It's closer in feel to a game like Fire Emblem (unique characters with specific roles/classes)**, but without the punishing difficulty.
The story took tons of liberties with the Joan of Arc story but was still fun to follow.
I really loved the skills system though. Simple to learn, but had some surprising depth. IIRC, each class/character has a limited number of slots to equip skills (active, passive, stat boosts, etc., much like equipment in most RPG's), so you need to weigh which ones you use more. But those same skills can be combined to either increase their strength or create new skills. There's a limited number of skills, so you have to consider if you're willing to combine some useful ones for one class in order to get better skills for another class.
It's been a long while since I've played the game though, so my memory on most of the game is pretty hazy.
** Sidenote: I fucking love Fire Emblem, and that may be my favorite tactics franchise after having only played two of the games (the ones on Gamecube/Wii). Whenever I'm bored, I still contemplate another run through those games. I don't have a DS, but the new one is absolutely the first game I'd get, and I'd get a Wii U if they released one for that system.
