76419, Tim Donaghy : Refs Fixed Series In 2002
Posted by daskap, Tue Jun-10-08 04:08 PM
Just broke by NY Daily News and now being reported on WFAN, Donaghy told feds that two company men refs were instructed by Stern to fix a series in 2002. They were told to fix a Game 6 in order to make a Game 7 happen, obviously this is Kings/Lakers. No swipe yet, should be coming soon.

Ex-referee Tim Donaghy blows whistle on NBA dirty secrets

Tim Donaghy, who pleaded guilty to charges of betting on games he officiated, is now airing NBA's dirty laundry.

Ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy told the feds two refs fixed the outcome of one playoff series - and that officials were told not to eject star players from games for fear of hurting ticket sales.

The bombshell allegations are contained in a court document filed Tuesday by Donaghy's lawyer. It describes the “inner workings" of the NBA in which top league executives used referees to manipulate games.

Donaghy, who pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to charges of betting on games he officiated, told FBI agents “league officials would tell referees that they should withhold calling technical fouls on certain star players because doing so hurt ticket sales and television ratings," the document said.

Donaghy claims he was told that two refs who were “company men” acting in the interest of the NBA conspired to extend a playoff series in 2002 to a seventh game.

The referees allegedly ignored flagrant fouls committed by the team that needed to win. They also reportedly called "made-up fouls" against the other team which led to the ejection of two of their players. The team favored by the refs won that night and the next game to win the series.

The document does not name the teams. The Nets were in that playoff series, losing the championship finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Donaghy also claimed a supervising referee told refs that an unidentified NBA executive did not want them to call technical fouls on star players or boot them from the game.

Donaghy told feds the league reprimanded a referee who disobeyed that edict in January 2000 and ejected an unnamed star player from a game in the first quarter.

Lawyer John Lauro filed the four-page letter to Federal Judge Carol Amon because none of the information was included in the government’s letter to the judge seeking leniency for Donaghy when he is sentenced next month.

Lauro has gone to war against Brooklyn federal prosecutors for offering plea deals to Donaghy's betting accomplices that give them less time than the disgraced ref, despite his extensive cooperation.

Donaghy claims referees have accepted autographs, free merchandise and meals from team coaches and managers. He told probers one referee used a team's practice facility to exercise and another played tennis with an NBA coach.

"These activities were against NBA rules, indeed, such inappropriate relationships could influence the outcome of games," Lauro wrote.

Lauro said he withheld the names of the teams, referees and league officials because the feds may still investigate the allegations.

The problem I had with that series was Shaq and Kobe shooting a combined 2 free throws in one of the games. Totally ridiculous. But yeah, people only saw the other side of it.

LOS ANGELES, May 31 (Ticker) -- The irresistible force of Shaquille O'Neal forced a Game 7 in the Western Conference finals.

O'Neal manhandled his way to 41 points and 17 rebounds as the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers staved off elimination with a 106-102 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings host Game 7 on Sunday night with a chance to dethrone the Lakers, who improved to 3-0 in elimination games during their hold on the title. The winner faces the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals beginning Wednesday night.

Hampered by injuries all season, the 7-2, 350-pound O'Neal put the hurt on the Kings. His best game of the 2002 postseason saw him make 14-of-25 shots and 13-of-17 free throws, fouling out Sacramento big men Vlade Divac and Scot Pollard.

"I'm not going to change my game," O'Neal said. "A couple of games I tried to be cute, tried to stay out of foul trouble. I'm just going to play aggressive and (they) call it how they call it. But if they call it like they're supposed to call it, the outcome will be the same like it was tonight. You've got to foul me to stop me, period."

O'Neal scored 12 points in a tense fourth quarter, including a nifty reverse layup with 52 seconds left -- his team's first basket in nearly six minutes -- that gave Los Angeles a 101-98 lead.

"He said, `Come to me,'" Lakers forward Robert Horry said. "He has not said that in a long time."

The Lakers showed their championship mettle, making 14-of-16 foul shots in the final three minutes. They needed just about every one as the Kings continued to provide the toughest test they have faced during their dynasty.

Even with O'Neal's heroics -- and 31 points from Kobe Bryant -- the Lakers still held their breath as a bloodied Mike Bibby launched a potential tying 3-pointer with five seconds left. He missed, and the teams will play the first Game 7 of this year's postseason.

