"Poll question: So, is Alex Smith still considered to be an NFL QB bust?"
Mon Sep-30-13 10:02 AM by MainSource

Seeing how a lot of people call Alex Smith a draft bust in comparison to Aaron Rodgers and how people were happy to see Colin Kaepernick take over the 49er reins, I just wonder if Alex is proving himself to be a good QB after all.

It looks like old Alex Smith will have the last laugh come playoff time.

Poll result (20 votes)
Nope - He's proving skeptics wrong (14 votes)Vote
Yup - He's gonna eventually choke (6 votes)Vote

It's that simple

Bust I guess determines the definition you want to put on it. He busted as the 49ers #1 pick because he never led them anywhere.

He is not Jamarcus Russel or Tim Couch obviously, but it's hard to say he played at the level of value the 49ers wanted when taking him #1 pick overall.

But the 49ers had something like 4 offensive coordinators in his first 5 years - I think. How was he suppose to develop.

Like I said, he is not on the level of all time busts, not even close to it, but a #1 pick who had very few good times with the team that picked him has to be considered a bust of that pick.

Doesn't make his career bad, just not a good use of an overall #1 pick

draft a guy #1 overall to be "pretty good", you draft them to be GREAT.

Vinny Testaverde played 20 years and actually made a couple of Pro Bowls but he's still considered a bust based on where he was drafted and what the expectations were.

Trent Dilfer has a Super Bowl ring but he's still pretty much considered a bust for similar reasons.

He's had enough time to work himself into above average/backup low-level starter status. Dude has damn near a decade worth of starts so he better put up good numbers. QBs don't deserve a decade worth of starts unless they're pro bowlers, in super bowl contention damn near every year, or incredibly marketable.

Put it like this:

Give VY, Mark Sanchez, Jason Campbell, or Josh Freeman seven years of starts to fucking suck. LET THEM PLAY (c) Skip Baseless. Hire a coach "that finally believes in them" ala Alex Smith and watch them blossom into above average game managers. Fans of these teams (no shots at none of y'all by the way) can claim everyone else deserves L just like persecution complex having nonblakk, old ass hoe ass, 9ers fan.

There are so many plea cops for Alex Smith that for some reason aren't universally applied. He's a #1 pick in 2005 that is FINALLY playing decent 7-8 years later

He was given the luxury to become a serviceable QB. He had a lot of bad or below-average years.

prior to this season, alex smith had started 75 games, a little less than 5 seasons worth
sanchez had 62 and campbell had 71

alex smith is still a bust as a #1 pick, but no need to make up stuff about a decade worth of starts

He'll be in a training camp next year either starting or competing for a spot. If we're going by the old rookie wage scale QB metric he's really a bust.

Alex Smith started to perform like an average starter in the NFL in 2011 under Harbaugh. Prior to that he had made 50 starts in the NFL. VY sitting on exactly 50, Sanchez got 62, Campbell got 71, and Freeman got 59. So this idea that any bum QB can be as good as Alex Smith is now if only they got enough starts is laughably ignorant.

15. "Hey another Alex Smith post!"
In response to Reply # 0

OK, well I voted not a bust but I guess it depends on your definition of a bust. He was the number 1 overall pick and a lot of people will say that someone picked that high should either be a HOF level talent or at least a legit franchise player. Alex Smith isn't that so I guess you could call him a bust by that definition.

Smith already has 8 years and 79 starts under his belt and has a winning record including a play-off win on his resume. Given that he's 29, has been relatively health since the severe shoulder injury which wiped out his '08 season, and has performed well the last three seasons, I would expect he'll add on quite bit to those starts and wins.

Smith will never up to his draft position but it's hard for me to call him a bust when I think it's not a stretch to say he'll have a more successful career than like 70%-80% of QB's who enter the NFL.

He is a servicable QB who is currently 4-0. He is doing what is asked of him and that makes him a decent QB.

like a i said in the bradford thread. some dudes on this board love kickin dudes when they down, in awful situations, surrounded by ineptitude and lazy losers.

then, when the player gets in a good spot...silence, hoping people forgot. or they raise the bar..."OH, HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE DOING THAT"

In response to Reply # 38

And Alex Smith along with Aaron Rodgers were easily the two best QB prospects in that draft, they even come from similar regions of the country & kinda look like each other.

