2171936, The Born Ready post
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Apr-30-13 12:03 PM

There hasn't been a post dedicated to Lance Stephenson.

This is a bit late, but we need one

Not sure if this qualifies as me claiming stock or
having agenda priority...it probably does, let me
think about this. If you're mad, you should have made
the post first.

He's pretty much a lock for Most Improved Player
next season

He's loved by analytics people because of his +/- which
for a while was completely absurd

He's a backcourt Artest minus the crazies. He's not
quite the defender that Artest was but is a bit ahead
of where Artest was offensively

He's like JR Rider, but doesn't gun quite that much and
wants you to lose too much to devolve into a weed head
or an alcoholic. That's right: he doesn't want to win.
Born Ready wants YOU TO LOSE. Its fantastic.

He's like a better, more skilled Deshawn Stevenson, which
should automatically make you a fan. D. Stevenson's had a
great career just because he's mean, can hit a three and
antagonize on defense. Imagine what Born Ready will do.

He's shockingly unselfish. Everyone knew he was good. Everybody
thought he'd be a chucker. And he is sometimes. But not nearly
as much as people thought. He passes and crashes the glass.

He's from Brooklyn. He pretty much cancels out Sebastian
Telfair's problems and reinvigorates the myth that New York
produces cold-blooded killers on the court.

The article should have been about how two black 2-guards
who can score and have attitude are actually nothing alike.

OR

They should have just written two different articles.

The author looked for an excuse to write about Ricky Davis
and Born Ready and forcefed a dumb false equivalency. He
probably tried to write 2 pieces, and the editor was like
"nah, we only have room for one piece."

It did a disservice to Lance Stephenson and actually REINFORNCES
the stereotypes that he DOESN'T fit. Awful article.

Package Waiters and someone else and make that shit
happen

He'd be PERFECT:

If you foul Kyrie too hard he'll fuck you up

He can hit an open shot, create his own at times but
doesn't need to dominate the ball to be effective

He can even guard some 1s and give Kyrie a break on D

As if people didn't think Ron Ron would be a doofy bamma
in the NBA. They sure did. WRONG.

BR good for 15-5-5 next year; he'll be efficient, he'll
defend his ass off...watch. +/- will be great AGAIN because
he's SMART

Just like how Klay's lightskinnedness breeds a confidence
that the world is great and his shots will fall and they
do

Born Ready practices like the other team bought Kerry Washington

The Artest comparisons are real, he's barking at veterans
in practice for not hustling and everything ALREADY

I wrote him off as being a poor decision maker. I agree the Ricky Davis comparison is poor...I think he is a more athletic, skilled Mario Elie...and what you said about him and Ky-Ky is true. That would be a great backcourt. Of course he could come home and play the 2 next to Felton as well...with him, Tyson and Shump, sheeit...that would be a stingy Knicks lineup.

Your "agenda" was successful because you preyed on the
false hopes of Knicks fans while understanding basketball
well enough to know that Pacers were a terrible matchup
for the Knicks. The Pacers TEAM beat Carmelo (led by a
winning performance by BORN READY)

You're trying to spring that into a Paul George agenda

Nobody cares about Paul George, though. Like, at all.

You're going to have to pick a better comparison-

2183244, That was a 2003 AOL Sports Board caliber double standard.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon May-20-13 07:13 AM

I'm honestly disrespected and am close to demanding
an apology.

If you wanna say George is good, I'll join you.

If you wanna shit on Carmelo because he's not as good
as Lebron, then you're by yourself.

But don't disrespect the technique. Look at what you
just did here:

-When Carmelo is pulling his dick out and pissing
all over George, as he was the whole game, "Carmelo
just got hot."

You say this in an attempt to diminish the role of
Carmelo's goodness in the performance. Its not that George
couldn't stop Carmelo (which he couldn't). Carmelo just had
a random case of the hots.

When Carmelo goes cold in the 4th, however, "Carmelo got
locked down by George."

So when Carmelo is pissing on George, Carmelo "just got hot."

When Carmelo was not, he got "locked down by George."

So the role of Carmelo's goodness is mitigated. The role of
George's goodness is elevated.

Just stop.

Even stranger: the pivotal play of the game happened when Carmelo
blew past his defender (forgot who) and got blocked at the rim
by HIBBERT.

George was almost completely irrelevant in that game versus
Carmelo. Carmelo basically did what he wanted. IF YOU HINGE
your agenda on George being able to stop Carmelo, then game 6
was a huge dent. You'd better backtrack and shift to George
being a crafty, clever ball handler and intangible wizard. He
shot horribly, made poor decisions with the ball and got burned
by Carmelo in Game 6. Plus, the team leader in their darkest
hour was BORN READY.

