7. "Another intensely boring Clint movie with a first draft script." In response to Reply # 0
The structure is nonsensical. The Laura Linney plotline is insulting to Linney. Hanks stands around and look stoic. Yeah, the plane landing sequence isn't uninteresting... but it's two-thirds of the way through the movie, as a 20+ minute flashback while Sully sits in a bar with Michael Rapaport. And we then watch the plane crash again fifteen minutes later when Sully listens to the audio recording from the crash.
I don't know why I see Clint movies anymore, man. The guy who made Unforgiven is loooooong gone.

i know i'm late to an obvious party, but for whatever reason, when I saw that this unnecessary movie was directed by Clint, it really struck me how obsessed he's become (or always been?) with celebrating the heroism of old white men.
i've been trying to pinpoint my distaste for his work and it's the superfluousness of it all. he makes blandly appealing propaganda films for a time only a small subsection of the world feels nostalgia for.
it's actually something that irks me about Spielberg as well.

I love Eckhart, and he's fine in this, but I could probably name 10-15 supporting performances from movies already out more deserving of an Oscar nom than Eckhart.
If this movie gets *any* nominations, I'm going to go into Rage Mode. I know Hanks will probably get one... but still.

At this point...he's basically shaking his fist at technological progress. Someone tell Clint the science is in. Plane simulators work and are extremely effective. Also...saber-metrics in baseball are real and more effective than listening to the 'sound the bat makes' when someone hits the ball. (regarding his baseball movie)
I anticipate an anti-vaccination movie from him next.

who stopped that attack a couple years ago.
Another story about white men who did something awesome and heroic, but it's about a 30 minute story, so expect 3-6 phone calls to their wives who will be in the kitchen holding their babies, or putting groceries away. Two of them will be super supportive, and one will be a nagging bitch until she turns on the news

I try to be hesitant in throwing this out because it can be overly convenient and simplifying....but Clint is basically the embodiment of 'reactionary white male' at this point.

I agree with the general sentiment of the thread. for some reason I caught myself thinking about this event the other day, noticed it was on HBO this morning so I figured what the hell. The crash sequence had me going and the NTSB interrogations were well played - it's a shame hat tone was basically totally made up for the film. You get the feeling this movie badly wants to be The Social Network. Like, this was a way more public situation and everyone knows the NTSB ruled in Sully's favor and it was not a majority of simulations that had him landing at an airport, so why the fuck did they do that here?
the structure is silly too and I'm surprised so many critics were willing to give this movie a pass for those two things. All of the post-flight drama would have had more weight I think if it were just done chronologically. But I just can't get over how they showed the NTSB actively trying to get this dude in trouble; that Eckhart video game line was so shoehorned in, and we spent what a half hour just watching computer simulations of the crash we already watched twice (and then we watch it a third time?!)?
what a laborious piece of 'entertainment'. lucky it got a good cast and got wrapped around a solid set piece.
lastly, back to my fear of planes, I felt a little taken advantage of by the scenes of the plane skipping through the city also. One would've been fine.

I even did a little research and none of this supposed witch-hunt against Sully really happened. Of course they do an investigation. That's protocol. It's not like anyone was 'out to get him'.
