Bust I guess determines the definition you want to put on it. He busted as the 49ers #1 pick because he never led them anywhere.

He is not Jamarcus Russel or Tim Couch obviously, but it's hard to say he played at the level of value the 49ers wanted when taking him #1 pick overall.

Vinny Testaverde played 20 years and actually made a couple of Pro Bowls but he's still considered a bust based on where he was drafted and what the expectations were.

Trent Dilfer has a Super Bowl ring but he's still pretty much considered a bust for similar reasons.

He's had enough time to work himself into above average/backup low-level starter status. Dude has damn near a decade worth of starts so he better put up good numbers. QBs don't deserve a decade worth of starts unless they're pro bowlers, in super bowl contention damn near every year, or incredibly marketable.

There are so many plea cops for Alex Smith that for some reason aren't universally applied. He's a #1 pick in 2005 that is FINALLY playing decent 7-8 years later

He was given the luxury to become a serviceable QB. He had a lot of bad or below-average years.

prior to this season, alex smith had started 75 games, a little less than 5 seasons worth
sanchez had 62 and campbell had 71

alex smith is still a bust as a #1 pick, but no need to make up stuff about a decade worth of starts

He'll be in a training camp next year either starting or competing for a spot. If we're going by the old rookie wage scale QB metric he's really a bust.

Alex Smith started to perform like an average starter in the NFL in 2011 under Harbaugh. Prior to that he had made 50 starts in the NFL. VY sitting on exactly 50, Sanchez got 62, Campbell got 71, and Freeman got 59. So this idea that any bum QB can be as good as Alex Smith is now if only they got enough starts is laughably ignorant.

My point stands: let any QB start games in 7 straight seasons, cop pleas, and bring in the right coach.

OK, well I voted not a bust but I guess it depends on your definition of a bust. He was the number 1 overall pick and a lot of people will say that someone picked that high should either be a HOF level talent or at least a legit franchise player. Alex Smith isn't that so I guess you could call him a bust by that definition.

Smith already has 8 years and 79 starts under his belt and has a winning record including a play-off win on his resume. Given that he's 29, has been relatively health since the severe shoulder injury which wiped out his '08 season, and has performed well the last three seasons, I would expect he'll add on quite bit to those starts and wins.

Smith will never up to his draft position but it's hard for me to call him a bust when I think it's not a stretch to say he'll have a more successful career than like 70%-80% of QB's who enter the NFL.

See this is why I don't fucks around here nearly as much as I used to... shit is just a waste of time. But carry on

And Alex Smith along with Aaron Rodgers were easily the two best QB prospects in that draft, they even come from similar regions of the country & kinda look like each other.

I liked Rodgers a bit more because I'd seen him in action more often and against better competition (he scared the hell out of USC at the Coliseum during the peak of their three-straight-BCS-championship-or-title-game/35-game-home-winning-streak era) but Smith was at least a couple inches & had just as much mobility at the time, plus was coming off an undefeated season putting up video-game numbers at Utah.

It was an easy pick to justify either way at the time.

Excepting trade situations, these guys went onto teams that were... y'know, bad. I mean, that pre-Luck Indianapolis team was one of the worst I've ever seen.

That's not a knock on Smith, but Bledsoe is pretty under rated in looking back at his career, if Brady never arose out of nowhere he'd have had plenty of good years left in NE (not Brady level, but good years)

But given their ages and the trajectory of their careers I don't think it's a stretch to think that Smith's career will surpass Palmer's in the next 3-4 years. I could see the argument either way for these two.

Testeverde is kind of an interesting comp in that he was another guy who had a fairly successful career get overlooked because he could never really seem to shake the "Bust" label that got slapped on him early in his career.

You all had a valid point which I had missed which is that OE has posted a dumb attack too. He did it in one post (#21), I missed it, and I felt bad about it because contrary to what you think, I actually try to clamp down all personal attacks, not just those from people who like Alex Smith.