And this is a BORN READY post.

2183248, Their respective "goodness" when it MATTERED MOST is what I'll go on
Posted by Basaglia, Mon May-20-13 07:22 AM

Then you gargle for 20 seconds. DO NOT SPIT.

Then do a light swish and swirl.

Then spit.

Do that 5 times for the first 3 days. Space them apart
by a couple of hours. The spaces don't need to be equal.
Just as long as you get distribution throughout the day.
And of course, one of them has to be in the evening before

After the third day, just 4 times a day for the rest of

Let us know how its going. I think we'll have to start

Odds are, we'll start to see changes in your behavior.

Stephenson Gives Indiana Energy, Points and Signature Play
By ZACH SCHONBRUN

INDIANAPOLIS — There were four minutes left, the game was tied and the ball was in Carmelo Anthony’s hands — a circumstance the Knicks would not complain much about late in Game 6 on Saturday. But with Paul George on his left hip, and Roy Hibbert looming in the paint, Anthony tried to skip a pass over his shoulder to J. R. Smith on the wing.

And Lance Stephenson read the play all the way.

Stephenson pounced and intercepted the fluttering pass, raced down court with only Smith to beat, and drew a foul as he went up for a layup. The ball dropped through the net. Stephenson pointed up toward the overjoyed crowd.

The steal became a signature moment of Saturday’s 106-99 Pacers win, and perhaps the foremost play of Stephenson’s young career. The Knicks would not score again for another 80 seconds, and by then Indiana had a 99-92 lead.

“I thought Lance’s steal, that and-one, that really got us some momentum,” forward David West said.

Stephenson, West added, was “ultimately the one that got us over the hump,” scoring 25 points with 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line.

He scored 16 points in the first half and then all 9 of his remaining points in the fourth, pushing the ball up the floor, at times a bit out of control. But his energy was infectious and his determination clear.

“He just didn’t want to lose,” Knicks guard Iman Shumpert said. “He was going to push the ball until someone stopped him, and we didn’t stop him.”

Stephenson, a Brooklyn native, struggled in Game 5, going 1 of 7 from the field with 4 points, tying his playoffs low. He looked uncomfortable filling in for George Hill at point guard, and Saturday he reverted back to what he does best: flying toward the rim for rebounds and dunks.

“I couldn’t wait for this game,” Stephenson said. “I couldn’t sleep. I was focused tonight on playing my game and doing whatever I could to help my teammates.”

Anthony committed three turnovers and scored just 4 points in the fourth quarter. On his fourth-quarter performance, he said: “I really don’t know. I have to sit back and think about that.”

Stephenson scored all nine of his baskets within three feet of the rim, supplying the Pacers offensive energy and putting pressure on Knicks center Tyson Chandler, who ended up fouling out. And when the game could not be tighter, Stephenson stepped forward and made a play to carry the Pacers to the next round.

“Unbelievable,” Pacers Coach Frank Vogel said. “He’s got no playoff experience whatsoever, but he has some of the best basketball instincts I’ve been around. He’s a gamer.”

End of regulation they are in any position to win because George comes up with stops on LeBron.

Oh, he had some turnovers? Stephenson handled the ball much less and had four.

George kept them in the game and was their best player over the course of 53 minutes. Stephenson was maybe their fourth best player, and I'd have to give that some thought.
2185422, BR's great plays were mental. PG's great plays were physical.

PG was just long and flexible and athletic. That's what
he did well.

He made the dumbest plays of the game, though. Like, by
far. And he lost the game by himself.

Born Ready kept coming up in the announcers chat because
they kept noticing little dope shit he was doing.

The real big play for Indiana was the Augustin 3, and that was 99%
Born Ready

And Born Ready was crashing the glass, giving full effort.

Y'all fucked up here....y'all should have just let this go...

I may have missed that painfully irrelevant stat line on my screen but I believe he just fouled out with 4 points and 3 rebounds or some shit.

That doesn't really tell the story of how bad he stunk. He managed to make a real negative impact and foul out in less than 30 minutes of action. Aborted ready?

You can't have it both ways homie-

Lebron is the best player in the galaxy-

When he guards a guy he's bigger and more athletic
than that guy is in trouble....anyone

AND BR had to GUARD Lebron, which is plain unfair,
and was why he fouled out

BR drew Lebron away from Nyquil, who still vanished
in the 3rd quarter

you're losing on all sides, man. pg is about to be that dude, lebron knows it, he's been better on bron than born flummoxed, melo is overrated and not even on the same planet as lebron and you should spend less time on fan fiction about another in a series of forgettable nyc products.

