2742124, Scottie Pippen was top 3?
Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Thu Jul-01-21 05:05 PM
What year?

Only argument I can see is 93-94 when he was a distant, distant 3rd in MVP voting

And that year 3rd place was really Shaq

The next year he was 7th in voting.

Sidenote: Drexler>Pippen

If you do, then you need to get medical treatment.

Pippen was possibly the best player in the world during the 93-94 season.

Also, Clyde Drexler? Who did Clyde shut down? When did he play defense?
What offense did he run?

Scottie out of his prime took a bunch of young troublemakers to the WCF. Drexler road
the coattails of Hakeem to a chip.

Olajuwon makes that statement laughable

Pippen's help on 93-94 Bulls>>Drexler's help on his WCF and Finals Blazers teams

Maybe you weren't watching basketball yet
2742131, Pippen’s help?
Posted by allStah, Thu Jul-01-21 06:03 PM
Pippen led the Bulls in points, assists, rebounds, steals and mins played
that season.

You sure you weren’t too busy watching The Nanny when the Bulls
were playing?

When did Clyde Drexler ever do that?

Pippen made 10 all defensive teams....10

How many did Clyde make?

Drexler took a bunch of regular guys to the NBA Finals and to a WCF the year before.

Pippen took his team to the Finals or nah?

Terry Porter, Kevin Duckworth and Jerome Kersey were regular guys? that's 2 All-stars and a pretty descent scorer.

It’s entertaining.

Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Thu Jul-01-21 11:21 PM
To be clear…yes?

Terry Porter was a good player, tough and smart. Might compare him to J. Holliday or Mike Conley. A good player but at best a fringe top 10 guy at his position and I'm hesitant to give him that because:

Magic
Kevin Johnson
Isaiah
Mo Cheeks
Stockton
Price
Hardaway
Payton

He was in that Fats Lever/Doc Rivers/Sleepy Floyd range…a good player

Jerome Kersey was Harrison Barnes, maybe? With better defense and less athleticism

Kevin Duckworth was decent, really, that's it. All jokes aside, if you were watching at the time, he was a player who did pretty well in the regular season and folded hard in the playoffs. He was never better than pretty good and he disappeared against top shelf competition.

Solid scorer, bad rebounder, poor defender with a league-wide reputation for being soft. He was not aggressive and was outplayed by the Bulls centers in the Finals, which says it all, cause they were JAG's.

He averaged 11ppg and 6 rebounds in the playoffs

10ppg the next season

None of these guys are as good as Toni Kukoc or Horace Grant, even.

And Clyde didn't just get to one conference finals. He took them to a WCF against the Lakers(where they force a game 7 at home if Terry Porter hits a wide open jumper), then the next year to the Finals.

2742163, Drexler had a dumb ass coach tho...young Rick Adelman
Posted by Castro, Fri Jul-02-21 01:54 AM
Its no surprise that Adelman had two of the most talented finals teams that could not get over the hump. Both teams if properly coached could have won at least one chip. (Blazers and later the Kings)

they gonna give you about the same as far as points, assists and rebounds, you putting your money on Clyde being lockdown on defense?

2 ways of looking at this:

If we are talking about straight out of college, it's obviously Drexler no question. Scottie became an all-time great but he wasn't one until he ended up in the right place with the right people (Phil and MJ), and even then he showed time and time again that he was not a leader. From the migraine, to the Kukoc shot, he wasn't mentally tough out the box, and maybe never was, period.

If we are talking about PRIME Scottie after he has spent years becoming the best version of himself on an all-time great team, it's debatable. But I am still going Drexler. Drexler was a better scorer, better passer, and a much better leader. Scottie can score and pass too, and his defense was a level that Drexler could never get to…so I could see an argument.

That said, I can find other people to play elite defense, I would rather have my teams best player also be a great leader and mentally tough.

Drexler might really be the most underrated player of his era. He suffered from playing in the same era as MJ, where I personally think Scottie FLOURISHED because he spent those years with MJ. If Drexler spent his whole career with Hakeem, they would have been the ones getting five or six rings.

ok

I can just imagine the side-eye you would give people if you performed excellent on your job for years and received multiple accolades for that good work only to have someone bring up the 3 times you had a bad day and label you as mentally soft.

Sure…but what is my job and who I am being compared to?

Scottie was a at the highest level of an extremely competitive professional field. One of the things that the field demands is mental toughness at the most difficult moments. This is part of what separates these incredibly accomplished professionals from each other, let alone regular people.

If a brain surgeon has to leave the operating theater several times over the course of his career because he lost his temper or was overwhelmed by anxiety, I'm sure that other elite brain surgeons would see it as a knock on his resume.

We are not just asking if Scottie was a great player or a good teammate. We are comparing him to the best to even suit up. I think it is relevant. Doesn't mean Scottie sucks, but Drexler from what I saw and know, was a better leader and mentally tougher player.
2742166, It’s funny to hear you say that Clyde was the better passer
Posted by allStah, Fri Jul-02-21 06:26 AM
when him and Scottie both avg 5 a game.

It’s funny to hear you say that Clyde was tougher and
a better leader, when Scottie lead the bulls further than
Mike did without Scottie with zero all stars. Scottie played
game 6 of the 1998 NBA finals with an injured back, where he could
barley walk. However, Jordan couldn’t do it by himself,
so Scottie went out there as a decoy.

Rasheed Wallace, Zach Randolph, etc all matured under
Scottie Pippen. Scottie took a team full of jailbirds to the
WCF. Clyde wouldn’t have been able to handle that.

I’m not sure what your agenda is, but it is all over the place.

Watched them play. As I made clear, it's not some huge gap.

Cool speculation, but Clyde took less talented Blazers teams farther than that. And that team was desperately lacking in leadership.

It's really not. Clyde Drexler is underrated. Scottie Pippen was at one point, but isn't anymore. You just disagree.
2742174, If you feel Clyde is underrated, then make a post about that.

You don’t have to degrade Scottie to upgrade Clyde.

That’s where you fail.

94 and 95 specifically because Jordan wasn’t there taking up a spot.

Probably more like top 5 or 6, but really how do you compare a Pippen to a center like Shaq or Robinson, or to a Karl Malone?

You could argue he was the second best perimeter player in that time, after Jordan(best when MJ retired). Drexler was older and declining a bit by then. Guys like Penny and Hill were coming up but you probably have to still take Pippen over them at that point. He was probably more valuable than any of the “true” PG’s, given all the things he could do out there. Who else is there?
2742322, Agree with this

A lot of guys on the perimeter were very good. None at Pip’s level.
Barkley comes to mind as another elite at that time. He was still a PF tho.
2742328, Barkley wasn’t quite as good in that 94-97 time

Top 10 or so. He was top 3 himself from like 88-93.

Perimeter sure, but I'm talking about out of everyone in the league.

There was one year I can see the argument and even then I would give the third spot to Shaq.
2742346, how would this even be an argument between the two?

I can only guess that it's because Shaq was a rookie but yeah, I still don't see picking Scottie over him.

years.