I liked Rodgers a bit more because I'd seen him in action more often and against better competition (he scared the hell out of USC at the Coliseum during the peak of their three-straight-BCS-championship-or-title-game/35-game-home-winning-streak era) but Smith was at least a couple inches & had just as much mobility at the time, plus was coming off an undefeated season putting up video-game numbers at Utah.

It was an easy pick to justify either way at the time.

In response to Reply # 0

Since we will apparently be debating this deep into the future:

ALEX - noun

1. a good quarterback who was drafted significantly higher than his talent merits
2. a reliable journeyman who abstains from the big play but minimizes turnovers

"By draft A.J. McCarron at #7, the Vikings look like they may have gotten themselves an Alex."

a DLG QB can be drafted anywhere or a free agent.

An Alex is a guy who is pretty good but will always be viewed as a bust becuase of his draft position.

He's obviously not an NFL bust. That doesn't even need to be debated.

But as far as #1 picks go? Tough call. You could probably count on one hand the number of QBs picked #1 in the last thirty years that are obviously worse than him.

Excepting trade situations, these guys went onto teams that were... y'know, bad. I mean, that pre-Luck Indianapolis team was one of the worst I've ever seen.

But many of them still put up numbers and made their teams better solely by their presence, becoming "face of the franchise" types. That's what you want in a #1 pick.

There's another few that are arguable. like Vinny T and Drew Bledsoe.

That's not a knock on Smith, but Bledsoe is pretty under rated in looking back at his career, if Brady never arose out of nowhere he'd have had plenty of good years left in NE (not Brady level, but good years)

But given their ages and the trajectory of their careers I don't think it's a stretch to think that Smith's career will surpass Palmer's in the next 3-4 years. I could see the argument either way for these two.

Testeverde is kind of an interesting comp in that he was another guy who had a fairly successful career get overlooked because he could never really seem to shake the "Bust" label that got slapped on him early in his career.

I don't make bigoted comments so I assume you're lumping me into the "angry alex smith fans" category.. problem is that makes no sense. Why would I be angry for being right and you being wrong? You may have been able to spin it that way after my first fuck you post but once you locked that Alex thread all bets were off.. I mean there was absolutely no reason whats so ever to lock that thread.. no reason other than you're personal agenda that is. You looked like a fool running behind me editing my comments but even a bigger fool for locking it 8 months after the fact once I called you on it... it was 8 months later man lol

For my first 7 or 8 years on this board I would go to war without the slightest hesitation if I saw some dumb ass shit being spewed.. I've mellowed with age and am now much more reluctant go all in on cats but the shit you pulled crossed a line. I understand being a mod can be thankless job but if what you've shown here is the best you can do then you really should just save everyone the trouble and just step down... but you won't because this is all about you and the board's well being is just your cover.

But since it looks like nobody that runs this place gives a shit you'll just keep on doing what you've been doing these last few years with zero repercussions... other than continuing to look like the clown you are

You all had a valid point which I had missed which is that OE has posted a dumb attack too. He did it in one post (#21), I missed it, and I felt bad about it because contrary to what you think, I actually try to clamp down all personal attacks, not just those from people who like Alex Smith.

Personal attacks are boring and dumb and make these boards worse. Its makes posts go off track, people catch feelings, and it's just a bunch of bullshit.

Yesterday the post got upped and other folks WENT RIGHT BACK to attacking each other.

I keep an eye out for bigoted language, duplicate/repeat posts, and personal attacks.

I'm actually pretty consistent, despite your persecution complex.

If I see it, I do something about it. And occasionally I miss it (I'm human), or I don't see it (I have a life... sometimes).

I was perfectly clear about what was wrong with that post & I left all other Alex Smith posts alone, so just stop dude.

If you want to lodge an actual complaint and you think you have the support to get me to step down, go for it. If a majority of people don't like the job I do, I want to know. It's not like I'm doing this shit for fun.

Otherwise just move on.

The shit you did and the way you did it was bitch made... and I said as much. I have no desire to start building a case against some mod on a message board.. I mean I'm clearly investing time in this but I'm not investing THAT much time and energy into something so unimportant in my life.