Nyquil was an embarrassment this series, let his team down,

He's not a Joe Johnson/Rudy Gay who were given mega contracts
on skill set and upside, not because of team productivity

BR is valued because he thrives playing in a TEAM and plays
5 different roles in 5 different days for his team

You can play winning basketball with him

He can score on and off the ball, can dominate
a game scoring 20 points or 5 points

And his offensive game is still IMPROVING...he's spent
his early years honing his actual IQ, all around game

Stuff like his jumper will come (its already improving)

He can spell your point guard, can lead a second team
offensively, is small but can disrupt many 3s on the
wing defensively

He's a serious motherfucking basketball player

The One Free Agent the Chicago Bulls Must Land This Offseason
By Kelly Scaletta, Featured Columnist
Mar 1, 2014

Strap on your fake Chicago Bulls GM hat and pretend you need to sign one free agent this offseason. Who is it going to be? While many are going to propose Carmelo Anthony, allow me to introduce a better alternative: Lance Stephenson.

I understand the thought that the Bulls need a second superstar to help Derrick Rose carry the team. I get the appeal of Anthony. Hes a great player. Over the last two seasons, the only three players with a higher player efficiency rating (PER) than Anthonys 25.0 are LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul. (http://bkref.com/tiny/a6O6o)

In a perfect world, where the Bulls could just add Anthony to the roster without any subtraction, its a great idea to bring him on board. But thats not the case. There would be a heavy cost to acquire him.

Stephenson would meet all the needs the Bulls have, fit better in the Bulls system and come at a much cheaper price.

This is a case where Plan B needs to be promoted over Plan A.

...

How Stephenson Meets the Bulls Needs

During the Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks broadcast, February 27, on TNT, Steve Kerr initiated a discussion that Joakim Noah is now a top-10 player in the league. The other broadcasters agreed.

On February 28, Sekou Smith, who compiles NBA.coms Race to the MVP Ladder (http://www.nba.com/mvp-ladder) had Noah in the 10th spot for the second week in a row, saying,

"The Bulls have won seven of their last eight games with Noah driving them from end to end. He's the backbone of this franchise now, having assumed that leadership role during what has been a trying time for Derrick Rose, the franchise, the entire city of Chicago and the legion of Bulls fans worldwide. Noah does whatever the Bulls need him to do -- scoring, rebounding, defending, blocking shots. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau knows that Noah helped keep this team together after the Luol Deng trade and acknowledges that Noah has become its driving force."

Noah is literally in the discussion as a top-10 player in the league. One can debate whether he *should* be or not, but he is being discussed. That makes him a star.

No, what the Bulls need is not a second star. They have two stars. Their need is a second scorer.

The two things are not synonymous. Anthony is a star because hes a great scorer. Noah is a star in spite of the fact that hes not a scorer. Stephenson is not a star, but hes a solid scorer, particularly where the Bulls need helpa second player who can handle the ball, create shots and get to the rim.

This one table convinced me Stephenson was the best way to go. Look at what Anthony does inside the restricted area in comparison to Stephenson.

Carmelo Anthony vs. Lance Stephenson Inside the Restricted Area

Player | FG | FGA | FG% | Asstd | Unasstd

Carmelo Anthony | 157 | 272 | 0.577 | 50 | 107
Lance Stephenson | 175 | 251 | 0.697 | 70 | 105

If one just looks at production, Stephenson is actually better at the rim than Anthony. He is more efficient and just as good at getting there on his own. He has more assisted field goals, nearly as many unassisted ones (hes tied for 10th in the NBA) and has a higher field-goal percentage.

And, for those who think that stats dont tell you everything, heres the visual.

Lance Stephenson's "Houdini" Ball Fake and Score : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KxRF6L8bOw
Play of the Day Nov 23, 2012 - Lance Stephenson : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3sXN6RiG9I

Stephenson might not be a superstar like Anthony is, but in terms of filling the Bulls need for a player who can create shots off the dribble, drive to the rim and take some of the pressure off of Rose, he would be just as effective as Anthony.

Now granted, Anthony is a better scorer in other aspects, but those arent needs the Bulls have. Those are niceties, not necessities. The point here isnt to argue that Stephenson is just as good of a scorer, but that hes just as good in the area they need scoring the most.

