there being an uproar about... all of the stuff... yeah, you REALLY have to pay attention. In fact, I'm not spoiling anything by telling you that the first line of the movie practically is a... setup. There's a lot of flashing back and forward and back and flashing back-within-a-flashback... yeah. And there are a few things one can "predict" as it goes on.

I can see this one having the same effect on audiences as Marie Antoinette, but for entirely different reasons. Stuff happens in this movie that you'll either buy and go with, or you won't. But if you're having a hard time going with it, just think of it as a two-hour magic trick.

>Well... I will say there's lots to enjoy about this movie.

Indeed

>But you really have to pay close attention.

Yeah I sorta blew it on that one. Wasnt really my fault tho as my girl kept asking questions & I would try 2 explain 2 her what I thought was goin on insteada payin attention 2 what was really goin on.

I might even take
>in a second viewing to catch stuff I might have missed.

It reminded me a lot of Memento in that manner. The narration from Wolverine's character even sounded almost identical 2 Lenny @ times in the delivery & voice. I've noticed Malick had a similar thing goin on in The Thin Red Line & The New World.

>Story-wise, I can't say much about it because during the Q & A
>(NAME DROPPING ALERT), a certain bat-actor made us pledge not
>to give away any of the movie's "secrets." But the basic
>story is this: two rival magicians, though a series of events,
>engage in a particularly nasty game of one-upsmanship...

Very nasty, very dark. Jigga liked.

>It's weird, but as the movie unfolded, I couldn't help but
>think about Tupac and Biggie. I know, the movie's based on a
>book, but the escalating beef between the two magicians seemed
>as silly as the East-West feud of the mid-90's.

It really did seem silly but you had 2 admire their passion for their craft. After seeing the secrets of some of the tricks in this movie, I couldn't help but wonder how "innocent" many of the common magic tricks we see most magicians do, really are. I didnt stay till the end of the credits but hopefully there was 1 of those, "No animals were harmed in the making of this movie" blurbs @ the end of it;)

>Anyway, on to the performances. Both Christian Bale and Hugh
>Jackman were great.

This was the 1st non Wolvy performance by Hugh that I've liked. He did a really good job. Overall I think his performance was a bit uneven @ times but that's a minor gripe & probably due to the fact that Bale was perfect throughout the whole thing.

Michael Caine was fantastic, as usual.

Totally. Perfect casting choice there.

>David Bowie was also solid.

My girl did NOT want to belive that was really him. I didnt even notice that was him the 1st time I saw the trailer. Another good casting choice played to perfection. He could've tried to make it more showy but I'm glad he didnt. Keeps ya guessing.

Scarlett? Well, she was nice to
>look at.

Oh indeed. I actually thought she wasnt to bad compared to her usual performances. She wasnt given a ton to work w/ here but she didnt do any harm. Rebecca Hall impressed me & it was nice 2 see Gollum in the flesh as well even tho it was a bit part.

>Script-wise? Well, I can see there being an uproar about...
>all of the stuff... yeah, you REALLY have to pay attention.

Even if you do, I dont know, if you can ever really know, ya know?

>In fact, I'm not spoiling anything by telling you that the
>first line of the movie practically is a... setup.

It makes perfect sense @ the end of the movie. A very nice touch. I dont read many books but I might need to read this one to see how it stacks up.

There's a
>lot of flashing back and forward and back and flashing
>back-within-a-flashback... yeah.

Nolan loves the flashbacks & quick cuts & what not. He uses them pretty effectively for the most part but they can also be a real pain in the ass in keeping the viewer in a state of WTF. But I'm guessing that's the intention.

And there are a few things
>one can "predict" as it goes on.

Certainly. You can pretty much piece it together before the very end but this movie isnt all about figuring out the twist a la...ah nevermind.

>I can see this one having the same effect on audiences as
>Marie Antoinette, but for entirely different reasons. Stuff
>happens in this movie that you'll either buy and go with, or
>you won't.

Yeah once I had it figured out I thought, "Ehhh that's kind of a tough sell & maybe a bit of a cop out or cheap gimmick" But it is a movie afterall & of course since its Nolan I could give him a pass on the suspension of disbelief in this instance. But I guess I can see now why some people dont feel Memento as much as I do for the same reason. The peeps that dont like Memento & dont like this will probably even call Nolan a hack, but the dude flat out just makes movies that I end up lovin.

