But yeah as you're playing through the game, the story got overshadowed by the huge world that they've created, so exploration and sidequests became the main focus imo. XII was supposedly set hundreds of years before FFT anyway, this goes pretty in-depth http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ivalice#History_of_Ivalice
