i mean who'd think to sample a popular, current indie electronic pop group? so that audacity alone gets points. but his ear for them and the way he looped and chopped them was always great. what was the "untitled" sample stereolab song, anyone know?
58540, I've now had that song on repeat for 3 hours

there's an alternate version of "climax" that samples the Al track near the end of the song. it's basically the same song only there's the Al sample near the end when its fading out, and there's xtra female vocals which sing the line "this is some shit for a giiirrrllll".

first off i recommend reading the welcome 2 detoit liner notes before listening. in it dilla mentions throwing in the vocal sample that youll hear in the first verse ONLY TO GIVE A HINT OF WHAT THE FUCK HE CHOPPED. i swear we would never know the sample otherwise, youll see what i mean when u hear the part he used at around 1:45. what kills me is even tho he jus used that vocal bit as a sample clue, he turned it into some of the most soulful shit ive ever heard on a hip hop beat. im not even gonna lie, last night i shed a tear while listening to the shake it down instrumental and reading the front page of the stones throw site. oh, and the artist????? ya, jus peep. RIP to one of the great producers of music in our lifetime yo. bout to get back to work on my dilla tribute track.

Posted by howisya, Tue Feb-14-06 11:02 AM
we all know dilla was a genius at sampling. but, i've seen dilla credited with all sorts of things in liner notes: drums, guitar, bass, keyboards. could an expert among you tell me:

what instruments does (wow did i just write that? :( ) -- DID he play?

what instrument(s) was he most proficient at?

can someone describe his technique of blending live instrumentation and samples?

Sadly I only have this joint on vinyl...and my sound card is being a bitch right now and not letting me rip any wax to digital...and for some reason I couldn't find a d/l...but at any rate...I found a very effective snippet from the official KC & The Sunshine Band site...

KC & The Sunshine Band - What Makes You Happy (SV's "Hold Tight")
http://www.kcsbonline.com/album/and_more07.ram

The reason I even stumbled upon this track in the first place was I was rocking some jam and I wanted to play the ever classic "Get Lifted" but accidentally cued up the song prior...so I'm listening in my head phones and the guitar kicks in...I was like YO! I was so geeked I just said fuck "get lifted" and played this song instead..lol.

Peace,
Wyze

Some of this shit sounds familiar, but I have no clue. My brain is tired from going through all of these, and trying to figure how Dilla came up with this shit. A few mp3s remain homeless:

- DREAM SUITE

- Tarika Blue - Dreamflower
- Dave Grusin - The Colorado Trail
- LET THE DOLLAR CIRCULATE

Can anyone spare a moment to tell me what songs these samples belong to?

i know y'all don't mean no disrespect and have good intentions, but its the unwritten RULE not to tell where it came from...

let people hear it, enjoy it, wonder about it, but dont give the artist and title away man, thats what destroyed sampling in the first place, the wrong people finding out whats been used...

believe me i love finding out shit, but rip it, post it and let it remain a mystery, even when its obvious, thats just the way its done
58820, wrong... that aint what ruined sampling...
Posted by Walk On, Thu Feb-16-06 08:17 AM
it was lifting 8 bars of James Brown and callin it a beat... or those of the sort... let the man/woman... tell him... it was more of a respect thing... like... damn cats can go up to Jay or whomever like... yea.... i know your samples... hes passed now... so lets just see how nice he was...

Posted by presto, Tue Feb-21-06 05:54 AM
i do think 3 feet high and rising and it takes a nation of millions did a little more than that...

but that aint the point anyways...

the point is, we can all enjoy his genius by listening to the tracks he used, without giving artists or titles away...

thats just the way it should be done...for multiple reasons...

remember premo's interlude about break record cats? same applies to this

it even got my mother to dance to some jdilla.

especial thanks for the marvin gaye, the janet beat, beat 30(inspiring!), advent of panurge, morning order, indiana, scrabble, swahililand, hey pocky, and all the other gems all throughout.

i have no new joints to put up but will try to put people on in the future.

i remember puttin on dat sh*t by tribe and dilla on the radio and people was feelin it. i remember my friend put on f the police another time. climax and i don't know, the light, played a major part of my life. theres so many joints i didn't even know was produced by dilla yet i been rockin to em like nobody's bidness for a minute.

thank you dilllllaaaaa, God Bless you, your fam and music!

Posted by lightworks, Sun Feb-19-06 02:02 AM
"when i die"?

(according to someone's sig)

if this is the case, given that i've read remarks that people could feel dilla knew he was going to pass soon when they heard this song, then that is amazing.

so is "when i die" the song that is sampled?
58848, that's the name of the song n/m

58850, Actually
Posted by LadyDontTekNo, Sun Feb-19-06 02:46 PM
Dilla sampled Motherlode - When I Die for the very last track on Donuts which is called Donuts (intro), track 31. Last Donut of the Night is track 30.

The strings on "Last Donut of the night" is a track by The Moments.

What would really be amazing is if anyone who has the samples to every song Dilla used on Donuts put them all together in the Donuts order and rar'd it up and put it out for us. I think it'd also make it a lot easier for us to analyze what he used and to uncover any more underlying messages.
58854, RE: this post is fantastic
Posted by wave, Sun Feb-19-06 09:08 AM
And while I'm on a request role, as far as Donut samples, I'd like Last Donut Of The Night and Bye in particular.

And as for non sample related, I'd like a good quality version of that Purple remix and instrumentals of Untitled, Once Upon A Time, Climax, and Phat Kat's Microphone Master.

Also, I have this blend of O.C.'s Born To Live over a Dilla beat only I don't know what it is and I've instantly fallen in love with it. Please identify it.

Bonjour y'all from eerie Paris, first post on this board, and already a lot of thoughts to pass on...Thanks to all of you for the best Dilla tribute imaginable (picked up my copy of Donuts couple of days ago, been on my turntable ever since...), his music was universal, I'm here to assess that...

Seems i've gone through the whole thread without finding a DL for this tune, so here it is :

Eddie Kendricks - my people...hold on

http://tinyurl.com/mx3wv

...on Donuts' "People " obviously.

BTW, got a hold of some tracks still uploaded but, like many other, i'd love it if someone were kind enough to zip/rar the whole lot into a bundle i could download...and share furthermore, that goes without saying ('m espcially hooked on the rene costy - scrabble /fuck the police sample, France represents...;-)

thanks to you all, peace, Antoine
