Jul 16th 2014

You mean, the hype that he lost but Paul George didn't,
though George is supposed to be the "superstar"

Bwahahahah George is routinely the 4th best player on his
team when they play well and singlehandedly lost that game
the other night

Y'all were hating saying he wasn't going to get 8 before

Lance walk so calm down before your feelings get hurt when lance is playing in milwaukee or some shit next yr
his stock took a hit , that much is not arguable
his destiny is still in his hands this series tho so be BETTER ball out
as far as the amount 8 mil 11 mil whatever
it's going be more than 5 per and a couple mil less than the max
which end within that range he lands is on him

Indiana will likely be bidding against Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, and Philly with Denver, Denver, N'Awlins, New York, and Brooklyn as sign-and-trade options.

Lance can run an offense, and can defend point guards, allows you
to hide tiny point guards on other players

He's got Eric Snow intangibles, but can score.

This is why Born Ready gonna command so much interest

Not a lot of guys with his skillset who DONT hog the ball

I've seen Born Ready not take a shot for a whole half, do nothing
but get in people's faces and crash the glass and pass the ball

Second half I've seen him chuck and be the first option

He actually does a nice job of doing what is needed

Generlally he scores well for Indiana when Nyquil goes Nyquil, which
is every other game

but he falls in love with hearing the ball bounce.

It's just true.

And after he gets paid, who knows where his head will be at. He might think he's a star and has earned the right to dribble all day.

His best bet is staying in Indy.

Nah he does that because they Pacers don't have a point guard,
so Lance is actually the best playmaker, by far. And their "superstar"
falls asleep and barely shows up for 12 minute stretches, which leaves
creating and one-on-one scoring on Lance

Pacers are BLOWN OUT in games 1 and 2 without Lance

Like I said: there are whole halves where Lance just crashes the
glass and throws into the post

You don't pay attention to that because you're mad, just like
everyone else is mad that O_E won this agenda

He's earned the right to grab 7 fucking rebounds a game from the
GUARD position, though

Nobody wanna talk about that

Take that up with Basa. I don't care.

Lance pounds the ball. Kemba pounds the ball.

That's it.

Leave your feelings out of this. Or email Basa.

Henderson's also got a player option after next season so he's not guaranteed to be around anyway. And McDermott is a SF and MAYBE a stretch 4.

They have holes at the 2 and 4. Maybe they draft a SG and look to spend on a defensive minded big to team with Jefferson and Zeller but upgrading at shooting guard is one of their main needs this offseason IMO.

If Indiana wins the title (like Dallas and Chandler did), I might see him making that kind of coin but if they lose, I can't see him making that much. As of now, I think Eric Bledsoe will see a bigger bidding war than Born Ready. I think his attitude will still scare front offices.

But big men who show a flash of being able to walk and chew gum at the same time make an easy ten million per.

Chandler is a CENTER.....dude was pocketing 10 mill just for being 7ft whether or not they won a title.

>As of now, I think Eric
>Bledsoe will see a bigger bidding war than Born Ready. I think
>his attitude will still scare front offices.
Analytics drove down Monta's price but I believe Born Ready gets love from those folks so they might hook him up w/ the Tyreke or Batum money.

>But big men who show a flash of being able to walk and chew

Thus the reason why Chandler's deal was reasonable.....dude actually won DOPY after he signed the contract.

They both have that low b-ball iq and crazy gene (JR is dumber and crazier). So I wouldn't invest heavily in Lance. You promised him "free play" if he's quiet, so he's just on his best behavior right now.

JR sucks because he cares too little

Lance fucks up (way, way way less than JR) because he cares too much

JR will/has never lead anyone in assists, ever. Lance led a #1 seed in
assists and the league in triple doubles

Lance crashes the glass, defends 3 positions, and sacrifices himself
for the team

JR is a terrifically gifted natural scorer and shooter...a better natural
shooter ands scorer than Lance (and most people at his position in
the league). Lance is all hard work, focus and determination.

the Lance and JR comparison

Lance had one of those JR mental breakdowns during a crucial playoff series. It would be foolish to heavily invest in Lance.

Two games after scoring 1 point while the game was on the line.

He absolutely did fall apart in court

1st it was Melo now its Lance

oh, and if he gets 11 million, it'll be on team not really contending for a title. He has severely decreased his value w/his "buffoonery" this postseason and how he sabatoged the 2nd half of the regular season for the Pacers.

