The 49ers organization that made that draft pick was in no position to handle ANY top draft pick. They were not concerned about football and about developing talent or winning. It was all about balancing a check book at that point.

Aaron Rodgers is clearly a more talented QB than Alex Smith. However, for anyone to act like his situation didn't put him in a MUCH MUCH better position to begin his career than Alex is in serious denial.

Alex Smith is like a boat and the 49ers were like the water. When they drafted him, he was floating on cracked earth. Over time, it started raining and he started floating. His last two seasons, it was an ocean and he was moving along nicely. He should not have been drafted number one, no QB should have, but that does not make him a bust.
