There are scenes of brilliance and scenes of blah. The performances are all on incredibly different pages. It can't decide whether it's broad slapstick or whether it's psychological thriller or whether it's gritty revenge or what. Which is fine, because it's still a rather enjoyable mess... but it's a mess nevertheless. I find Django's story more engaging as a result.

It also feels more deeply steeped in that layer of referential irony he loves. I was surprised to find Django hitting on an emotional level in a way that IB never really achieves for me (and most of his films don't really achieve for me). Django starts to drag when we're in Candyland... but the build until Candyland and the finale are his best work since Kill Bill imo.

Really, I struggle to get through a whole sit of Basterds, because outside of Waltz's scenes and one or two others, I either scratch my head or yawn. It's still worth it due to how much fun Waltz is (and one or two other scenes), but I rarely find myself drawn to the film as a whole.

I might be overrating Django, mostly because I was prepared to wince but instead found it quite enjoyable, but that's why IB is where it is on my rankings. (There is, it should be noted, a large divide between IB and Dogs/DP, imo.)

I guess I'm rating it hire purely off of how specific scenes were shot and the acting in those scenes.

I didn't feel much whenever it was about the Basterds, I only enjoyed the interrogation at the farm house, they tavern scene, and the cafe/restaurant scenes.

It was shot beautiful but if I look at it in the terms you mentioned Django was put together a lot better, even if it had some scenes that I cringed at (Candyland was unsettling for me).

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Basterds
3. Kill Bill (pt1)
4. Django
5. Reservoir Dogs
6. Jackie Brown
7. Kill Bill (pt2)
8. Death Proof (haven't actually seen this!)

Pulp Fiction is practically perfect to me apart from the QT storyline with the dead body - I never got that at all: they're murderous gangsters working for Marcellus Wallace - why was it a big deal if his missus comes home and what she sees?

Or is it a seemingly pointless movie with one good character and two good sequences?

On 2nd viewing it became way worse to me, and it wasn't even that good to begin with.

The only argument I ever hear in favor of it usually revolves around its genre deconstruction and its subversion of genre expectation and blah blah blah.

I remember a lot of people around here who were defending it saying it's an intentionally bad movie, which makes it great.

Nah. Bad is bad. And even QT uses it in self-deprecating fashion when talking about his own work. He knows he crawled too far up his own ass for that one.

what makes it a pointless movie? were you waiting for something else to happen?

good dialogue, interesting characters, good action, nice homage to the genre, great music, Kurt Russel awesonesss...etc. shit is dope.

Jackie Brown
Inglorious Basterds
Kill Bill 2
Kill Bill 1
Pulp Fiction
Django Unchained
Reservoir Dogs
Death Proof

Kind of an interesting turn of events that basically everyone has Jackie Brown at or near #1, when I feel like the critical reception was pretty lukewarm when it dropped...

Django was just terrible. It was the end of Tarantino, and his first movie without Sally Menke. Without Sally, the magic is no longer there. Quentin is a cornball, and Sally did a hell of a job of hiding his corniness. Not no more. Some of the cuts in Django were embarrassing. Sally would never have let Quentin drop this version of Django.

But of the movies he directed:

1. Reservoir Dogs: Definitely have watched this the most of his films. Would go see it as a play if someone would perform it as one.

2. Pulp Fiction: LOVED it when it came out; kind of ambivalent about it now.
--
3/4. Kill Bill: Didn't love it but best of the rest.
5. Jackie Brown: Didn't land for me.
--
6. Basterds: Some of Tarantino's best scenes are in here and Waltz kills it but you could cut 90% of the Basterds out and I wouldn't mind.
7. Django: The least memorable of his films.
--
--
--
8. Death Proof: I should give this another chance but I hated it when I first saw it. But Winstead's "Gulp" was great.

I honestly love all these shits and if I were to watch any one of them today it would probably bump them up the list. For example, Death Proof used to be at the bottom until I saw it again recently and it shot all the way up the list.

I'm not a big fan of Inglourous Basterds. I wouldn't say I dislike it, but it's def my least favorite. That said, a couple scenes in it are absolutely masterful. some of his best work.

My top three just reminds me, I wish he'd get back to modern joints at some point.

a few scenes really stand out. The opening is fucking amazing. So was the bar scene. But other than that I thought it was a weak film. We know you can write dialogue already now can we have something else happen?I fell asleep in the middle of it at the movies. But I didnt think it was Death Proof bad.

1. Django
2. Basterds
3. Jackie Brown
4. Pulp Fiction
5. Death Proof
6. Reservoir Dogs
7/8. Kill Bill 1-2

The Kill Bills are the one's that I've watched the least over time. I hesitate to call them the worst as I definitely enjoyed them when they first came out, but I rarely go back to them.

The first 4 are always in semi-regular rotation.

I'm not a movie dude...which is kind of the point.

In 1994, that movie made 100 million and got nominated for Best Picture despite having a homosexual rape that was not even the most shocking element of its scene.

Once he got a better budget and more experience, he might have been able to write a tighter script or hire better actors and cinematographers. He has never come close to to recreating the emotional experience, because no one could. My boy and I ran back to Tufts from Harvard Yard because we were so excited that someone put THAT movie on that many scenes.