You dont need a bazooka to shoot a bothersome squirrel. Would it do the job? Sure! But so would a pellet gun, and the pellet gun is cheaper and wouldnt risk as much collateral damage. Anthony would fill the Bulls needs, certainly, but so would Stephenson.

...

Stephenson Fits Better

Anthony is a better overall scorer and rebounder, but Stephenson is better in some areas, too.

The completeness of Stephensons gamea triple-double threat (http://bkref.com/tiny/wEah6) who plays both ends of the ballmakes him a better fit for the Bulls.

Stephenson is averaging 14.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Players who can beat those numbers this season are limited to LeBron James and Kevin Durant. (http://bkref.com/tiny/3zbDC)

Stephenson is not the scorer those two areand Im not going to even try to pretend he isbut he gets the points where the Bulls need them. And, he does it as an all-around player who facilitates and doesnt stop the ball.

Lance Stephenson's AMAZING In-Air Circus Assist : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOZkU6_8Ezs

One argument I get on twitter about Stephenson is that hes just playing well because hes in the right system, but how is that going to change in Chicago? If anything, that should be a plus. Hes a proven system player. Chicago is a system team.

Stephenson is thriving in a one-star system predicated on sharing the ball. The concern should be whether Anthony can play in a system when hes not actually the system.

Stephenson, unlike Anthony, has shown that he can have an impact on games without being a ball-dominant player. He is sixth in win shares among players who have a usage percentage below 20 percent. He leads all shooting guards in that regard. (http://bkref.com/tiny/maKc6)

Lance Stephenson EMBARRASSES JR Smith : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXZucq4SDr0

Furthermore, hes a much better defensive player who has shown a commitment to play in a defensive system. Per 82games.com, Stephensons opponents PER is 10.6. (http://www.82games.com/1314/1314IND.HTM) Anthonys opponents post a PER of 14.1. (http://www.82games.com/1314/1314NYK.HTM) While such defensive measures are, in part, an issue of team defense, a reputation for bad defense is one that has followed Anthony through the years. (http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/2214/testing-the-theory-that-carmelo-anthony-is-a-lousy-defender)

Lance Stephenson is a round peg filling a round hole. Anthony might be a prettier, glossier, gold-layered, diamond-crusted, platinum-set peg, but hes a square one.

Why bother trying to force him in when you can just fill the hole with right-shaped peg?

...

Stephenson Comes at a Much Cheaper Price

According to Amin Elhassan of ESPN Insider (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10525164/nba-ranking-top-30-free-agents-2014?refresh=true&refresh=true) the cost of Carmelo Anthony would be 23.5 million per year, and the cost of Stephenson would be $9.5 million per year. For the math-challenged, thats a difference of $14 million.

Thats not just a difference in the accounting book. Thats a difference on the court, because thats $14 million in one player that cant be filled by others as a result of Anthonys contract.

For the Bulls to afford Anthony, it would require losing Carlos Boozer, Taj Gibson, Nikola Mirotic, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the Charlotte pick (No. 16 projected). They would be able to add Anthony and their own pick.

For the Bulls to acquire Stephenson, it would require amnestying Boozer and trading Dunleavy. In addition to Stephenson, they would add the Charlotte pick, and, believe it or not, Mirotic, while keeping Gibson.

So, its not a question of Anthony or Stephenson. Its a question of Anthony or Stephenson, Gibson, Mirotic and the Charlotte pick. Heres how I got that.

If we work out max raises for Stephenson, his first year would cost the Bulls $8.9 million to reach the four-year, $38 million projected by Elhassan (who uses DeMar DeRozans contract as a gauge).

Stephenson, contrary to what some have him listed as, is an unrestricted free agent (http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-growing-legend-of-lance-stephenson/) so the Indiana Pacers couldn't match. And, they will be limited in what they can offer him.

However, they are already committed to $66.8 million (http://data.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/pacers.jsp) and after accounting for cap holds, they would be over $77 million if they matched. This doesn't include Danny Granger, Evan Turner or LaVoy Allen. Thats well over the tax limit and even over the apron, where the tax becomes more punitive.

That could be further complicated if Paul George qualifies for the "Rose Rule" (he probably will), which will raise the value of his contract. The Pacers will owe $71.9 million. Giving Stephenson a market-value contract would have them well over the tax threshold.

They havent paid the tax since 2005-06. (http://www.shamsports.com/2014/02/the-tax-paid-by-title-winners.html) Its unlikely they would pay such a hefty bill to keep Stephenson. They are still a small market team after all.

