Nets, Celts work out blockbuster

Kevin Garnett has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, clinching an agreement on a trade that will land Paul Pierce, Garnett and Jason Terry with the Brooklyn Nets, sources close to the process told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Thursday night.

Garnett waiving the no-trade clause was the last step to sealing the deal, sources said.

No trade between the teams can officially be consummated until July 10 -- when a league-wide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted after free agency begins July 1 -- but the teams made fast progress on finalizing the trade parameters.

Brooklyn has agreed to send three first-round picks (2014, '16 and '18) along with Kris Humphries' expiring contract, Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, Reggie Evans and a sign-and-traded Keith Bogans to the Celtics for Pierce, Garnett and Jason Terry. By agreeing to add Terry to the trade, sources said, Brooklyn alleviated some of Boston's concerns about absorbing the remaining three years and $30 million on Wallace's contract.

Because Pierce is making nearly $17 million this season, Brooklyn needs the deal to wait until after the start of free agency and the lifting of the moratorium on July 10, since the $15.3 million team option the Celtics had on their longtime captain is used in the trade.

Yahoo! Sports reported the Nets' pursuit of Garnett and Pierce as a package. The New York Daily News reported earlier this week that the Nets were chasing Garnett. Sources told ESPN.com the Nets hatched the idea of trying to acquire both Boston stalwarts in the same deal because Pierce's inclusion was seen as the surest way to persuade Garnett to waive his no-trade clause.

The addition of Garnett and Pierce to the trio of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez would appear to give the Nets one of the most formidable rosters in the NBA under rookie coach Jason Kidd.

Earlier this offseason, Boston denied the Nets permission to contact then-head coach Doc Rivers, who eventually left to coach the Los Angeles Clippers.

But the Celtics, now that Rivers has departed, are a team in transition that is said to be looking to accelerate the rebuilding process by chasing draft picks and creating cap space.

Information from ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard and ESPNNewYork.com regular contributor Mike Mazzeo was used in this report.

KG gets his 3rd yr guaranteed money and Pierce gets his full 15.

Boston wasn't getting a better deal than the 3 draft picks and they at least get to play on a team that will make the playoffs. But the reason they went there is for the money. Kidd was going to have a tough transition regardless. I seriously doubt he's worried about KG's phony bitch ass.

for Humphries and Wallace. Even with KG and Pierce being older thats an upgrade and relieves pressure on Deron, Brooke and Joe.

a better regular season record than the Knicks. Both will be trash in the postseason though. They'll probably face off in the 4th/5th matchup, with whoever wins getting hyped that they did something special, only to lose in 4 or 5 to Miami.

In response to Reply # 0

Why do you build a team that's going to suck and then trade a 2014 pick? Especially if it's to move up three spots to draft Kelly Olynyk?

The C's roster has only Fab Melo at center and a lot of flotsam at the four. We still have no backup PG. We get to pay Gerald Wallace to be a backup SF, which I'm sure he'll love, especially on a losing team. Rondo's going to have to walk on water to get this team to 30 wins.

Last week, we were looking at DeAndre Jordan, a huge Trade Exception, and what would have turned out to be Isaiah Canaan and Ricky Ledo for Pierce and KG.

Now we have to hope that somehow a team based in Brooklyn and with a crazy billionaire owner won't be able to keep this team afloat and they somehow collapse into the lotto.

This is the perfect cap to the shittiest month in Boston sports history.

This will be a tough team...People talking about age are failing to understand that Pierce and KG will not be playing 40 minutes a game...The one thing they were missing: heart and toughness...This move fills that need...

For about two years...

As a Bulls fan I can admit that this has me shook a little bit...Not much...But enough....Kidd being the coach is the only question mark...

Trading away both Reggie Evans and Kris Humphries means Garrnett is going to have to play major minutes since no one of the Nets roster right now can grab rebounds. Brook Lopez is a horrible rebounder and it going to need help defending the interior.

Nah...rebounding role players grow on trees....They will pick someone up given the number of guys they traded away...

No way will u see Garnett play more than 30 plus minutes...Lopez has become a better rebounder and defensive player and Blanche also improved with his rebounding....

Like I said, role playing bruisers/rebounders grow on trees....And to tell you the truth, defense was the last of the Nets problems....They had issues putting the ball in the basket in big moments and showing offensive toughness when it really counted....

From what I saw last year, both Blatche and Lopez were primarily scorers. Trying to get them to serve as defenders and rebounders could put them into foul trouble, which looks like it could be an issue since the Nets aren't that deep in terms of big men based on the current roster assuming the trade goes through. And based on the trades and money involved, I'm not certain the Nets have the time and money for this big man tree growing process you're referring to.

