"2013 Slam Dunk Contest has no star power..."

...but might be the best one ever. All of these dudes are great Dunkers, but I don't think Manimal will be that creative. Can't wait to see what Bledsoe has up his sleeve. James White has gotta be the favorite though.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/2013-dunk-contest-field-jeremy-evans-bledsoe-faried-000750405--nba.html

The 2013 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend in Houston will feature two former champions, one of the league's most exciting rookie dunkers, an explosive combo guard starting to earn national attention, a rim-rattling big man and a world-renowned dunker who's already guaranteed a win.
As announced on TNT's pregame show before the Boston Celtics/Los Angeles Lakers game on Thursday night, the six participants in this year's dunk contest are:
• Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans, the 2012 Sprite Slam Dunk champion
• Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe
• Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried
• Indiana Pacers forward/guard Gerald Green
• Toronto Raptors forward/guard Terrence Ross
• New York Knicks forward/guard James White
Both Evans and Green, who won the 2007 contest as a member of the Boston Celtics, will look to become the sixth player in the competition's 27-year history to win multiple dunk contests, joining Michael Jordan (1987, 1988), Dominique Wilkins (1985, 1990), Harold Miner (1993, 1995), Jason Richardson (2002, 2003) and Nate Robinson (2006, 2009, 2010).

Apologies to the MJ/Nique apologists. J was on some next level shit though and my favorite contest dunker ever. Vince was perhaps the last real top level star, but J outshines Vince IMO.

Shout out to Iggy and DeMar for holding down the robbed/underrated squad.

He is absolutely right about JRich.

Vince's contest was a high mark for the contest itself, because he brought back legit star power and pulled out some unique dunks. But a lot of what made that contest great was because of the VC hype, and it was a superstar dunking which had become rare.

Go re-watch those Jordan/Nique contests. They repeat some of the same dunks, many of which are simple by today's standards. Historical sigficance? Sure, they are legends that paved the way.

But ACTUAL dunks? Not even a question JRich was better. Difficulty level, creativity, power...all the things we give credit to Nique, Jordan and Vince, J Rich did better.

J-Rich is prolly top 5 but he ain't the best.

That contest only had 2 dunks that were super dope. Everything else was 'good'. It's just that he did normal dunks off lob bounces that made them creative. The best dunk was the lob bounce between the legs joint. But Nique dunked WAAAAAAAAAY more powerful than J-Rich. Which made his dunks resonate more.

>Vince's contest was a high mark for the contest itself,

No, you better go back and watch Vince's dunks. The hand in the rim? 360 windmill opposite side of the rim off the FIRST dunk, same shit from behind the back board, remixing J-rich's shit by having a team mate (who could fuck up the pass more than just tossing it) and the two hand glide from just inside the FT. That shit SONS j-rich's contest...easy.

>Go re-watch those Jordan/Nique contests. They repeat some of
>the same dunks, many of which are simple by today's standards.

Jordan's dunks were about grace cuz you couldn't appreciate them fully without the slomo. Regardless of Nique's dunks being standard, they were powerful. That made them that much more detrimental. J-Rich just combined a few.

>But ACTUAL dunks? Not even a question JRich was better.
>Difficulty level, creativity, power...all the things we give
>credit to Nique, Jordan and Vince, J Rich did better.

No, no and no. He was more creative than Nique, not more powerful and I'll give him a difficulty level edge but that still doesn't surpass Nique cuz the power discrepancy is so wide. Jordan's dunks are difficult as hell given his movements and they were super creative (outside of the FT thing)...his glides/leaning, motions with the ball in the air...I dare to say no one has dunked Like Mike since. I think J-Rich was prolly a little more entertaining but I'd actually call it a draw personally. And I put money to this: J-Rich would struggle to nail the fist in the rim dunk and the two handed glide that Vince did. Vince actually did J-Rich's best dunk with ease. That's a no contest there.

>That contest only had 2 dunks that were super dope.

Vince had ONE "super dope" dunk and a few cool dunks. J-Rich's 02 performance>>>>>>>Vince's overall. That reverse 180 off the bounce (one handed if I remember correctly) bodies everything Vince did in his contest.

Vince had hype and the return of the contest on his side. J fucking smashed the contest into a whole new era of creativity and reset the bar.

Oh and his through the legs off the glass makes it even worse for Vince. Nothing Vince did is anywhere near that level of creativity, difficulty or athleticism. Oh and his through the legs reverse in 03? It's GOAT.

>Everything else was 'good'. It's just that he did normal

I could care less who was "more powerful". This shit ain't about power, it's about creativity. Unless you're shit is baby soft, how hard you dunk is a VERY minor element. We're not watching to see who rattles the rim harder, we're watching who get's there in the most creative way.