But if you're having a hard time going with it,
>just think of it as a two-hour magic trick.

^^^Great advice. Great flick. Nolans officially 5/5 in my book & I cant wait 2 see it again to understand certain actions & motives better.

liked it a whole lot. seriosly, if you look past a couple implausible situations, and just enjoy it for the character development and amazing story telling of christopher nolan, it really is a fantastic movie. its one of those movies i love going to the theatre to see. a great popcorn flick.

bale and jackman are both amazing in it. and the supporting cast is great. i just cant help but hate scarlett johansson in her recent films. i love the films she's in, i just hate her roles. she can be so damn irritating. case and point (no pun) Match Point. i loved Match Point, but i couldnt have disliked her anymore. she just seems to get cast in these classy, euro-type films where she just comes off as this silly ditzy american girl. she was slightly less annoying in The Prestige, but it felt similar.

Christian Bale is the fucking man btw. i love him in everything, and this movie just pumped me up even more for The Dark Knight.

p.s. i couldnt believe it when i saw who was playing "Tesla." those eyes!!

there's not many (maybe not any) other director who are in as much control of their movies as he is.

the fractured timeline thing has been done to death, but it's done so effortlessly and perfectly here that you don't even think about it.

and the tone and mood of the whole movie is *perfect*. i mean, absolutely spot-on.

all of the acting is amazing and the writing, except for a few clunky spots of exposition, is great.

one of my favorite movies in a while. it even made me look up tesla in wikipedia. now THAT is an interesting dude. anyone know if there have been any movies about his fued with edison?

There were a few times were I wasnt sure where a certain scene took place in the linear structure but that could've been due to my non-sober status. For the most part I agree w/ you tho

104025, Two rivalries in the movie
Posted by nipsey, Sat Oct-21-06 03:01 PM
Although it's pretty small part, but I was thinking that there was another rivalry in the movie. Tesla v. Edison. While watching the movie, I couldn't help but think of Edison as the Bill Gates of the time sending his ElectriThugs to steal Tesla's ideas.

According to Wikipedai, cause you know it's NEVER wrong, they had a pretty fierce rivalry that parallels the rivalry between Borden and Angiers.

From wikipedia:

"Some sources have claimed that due to their animosity toward each other neither was given the award, despite their enormous scientific contributions, and that each sought to minimize the other one's achievements and right to win the award, that both refused to ever accept the award if the other received it first, and that both rejected any possibility of sharing it."

Borden (Bale's Character) cloned himself once form Tesla's machine or that was actually his twin?

Also the original Hugh Jackman character died in the water container right and it was always the clone who lived on?

Lastly how did on the night where they thought Borden killed hugh's character did the hugh clone know not to appear?

1)No, he had a twin the entire movie. That's why he admired the old Chinese magician who performed the goldfish bowl trick so much. 100% devotion to his art.

2)We don't know which is the original or which is the clone. If the original stays in the machine then the original dies in each of the 100 performances. If the original one is transported then the clone killed the "original" Jackman the first time he used the machine.

3)Not sure why the transported man did not appear, but maybe he heard the commotion when Borden passed Michael Cane character, or maybe he spotted him before hand, or maybe it was the last performance and he KNEW Border had to show up.

The question is why did Borden get convicted when he clearly tired to break the glass? Was it that the glass was broken by others (as seen with the walk with the judge) and they just lied on him??

It don't matter. The evidence overwhelmingly pointed to Bale setting up Grant's character. If someone walked up on me while I was killing someone I would try to act like I was trying to help.

1. yes it was his twin brother...alot of foreshadowing in the beginning explains it, plus they couldn't of been clones because they both had two complete different personalities

2. that was a clone because if you look at the very end of the movie you see endless of "cloned tanks"...the original died from the original clone shooting him...