No one knew D Willz would play like shit the first half...lol

But the more that I think about it, BK may not even be trying to go hard in the regular season like that...They have to monitor KG's and Pierce's minutes...So they pull a San Antonio and rest those two....

than whatever. Another Billy King special where a short term move that won't get the team over the top costs them opportunities and assets down the line.

they trade serviceable players and three first rounders for two guys who are, for all intents and purposes, done. the only value they would have would be as outright additions to a team trying to win a championship immediately, not as swaps to a team that isn't there yet.

billy king should never be employed again. i don't just mean as a GM or by the NBA, i mean doing anything anywhere.

Ainge did what he had to, but you're trying too hard.G-Wallace is more done than KG and PP combined. His contract runs for more years too.

Hump lost his minutes to Blatche and Reggie Evans. Crash is done AND doesn't know it; if he wasn't happy starting and not getting touches in BK, imagine how he'll feel sitting behind Jeff Green? And his contract actually adds money to the Celtics' long term payroll. In order to dump a 3 year, 15 million dollar deal, Ainge took back a 3 year, 30 million dollar deal.

The scary thing about this is that if Billy King was smart, he'd deal Pierce to Dallas or Cleveland, get that trade exception and go after Josh Smith at the 3.

I mean, we could even get Marshon Brooks in the deal?

Hump, Wallace, and Evans? That's terrible.

The three first round picks are nice but next year's will be a late first. We might get some luck in 2016 but the Nets will be a completely different team by 2018. The only guy left on the roster is Deron at that point.

In response to Reply # 37

thought he had two, meaning he could give them whatever this year (couldn't be much worse lol) and then be an asset. three years is a little tough. still not a deal breaker. humphries, evans, you see these guys not playing a role in boston? they dont have much of a frontcourt.

maybe i'll chill a little, but the fact that ainge only had to take back one crappy contract and got three firsts of indeterminate position (no guarantee the nets will be a top team) is still a clear win IMO.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They were fucked cap wise anyway. They got rid of gwallaces awful deal.

They won 49 games last year with deron playin like ass the first half and awful coaching

Oh. And they swept indy in 3 reg season games.

If they keep blatche and avoid major injury second best team in east

Dwill will continue his huge second half being inspired under kidd

They improved without any cap space.

In response to Reply # 39

It's the hate for everything NY, coupled with their miserable franchise...but mostly their Billy King hate (which is understandable)

I see from both sides though
It makes sense to get them because the owner doesn't mind the tax, and they help right away with limited minutes which makes a lot of sense

However I see that it usually doesn't make sense to give up all those picks for aged vets. The kicker with that though is you found a taker for Wallace's contract, while not necessarily an albatross, definitely a downer of a deal

The biggest issue at this point for BK is Jason Kidd. Talent alone should make them a 50 win team, but we've seen star studded rosters fail before. If Kidd can get his coaching chops in early, they might make a run

Fuck BK though (from a Knicks fan)

and we lost to the Knicks in the playoffs, that PP was gone. KG, I didn't expect to leave, but I guess once Doc left he was completely out of fucks to give. I know we're going full-tank this year, but I'm confused as to why Ainge got rid of a pick for next year. The pick we're getting back won't be low enough to get any of the cream in next year's draft. Wallace's contract is an anchor and he's gonna be backing up Green. We'll see how much of a team player he's gonna be with that one. Fab Melo, Hump, Olynyk, Sully, Bass (I'm sure I left someone out)...smh.

looks nice on paper but i get the feeling 3 yrs from now nets fans will be asking themselves wtf was billy king thinking
to all the ppl saying it's a huge deal ...just have 1 question for you
does it make them a serious championship contender this year
yes or no
please circle one
maybe the nets have another move up their sleeve or something. like package kg + somebody to the clippers or lakers some thing
other wise deal is kinda meh to me
on top of that doesn't pierce contract end at the end of the season, imagine he'd bounce back to boston or a real title contender
like i said best option probably is for them to try to package one or both of these guys in other deals
the reaction to this reminds me of the general reaction to the nets moves last yr tho, deja vu lol
all that's missing is cenario declaring himself a nets fan for a week

give them phil jackson, i don't give a shit. this is a middling team that maybe moved up a level. they are a second round exit instead of a first. big deal. hell they SHOULD have beaten that hobbled ass chicago squad this year. luckily they kept their core of heartless, gutless players in tact and added a pair of veterans that they those guys can frustrate.

deron williams is a pretty good point guard masquerading as a franchise guy. joe johnson is in decline. pierce and garnett are a combined 73 years old. lopez has generally failed to distinguish himself among a thin pack of centers that just got fatter last night.

these guys can probably win their division because it has two teams tanking plus the raptors and knicks, two terrible franchises for very different reasons. who cares? winning a lousy division is not what we are talking about here.