>>Vince's contest was a high mark for the contest itself,

LOL. The three dunks I named fuck Vince up the ass and nuts in his mouth. The Vince contest being a high mark is also a testament to actual stars participating, and the fact that the contest had returned.

>Jordan's dunks were about grace cuz you couldn't appreciate
>them fully without the slomo. Regardless of Nique's dunks
>being standard, they were powerful. That made them that much

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Nique and Mike are pretty boring in comparison. ALL you got about Nique is power and that shit really doesn't matter. That's a poor argument for Nique, because you know good and well he is not fucking with J creatively.

>No, no and no. He was more creative than Nique, not more
>powerful and I'll give him a difficulty level edge but that
>still doesn't surpass Nique cuz the power discrepancy is so
>wide.

This is absurd. The difficulty "edge"? That gap is wide as fuck in J's favor. Creativity? Another massive gap favoring J. Power? Nobody cares about that shit. It's so immaterial it's hysterical.

>Jordan's dunks are difficult as hell given his
>movements and they were super creative (outside of the FT
>thing)...

Super creative? SUPER creative? Nah. The last decade has been super creative, despite some valleys in the midst of those astounding peaks, and Mike nor Nique is fucking with it. At all. It's not even a discussion. It's a nostalgia thing and nothing more. Those two have been lapped in the creative department several times over.

Iggy's behind the backboard jam sons everything either guy ever did. Had someone else pulled that shit out in the Mike/Nique contest? It's a wrap.

>think J-Rich was prolly a little more entertaining but I'd

The fist in the rim is an impressive athletic feat but a visually boring dunk. The two handed glide is in the same category.

Sorry AB, I like you an shit but you're way, way, way off. Your Chi loyalty and nostalgia are impeding your objectivity.

J is in a league by himself with the three dunks I mentioned. You keep finding ways to trivialize them but the arguments are pretty weak for Nique (The fact that you keep bringing up his power in a contest of creativity seems a little desperate) and Mike (he's so graceful! lol).

Vince realistically had one OMG dunk and two others on par (the T Mac and the behind the back board), and J's three sons those.

It's obvious we look for different parameters for judging dunkers.

Creativity is a key factor to me but not the only one. Rise, Power, Hangtime, Style and impact relative to the time are just as important. You are letting your 'modern' mentality overlap objectivity. The reason J-Rich HAD to be creative is because no one could execute MJ/Nique/Dr. J's dunks in a more impressive fashion than they did.

So he has to do a windmill off a lob/bounce and let's not act like J-Rich didn't do a standard windmill (and FOH with either being MORE impressive than a standard Nique windmill).

The two handed windmill off the lob/bounce reverse was cold as hell tho. Then he does a windmill off a lob/bounce then another 360 double clutch off a lob/bounce. So he's done the same dunks just off the bounce. Double clutch reverse off the bounce. Then the finale, which was dope as hell.

But let's stop acting like this:

http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nba_tv/2010/01/05/20100104_dominique_85dunk_contest.nba/index.html

Was the 1950's. 65% of those dunks would son most of the shit these dudes trot out in contest today.

Watch the power in Nique's dunks. Look at both of their hang times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqAP5tmWl7M&feature=player_embedded#!

J-Rich was all vert. Nigga had no distance on his dunks. He had to jump high to execute but MJ and Nique jumped high AND glided while executing. And none of these dudes rock the cradle anymore cuz that shit is HARD to do and land it.

They'd be on their Birdman 20th do-over trying to nail it.

>Vince had ONE "super dope" dunk and a few cool dunks. J-Rich's
>02 performance>>>>>>>Vince's overall. That reverse 180 off the
>bounce (one handed if I remember correctly) bodies everything
>Vince did in his contest.

Smh...I can't even roll with you on this one man. Just put up a poll CT with Vince, Nique, Blake, Kemp, J-Rich videos and see who wins lol.

>Vince had hype and the return of the contest on his side. J
>fucking smashed the contest into a whole new era of creativity
>and reset the bar.

There was hype for reason. He tore that shit down dude.

>Oh and his through the legs off the glass makes it even worse
>for Vince. Nothing Vince did is anywhere near that level of
>creativity, difficulty or athleticism. Oh and his through the
>legs reverse in 03? It's GOAT.

Nah man...that through the legs reverse was nasty I'll give you that but it's JUST vert. Vince showed vert, power, hangtime/glide AND creativity. More complete to me.

>I could care less who was "more powerful". This shit ain't
>about power, it's about creativity. Unless you're shit is baby
>soft, how hard you dunk is a VERY minor element. We're not
>watching to see who rattles the rim harder, we're watching who

See we just dont see it the same way.