"That happens sometimes. You have to take the good with the bad," said Bibby, who made just 7-of-20 shots. "I hope it's out of me right now. We got one more game to play. It's do or die now."

"Going up to Arco (Arena) and playing Game 7, it's going to be fun," Bryant said. "You know how their fans are. ... It's going to be a huge challenge for us and we're really looking forward to it."

Bryant helped O'Neal by grabbing 11 rebounds and making 11-of-11 free throws, including four in the final 20 seconds that kept the Kings looking for the tying 3-pointer.

The Kings thought the Lakers got some help from the officials as well. Los Angeles made 34-of-40 free throws while Sacramento sank 18-of-25. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers hit 21-of-27 from the line while the Kings made 7-of-9.

"Our big guys get 20 fouls tonight and Shaq gets four? You tell me how the game went," Adelman said. "It's just the way it is. Obviously, they got the game called the way they wanted to get it called."

"It's just the reality of the matter," Webber added. "I've heard from some champions that to get to be a champion; you have to go through this, so I was warned."

A driving layup by Hedo Turkoglu pulled the Kings within 103-102 with 12 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Bryant elbowed Bibby to the nose and pushed him to the floor to receive the pass before being fouled.

Between Bryant's free throws, the Kings called their last timeout to stop the bleeding in Bibby's nose so their best shooter could remain in the game. With gauze stuffed up his nostril, he dribbled upcourt but missed the potential tying shot.

"I told Mike I wouldn't forget my guard was on the floor, bleeding," Webber said. "I will not forget that. I'm not going to play dirty or anything like that. I might take 10 more jump hooks or 10 more jumpers, but that will be in the back of my mind." Webber had 26 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Bibby scored 23 points and Divac added 12 and 12 rebounds for the Kings.

Neither team led by more than seven points and the game was tied, 75-75, entering the fourth quarter. O'Neal had two free throws and a basket, fouling out Pollard in the process. Devean George added a free throw for a five-point lead.

O'Neal had a banker with 6:51 to go, keeping the lead at 88-83, before the Kings came back. Divac returned and converted a three-point play to give Sacramento a 90-89 edge with 4:38 to play.

After a layup by Bibby, Divac fouled out and Horry made two free throws for a 92-92 tie. Two free throws by Bryant gave the Lakers the lead for good at 95-94 with 1:55 left and Rick Fox added two more 18 seconds later.

"I knew before the game I'd be out of it," Divac said. "He (O'Neal) went out (on fouls) up there (in Sacramento). It had to be the same down here."

Fox scored 11 points for LA. Turkoglu had 12 and Peja Stojakovic and Bobby Jackson added 10 each for Sacramento.

76491, it's difficult to accept NBA as "pure" sport because of the agendas
Posted by mr_graff, Tue Jun-10-08 04:35 PM
I would like to hear the pleas copped by Stern & Co. Simply playing the "he's a bitter criminal" card doesn't fly when it's blatant that certain players, teams and coaches get preferential treatment. What's worse is that the beneficiaries change depending on the circumstances (i.e., Lakers get the breaks against San Antonio, but get hosed against the Celtics in game 2, or Shaq bullying his way to multiple titles but being rendered ineffective against the Bulls in '07 despite using the same style).

Tim Donaghy's lawyer said today that the letter the government filed last week outlining his client's cooperation failed to note details of what Donaghy told prosecutors about questionable behavior by other NBA referees.

Attorney John Lauro, seeking to reduce the mandatory sentence Donaghy faces when sentenced on July 14, submitted the new information in a supplemental letter to U.S. District Court Judge Carol Amon.

Lauro's letter provided a list of alleged "improper interactions and relationships" between referees and league players, coaches and officials, though none are identified. He said some NBA referees socialized with, sought autographs from and played tennis with players, coaches and executives, all in violation of league policies.

According to Lauro, Donaghy also told the FBI about colleagues who flaunted another NBA guidelines by wagering in casinos and on other sporting events.

An NBA spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Donaghy offered the information, Lauro said, in a Sept. 6, 2007, meeting with FBI officials in Tampa and in a 2008 report that he did at the government's request.

