"Poll question: Adrien Broner v. Jessie Vargas (Showtime)"
Thu Apr-19-18 06:00 PM by Vex_id

This is a fun ass triple-header. Gervonta Davis and Charlo opening up this card (both ascendant fighters on the rise and both always fun to watch).

Main event features Broner & Vargas which should be full of fireworks. A must-win for Broner who has dropped too many important fights as of late - and a chance for Vargas to further elevate himself within the top tier of the division.

Regardless of what you think about Broner - he's always entertaining lol:

I hope Vargas fucks him up. He claims he's changed every fucking fight but nah he still acts like an ass. You're about to have a fight where if you lose you might be on some Thursday nights on ESPN shit but you're getting into it with some lil ass rap muphuckas. Then you throw a crazy bitch fest on Leonard Ellerbe. He better hope he wins this fight.

lol Broner's a wild character. All that being said, he's still dangerous. Remember, Porter was outpointing him demonstratively when AB threw a monstrous counter late and almost stopped him abruptly. But the Garcia loss was a bad look. This is a must-win for Broner, for sure.

>69 in the same weekend lol.

LOL. He's expending way too much nervous energy. Super emotional. Not good when he's fighting a guy like Vargas who is calm and only focused on one thing: boxing.

I think Vargas will have more in the late stages of the fight and will be more active. Broner can go through long periods of low punch output - and that simply won't work against a guy like Vargas.

That said - I've always respect Broner's craft. When I used to cover fights on press row I was able to witness Broner at his absolute peak (v. Demarco). He was an unbelievable fighter when he was focused - the game always came so easy to him that I don't think he ever really developed upon his considerable natural gifts. A guy with his pedigree can beat anyone - but he has always gone into big fights with mad distractions swirling.

I'm very interested to see what the Kevin Cunningham camp has done for both Davis and Broner, but especially Broner. If he finally does return to form, it could be a long night for Vargas. If not, well this could be the end of Broner being a draw.
One awesome thing about Broner tho, he's never afraid to take on big competition even with 3 losses. As Troy King put it, Broner's "not a fighter from this era." He'll get beat and still want that work.
As for his antics, part of me thinks it's "put on" for the attention that controversy brings, and part of me thinks he just can't control himself. It's probably a bit of both... likely acts out and then retroactively says it's just about business like he did in interviews after the presser. Who knows.
Centeno is a decent enough boxer, but Jermall Charlo should run through him fairly easily. Centeno seems like a really nice guy, but the Lion must be fed.
Davis looked really focused at the press conference and the weigh in even in the behind-the-scenes interviews. Davis is hell for anyone at 130, and I just don't think Cuellar has what it takes to fool with him.

This is my favorite boxing card of the year so far.

He found out quick Davis ain't no joke.

Then Tank drops dude with a leap-in straight left to the liver.

Refusing to throw punches even when the shots were there for the taking. It's like he's truly afraid of the power of counters at these higher weights. That's understandable, but he's gotta find a better way to make things happen that exploding out of his guard to find shots. Throwing one punch at a time when your opponent doesn't respect your power is not cutting it fam. His counters were decent here and there, but most of the time it's like Vargas came right back like "SHUT THAT SOFT ASS SHIT UP." I had Vargas outboxing Broner most of the fight. Broner is just frustrating to me with this timid bullshit.

He's the goods. Ridiculous reflexes - blazing hand speed - heavy, thudding power in both hands - and a supreme counter puncher. Such a gifted fighter. Clinical finishing touches tonight.

Charlo used to be a guy who was thought to be more craft than power - but as of late an angry streak has turned him into a big-puncher looking to end fights early and often. Would love to see a Charlo-Hurd fight.

Broner-Vargas was fascinating. I did not expect Broner to come on so strong late. He was in great condition for this fight and I do think the fresh coach/voice in his corner paid dividends. I also did not expect Vargas to fade like he did - but he was expending inordinate energy early by moving around so much -- had a lot of nervous energy in the first half of the fight which scored well w/ flurrying activity - but drained him late. Broner impressed the hell out of me the second half of the fight. But he's been getting off to such slow starts that he digs himself in a huge hole. Ever since Maidana he's just been inexplicably giving away the early rounds in an extended 'feel out' stage.

30. "Showtime"
In response to Reply # 0

I don't feel like they have rivals anymore. It's Showtime and everybody else. They have been putting on excellent cards. DVR full of fights and 80% of them are Showtime cards.

Tank has always had thudding power and exceptional reflexes. We have seen him look spectacular in the past. He did appear to be calmer and more focused. Now, that was Cuellar's first fight at 130 after a long layoff. I still don't think he is ready for Lomancenko. Not sure what's going on between him and Floyd. I just know he had an opportunity to make a statement on the biggest stage possible (Mayweather and McGregor) and lost his title on the scale and put on an uninspired performance. He has nobody but himself to blame if he feels like he is not being promoted properly after that.

These TX jokers must be eating gun powder during training. They are not there to play tag. I couldn't tell if Centeno was there to sing the national anthem or fight. Talking about Charlo is overlooking him. He should have looked for that left hook. Charlo has always been a problem. Just waiting to see who will give him the opportunity. Does it make sense for him and Jacobs to fight before they both get title shots. Demetrius Andrade???

Is Broner imitating Floyd when he chose to play the role of the villain. Does he realize Mayweather never lost during that time? Or is he like school on Christmas. No Class!!! He lost the fight because he allowed himself to be outworked. He didn't start fighting until the 7th round. It was apparent that he was effective when he let his hands go but he spent most of his time playing catch. I thought Vargas won the fight. I had it even going into the 12th and gave the last round to Vargas. But all that ish after the fight. This guy needs a hug or something.