So, if Stephenson takes $8.9 million out of the Bulls cap space for the first year of his contract, it leaves $6.4 million after cap holds to offer Mirotic in the first year. Once again, using max raises, that would come out to a four-year, $27.2 million deal to offer him.

bwin MVP for October: Nikola Mirotic, Real Madrid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af3jTTp76bI

Also, according to Eurohoops, Mirotic is ready to come to Chicago for $20 million. (http://www.eurohoops.net/2014/02/dunks/42988) Some expect that wont be enough. However, the Bulls can pay up to $27.2 million over four years. Either way, its enough for Mirotic to buy out his Real Madrid contract with the 2.5 million Euros ($3.4 million US) he owesand make more money than he is now.

"Real Madrid already knows that Nikola Mirotic is leaving the club for the NBA. Jan Vesely and Doellman main options. ( va @Hectorfernandez)"
https://twitter.com/jondelapresa/statuses/436639747264757761

Mirotics best friend, Hector Fernandez, says that Real Madrid is preparing for his departure, per Jon de la Presa, who covers the ACB. That suggests that Mirotic isnt planning to play hardball in negotiations, especially since he doesnt have much to bargain with, other than staying in Spain.

Chicago doesnt have to outbid the NBA free market, they only have to pay Mirotic enough to buy out his contract in Spain and still make at least what he is presently earning.

And hes worth it. He was named the ACB MVP for the second season in a row. He shot 53.8 percent. And then theres this form Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com,

"One executive, after seeing Mirotic play, said the power forward originally from Montenegro would go top two or three for sure if he was in the 2014 draft and maybe even one. Mirotic could be in Chicago next season."

Maybe even one. In a draft that is possibly the deepest in a generation of players, Mirotic might go first if he were available. The Bulls may very well be sitting on the 2014-15 Rookie of the Year.

This is a team that has played surprisingly well after their awful start. Since January 1, no team in the NBA has won more games than the Bulls. And its not just because theyre beating Eastern Conference pushovers, either.

Over the last 25 percent of their games, they are tied for the eighth hardest schedule, with their opponents boasting a .519 winning percentage.

Im not trying to make an argument that theyre the best team in the NBA, but I will argue they arent in dire need of an overhaul.

Intentionally mixing metaphors here, if you go all in for Anthony, youre not just filling the hole with the wrong peg, youre digging other holes in order to do it.

...

Remember, youre the GM. You have a team that has won as much as anyone over a two-month period. Next season you can upgrade Dunleavy to Stephenson and Boozer to Mirotic. You can fill the two biggest needs in doing sodriving and three-point shooting.

You can also add a No. 16 pick and a No. 19 pick.

And, just for giggles, you have a former league MVP returning.

That would give you a deeper roster with a starting five all under the age 30, and three of your premier players, Rose, Stephenson and Mirotic, all under 26.

Or, you can gut your roster and rebuild around a 30-year-old Anthony.

The responsibility of a GM isnt to get a team a second star, its to improve the team. The Bulls could land Anthony, win the battle and lose the war. The aggregate cost of him, in terms of both players and money, could end up being greater than the reward he provides.

On the other hand, the relatively cheap cost of Stephenson could allow the Bulls to flesh out a younger, deeper team that maintains its chemistry, has a defensive mentality matching the coach and fills out its weaknesses.

The Stephenson signing would make the Bulls a better, younger, more complete team, and thats why hes the one player they have to get in this years offseason.

Born Ready was ruining that team with his attitude.

Born Ready was holding back Nyquil.

Born Ready is a cancer and will make the Bobcats suck.

2389145, Born ready leading the team in rebounds
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Wed Nov-12-14 02:07 PM

Reddits is mad:
Lance Stephenson is currently 10th in the league in rebounding (10.9 REB/G). Meanwhile Big Al is averaging 6.8 REB/G (averaged 10.8 REB last year).

This was the key excerpt from his grantland 1 on 1 with Zach Lowe

Lowe: You gotta admit you take rebounds from teammates sometimes — and that lets you start the break. But that was a source of frustration in Indiana — a guy would be all set to catch a rebound, and you’d fly in from nowhere and almost take it out of their hands. Does that annoy teammates?

Born Ready: That means I’m hustling more than them. If I’m taking your rebound, you gotta hustle more.

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/qa-lance-stephenson-on-life-in-charlotte-his-rap-songs-and-video-bombs/

His career as a Pacer ended after that series, when Stephenson hesitated on Indiana’s five-year, $44 million offer. Indiana responded by signing a bunch of other players, nudging their payroll against the luxury tax as Stephenson lingered in free agency. The Hornets, having missed on Gordon Hayward, gambled on Stephenson after a hush-hush meeting in Las Vegas during summer league that included an appearance from Michael Jordan.