3. the last one the director depends on the viewers intelligence to figure that one out and common sense would imply that A) he KNEW and devise the set-up on broden (he DID put that in the diary which broden originally assumed it was a fake) or B) realized that through the commotion that something had happened and logically did not to expose the "prestige"

4. borden got convicted purely because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. he easily had a motive because they have decades of beef between them....just the fact he was right there at the scene of the crime made it easy for a conviction

it took me a bit after the movie to wrap my head around it, but yeah, i think the clone always lived on. cuz they show the first time he does it, and he kills the clone. as for why the clone doesn't show up, i was under the assumption that all of his memory stays with the clone, so the clone knew about the frame up. and at the end, when he's talking about how he does know sacrifice, and he alluded to how he had to kill himself over and over again. what i wonder is what he must have felt knowing he was going to die each time, but knowing that he would live on in the clone. do he and the clone share one consciousness? and i thought it was interesting how he always mentioned that no one cares about the man in the box, and he finally gets to be the man in the box and the one who gets the applause.

>Borden (Bale's Character) cloned himself once form Tesla's

Thats a good question. Folks here say that he always had a twin but I am not sure about that. for a couple of reasons. Tesla said that he had done something for another magician. Bale was checking out Tesla and I don't remember anything that suggested how long the twin brother had been around. Also, remember when they buried one of the Bales and he came out to dinner and said that his new trick would be burying himself at the end of every show? What does that mean. I think I have to watch more to sort it out.

>Also the original Hugh Jackman character died in the water
>container right and it was always the clone who lived on?

I am not sure but they way I saw it was not in terms of one being a clone and one not but rather they were the exact same person. Either one could live on being him.

>Lastly how did on the night where they thought Borden killed
>hugh's character did the hugh clone know not to appear?

I think they saw the opportunity to set up Bale's character and took advatnage of it.

I thought it was obvious that the mute assistant was either Bale's clone or twin. I actually thought it was a clone because I thought since he went to Tesla 1st, he cloned himself and used it from then on. I guess I was really looking at him because eveyone kept stating how this movie would require 2 to 3 viewings.

It was pretty creepy to see dozens of those dead clones down there, all so he could get his revenge on one man.

Wolfie and Bats were great. Cane was good also. Scarlett got some big ass titties.

Its good to see Tesla getting some love. Fuck Thomas Edison. Shark ****as.

the twin thing was pretty well telegraphed. i got it about halfway through. they increasingly made reference to "fallon." they didn't mention him all that much at first, even though they were showing him. but the a LOT of the dialogue suggested it and when that transported man thing came up... well, there you go.

good twin/bad twin.

they both had live "with their hands dirty" (i.e. "not remembering" which knot they tied on ol' girl, all the subsequent stuff they did to jackman's character...)

that trio of characters were all evil to some degree and they all met with really severe consequences/losses for it. i thought the nolans did a great job conveying that in script and onscreen.

i think it was intentional for people to figure out the twin part early..especially they LITERALLY tell you throughout the movie...caine's character immediately figured it whut he was doing by saying he uses a double...

i think it was intentional because it's not about the twist, the twist is only another ingredient to the actual point to the story which was the obsession...

the last part of the movie sums it up real nice when caine said something like they didn't want to know how it was done they just want to constently be duped over & over...

104055, I'm of mixed mind about this movie ***spoilers***
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Oct-23-06 12:42 PM
I can't figure out if I definitively like it or not.

In the end, I think it was probably a better story than it was a film. I mean, it was beautifully shot, and the story was intriguing, but... I feel like it was missing something. By the end, I didn't really have sympathy for either Bale or Jakcman's characters, which usually wouldn't bother me, except I think they were trying to suggest that the twins were better people than Jackman, which I'm not sure is true.

Imma have to marinate over this flick for a little while more...
104056, i didn't get that impression so much as...
Posted by teapoetess, Mon Oct-23-06 01:42 PM
that all three represented the idea that your decisions make you evil.

i mean, the bale twins started the film out by murkin' piper perabo. that pretty let me know they/"he" weren't supposed to be all *that* sympathetic.

i think jackman's character started out believing he was "more civilized" than they were (something the film never pretends is true) and he slowly devolves. borden/fallon never had that pretense of civility. if anything, that's the only way they came across as "better"--because they never masqueraded as something they weren't.
104057, See, that's the thing

>i mean, the bale twins started the film out by murkin' piper
>perabo. that pretty let me know they/"he" weren't supposed to
>be all *that* sympathetic.