The reason we all love Tarantino, no matter which film made you fall in love, is Pulp Fiction.

Pulp Fiction and Star Wars are arguably the most influential films of my generation (I did graduate from Film School 10 years ago, so it's likely way different now). It's certainly what got me into him, and it's between that and Goodfellas for my favorite movies....but IMO Jackie Brown is a better film.

Doesn't hurt that it's highly underrated (off this board, it seems).

it was written, shot and edited as such. screened at cannes as intended. harvey chopping it in half for commercial reasons doesn't change that.

my order's basically the same as donnie's in reply 28, with KB and RD flipped. objectively, PF's the best thing he's done and ever will do. no need to overthink that one.

IB's close. an homage to film itself, and a masterpiece. incredibly fun, rewatchable, some of the best scenes he's ever written, and it features what's easily the best individual performance* in any of his flicks.

love JB. love it. really glad it's gained favor over the years, after getting something of the 'it was written' disappointing-follow-up-to-a-classic treatment for a while. i still find it funny that he sent the script to deniro for the bailbondsman character and bob calls him back like, no, i want to play THIS guy. the loser with no lines. lolz. i always wonder how the original concept would've played.

KB. epic. utterly engaging and satisfying from start to finish. the crazy 88s scene is fantastic, best thing he's ever shot. still not sure how carradine doesn't get a supporting actor nom. travesty.

RD is his 'college dropout'. moments of excellence, hints of what's to come, really enjoyable from a nostalgic standpoint, but surpassed and eclipsed by later works, and seams are visible if you look hard enough. still a fine piece of entertainment.

DU and DP bring up the rear, but both still really good films, somewhere in the 3-3.5 / 5 range. dude's oeuvre is a mother.

There are like 3 or 4 versions.

The first version he made is the Japanese version in 2 parts. Volume 1 and Volume 2. If you were to rearrange the movie in proper continuity the first 19 minutes are in black and white and the rest of the movie is in color and has slightly longer scenes. Basically much more RED blood.

The American version to avoid getting a pornographic rating was forced to make all the bloodiest scenes black and white and is slightly edited where there are long violent scenes. Making the running times shorter

QT then went back and made "The Whole Bloody Affair" version which he had wanted to be released to DVD. I think there was some thing with Disney and Miramax at the time where it messed that up. So it only was shown at Cannes once and that's the only showing of it.

7. Kill Bill
8. Death proof

He's gonna do two more films. I get it that he makes really fun action scenes and hilarious fight choreography....but I'd prefer he go in a dramatic lane to finish up.

1. Jackie Brown / Pulp Fiction - Jackie Brown is the better movie and has Sam Jackson's best performance, but Pulp Fiction is it's own genre and the better artistic statement.
3. Inglorious Basterds - The opening scene and Waltz's performance is the reason I rank this so high.
4. Django Unchained
5. Kill Bill 2
6. Kill Bill
7. Reservoir Dogs

Haven't seen Death Proof

Tarantino stats for 30 Okayplayers

1) Pulp Fiction --- Mean 1.97 (SD 1.16), Range 1-5, Median 2, IQR 1-2
2) Jackie Brown --- Mean 3.13 (SD 2.39), Range 1-8, Median 3, IQR 1-5
3) Kill Bill 1 --- Mean 3.53 (SD 1.67), Range 1-7, Median 4, IQR 3-4
4A) Inglorious Basterds --- Mean 4.50 (SD 2.21), Range 1-8, Median 5, IQR 2-6
4B) Kill Bill 2 --- Mean 4.50 (SD 1.91), Range 1-8, Median 5, IQR 3-7
6) Reservoir Dogs --- Mean 4.97 (SD 1.81), Range 1-8, Median 6, IQR 4-6
7) Django Unchained --- Mean 5.23 (SD 1.70), Range 1-8, Median 6, IQR 4-7
8) Death Proof --- Mean 6.20 (SD 1.63), Range 3-8, Median 8, IQR 5.5-8

Interesting facts:
- Pulp Fiction is the only movie no one rated lower than 5. Kill Bill 1 was the only other movie that was never rated 8th.

- Death Proof was the only movie that was never rated first (or even second) on anyone's list.

- Jackie Brown had the highest standard deviation, followed by Inglorious Basterds.

Methodology notes:
- For people who listed the Kill Bills together without distinction (or listed it as one movie), I ranked KB1 first and KB2 second.

- For people who hadn't seen a movie (Af-1, Hellyeah, obsidianchrysalis), I ranked their movies 1-7 instead of 1-8. For bshelly, I ranked Pulp Fiction #1 and left the rest blank.

I swapped the order for you, which changes things a bit:

Kill Bill 1: Mean 3.57 (SD 1.69), Range 1-7, Median 4 (IQR 3-5)
Kill Bill 2: Mean 4.47 (SD 1.92), Range 1-8, Median 5 (IQR 3-7)

This also moves KB2 into the 4th slot ahead of Basterds.

For other folks, most people (12 of 19) who specified a preference between the two Kill Bills listed Volume 1 higher, so I went with that.