Stephenson sat down with Grantland in Charlotte to discuss his old team, his new digs, and his NBA habits.

You like Charlotte so far? Found a place yet?

Yeah, I love Charlotte. I found a place like two blocks away.

We talking a penthouse? Good views?

Nice little view. Yeah.

So, did you talk to your Pacers teammates, or did they talk to you, during your free agency? Did anyone offer advice or urge you to stay or whatever?

I reached out to them to tell them the decision I had made.

So only after.

After I made it.

So you didn’t reach out to them at all or vice versa during the process itself?

No, I didn’t. I kept it to myself.

They’re in a bad way now, with all those injuries. You call up your old buddies there to wish them well?

Nah. I’m just focused on us getting better, making sure we’re good — and that me and my teammates are on the same page.

Before that meeting with the Hornets in Vegas, did you still think, even though the Pacers had signed C.J. Miles and some other guys, that there was some way you would end up back in Indiana? That somehow it would get done?

By then, I knew I wasn’t going to go back the Pacers. I had the mind-set that there was just no way for me to come back. I was just moving forward.

Did the Lakers get involved at all? I didn’t get why they didn’t go after you and a few other guys.

They called me a couple of times, but they never followed through.

You’re 12-of-45 so far from the field. You haven’t made a 3 yet. Is this the worst slump of your career?

Uh … It’s a process. When you change from a different team, and you’re just trying to get comfortable and learn the offense. You’re gonna have slumps. Some guys come in right away and fit right in, but right now, I’m taking my time and learning the offense. Hopefully my shot will start falling.

That groin injury in the preseason probably didn’t help.

Yeah. That throws everything off.

On a lot of possessions, you’ll be on the weak side behind the 3-point line, someone will swing the ball to you, and you’ll be pretty wide open. But you don’t shoot. You like to hold the ball, survey the floor, and set up for a drive. You shot 35 percent from deep last year. Why don’t you just shoot? They’re good shots!

I’m gonna shoot.

So you’re aware there are some good looks you pass up?

I’m gonna shoot.

Have the coaches here talked to you about it?

I’m just getting comfortable. I’m gonna start shooting. I just gotta concentrate on my shot and follow through. I’ve just been missing, been struggling. It just takes time, and I’m gonna get it right.

It’s interesting: Coaches want everyone to make instant decisions when you get the ball. You like to hold it a bit sometimes, pull out some crossovers, and go to work. The offense kind of stops, but you can get to the rim that way. Is it tough to find the right balance?

I just do whatever the defense gives me. If the defense gives me a drive, I try to create my own shot. If the defense collapses on me, I try to find the open man. It’s all just my instincts.

You had a couple of monster putbacks the other night against Miami. Do you enjoy offensive rebounding maybe more than a typical guard?

If I’m not scoring the other way, I’m gonna find a way to score. I’m gonna find a way to get involved and help my team win.

You beat Dwyane Wade for both of them — he didn’t box you out. Was that a little extra satisfying, after all the battles you guys have had?

Wade’s a great player. It’s tough playing against him. I just stay focused and do whatever it takes to win.

The Hornets play your rap song during pregame. Did you ask them to do that?

It’s just a great thing they’re doing. I just hope they keep doing it. It gets me hyped before the game.

Any other songs in the works?

Coming soon, coming soon. Yeah.

So you’ve written them?

They’re already done. I’m just waiting for the right time to pull it out.

You talk in the song a lot about “bottles,” and the video is basically guys partying. You’re young, with lots of money now. Is it hard to balance work and fun? Do you have rules during the season — like you can’t stay out past a certain hour the day before a game?

I have a lot of fun, but I don’t even drink.

Not at all?

No. I just said all that in the song to be cool, and to relate the environment I’m in a lot now. I don’t drink or smoke — none of that.

Not even in the offseason?

No. Not at all. I just like to party and have fun with my friends, and just be out a lot. That’s why I said that in my song.

You didn’t make the All-Star team last year, and it seemed to make you kind of angry. Is that still a goal, or after that experience, do you try not to think about it anymore?

It’s a goal, but you can’t worry about that during the season, because it tends to make you focus on that. You do too much and you start making a lot of mistakes. I just have to stay focused and all that will come.

Does Larry Bird still talk a lot of trash? In public, he says basically nothing.

Yeah. He talks a lot once you get to know him. He’s a cool guy. Of course he talks trash. If that’s you, that’ll always be you. He talks a lot, and he’s always challenging us to 3-point contests.