Which is what I thought. Yet the way it was presented, we were supposed to feel "good" that one of the Borden twins ended up being free and getting his daughter back (of course, it's not even really clear whether the surviving twin is relaly the father).

>i think jackman's character started out believing he was "more
>civilized" than they were (something the film never pretends
>is true) and he slowly devolves. borden/fallon never had that
>pretense of civility. if anything, that's the only way they

Both the movie seemed to absolve the Bordens for killing Angier's wife because Angier lets his obsession consume him and Borden never pretends to be something he isn't. I didn't buy it.
104058, i guess i see what you mean...
Posted by teapoetess, Mon Oct-23-06 04:52 PM
except they weren't exactly absolved of it (by the writers), since borden lost his wife and his lover. the whole thing was about tit for tat and oneupsmanship. they kept doing things to cancel out the others' victories. it seems like it just wound up being chance that borden came out on top of it and not algiers. had algiers kept a few live clones in his back pocket, maybe he woulda came out on top in the end.

it felt random to me, because neither seemed presented as the protagonist. they were both anti-heroes.
104059, Here's how I saw it (spoiler)
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Oct-23-06 05:43 PM
Angier/Count was obsessed as was one of the Borden's. However, the other Borden, the one who loved his wife, wasn't as obsessive. He was the one that showed up at the funeral while the other brother was the one tied the knot because he was always pushing for more.

In the end, the father who was able to let things go and was remorseful wins out while the two obsessed magicians die. And the final killing was done, not out of obsession over magic, but as both revenge for the brother and in order to get his daughter back.

Part of me thinks the movie might have been better had they let us in on the brothers earlier because I think their struggle might have been more interesting than Jackman's pure obsession.

that wasn't their fault though.

when bale's character goes to tie the knot, he starts to do the "safe" knot that michael caine's character tells him to do and then piper perabo gives him that "fuck this pussy shit, you and i both know i can get out of any knot so tie that crazy knot right now" look.

it was her fault and borden didn't deserve the blame when she asked for it.
104061, RE: I'm of mixed mind about this movie ***spoilers***

the reason why you feel a disconnect is because NONE of them were good people...all of them were obsessed with their profession and the magician's code of never exposing your secret to the trick...

another theme in the movie throughout is the on-going mentioning of self-sacrifice & a magician always get their hands dirty and by the end of the movie hugh's character tranformed into a mediocre magician with morals into an obsessed man without none

You mean like putting in a blurb about comic books @ the begining of Unbreakable? Or like having a scene where Baby Glass mama gives him a comic book & tells him it has a twist ending? Or Glass askin Willis if there's someone like him @ 1 end of the spectrum, doesnt there have to be a complete opposite @ the other end?

I mean whether or not the twist is that 1 of em is the hero & the other is villian or that Glass set up the train wreck 2 figure out if Willis was the 1 is irrelevent. It wasnt a bad movie but the ending was pretty wack & he probably shouldn't keep trying to sell his movies based on "the twist".

I'm in awe of Chris Nolans skills to execute a movie so well, from conception, writing, directing, and editing. For a story so potentialy confusing it turned out pretty damn crisp. bravo!

It was like a magic trick that took so long to unfold that you could figure out what and how the next "twist" was going to come about. I liked it but thought it could have been a lot tighter and more effective.

There was something about it that just didn't grab me. I had the same feeling with Insomnia. It's a good movie but nothing all that memorable.

I didnt at first like the introduction of cloning. Sometime outlandish in a film otherwise exploring things otherwise real. Maybe it bugged me that they called it "science" when its not.It just stood out too much as sort of a cop out. After that initial feeling, I think its ok. Its sort of that unexplained bit that stands out that ties the whole theme of illusion together.
104072, Very good movie...
Posted by HighVoltage, Wed Nov-01-06 10:29 PM
though the Fallon thing was a bit too obvious.

Nolan coulda disguised it better, imo.

but this was a great film and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

if you think back to a lot of the scenes, there are many parallels to the truth (officially) revealed in the end (if u didnt catch on sooner).

For example, the chinese dude living a lie his whole life.

the bird trick how one always dies.

bale's wife saying some days he loves her, some days not.