Your response above is just more double talk and spin.. You sound like Republicans talking about the shut down. You have talking points and are just repeating them over and over. I could take half the morning going through and picking it apart piece by piece but I have no desire to spend any more time on this. Wouldn't matter in the end any way as you've shown the inability to really self examine yourself and your actions in an honest way. It's pretty clear this mod title holds real meaning to you and you're going to do everything you can to retain it.. so in the end you'll spin this which ever way gives you the cover you need to maintain the superior position. The real world reality is you don't mean shit to me and I don't mean shit to you... but as one man talking to another 'man' you can't always just bullshit your way outta stuff. Message board drama is small potatoes but if you do this shit here I'm sure you've formed the same sort of patterns in real life.

But so the fuck what right?

Carry on

That is the opposite of being "man to man".

It's message board drama and it's the reason this shit only matters so much.

I was the one who noticed that on the re-read, I told OP this. FYI, OE was FAR from the most egregious offender; hell, he wasn't even who I was referring to. Kira ripped off quite a few attacks at josephmurf, and there were others. For you to put this "abusive language" warning out to OP only then let it ride for EVERYONE else reflected that you were using your position as a moderator, to obfuscate the Ls you were catching on multiple fronts. Would have been better to get another mod to make such a warning and continue debating your sorry ass points. Again, this is "virtual" debate, but you can't get in the mud with the rest of us then try to "rise above" it when it suits you. I mean I guess you CAN, and that's the problem.

but there have been sooooooooo many abusive posts that have gone on and on and on, your best bet is to give a reminder of guidelines then take action, as Cyren has done on certain occasions.

i mean you have shitty ass points that have been trashed, but that's just your "posting" attributes, you ain't the first, won't be the last. to use your status when said shitty points are being discussed is SUSPECT.

Asked quite nicely for him to stop actually, and he didn't.

He did it again, so I edited his response and left everything else alone.

Then, 8 months later people start in AGAIN with childish personal attacks yesterday ("retarded and illiterate").

Apparently people are incapable of discussing Alex Smith without posting like children. Seems really random, but the evidence speaks for itself. ("Stop speaking a hoe's tone fuckboy. This is karmacally bad pre-emptive cysage by all of you fucks.")

So I locked it.

I didn't delete it.

I didn't lock other Alex Smith posts.

I locked a post where people wouldn't stop attacking each other.

That is what happened.

There's nothing I can say to convince you this isn't an incredibly poorly executed plan (where I left the locked post for everyone to see) to hide my belief that Alex Smith is not worth the first overall draft pick.

So here we are.

Smutsboy: "chill with stupid name calling or i'll delete your shit real fast"

The problem is becoming clear... what you actually say and what you think you say are two totally different things.

The fact this even became the issue it did is ludicrous.. this is a sports board and a lot of shit gets talked in here. I've had far worse said to me and I'm not up here crying about it. I'm sorry but this is all some real pussy shit

Your spin game is on Fox News levels. You just attempting to shift the focus once again puts your shell game on display for all to see.

This is why I don't respect you.

I've had countless disagreements on this board in my 13 years.. some with cats like AFKAP and Maxxx were epic blood battles. But guess what, we are still cool with each other because we leave it on all the field and are honest about how we play.

You pop off on a topic, get in over your head then sneak around editing comments out of spite. The fact I didn't even see what you were doing to close to a year later shows no action was needed. Had I been in there waging war I'd have been aware of what you were doing... but I just said my piece and moved on. But you couldn't leave it there because you were getting clowned in a factual, not personal manner, and needed a way to let off steam.

That's why you are a bad moderator and a terrible debater.

This is the reality... not the alternate one you clearly live in

Why quote me out of context about not crying over being talked mean to instead of addressing the fact you were obviously threatening in your tone? I think it shows you were upset and acted out of spite but I realize that's just an opinion... your words and how you represented those words later are not. This may seem small but it really isn't in that it shows just how dishonest you are in dealing with us on this board.

You say you are giving your side and I'm not listening but you aren't giving real answers. I'm clearly listening because I'm asking specific questions you won't answer. Just because you throw some text up on the screen doesn't make it an honest discussion.. you're just showing the same arrogance over and over.