All these guys are good to great shooters for their position.

All these guys are good to great passers/ballhandlers for their position.

They got size for days, this is a TALL starting line-up.

No liabilities, you don't have to hide guys on offense or on defense.

You can implement pretty much any system with that kind of versatile personnel.

Coaching? I think Kidd will be fine dealing with offense and motivating guys, Lawrence Frank and KG will handle the defense, like they did on the Celtics.

I think its a great win-now move for the nets. I dont think the players wont listen to or respect jkidd, i just dont think jkidd is a win-now coach.

Any team with pierce and garnet as your 4th and 5th best players is gonna be a problem esp playoff time.

If dwillz can duplicate his 2nd half of last year, nets are the 2nd best team in the east and will give miami a series.

F em tho.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Dude was balling in a perfect role for the Nets given his offensive limitations and was doing so under major spotlights. Now he's going to a team that's probably on tank mode and outside of Rondo, there isn't a consistent offensive player on Boston to help Reggie Evans shine as the garbage man secondary role to fit so well for the Nets. And I'm in not mistaken, he's coming up for a contract soon.

I almost feel sorry for this cat because I doubt he's going to get much shine and attention to get a big contract now.

those offensive rebounds would be voided by awful put back attempts, he'd turn the ball over by going for a rebound instead of letting it go and stepping out of bounds, he was solid but it's time for lopez to man up and rebound... reggie did shit that annoyed teammates by trying to do too much...

with all that being said... resigning Blatche is a MUST if they really wanna compete for a title

but also JJ and PP are so similar it's a total waste. Not saying they are the same level but if you're already paying Joe Johnson that kind of money why are you so thirst for PP? (lol thirst for pp lol)

Getting rid of K Hump, OK. He was inconsistent and ghost at the end of the year. Evans and Crash are big bodies that you can count on for rebounds and aggressive play, I can see how KG can cover those areas.

But he's 37 dog.

The worst part about it is the 3 first round draft picks. But 1 is protected though? I kinda don't get how that works

How are these Doc guys going to react to playing for their peer in Kidd?

This some greedy Russian deep pocket we gotta win now bullshit.

Nets bout to really be some villains.

I can't believe I'm in for season tix to watch players I fucking hate lol (Maybe I can learn to like KG?)

It seems like some cats think the only way to build a great team is to tank and get Lebron

OKC: We got Durant, Westbrook coming back, and some good young pieces
Some cats on OKS: Y'all traded Harden though...Presti dumb, y'all should've tanked for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014

SA: We were this close! Hopefully we can tweak a little bit and make another run
Some cats on OKS: But y'all old and slow...and choked! Pops is dumb. Y'all should've tanked for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014

IND: If we played better in Game 7, we might've had a shot this year
Some cats on OKS: Y'all lost cause y'all stupid. Beating Melo don't count as an accomplishment. Donnie Walsh dumb...y'all should've tanked for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014

Detriot Tigers: I know we got swept in the WS, but we got all our guys coming back motivated
Some cats on OKS: SWEPT! LOL!! Y'all ain't winning ish...triple crown winner is a joke! Cy Young winner is a joke! Leyland stupid...y'all should've tanked for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014

Boston Bruins: I can't believe we let the Stanley Cup slip away like that. We still can make a run at it next year
Some cats on OKS: Y'all ain't going nowhere...window is CLOSED! Y'all stupid...should've tanked for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014

New York Jets: Last year was tough
Some cats on OKS: LOLJETSLOL!!! What a joke of a franchise...no wonder Tannenbaum's gone. If Idzik were smart, he'd tank for Lebron/Wiggins in 2014
Rex Ryan: What the fuck did you THINK we were trying to do?

Seems like that's the ONLY way to build a title team

they moved three firsts, which may very well be mid-round picks, for the one year rental of one guy and the one-to-two-year rental of another guy, with both guys in obvious decline.

they dumped a bad contract but i just dont like moving a bunch of firsts way out for two guys that are definitely not going to win you a chip.

trust me, i have seen billy king do this shit before!

if this fails. Interesting to see what kind of system he develops to share the ball between Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Paul Pierce. Not that I agree or disagree if fingers are pointed at him, but he's a relatively young first time coach for a major market team with heavy contracts.

NY Times beat writer for the Nets that MarShon Brooks is being dealt instead of Reggie Evans. Huge difference since that means Garnett will get some relief in terms of minutes and that frees up both Lopez and Garnett from having to clean up the glass.

It appears Billy King isn't an idiot after all since Evans makes about 2 mil per year for the remainder of his contract if I remember correctly.