Its neat to see how careful it was planned..... but in the end, Nolan gave away too many clues that a lot of people would find out the movie's "secret" earlier. Still, great movie despite those complaints.

i thought you were supposed to figure out the double but the transpotation was supposed to be the big surprise. I never saw that coming.

i kept thinking about how they killed birds, so it was like, why not people (or clones) too?

I had always assumed it all along, and then when they showed the blind assistants moving the tanks away, it kinda gave it away for me.
104075, that's funny cos i saw the movie with about 10 people..
Posted by araQual, Tue Feb-27-07 05:41 AM
..and i was the only one who guessed who Fallon was at the end when we were standing in the lobby trying to figure it out. & none of us actually picked up on there being a double. cos like it said in the film, the answer is so simple that we didn't wanna believe it. the alternative reason for The Transported Man was way more fantastical and so much time is spent on it by Jackman's character, that u totally forget about the simple answer. which i think was the point anywayz. i kinda kicked myself for not figuring out hehe.

it's really really obvious when a. they never really show fallon's face the whole movie till the end

the beards and wigs comment

the constantly changing mood of fallon/borden whatever

the "some days its not true"

how he always knew he could do this one trick nobody else could do right

when he's talkin about going to see the other guy's real transported man he's sitting in two different places and no...he's not talking to himself

I liked Bale's and Jackman's performances a lot. they made the movie. Caine was solid as usual. Scarlett was just kind of there, which is better than being distractingly bad.

like everyone said, the Fallon part is pretty obvious but I was a bit surprised by the clones at the end. I forgot about that part of the machine.

I usually don't go for these 6th Sense endings, but the meat of the movie is the two magician's rivalry and how their obsessions kind of ruin both their lives...opposed to other movies where the "secret" is the entire buildup of the movie.

I really dug the whole premise with magic as art, with total dedication and real risks involved. and they're right - nobody cares after they find out the secret. it's better not knowing.

Zoo was also right, that beginning scene and line *does* explain the entire movie.
104078, the big problem with the movie

is....why does borden send jackman to tesla....when he has no idea tesla can/would build such a machine, since he never needed it?

everything else about the movie is blindingly obvious.

but the ending sucks because it's like oh...yeah, one guy has a "real" magic trick thats technology and one guy has a twin.

that's not really interesting, although the story in between is.

I enjoyed them ovie and all, however the whole twin thing breaks it.

it would make more sense if bale's character really did get the mahcine from tesla, use it once early on, and stop there with the clones living the split life.

Christian Bale is English. His accent was fine, though depicting someone with little education.

Jackman's Angier character is someone born of nobility trying not to sound like a noble. He also had to distinguish his character from the drunk.

Although Jackman is Australian...it isn't as if he's unfamiliar with the English accent. Neither Bale or Jackman had an easy roles to portray. I think they did a fuckin good job of it all.

why is it a problem he had a twin?

it was a great parallel to what he was saying about the old chinese magician they saw about living the trick 24/7.

and also, a lot of magic tricks have very simple methods when you see how they are done.

I didn't say him having a twin was a problem, the question is why did he send him to the one person who could do what he wanted....when he didn't know that guy could actually pull it off.

it's retarded

and yes, I "got it", the movie beat that concept into our heads, and yes, it does ultimately make the ending uninteresting even as a self fulfilling prophecy, he's just a twin and possibly somewhat insane

I mean, it actually did work, right? It cloned things, like hats and people? That doesn't sit well with me. I kept waiting for it to be a dupe ( Doesn't Jackman spot Bale at Tesla's conference thing at one point? Why was he there if not to fuck with his rival? )

Other than that, I really liked this movie.

The twin thing with Bale's character(s) is telegraphed from the very beginning, and should come as a shock to no one. But it fit so tightly in with the themes of the movie that it didn't bother me. Just because you figure out a twist before it happens doesn't make it a bad twist. It was a little obvious, but still felt well written to me.

One thing that got kind of ridiculous was the constant back and forth sabotaging of the magicians. Like, these are pretty clever dudes, shouldn't they be able to recognize their rival is in the audience wearing a fake mustache? It almost felt like a live action Spy vs. Spy movie for a minute there the way shit was heading. But it actually ended up building to something, and I felt like the overall illusion of the movie was pretty damn satisfactory.

Better than The Illusionist imo