The letter indicated that Donaghy had heard from another referee that a third official had promised a general manager/friend that his calls would go against the opponents of that GM's team in a 2004 game.

That referee, Donaghy told the FBI, called 25 fouls on that opposing team, "far fewer" than on the GM's club.

According to Lauro, Donaghy also informed investigators that NBA executives advised referees not to call technical fouls on or eject star players, fearing that would damage the league's image.

Donaghy, Lauro added, also pointed out flaws with the NBA's observer system, in which league officials rate a referee's performance anonymously from the stands.

He said officials often knew when they were being observed and by whom, citing one instance when an observer approached the referees before a game and asked them to buy a copy of his new book.

The disgraced referee was fired last year after 13 seasons when he admitted providing inside information to friends who bet on NBA games, including some game that Donaghy worked. He faces up to 25 years in prison on gambling and wire-fraud charges.

Donaghy also suggested NBA executives manipulated games by urging referees to watch certain players more closely, listing an example from the 2005 playoffs.

After complaints about a player from one team's officials, he said, the league instructed the referees to crack down on that player.

Either way -- I hope Stern and the other refs get a proper federal investigation.
76503, It should be interesting to hear what Van Gundy says
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Jun-10-08 05:28 PM
Since his complaint about Yao getting singled out turns out to be true per ESPN.

Jeff Van Gundy ultimately backed off comments that a referee told him that officials had targeted Yao Ming in the Houston Rockets 2005 first-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks. Maybe he was right.

A letter sent to the sentencing court on behalf of convicted former referee Tim Donaghy outlines just such a plan. Donaghy's legal team is trying demonstrate his cooperation with a government investigation before he is sentenced on July 14 on felony charges alleging he took cash payoffs from gamblers and bet on games himself.

In other documents filed with the Brooklyn court, Donaghy's lawyers responded to the NBA's claim that he must pay $1 million in restitution to cover the cost of the league's private investigation.

The letter alleging referees altered games mentions only the year 2005, but the circumstances make it apparent that it is referring to the Rockets-Mavs series.

"Team 3 lost the first two games in the series and Team 3's Owner complained to NBA officials," the letter says. "Team 3's Owner alleged that referees were letting a Team 4 player get away with illegal screens. NBA Executive Y told Referee Supervisor Z that the referees for that game were to enforce the screening rules strictly against that Team 4 player. Referee Supervisor Z informed the referees about his instructions. As an alternate referee for that game, Tim also received these instructions."

Mavs owner Mark Cuban did in fact complain after his team lost the first two games of the series, and Dallas went on to beat Houston in seven games. Van Gundy said that a working referee had told him about the league's plan. Donaghy's letter claims that Supervisor Z contacted the coach. Van Gundy was ultimately fined $100,000.

I love how haters fail to bring up games 2 and 5.

Face it the Lakers were on their way to another sweep and 15-1 playoff run until the questionable reffing in Game 2. Games 2 5 and 6 all had questionable calls. People just look at Game 6 because of 27 free throws but fail to mention the 6-8 intentional fouls by the Kings in the 4th that inflated the number.

I do not know if the series was rigged but it was no where near one sided like so many claim. The Kings still shot 20 more free throws then the Lakers at the end the series.

AND disregard the fact that we won a game 7 on the road to PROVE that we were the defending champs and deserved to move on to the finals?

laker fans remember that series and all the bad calls that went both ways..but we rarely bring it up because we couldn't give a fuck less, we won the series. do you know why most people don't whine that the mavs got robbed in the finals in 2006? because they had a chance to win it all with games 6 and 7 at home. they worked all year for homecourt advantage in the playoffs. but they still ended up losing a must-win game at home. just like the queens.

"laker fans remember that series and all the bad calls that went both ways"

Laker fans. Everyone else saw what happened in game 6 as far more egregious than just your average poorly officiated game. Ralph Nader wasn't asking for an investigation of game 2 or 5.

And to be clear, I was a Warriors fan at the time of the 2002 wcf. Was a pulling for the Kings" Sure. But at that time I was against the Lakers more than I was for the Kings. None of this really matters though. As you said "Laker fans remember" while everyone else saw what went down.