I like the fact that Born Ready didn't back down from Bron, and was up for the challenge, etc...

but it's obvious, he's too dumb to figure out a better way to go about it

and the fact that his antics have overshadowed his actual play

which at the end of the day, I wasn't terribly impressed with

he played aight

that is what will stick in IND's mind when they go to negotiations

along with ALL the off the court/locker room issues

and I don't think IND is enamored with him in general

almost to a man, everybody from IND wanted him to stop the BS

in the post Malice NBA, you don't want to be that guy

he's gonna have a target on his back next year

but as someone posted above

NBA franchises usually overpay a guy heading into FA, well, just because they can't help themselves

so I could see him getting $12M per from a desperate team

question is, does Lance want to win, or make $$$

Name a player in NBA history that

a) has been charged with drawing Lebron on both sides
of the floor this consistently

b) could ever really do much better.

There aren't any. Lebron James is the best athlete the
sport has ever seen. There are NO athletes that could
really shut him down.

Artest shut him down a bunch early in his career...but
Artest is his size.

I haven't watched his entire career

but from the IND games that I've seen, I don't recall him using these antics against another opponent

which, IMO, tranlates to Bron being in Born's head, and not the other way around.

He intimidates everyone...and Born Ready is outmatched by 5 inches
and 50 lbs...he has to do something because its an outright unfair
matchup to begin with, and Nyquil won't demand he take Lebron one one
one (Kawhi will, though)

In the current NBA he'll get 4yrs/32million.

But all it takes is one desperate team with too much money and he could end up with tyreke money.

But I don't think he returns to Indy for any amount. He's not the reason they lost to miami. That would be hill and hibbert. But both them dudes are already locked up for good money.

Talked to a guy who covers the league (head writer for a major national pub), he said he thought Stephenson was hemorrhaging money in them 'offs. He said he was playing into every doubt execs had about him.

Whatever, he'll be making plenty of money either way and if the Pacers can save a few bucks it might benefit their team in the long run. They have a lot to address though.

issue. D. Wade is easily one of the most ridiculous with the antics, but he knows how to pick his spots so that it benefits his team.
Lance was too all over the place, so he ended up being a distraction to his own team too.

indy offered a longer deal for around the same per year, but i'm thinking they both probably wanted to go their separate ways after the talks initially broke down.

Lance coulda got this deal from indy if he wanted it. Now i guess he can put up even better numbers and hope to get paid next time.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 0

He put off free agency until after he's a legit star

He goes to a worse team on the way UP, where his numbers
will be better AND he helps the team improve. He'll be 25
in two years and can then demand a HUGE extension

The 5 year deal from Indiana would have locked him up
until 28

he "put off" free agency? what exactly are you applauding here? the length of his deal? if he were an RFA and he signed a deal that allowed him to become a UFA sooner, i would see your argument. as it is, he is just a UFA who AYDMF!'ed his way to losing money, security and the opportunity to play for a competitive team.

from charlotte's perspective, i really like the signing. from lance's? L.

With his brick-brained bullshit, he will probably fuck around and lose more money. By the way are we betting on this multiple all-star claim? Indy wanted to lock him up.

Lance wanted to be free when his star is higher, which
it will be in 2 years.

Lance got what he wanted.

He'll be 25, a much better player, and be a free agent with
the new salary cap. HUGE win.

You can't have 2 guys pounding the ball like that when Big Al needs the rock.

1 guy? Okay.

But 2? Shit might be comical.

There defense is gonna be nice on the wings though. Lance's passing ability might get MKG some good looks moving toward the basket.

I think people just think he's selfish because he's
dark skinned and from Brooklyn.

He's a ball handler-court-visiony 2-guard with scoring
ability. He can also defend point guards that Kemba
can't handle, or wings that the wing can't handle.

He's actually perfect for a score-first PG.

Kemba has bad court vision & loves to dribble the air out of the ball.

It is what it is.

It could work, but they'll both have to change their games up a bit.

And if Lance is guarding the pg that Kemba can't check, who is Kemba guarding? Earl Boykins?

Kemba's not that bad at guarding his position, but I agree bigger guards can give him issues.

stuff

But Lance was great at picking spots and playing off the
ball as well.

Somebody is gonna have to adjust.

I think we both agree Lance is better with the ball in his hands right?

