the young man ran a very similar offense in high school and he's a real quick decision maker..

I honestly think he's gonna really utilize our weapons really well..

UCLA has the chance to have a very explosive offense..

our skill position guys stand up against any group in the pac 12 and the country really in terms of depth..

Payton...Massington....Mossi Johnson...devin Fuller...Thomas Duarte...Chris Clark...Nate Ise....

Pac 12 rusher Paul Perkins..... Nate Starts....Soso...Bolu..

man.....

I'm ready for a big season....

StarKs hasn't really proven anything yet. Johnson too. Soso is a true frosh, as is Clark. Ise is an FB that had 70 yards receiving.

There's plenty of potential, but... maybe pump the breaks a bit.

but the big thing for us is the fact that guys like Starks, Ise, Mossi, Lasley...got run as young guys...when they step in as contributors..they've already gotten their feet wet...

Starks averged 4.5 ypc last season...now that James is gone..he's the primary change of pace guy behind Perkins....Now Soso and Bolu will get reps as true Freshman and when Perkins leaves, they'll be a triple threat with Starks and will have already gotten experience...

Based on schedule or Rosen?
I mean they could lose 5 in a row but theyre ranked above every single one of those teams you have them losing to in that stretch. I dont think he goes 7-0 but 2-5 after that stretch?

you see that road schedule? brutal...and a true freshman qb? good luck. .its possible he could get better towards the middle/end.

good thing the o-line is experienced...mora has recruited well though, and there's always an upset or two but isa's prediction is an optimistic outlook, imo.

they should be even better this year.

the defense was trash but if its going to be a shootout, gimme Cal all day.

Even as good as ucla was last season and as bad as Cal was on defense last season, Cal still only lost by 2 points (36-34) and Cal was driving for a potential game winning field before Goff throw an interception that was up held even though it appeared the ucla defender bobbled the ball before going out of bonds.

it...

UCLA is gonna lose 1 maybe 2 games this year..

and SC for sure don't want it... we've whupped up on them the last few seasons because of the huge talent level advantage we've had on SC and it's arguably even bigger now...

the last few seasons have no bearing on this season, and also im not seeing this huge talent gap that you're speaking about. its pretty even, and this year, the scale tips towards SC

over the last few years that got their recruiting class ranked high... seen them cats play in person multiple times.... Iman Marshall....Adoree Jackson...Darius Rogers.... I got WRs who were 10th graders last year who torched Marshall on a few plays.... seen guys touch up Adoree pretty solid too..

it's interesting how if a guy is on USC's radar...all of the sudden they a 5 star recruit....

Max Browne was the top QB coming out his year...and again was the reason SC had a top recruiting class... has Max even seen the field in a real game yet?

all those young defensive guys who were under Kiffin over there..some who came out early...highly touted...cats didn't even get drafted some of em.....

meanwhile the Bruins pick up guys that come in and actually ball when given the opportunity.... Barr??? Kendricks??? Now Myles Jack???

come on man...

there's a talent disparity right now and that's why UCLA smacks SC in the mouth when they play them...

but they have a solid, seasoned veteran team. at this point that gives them the edge over a young albeit talented UCLA squad.

my point is that SC gets rated at the top of the recruiting classes because Max was the #1 guy coming out..yet he can't get on the field.... so what does that #1 recruiting class really mean?? nothing.

Cal will beat UCLA this season. I see UCLA struggling on offense, not living up to the preseason hype, and only winning 7 games this season.

Our OC, for whatever faults he has, breaks in new QBs really quickly, but the Pac-12 schedule is always tough. Read option honestly wasn't a huge part of our run game, as much as Hundley bailed us out with his wheels, at least half those plays came off package plays where we had 5 blocking 4 or designed QB runs, and then the rest off regular ol scrambles and read option. If Rosen is quick enough to get 4 or 5 yards to keep the chains moving he should be alright (think more Brock Osweiler under Mazzone). And Hundley killed us some times by holding the ball FOREVER.

