I think what I was referring to was that FFT was the popularity tipping point for tactical RPG's, even though it wasn't the first (there were earlier Fire Emblems too). FFT did for tactical RPG's what Street Fighter II did for fighters and FF7 did for JRPG's.
But I've always regretted missing Tactics Ogre on the 64 (never owned the system), because I LOVED the original for SNES. I metagamed the fuck outta Ogre Battle, and I'm kinda sad I've never really seen another strategy game like it.