And for the record, The Kings blew game 7. But the fact there was a game 7 is the whole point of this. The allegation was they wanted the series extended. That's exactly what happened. What went down in game 7 is a moot point. Historically who knows how many titles would change hands if the team down 3-2 won game 6. A legitimate league doesn't give "do overs"

They stretch the series way before game 6. Game 2 and 5. People focus on the 27 freethrows in the 4th but leave out that the kings committed 8 intentional fouls in the 4th. Kings benefitted from the refs just as much as the Lakers if not more. Kings had game 7 on their floor and lost.

Answer: The officiating, also the most disturbing subplot of the past four playoffs. If you examine the last four NBA playoff campaigns, during every situation where the league definitively "needed" one of the two teams involved to win -- either to A) change the momentum of a series so it didn't end prematurely, B) keep an attractive, big-market team alive in a series, or C) advance an attractive, big-market team to another round -- the officiating appeared to be slanted towards the team that needed that game. I use the phrase "appeared to be," because reviewing an official's performance is purely subjective. Maybe I'm dead-wrong.

These were just the games that jump out in my mind (again, I could be wrong):

# 1999, Knicks-Pacers, Game 3 ... LJ sinks a game-winning four-pointer (called a continuation foul by referee Jess Kersey even though LJ was fouled a full second before he released the ball).

# 1999, Knicks-Pacers, Game 6 ... Knicks last chance to close out Indy before the series shifts back to Indiana for Game 7 ... they get every call.

# 1999, Spurs-Knicks, Game 3 ... down 2-0, the Knicks get every call in their first home game and win their only game of the series.

# 2000, Knicks-Heat, Game 7 ... Knicks advance to the conference finals ... falling out of bounds, Latrell Sprewell awarded a timeout by referee Bennett Salvatore with 2.1 seconds left even though none of the Knicks called for one ... Sprewell admits after the game that he hadn't called a timeout ... the Miami players chase the referees off the court after the game, yelling that they had been robbed ... after the game, Jamal Mashburn tells reporters, "They had three officials in their pocket" and Tim Hardaway refers to referee Dick Bavetta as "Knick Bavetta."

# 2000, Lakers-Blazers, Game 7 ... LA shoots 21 more free throws and rallies back from a 17-point deficit in the final seven minutes ... Shaq plays an illegal defense down the stretch, undaunted ... Rasheed Wallace absolutely gets manhandled down the stretch, yet doesn't get a single call ... up by four with 25 seconds left, Shaq body-blocks Steve Smith out of bounds and the refs don't make the call (the most egregious non-call in recent memory).

# 2002, Celtics-Nets, Game 4 ... Celts up 2-1 ... the Nets are inexplicably allowed to push and shove Kenny Anderson and Pierce while they dribble the ball ... a number of head-scratchers go against Boston, including three offensive charges down the stretch ... four different "bull-(bleep)" chants during the game.

# 2002, Lakers-Kings, Game 6 ... LA needs a win to stay alive ... from an officiating standpoint, the most one-sided game of the past decade ... at least six dubious calls against the Kings in the fourth quarter alone ... LA averaged 22 free throws a game during the first five games of the series, then attempted 27 freebies in the fourth quarter alone of Game 6 ... rumors that David Stern wanted to pull a Vince McMahon and declare himself "The special guest referee" for this game prove unfounded.

(By the way, I would feel remiss if I didn't share this information: Dick Bavetta was assigned to every one of the above games. That's an absolute fact. You can look it up. Doesn't mean anything ... I just felt the need to pass that along. It sure looks bad, doesn't it? Maybe the league could do a favor for Bavetta and not assign him to Game 3 of the Finals, especially if the Lakers jump to a 2-0 lead over New Jersey. You wouldn't want to rile up those conspiracy theorists or anything. Ummmm ...)

Blazers choked.
76577, I mentioned that 2000 Laker-Blazer game in my post

That game was just as fishy as game #6 of The 2002 WCF. That was the beginning of the end for me with Stern's NBA.

LMAO @ you trying to blame it solely on the ft's in that situation. I very recently rewatched the game, and Portland had some excellent excellent looks that coulda really put us in a hole.
76583, you do realize i don't give a fuck about the lakers, right?