I think whether we live up to expectations or not comes up more to our defense really. We have a bunch of NFL picks on that side of the ball but since Mora has been here we've topped out as above average and not legitimately good, and last year we were average at best. If they get to good or great they can live up to expectations since obviously a freshman QB will take some lumps regardless.

not sure how much of dude you've seen...but to me one of his best attributes is his movement and footwork in the pocket, and outside the pocket...

He's pretty regularly making plays outside the pocket
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPV3CBephX4

the kids is a really solid athlete...his not that tall giraffe style QB that has a big arm but seems pretty imbedded in the pocket and can't move..in fact the opposite..he's got solid footwork for a tall guy and can move..

and to me one of the main things that will be an improvement over Hundley I believe is that Rosen's play-fake ability really sells the run....Hundley's play fake was always real nonchalant because he was often looking to take off... Rosen really sells the run and then can get rid of the ball quickly down the field ..he's a much quicker decision maker.

It appears that true freshman Jake Browning has won the starting QB spot at UW.

Unlike Rosen, Browning steps into a complete rebuding job at UW this season. UW is breaking in a lot of new starters at OL, DL, WR, and to a lesser extent LB.

he fits the profile for what Peterson wants in a starting QB more than my guy Troy Williams did...

Troy will likely get his chance for revenge though because Utah is really hot after him right now...so after he plays this year at Santa Monica JC...he would have 2 years left of eligibility and Utah is going to need a starter after this season..

year into the playoffs... He had more weapons as a Junior than he had as a Senior.... and he kept it going... That was the main thing I needed to see..that he just wasn't a guy who was throwing to wide open receivers that were much better than the guys trying to guard him....

then really...the thing I noticed about him...particularly comparing him to Hundley..was how he sold the play action or hand offs... he really made an effort in that regard..which was always something I didn't like about Hundley in our offense was that he was a little nonchalant with that...

there was more competition at QB when Rosen committed than there ended up being...Asaanti Woulard didn't step up and ended up transferring.... Aaron Sharpe moved to WR.... it came down to just Rosen and Neu really...and Rosen has proved he's got the goods...

it's gonna be a fun season...

I haven't been this interested in a UCLA player's success in a long time if ever. I did fuck with MJD pretty hard.

No shots fired-o

Things have changed a bit in recent years since we started recruiting more athletes, but in my time it was very much a working class parochial school that cost somewhere between 4-8k a year. Wasnt a 25-30k a year elite private school like you have here on the east coast or even like Mater Dei is/was

was how solid the defense looked. Even though they were on the field for long stretches of time, they were able to overcome those turnovers and hold on for the win. This is after Vanderdoes is gone for the season too.

I actually thought that was going to do us in.... w/o Walker adding to Vanderdoss and Ish Adams..... that's a lot of really good defensive players to be without playing a ranked team....

Hollins really stepped up and Goforth had a great game..

Those three picks he threw in the 1st half were absolute high school level mistakes.

He calmed down after halftime though and didn't lose the game for us and the TD pass showed composure.

I'm actually sorta glad he had this type of game at this point of the season to slow the hype train down and teach him a learning lesson. Rather have that against a BYU team that they could survive those mistakes against than against Stanford or something.

I don't care what nobody says...

the fact that we have lost by injury so many good players...plus had 2 of the better recruits in the country leave the football program as freshman...

and the fact that Mora has been steadily kicking ass on the recruiting trail since he got to UCLA leaves us with such solid depth...that we are still rollin...

our defense is going to have to answer the bell now with out 4 of our best players.....but we now have a D-Coordinator that has experience..and we have enough talent to make it work..

Looks like they have depth and a solid system but in the meaty parts of the schedule you need impact guys. Losing Myles in particular is a big blow.

The offense I think is going to keep getting better, developing depth and chemistry alike. I don't think they will have any trouble putting up points against even the better teams like Stanford.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Kenny Clark moves to the middle..he was the next in line for our elite LBs anyway..now he gets a bit of a head start..

Kenny Clark is an NFL DT...one of the best DTs in the country..

Deon Hollins has stepped up in a major way...