I mean I can see why you want to end this.. you're pretty much cornered and want to find any way out.

and as much as Eli was a number 1 pick the Giants moved up to get him so he wasn't neccesarily on a trash franchise. Point being no QB besides the Manning brothers drafte #1 overall in the last decade has led to much in the way of SBs. Alex is doing pretty well comparatively if you look at his peers as #1 overall QBs.

0 pro bowls is a telling stat regardless of anything else

Cam has made the pro bowl, Vick multiple pro bowls. Numerous of the #1 drafted QBs also led a team to the playoffs long before Smith did. There are still telling stats that show he was not worth the #1 pick no matter how he turned out 8 years later.

There is also the option of not using a #1 pick on a QB which stats probably show is not worth it too often anyway. Granted 2005 was an awful first round draft for the most part so there is not a should have drafted guy instead other than Rodgers.

The real point here is Smith has not done as well as other #1 pick QBs over the last decade but has also done better than some other. For what you draft a #1 pick QB for though he did not fulfill the expectations, especially for the team who drafted him. Whatever he does for the Chiefs does not make the 49ers selection of him any better.

We choose Smith, who suffered being on a bad team. Rogers sat for 5 years and then became the starting QB of an NFC championship team. They swap places we are probably having the same conversation regarding Aaron Rogers.

Anyone without a persecution complex calls this a bust. Teams want an Eli Manning or at least a Cam Newton with the number one pick. They don't want a Jason Campbell or Josh Freeman. If we keeping it 100, Alex's success came way past the time most QBs get to prove their worth. He's good now but let's not revise history.

The 49ers organization that made that draft pick was in no position to handle ANY top draft pick. They were not concerned about football and about developing talent or winning. It was all about balancing a check book at that point.

Aaron Rodgers is clearly a more talented QB than Alex Smith. However, for anyone to act like his situation didn't put him in a MUCH MUCH better position to begin his career than Alex is in serious denial.

Alex Smith is like a boat and the 49ers were like the water. When they drafted him, he was floating on cracked earth. Over time, it started raining and he started floating. His last two seasons, it was an ocean and he was moving along nicely. He should not have been drafted number one, no QB should have, but that does not make him a bust.

there are a lot of busts on that list. Despite the lack of success, most of those QB's have put up numbers. You don't pay #1 money for a game manager.

it seemed like you were trying to justify his lackluster numbers because even the other busts have put up decent numbers and shown glimpses of being a #1 pick.

2001 Michael Vick
2002 David Carr
2003 Carson Palmer
2004 Eli Manning
2005 Alex Smith
2007 JaMarcus Russell
2009 Matthew Stafford
2010 Sam Bradford
2011 Cam Newton
2012 Andrew Luck

Out of this list, Alex is better than maybe 3 of these guys. Carr, Russell and Bradford. Dude has had one good season (2011).

It is who would you take over the first 8 years (or how many are available) of their careers based on what they did, and only the few mentioned have done less than Smith over that time.

Let's not overblow what he has done, but we also don't have to understate it.

Again I reiterate, he has been fine.

Many guys on that list have had atleast one better season than Smith has ever had however either with more or just as much team success. Palmer included

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_NFL_Draft

yes, Aaron Rodgers was drafted at the end of the 1st round

but can you come up with another name in the 1st round that wouldn't be considered underperforming selected #1 overall in 05'

?

Ware?

IDK, just looking at that list makes think he's overachieved by even being in the league at all in 13'

Demarcus Ware too. That's about it, in terms of who wouldn't be considered an underachiever at #1.

In response to Reply # 88

Merriman drafted at #1 overall and giving you nothing after his first 3 years, I'm sure would still get spun as a bust

Demarcus Ware and Login Mankins have put in solid pro careers

no problems there, just trying to give some context

ironic that this is still up for debate with the season that Alex Smith is having

his first handful of seasons = bust

but his last few = not a bust

11' = NFC Chip game
12' = best statistical season
13' = here we are

do 3 solid seasons of QB = OLB/OL solid careers?

and this is a better scene for him. unlike Joe Montana leaving the 49ers to going to KC near the end of his career despite a nice run and a good run their, Alex Smith got a chance to Peak and Prime in a real way with KC and he has the right coach and right situation going for him.