Posted by celery77, Wed Jun-11-08 02:03 PM
and in all seriousness I've been a Stern supporter on these boards for quite some time, but when people start lining it up and you have a potential whistle blower, you gotta wonder...
76587, The NBA has an interesting method of investigating
Posted by OldPro, Wed Jun-11-08 03:04 PM
Bob Delaney said today he was never questioned regarding game 6 of the 2002 WCF. Stern said last night that all of these allegations had been "throughly investigated". I'd love to see a reporter follow up and this and ask Stern what that investigation entailed but you know it won't happen.

How the fuck you gonna say you investigated when the man has never been questioned? Somebody from the outside really needs to step in here.

Spurs = ratings killa
Stern no likey Spurs.
Pop sez f0ck you Sternzy! We winnin!

Seriously though, I sincerely hope these ARE conspiracy theories and Donaghy is a filthy liar but the the truth needs to come out. Stern has always been too ratings/image conscious.

Watching Lakers fans whine and whine and whine

or

Another Boston sports fuck up (if there is evidence that this series can be part of this whole rigging thing).

Best of both worlds...I can't lose! :)
76593, With Boston and LA the only thing they care about is 6 or 7 games
Posted by OldPro, Wed Jun-11-08 03:07 PM
Plus with all the heat on now I doubt you'll see anything really crazy. I'd expect more games with the FTs being within 10-14. If anything they might go out of their way to make sure a game doesn't end up with one team shooting 15-20 more FTs.

you speak the whole truth Man period man. Stern wants this finals to go 6 or 7 games easily but I don't see Kobe and the lakers holding the trophy because of the sentiment that the Lakers are gonna get the calls.

Donaghy needs a reality show like tonight because this shit is only the tip of the iceburg. we can go back to the phantom call against Scottie Pippen in the 94 playoff series with the Bulls and Knicks. i mean shit been fixed for years for many.

76598, Next to Salvatore, Dick Bavetta is the worst goddamn ref in like ever
Posted by Solaam, Wed Jun-11-08 04:21 PM
I've always thought Bavetta was the worst ref in the game (Salvatore is a close second because of his incompetence). The home crowd loves him because he gets so emotionally wrapped up in the games and favors the hometown way too much.

He and others like Crawford love to give exaggerated officiating motions like ferocious hip thrusts for blocking foul calls and long-windup signal calls for offensive fouls.

Too many of these guys love to be part of the production. Bavetta's race with Barkley and man kiss at the end was a travesty. Maybe Stern and league officials are "directly" giving orders but they no which ref to assign a particular game to. The league needs to fire every single ref and start with refs who have sack and will not be influenced by a crowd, superstars and star coaches.

But that will never happen.

76602, Honestly...folks need to look at games 1 and 2
Posted by Warren Coolidges Blak Azz, Thu Jun-12-08 12:34 AM
of that series...

the fact that people are focusing on game 6..... and the fact that ESPN keep showing clips of the Kings committing fouls ...ie the Bibby play which was clearly a fouls on Bibby....just shows that all this is a part of the overall Laker Hate that has infested the minds and souls of people for years...

When you defend a player all up close..inside his space and making contact with him...that's called a foul...a player is allowed space...Bibby didn't give Kobe space.and he got hit in the the mouth..

Period Point Blank..

and please please please let the media and the fans of losing teams continue to trump this up..because all it's doing it smaking the Lakers stronger.... Laker hate is like Horny Goat Weed and Yohimbe.... It makes us ride harder....lol.
76603, You my boy and all but this is a Laker talking point and nothing more
Posted by OldPro, Thu Jun-12-08 10:44 AM
This is not about what Laker or Kings fans think. It goes far beyond that. Objective observers of that series found problems with game 6 not 2 or 5. That fact Phil Jackson cried about the calls in those games only helps the argument the league is sensitive to the needs of flagship franchises.

I was in college gambling on the nba like a muhfucka and shady shit would go down all the time... I wish I had like some detailed records of every game that made me scratch my head back in that era...

ever notice the spread is always so close and sometimes if a team is down like 6 with 10 seconds left they will try to foul and sometimes the refs call it sometimes they dont... who knows how regularly shit was goin down...

76609, Anyone know the name of the ex-ref who confirmed part of this?
Posted by OldPro, Thu Jun-12-08 11:00 AM
ESPN was running a crawl last night that said this ref, while denying a league official every told them to call the came for one team, did say they would come in and plant the seed by telling them to watch certain players.