Ishmael Adams came right in and didn't miss a beat...

Jaleel Wadood and Marcos Rios are real solid in the secondary...

and the youngsters we have fillin in on the D-line are solid too..

we've lost 3 of our best players on defense for the season...we can't afford anymore major injuries on Defense..

but right today...we are still solid on that side of the ball

Even without losing all the guys on defense I expected to drop at least a game or two having a freshman QB... we managed to survive that against BYU but it's hard to ask him to fully carry the team back on a day the defense struggles like Saturday. I mean he almost did it... that's the most encouraging to me but we'll have to play pretty perfect in all phases of the game to stay in contention to help Rosen out too.

and should be for a few years to come. As I said..talent level. I don't care how many stars your recruiting class gets, if the guys aren't living up to that on the field, then it means nothing. Jim Mora's 3-star guys have been killing it for UCLA.

I'm worried about Sark really. I'm a UCLA guy but I've gotten to know Coach Sark over the years during recruiting and I like the guy. I was at USC on Tuesday for a workshop and took a tour of the facilities. Amazing by the way. But I ran into Sark and hollered at him for a minute...he's lost weight...looks stressed.

I'm hearing there is some discord on the team...between the older guys, and the younger guys.

not sure Sark will be back next season.

Our second string DL which is basically what we have right now is getting pushed around in a really bad way. And they're starting to reach in the depth chart at DB and LB too.

Running game is still moving the ball but isn't the kind like Stanford that'll just punish you all game, they need some run pass balance and Rosen has had some freshman moments. He's had some freshman mistakes the last two weeks but if the D was at full strength you'd hope that'd make up for that but the D is not there. They moved the ball just fine against Stanford but kept making dumb mistakes toward the end of drives which unfortunately seems to be a stamp of the Mora era.

In response to Reply # 96

I wasn't quite as high going into the season as Coolidge going into the season but my optimistic view was that we would have 2 losses, win the Pac-12 South, and have a chance to win the Pac-12 championship game and a chance to sneak into the playoffs. But that depended on a strong defense able to grind out a few 17-10 wins when the freshman QB struggles.

I mean it still could happen but we need some help now. Losing Vanderdoes for the year probably hurt just as much as Jack cause it used to be we had two stout run stuffers but now we're down just to Clark it's easy to just run away from him while the other DL are getting crushed.

Still like Rosen a lot, dude makes some unbelievable throws, but yeah keep me penciled in at 9-3 or 8-4.

Rios and Adams are highlight play kinda guys, but they get beat way too often. Goforth isn't a corner either, and the big injuries at every line of defense is compounding our weakening depth.

Led the nation in turnovers thus far...had our chances tonight (Rosen threw 3 balls that bounced off our secondaries hands) but didn't take them.

Was terrible tonight. Dykes isn't the answe and Goff should return for his senior season but I'm really starting to question whether Dykee is the answer. Mora is Tedford 2.0 and Dykes is Tedford 4.0.

Fuck!!!! I hate being a Cal and a Bear fan most times.

glad to see he was on the bike afterwards, hope it's nothing worse than a sprain.

But yeah there's some sort of hex on the players... can we get out of a single game without an injury? Holy shit...

I actually think UCLA made life much harder for themselves by not going all in on the run game. a few of those red zone drives that ended in 3 would've been TD's if they had just given the ball to perkins or soso.

WR's made a lot of nice grabs last night but the only player from UCLA who consistently impresses me is Perkins. I like him better than Booker.

Cal's defense still stinks.

I have a feeling that that's the last we'll see of Paul Perkins in a UCLA uniform because that knee injury did not look good. And any back that has a chance to play in the NFL (which I think he does even if he's not huge and runs like a 4.6) would be a damn fool to stay in college longer than they had to.

I love Rosen but dude trusts his receivers almost to a fault lol. There were a few almost picks and there's been a few throws his receiver could have been killed. I have a feeling that even if everything goes perfect and he's the #1 pick and a star NFL QB, he's gonna still Favre it up on occasion cause he knows he can squeeze it in there.