Yep....U r correct....

It looks like Brooklyn is sending out Brooks, JauJaun Joseph, Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, Keith Bogans and three first -round picks....

So they lose little rebounding by keeping Evans...CJ stays as well...And they will probably pick up another big body and a perimeter player to back up Johnson and PP to add depth...

now that the dust has settled, i dont think the trade is lopsided because there was no evans and i was mistaken about the length of wallace's deal.

what this boils down to is filler contracts and three firsts for pierce and kg. IMO three firsts is a pretty high price for short term rentals.

The Nets went from a young clusterfuck to an old clusterfuck...

Boston will have 2 out of the 3 pick as lottery picks.

They free up money and Gerald Wallace's fantasy stock should rise, playing with Rondo.

Boston is still Boston and I am surprised Dwight never considered Beantown on his list.

I hate them with a passion but I think are on the right track with rebuilding.

>The Nets went from a young clusterfuck to an old
>clusterfuck...

Nah...They are looking at this as a two year project...Both Pierce and KG have short deals and at least one of them will come off the books, money wise...

>Boston will have 2 out of the 3 pick as lottery picks.

The picks will be minor, though....Brooklyn will be a good team so Boston is looking at low first round draft picks...

>They free up money and Gerald Wallace's fantasy stock should
>rise, playing with Rondo.

Not with Wallace's three year deal...That's a bad contract...And he's a bit broken down and had issues making open shots....Getting rid of his contract was a coup for BK...

>Boston is still Boston and I am surprised Dwight never
>considered Beantown on his list.

They are rebuilding and looking at next season's draft...That's how you judge this team....Can they be bad enough to get a top 3 draft pick? That's the issue....

>I hate them with a passion but I think are on the right track
>with rebuilding.

I hate them too...lol....And this is the right move for Boston...

But don't dismiss Brooklyn....The one thing they were missing is toughness...They get that with KG and Pierce...Again....this is a two year project and that money will come off the books....

We're still over the cap today and, long term, we turned Jason Terry's bad 3 year, 15 million dollar deal into Crash's worse 3 year, 30 million dollar deal.

And I think the last marquee free agent we signed was Dominique WIlkens. NBA players signs to play in Boston.

In response to Reply # 100

is not only are they starting players with great size at each position, but each player is a really good jumpshooter.

On jumpers

Williams .482%efg (169 threes made, 37.8%)
Johnson .495%efg (148 threes made, 37.5%)
Pierce .478%efg (145 threes made, 38.0%)
Garnett .466efg
Lopez .411efg

Oh, and Jason Terry off the bench who made 123 threes last season at 37%.

They might not have great perimeter defense, but the Nets are going to run teams off the court offensively next season.

The combination of him and Jeff Green should be interesting, but with respect to Rondo's game, what they lose in midrange shooting, they gain in athleticism. Rondo will get them open looks and some easy buckets, and Hump will benefit.

They got 3 draft picks out of swapping bad contracts, and if this draft is any indication of how current GM's evaluate talent, late picks are just as good as early ones.

With the Nets, you can only play 5 at a time, so unless Jason Kidd has some sort of clock management/rotation skill I am not aware of, who is going to rebound???

When you have stacked teams, basketball becomes a chess match.
With Hump and Evans you are guaranteed a solid rebounder at the 4 no matter what rotation especially offensive boards. With KG, you will lose that because he doesn't crash the glass, he hangs outside for that midrange shot. Pierce won't bang inside like Wallace and Brook Lopez is not a rebounding force at all. Humphries and Evans free him up to work on his post up game since they do the dirty work. Their perimeter game improved offensively and adding KG does help scoring in the post, but they lost on D. Joe Johnson ain't defending shit, Pierce ain't defending shit, they will have to keep Evans on the floor as much as possible, but then you really end up playing who has the best matchup.

As someone said Hump was basically out of the rotation until the end of the season....Crash was losing minutes as well....

The Nets will be fine on the rebounding side of things...That's not their issue...Their no. 1 issue (as u noted) is whether Kidd will be able to keep down KG's and Pierce's minutes....Kidd is the big question mark being that he's a rookie coach....

As for Boston, by having decent players on the team Ainge may be shooting himself and the Celtics in the foot...He is basically trying to rebuild and tank for next years draft....What good is that when u r too good to collect on those picks?

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

With Rondo getting hurt late in the season, next year is gonna be pure tank mode...gives them a lottery plus the Nets first in what should be a very good draft

the bogans/van horn/mckie guy who is collecting a small check or none at all, already has his career in the books and, then, by some small stroke of luck, he gets to sign a fat ass contract to not play because it convenes for some awkward salary-matching purposes.