And out of the 2 of them, Lance is more capable of playing multiple styles of basketball. He'll never be a spot up shooter, but if Kemba is handling the ball predominantly, Lance can get in where he fits in. He might not be able to play the way he played last year during his breakout with the Pacers when Kemba is on the floor with him, but he can do other things like moving without the ball or operating from the post. Then, he can be the predominant ball handler when Kemba is off the floor.

You don't grab 7 fucking rebounds a game from the guard
position because you need the ball in your hands.

He's one of the most unselfish, hard working deferential
shooting guards in the league.

He's the absolute PERFECT compliment to a score first

But yeah, defensively on the wings they are strong and Al is a 20-10 lock. The young PF's Zeller and Venleh will have to be ready to produce with McRoberts gone. Interesting team, I don't see the 3 point shooting to make a run though.

They might end up being a grind it out type team.

I think Zeller will be good too. Not sure about Vonleh.

But if you have Kemba, Lance, MKG, & Zeller, you can definitely get out and run.

Should be an interesting team. A nice matchup with the Cavs.

Why Lance Stephenson Left the Pacers
by Jared Wade 1h ago TWEET (19) LIKE (2) 8

Lance Stephenson signed with the Charlotte Bobcats.

You have to think the Pacers saw this coming. After offering Lance Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract, the 23-year-old guard was more than willing to pursue greener pastures. The offer was reasonable but certainly didnt scream true love.

Then, Indiana went on with its other plans. They signed C.J. Miles for a role that was clearly we hope we will bring you off the bench but it wouldnt kill us if you wind up being the starter.

Also came other, smaller moves: signing a floor-spacing big man from Croatia (Damjan Rudez), re-committing to a deep reserve (Lavoy Allen), and taking a flier on an injured kid from Western Michigan (Shayne Whittington).

Together as well as looking at the Pacers payroll the message from Larry Bird to Lance was obvious: our offer is our offer, so take it or leave it.

He left it, preferring to take a shorter deal with a similar per-year salary in Charlotte.

I can only speculate at the reasons, and four stand out.

The first is money, specifically when it comes to looking at career earning potential.

If Lance signed with Indiana, he would be locked up until he was 28 with a guaranteed career earnings of less than $50 by that point (he made next to nothing in his first four years by NBA standards).

By signing a short deal, he will be a free agent at 26 and, in his eyes, perhaps be a max salary candidate who could re-sign with Charlotte for some huge sum, possibly north of $90 million, before the 2017-18 season starts. This presumes a few All-Star appearances and a few years averaging around 20 points, 8 boards and 7 assists per game. To outsiders this may seem possible if lofty, but Lance may feel its closer to his destiny.

And why not? He was the only Pacer last season to not slump or falter down the stretch and he hasnt reached his prime. He May well think hes better than Paul George and he likely does have more raw talent.

Getting back to money, signing his second large deal at 26 would likely mean he could sign a third big deal as a 30- or 31-year-old. Though young, he didnt play in his first two years not to mention his mini-Lebron stretch indestructible body so he may well be a be to get a high paying three-year deal when he is 30.

The second reason Charlotte may have landed Lance is that he felt unwanted in Indiana. For a kid from Brooklyn to want to spend his 20s as a millionaire in Indianapolis while possibly missing All-Star games and sacrificing individual glory for the good of a team, he probably needs to feel like the franchise is committed.

As mentioned, the Pacers offer wasnt insulting, but its main message was fiscal prudence and daring Lance to leave not sending a wave of candy grams and valentines to a prized free agent. Its cool they made a movie trying to convince him to stay but money talks is more than a bad cliche and/or Chris Tucker movie.

Its altogether possible that Lance saw that offer and told Indiana to kick rocks on pure principle.

The third reason: Indianas locker room really does have issues and Lance wanted out unless the money was too good to turn down.

We do know that Lance and Evan Turner got into a bit of a scuffle on the eve of the playoffs and rumors floated around about other, larger personal issues.

And Roy Hibbert all but publicly called Stephenson a selfish dude. Even if nothing else happened, stuff like that might be enough for Lance to eject. I could see myself doing the same. Wait, this 72″ stiff who has been playing like the tallest extra in The Walking Dead for two months a center I outrebound thinks that I, the guy who leads the team in assists and takes way fewer shots than I think I deserve, am selfish? Word? Later.

Throughout the late-second collapse, the players reportedly held a series of problem-diagnosing/discissing meetings that, in different instances, included guys like David West, George Hill, Paul George, Roy Hibbert, and Rasual Butler. Lance wasnt included in these by and large, reportedly. Again, its not hard to see him looking around and becoming sick of being treated like the little brother whose value wasnt respected even while he was outplaying nearly everyone.