Can he still beat you all?

If he can stay in one spot, he can shoot it.

There have already been some complaints here about your body language — like when you don’t get the ball and someone else shoots, you kind of flap your arms, look up to the heavens, and your shoulders sink down. That can rub some guys the wrong way. Do you realize you’re doing it? Has anyone approached you about it here yet?

I’m just trying to win. I don’t feel myself doing that when it happens. It’s just my reaction. Nobody has complained about it yet.

You gotta admit you take rebounds from teammates sometimes — and that lets you start the break. But that was a source of frustration in Indiana — a guy would be all set to catch a rebound, and you’d fly in from nowhere and almost take it out of their hands. Does that annoy teammates?

That means I’m hustling more than them. If I’m taking your rebound, you gotta hustle more.

It does have the benefit of you running the break right away, without an outlet pass.

That’s what I like to do. I like to try to get quick points, and try to make something happen quick in the offense. That’s why I try to get all those rebounds and push it.

You are the most demonstrative pointer in the league on the break. When you have the ball, you scream and point at where everyone should go. It’s funny to watch.

I just try to get people in the right spots, and try to open up the floor so everyone can succeed.

You like a fancy pass now and then.

Oh, yeah.

I’m talking through the legs, no-look, even a couple of backward overhead passes. Do coaches ever say, “Hey, a normal pass will do fine”?

I mean, nah. Nobody has said that yet. I just try to trick the defense. When you act like you’re attacking and you pass it, that opens it up for your guy to get an easier shot.

It does get the home crowd going. Do you think that matters — that crowd noise can really change a game?

Yeah, when you get the crowd into it, it actually helps us a lot. We feel their energy. When the crowd is yelling, the other team starts to mess up a little bit. When you get the crowd involved, it’s an easier game for us.

Does it count as a no-look pass if I look at my target, throw the ball to him, and only then look away as I’m throwing it? I think that’s a fake no-look pass.

Oh yeah, that counts. That’s a no-look. Definitely.

I don’t know.

If it fools the defense, it counts as a no-look.

How good can you guys be this season? You must notice Cleveland struggling early, right?

This team is really, really good. We got a lot of pieces. We just gotta focus and stay locked in on defense, and play off our defense. The thing that made this team great last year was that they played off their defense.

The scheme is very similar to what you played with the Pacers, right — dropping back on the pick-and-roll, etc.?

Right about the same.

Are you aware that your video-bomb with Derek Fisher became a big Internet thing? Did you know the camera was there? That was priceless.

Oh, yeah, I saw that. It was so funny. Stuff happens during the game. I actually fell down right there, and they happened to have the camera right on Derek Fisher, and I just popped up.

Did all your friends email and text that to you?

Oh, no. I see everything that’s on the Internet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hornets coach Steve Clifford believes Lance Stephenson's problems adjusting during his first season in Charlotte are partly due to the guard's struggles to live up to external expectations.

"To be fair, one of the things that's made it more difficult for him is that he came here and people proclaimed him as the next superstar," Clifford said Wednesday. "He's not a star. He's a guy that has talent to become a star. To be a star in this league, you have to do it over years."

i just so happened to read that article back-to-back with this one:

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bulls/post/_/id/20789/thibodeau-incredible-butler-is-a-star

"He's been incredible," said Thibodeau, whose Bulls lost 114-109 to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. "He's a star, and he does it on both ends of the floor. He's just an amazing player. We've had him play the point, we've had him play the 2, the 3, and tonight he played the 4. And he hasn't had any opportunity to practice the 4. So he just got out there, he's smart, he's tough, he does whatever the team needs, and he found a way to help lead us into coming back and having a shot at the end."

Although the 25-year-old continues to put up All-Star-type numbers, he doesn't want any part of the star label.

"I'm not a star," Butler said. "I'm a good role player on a really, really good team. A really, really deep team. I like role players. 'Star' has never been next to Jimmy Butler's name, it never will be. I'll always be just an under-the-radar dog."

"Born Ready" could thrive when he had no expectations placed on him...now he was put in a situation where he was brought on board to assume a bigger role on a team that was looking to improve on what they did last season

You know if management is ready to dump this dude right now when it's only two months into the season lets me know he must really be a cancer too - you can tolerate a dude like him when your team is winning but when the team is struggling and he's being disruptive you gotta ship him out

If it's not working out, it's not working out. There aren't many headcases in the league that would fuck up a decent situation like this. Most actual professionals would treat it as an outlier.