>LOL. The three dunks I named fuck Vince up the ass and nuts in
>his mouth. The Vince contest being a high mark is also a
>testament to actual stars participating, and the fact that the

Only if you looking for high jumpers...and you keep overstating that hype shit. Vince delivered BEYOND expectations.

>ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Nique and Mike are pretty boring in
>comparison. ALL you got about Nique is power and that shit
>really doesn't matter. That's a poor argument for Nique,

Not at all. You just biased lol

>This is absurd. The difficulty "edge"? That gap is wide as
>fuck in J's favor. Creativity? Another massive gap favoring J.
>Power? Nobody cares about that shit. It's so immaterial it's
>hysterical.

I whole heartedly disagree. If you jumpstraight up and dunk executing a few moves it's impressive. If you jump 6 feet away, float to the basket executing moves, that's more impressive to me. And the 'type' of movement makes a difference too. A windmill or double clutch is a vertical movement from down to up. Rocking the cradle is a side to side movement and you have to have enough lift to go side to side and pull that shit up at the right time to get it over the rim (and in MJ's case, while gliding).

>Super creative? SUPER creative? Nah. The last decade has been
>super creative, despite some valleys in the midst of those
>astounding peaks, and Mike nor Nique is fucking with it. At
>all. It's not even a discussion. It's a nostalgia thing and

Bias with NO evidence or explanation besides "I like new shit". C'mon CT.

>Iggy's behind the backboard jam sons everything either guy
>ever did. Had someone else pulled that shit out in the
>Mike/Nique contest? It's a wrap.

Bullshit.

>The fist in the rim is an impressive athletic feat but a
>visually boring dunk. The two handed glide is in the same
>category.

That shit was incredible and a powerful visual. "Fuck all your fancy arm movements, I'm gonna stuff my ARM in this bitch to show you it's real." Very creative and didn't require the fluff of a lob/bounce.

>Sorry AB, I like you an shit but you're way, way, way off.
>Your Chi loyalty and nostalgia are impeding your objectivity.

nope, I like more about dunking than just jumping high.

>J is in a league by himself with the three dunks I mentioned.

>J-Rich is prolly top 5 but he ain't the best.

Probably? Cmon, only VC and Nique can even have an argument. Anyone saying Jordan is either a homer or thinks free throw line dunks are the end all. Though his kiss-the-rim is an alltime fav of mine. I agree about the slo-mo thing, but unfortunately that kinda negates him from the top spot imo. If you need technology to appreciate it.

>But Nique dunked WAAAAAAAAAY more powerful than J-Rich. Which made his dunks resonate more.

I'll give you that Nique was the most powerful, and I LOVED watching him dunk, but his dunks are simple by today's standards. He is top 3 for me, but J Rich's best > Nique's best.

>No, you better go back and watch Vince's dunks. The hand in
>the rim? 360 windmill opposite side of the rim off the FIRST
>dunk, same shit from behind the back board, remixing J-rich's
>shit by having a team mate (who could fuck up the pass more
>than just tossing it) and the two hand glide from just inside
>the FT. That shit SONS j-rich's contest...easy.

Disagree. Hand in the rim, cool but massively overrated. That 360 windmill was crazy when he pulled it out, because it was new and effortless. But there are about 20 dudes who could pull that right today just as easily. The behind the backboard one was ELEMENTARY level to these dudes. J-Rich's through the legs reverse was simply better, way more difficult than any of VC's.

>actually did J-Rich's best dunk with ease.

Wut. Link me to this mystery dunk where VC goes through the legs reverse. Never happened. Some fine hyperbole there though, I honestly think you are misremembering VC's contest. The legend is greater than the actual dunks.

Anyway agree to disagree, I just think VC's legend and that contest has gotten out of hand. JRich surpassed him in technical difficulty imo.

Who can throw down the craziest, most insane dunk on a 9-foot hoop?

They post videos of the dunks, America votes to select the Top 5.

Top 5 get flown out to All-Star Weekend to do it as a warm-up to the actual Dunk Contest, winner gets a cash prize.

Unless it attracts enough viewers to the event, in which case, it does.

NBA logos everywhere.

All-Stars on the sideline cheering on the dunks and freaking out when they're great.

Maybe NBA All-Stars as the judges.

most amateur dunk contests are better than the nba's.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

His game has improved a significant amount from last season but his defense isn't where it should be. Plus he is to Vinny what Pau is to D'Antoni. He's not gonna an All Star team playing 20mins a game.

but I like this lineup...three dudes whose careers have been defined by this (Green, J-White, Jeremy Evans), two young super athletic Bammas (Bledsoe, T-Ross), and a taller super athletic, telegenic bamma(Faried). No Brent Barry gimick type dudes, no product placing, marketing department nominated big men (Dwight, Blake).