The last reason is the simplest: He thinks he can be the clear number-one in Charlotte.

For now, they have Al Jefferson, but Lance could immediately be the ball-dominant wing there, and his game could certainly captivate a fan base in a way that Al Jeffs solid production and steady footwork likely never will.

In Charlotte, he can be the wing star whereas he may realize that that will never happen if he plays next to Paul George.

Naturally, there could be other reasons that Lance bounced. Maybe he was drawn in by the MJ allure or simply wants one of those cool North Carolina license plates.

But we know that the Pacers never made an overwhelming offer and that Lance wasnt in love with Indiana enough to stay.

Now, if Indiana has no way to replace his on-court impact, losing such a talent seems will hurt the Pacers short-term chances significantly.

Sir Lancealot is gone.

At this point it would be nearly impossible to get George, Hibbert & Stephenson on the same page for a full season, and even then a chip isn't guaranteed. Might as well keep it moving.

Since everyone knew Lance was moving on from the Pacers anyway, it doesn't really change people's opinions of their prospects heading into next season.

So the only way this further opens up the East is if you think the Hornets are contenders. Which they aren't. Not this year.

Pacers who many analysts/media talking heads had as the favorites in the east once Lebron took his talents back to Cleveland but there's no way they can be considered the favorites now...unless Evan Turner fills in the void left by Stephenson and Hibbert sees a sports psychologist...

And I don't agree that "everyone knew Lance was leaving." Online articles I was reading thought he and the Pacers would reach abt agreement

Either way, there is no one team that stands out above the rest...not even the Bulls.

I do not think Charlotte, this year, is a ECF contender. They are a contender after two years, maybe one depending on how their young guys do.

Win a playoff series? Sure, depending on a lot of factors, but they have talent. It's feasible. Contend to win the East? No. Not this year.

i mean it will be wide open in terms of irrelevant stuff, but not the conference title.

i dont think the pacers could have afforded to take any significant hit. if they had lost any of their main players (hibbert, west, stephenson, george, et al) for nothing, it didn't look good. well, that just happened.

than when teams started paying attention to him he fell off...barely shot 40% in 2014.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 114

is that he went to one that is still "incomplete"
and other teams (Toronto, Washington, Chicago, etc) added value, others lost some (Miami, Indiana, etc) so that there's no clear favorite.

It seems like a bad bet against whichever team has LeBron but he isn't incapable of taking a L.

Iono I still think a lot depends on young guys stepping forward. Zeller, MKG, Vonleh ... if those guys don't contribute, then I don't think they are scaring anybody with Al Jeff and an above average backcourt alone. I would say they overachieved slightly last year, and they still didn't do that much.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

al jeff is pretty much at his ceiling
alot hinges on how much better kemba/lance/vonleh can get in the short term
if the answer is 10-15% better (ie:kemba avg 20 and 6) then they still ain't making that much noise
they'd basically be the kings if the kings were fortunate enough to play in the east

Kravitz: Larry Bird can't understand why Lance Stephenson bolted
Bob Kravitz, bob.kravitz@indystar.com
10:43 a.m. EDT July 21, 2014

In the end, flashing the choke sign at LeBron James and then blowing in the King's ear wasn't the silliest thing Lance Stephenson ever did.

The most foolish thing Stephenson and his lawyer/agent, Alberto Ebanks, did was turning down the Pacers' five-year, $44 million contract.

Do the math.

If he had stayed, he would have earned a guaranteed $44 million, more than enough money and security to take care of his family, his children and their mothers. That comes out to an average of $8.8 million.

Instead, he overreached and found himself doomed by his own pride, accepting a three-year deal, with a third year being a Charlotte Hornets' team option. It guarantees him only two years and $18 million. If he stays three years, he will make roughly $27 million. If my math is right, that's $9 million a year, just a tad more than the Pacers offered.

So for a couple hundred thousand dollars, a pittance by basketball standards, Stephenson bolted the only home he's ever had in the NBA, a place where he has his biggest supporter in Larry Bird, a place where he is loved by fans despite his occasional forays into goofy behavior.

All for a chance to go to a team that earned the seventh seed in last year's Eastern Conference playoffs.

Stephenson got bad advice from his agent and he took that bad advice.

For Bird, it was the ultimate head-scratcher.