I think making a pretty public thing out of this--no information gets out by accident--says exactly where they stand. Either they want to put some fear into him or they want to dump his ass to get a do-over. Either way, it's a reflection on him and not their organization. They have had issues with other guys, it didn't stop them from getting Jefferson on the open market.

Posted by bentagain, Tue Jun-16-15 09:32 AM
makes sense IMO

Barnes doesn't give you much on offense (although, he gives you more than 18%)

so trading him for Lance is a lateral move at worst

he'll give you the same defensive effort

but COTDAYUM, the homie fell hard last year.

interesting move for the LAC

considering the rumors swirling after the offs IRT the locker room being a mess

countdown to a fight in practice...

Posted by Wonderl33t, Tue Jun-16-15 10:21 AM
Barnes and Hawes are depth guys. Lance is a badly needed legit starter and imo playing with Paul will raise his game.

And he can give the Clips the other scoring option they need to succeed down the stretch where they failed this year and in the past.

>Don't love this for Lance or LAC. They need more depth and
>while he might be a good combo with Jamal Crawford off the
>bench, he doesn't seem like a good fit with their starters.

You use the term "starters" quite loosely...Redick and Barnes are bench guys, not starter material. Adding Lance lets the bench be the bench, and not require so much of them to where you don't need a big bench contributor every night to have a chance against top teams.

It's why that team was able to get by without a legit
playmaking point guard

Lance led them in assists, people tend to forget

It's the reason I liked Dallas as a fit. But adding Lance to an offense that will run through CP3 first and Blake second makes him a questionable fit IMO. I mean, it's basically the same situation as Charlotte except CP3 and Blake are better than Kemba and Big Al.

Before the C's got Isaiah Thomas, I thought Lance would be a decent fit alongside Marcus Smart although their lack of perimeter shooting would have been a problem.

Saying "Oh he's a starter and Barnes and Hawes were depth" ignores that a) the Clippers need depth and b) style of play and where Lance fits in it.

I like Lance but he's not a guy you can just plug into any team. I just don't see the Clippers being the right fit. He works in the second unit alongside Jamal Crawford but I don't think the plan is to relegate him to 7th man. Hopefully he proves me wrong since he's fun to watch when he's on; I just have a bad feeling about the fit in LAC.
2456702, I wish him the best. this is an opportunity for agenda alignment.
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Jun-16-15 10:24 AM
and reading above, I would have even taken Lance over Dion, especially pre-LeBron's return.

Cavs needed a "Fuck You" guy then, badly. Dion was not that.
Dion is the kind of asswipe that people who don't know basketball (even at its most rudimentary) draft because they see a few legit basketball moves and get to sicing. He has the attitude, none of the real skills for that.

Kyrie is more of a subtle "Fuck You", which I respect. You keep saying that shit about him, he comes back and hits you with the "Fuck You" (Game 1 of the Finals). That's the guy you want at the top of the order.

But sometimes you just need some dudes who will drop that direct "Fuck You". Lance was that with Team NyQuil. Really wish they could have taken the Heat out one of those years.

Absolute dud in Charlotte. I hated that move. Could have effed it up further; I think Charlotte has talent (in spots) but no vision right now. If I had League Pass, I'd watch them though. Kemba and MKG I want to see do better.

I don't know what happens in LA. Lots of room to fuck it up further. I still think he's more skilled than Austin (who did improve, esp. in the playoffs). Maybe a winning environment, like he had in Quilville, USA will change his outlook. Playing with Chris Paul is gonna be a bonus.

Lance and JR are two completely different players so it's hard to really compare them.

Lance over JR for the Pacers because they needed someone to be the cog of the offense and that's the last thing you'd ever want JR to be.

JR over Lance for the Cavs or Hornets last year since they both needed a guy who can play off ball and hit the 3.

For the Clippers, I'd vote neither. They already have JJ so they don't need JR and I don't see Lance as a fit either. I'd vote Shumpert over both of them for the Clippers.

It seemed like a lock that he could at least waive a towel for a professional team but NOPE, he has fucked that up also. I knew he was kinda shitty but I didn't think he could stake claim to being one of the worst players in the league.

Pacers "fell apart?" Their best player shattered his leg and they were still close to the playoffs last year. They will make it this year. You look at their rotation from the ECF year, almost all those guys are gone or in a diminished role. Hibbert, sorry and traded, West, old and signed elsewhere, George Hill, not doing as much, Lance, on his way out of the league. PG is still doing his thing, and he was the guy you basically said would flame out, then tried to be friends with, then pointed back to your original prediction. People see this. It's all in writing