What if, heaven forbid, Stephenson gets injured before he has a chance to re-enter free agency, where he believes he will be in line for a massive, elite payday? Who turns down security unless the cash value is significantly higher elsewhere?

But Stephenson's people wanted more, wanted $12 million to $14 million from the Pacers, according to the team's president. They were looking for a $55 million contract. When the offer came in at $44 million, they scoffed.

It's commonly believed that Stephenson accepted the shorter-term deal because in a few years time, the salary cap will increase quite dramatically, and he will be in line for the monster raise he so desperately believes he deserves.

Except that according to Bird, the Pacers were willing to offer a shorter-term contract that would have given Stephenson the chance to cash in should his game continue to grow the way both he and Bird believe it will. The Pacers were also willing, however grudgingly, to give Stephenson a player option midway through a five-year contract so that he could opt-out and test the market once the cap money increased.

Keep this in mind, too, that after next year, both David West and Roy Hibbert have player options, so if one or either decided to bolt and test the free-agent market, it would have opened up lots of cap money if Stephenson wanted to opt out. And after the third year of a Stephenson deal, the Pacers have just $26 million committed to players, leaving lots of cap space to take care of Stephenson.

At the time, though, the numbers didn't add up for Ebanks and Stephenson.

Truth be told, they still don't.

"I really feel bad about losing him,'' Bird said. "I hope it doesn't interfere with our relationship. But I did what I could possibly do to keep him here. Even if he didn't have any other offers, I was committed to giving him that $44 million because I believe in the kid. If you look at our roster, we have five or six guys in the last year of their deals, plus David (West) and Roy (Hibbert) can opt out, so don't you think I wanted to keep Lance and Paul (George) locked into long-term deals?''

But it came down to this:

Stephenson and his agent believed Sir Lancelot belonged in eight-figure territory, $10 million or more, much more, and the Pacers were right to stand firm. Stephenson is a nice player, but he's not a $10-million-plus player, not yet anyway. If the Pacers had met that price, they would have been left with a thoroughly depleted bench and been forced to deal with the luxury tax.

And in the end, Stephenson didn't get his eight figures.

Not even close.

When Bird met with Stephenson, his family and his agent the first night of free agency, he had a couple of five-year options and was sure one of them was going to be acceptable. But a few days later, Ebanks called back Bird and told him, "I don't think this is going to work. I don't believe you have the money available to re-sign Lance.''

Bird was stunned.

They ultimately went back and forth, contemplated different options, but the money was never right.

Of all the head-scratchers, this is the biggest: Why would Stephenson accept a team option in the third year? A player option would make some sense. If he blew up and became an All-Star, he could opt out and hit the lottery. But a team option gives Michael Jordan and the Hornets all the leverage. If Stephenson develops into a top-tier player, Jordan locks him into the last year of the contract. If he struggles or screws up, the team can just drop him.

Bizarre.

Bird could stomach this if Stephenson had left for much greener pastures, a lot more cash. But the argument can be made that he left for a worse deal.

"It's just disappointing,'' Bird said. "When I'd go to practices, when he was on, he was by far our best player. And he worked. If you work as hard as he does, you're going to get better. I'm going to miss the kid, no question. And he's growing up. That stuff he pulled in the playoffs, that was out of the blue. But I knew how good Lance was and the value he brought to our team.''

In the end, he wasn't worth $10 million or more.

Not to the Pacers, not to anybody, in the end.

and wtf @ them throwing in the fact he has multiple baby moms (ie child support issues)

the 3rd yr being a team option certainly makes it more of a L for lance
but it's still more money per annum with the chance to reup quicker
lance didn't give the pacers a chance to counter so he obs was butt hurt over the initial talks/offer. both deals were Ls given his talent level. under those circumstances he took the best one imo

He gets the same money that Indiana was going to give
him, but less time, so he can cash out sooner.

Meanwhile, the Pacers replaced him with Rodney Stuckey.

That's a battle win.

And the war isn't even a debate at this point.

if he was really getting back on the open market after 2 years, cool. as it is, sounds like indiana might have made the fifth year optional, in which case lance left a lot of money on the table just to get back on the open market one year sooner.

Bird is throwing shade, with undercurrents "we tried to help that idiot." It was smart of Bron to go short term contract, but not Lance...? Cmon.

Parsons and Hayward set the market, I can't blame Lance for expecting more. He cuts the stupid stuff and he will get paid next time.
