My review is going to be complicated by the fact that I think the original is
one of the most overrated films ever made, and so the only way to re-do it
well is to completely gut it and tell an actual story

The original is a messy, shitbrained, dumb wanna be mindfuck full of silly
random chaos and nonsensical jabber that somehow was branded artful by someone
white with no friends

If Spike guts this film and makes it an actual movie, he's forever maligned, and
he gets no major projects handed to him again

Literally the only thing he can do to please everyone is re-do this movie, keep
its essence (which is shitty), update it, give it a spin

The concept is cool IMO. The execution and actual story after the first 10 minutes became a joke.

Yup. From what I've heard of the actual comic book these movies are based on, had they stuck FAITHFULLY to the comics, I would've dug it more cause half of the craziness is gone or toned down.

From what I've heard it's the OG, just in English with more incest and violence.

I usually find something to love about every Spike Lee joint, as even his worst movies look and feel like Spike Lee.

This movie doesn't look or feel like Spike Lee. It's just a mess.

I was familiar with the twist going in (though even if I hadn't been, I feel like this film telegraphs it pretty plainly), and I'd seen the hammer fight on YouTube, but those are the only things I knew. Regarding the rest, I was a blank slate.

Brolin tries hard, and Olsen is per usual likable, but my oh my, Sharlto Copley is Razzie-worthy here. I'm generally appreciative of good ham, but this was an INSANE performance.

Bobbitt delivers some good cinematography... but tonally, the movie is all over the place, the plot is fairly one-note (these "investigate a past mystery" films generally are), the drunk/drug abuse thing has no real payoff, and it lapses into cartoonishness fairly often.

I have no idea how much of this is lifted from the original, or how much is Spike, or how much is just maybe this kind of movie not being my thing. But I didn't dig it... at all, really.

I'll add this, though, as a positive: it's in no way boring. One could argue (as Zoller Seitz did) that Lee seems to be channeling De Palma in many ways here, which I'd agree with. I just vastly prefer Lee to a subpar De Palma impression.

I don't know what kind of deal Spike was offered in return for this, but it better be good.

This is pretty much directly lifted from the original, with unnecessary changes throughout. As much as they want to claim they went back to the original Manga, those of you who have read it will wonder where that influence has gone, as well as why it looks so goddamn much like the original film.

- Joe's added backstory serves no purpose
- Changing 15 years to 20 seems like a change for the sake of changing
- There's a 'nod' to the octopus scene w/ Joe staring at a CGI octopus which also serves no purpose
- The hammer scene takes places on multiple levels because you know, changes, and is as stylized as you'd expect from a Hollywood remake.
- Marie is now a social worker because changes
- The twist is the same with the exception of the hypnosis. Instead Joe locks himself back up in the prison. Which makes for the movie's biggest plot hole as he went back to the prison to practically kill everybody there in the hammer scene.

Yes many of us do think for ourselves here and do it all the time.

Is it really our fault that you're too much of an idiotic sycophant to realize it?

Everyone knows that Infernal Affairs is a zillion times better than the departed.

The Departed was fine it just wasn't infernal affairs

Both needed some tweaks to the script. No complaints w/ Brolin, Olsen or Spike's direction. I just wish it was written better.

Brolin was great. I'm in love with Liz Olsen...she's incredibly talented and sexy as hell when she wants to be.

Spike's direction was adequate, but I don't know...it didn't feel like his heart was in it this go-round. I wonder if it really was 'just a check' for him.

Yeah, the script left a lot to be desired. They tried to condense the story and make it more accessible to American audiences. Also, part of the problem was that it didn't know what it wanted to be. Like Spike kept saying that he wanted to make it dark and ground it in reality, but the villains seemed like cartoon characters and the set pieces were campy as shit.

Didn't know that. It's not on IMDB & the articles seem to be a year old wonder if its scrapped.

Nothing is touching the original, so let them try. Maybe it'll spark people to see the original which is one of the most gorgeous movies I've ever seen. The lead actress is just so perfect in it. In a very strange way I relate to her HA

it's still in development. I'm at Charlize's imdbpro page and it's one of TEN projects she's working on....so who knows if and/or when it will come out?

the performances were fine.

Josh Brolin hasn't been this good since No Country For Old Men and in a weaker year for Best Actors in the Oscar race, I suspect he would have gotten some attention for this. And given that he tapped into some SERIOUS darkness which essentially landed him in rehab AGAIN....dude doesn't get enough respect for what he does and this was some fine work on his part.

everyone else turned in fine work.

I'm just not sure if this really needed to be remade...i'm still on the fence about it even now.

there's a three hour version of this? what?

If anything, Spike definitely enjoyed make dark genre films like this and this could be another chapter for him.

randomness: Oddly enough that PRISONERS, OLDBOY, and OUT OF THE FURNACE are the darkest genre offerings to come out during oscar season I just doubt anyone will be seriously turning in to see them....

but OLDBOY was made on a 30 million dollar budget and it may very well gross only 1.2 million dollars this weekend? Yea it's only out in 583 theaters. But still...

Open Road should have kept this in its original Halloween slot. I think it would have done better and at least recouped it's money...

Grade: B+/B-

Otherwise, this is a bomb

Spike Lee will be fine, and would have been fine regardless of the box office performance of this movie, a movie whose final cut neither he nor his lead seem to be pleased with

And let's be clear, when I say "he'll be fine," I mean he would still have to do the Hollywood shuffle of looking for financing for his projects, regardless of whether or not this movie was a hit

date, the movie would have done a lot better at the box office.

Cause, real talk, who wants to see a graphic ass, bleak, revenge thriller the day after thanksgiving?

And it's going up against the second Hunger Games?

And FROZEN?

Oldboy was destined to FLOP and FLOP HARD.

I still am on the fence about whether or not this needed to be remade, but I felt like I was watching Spike enter in a whole new genre of film...and on screen, it looked like he enjoyed making the movie.

SO Spike Lee doing darker fare he doesn't write or if it's shit he writes and it's dark and violent...i'm in.

It sucks because the Protosevich is, arguably, one of, if not the best dark genre/horror screenwriters working. And this was a solid screenplay from him...

not really. I mean, they hadn't run any ads the week leading up to the release.

YET...when the movie was slated to come out Halloween, ads were popping up everywhere, at least where I live.

it seems like Film District/Open Road just gave up and didn't care about the movie.

Who knows?

killer klowns from outer space was a better film than this piece of shit. fifty years from now this joint will be on mystery science theater 6000. and i like spike and had no agenda going into watching this.

i'm not even going to critically review this. the pacing was completely off, the script was cringe-worthy, but my favorite fuckup of this movie was the fight choreography. i was cracking up during the hammer fight, which is probably the worst adapted scene of all time. if you pay attention to the fighters, they bump into each other and fall down, purposefully swing at the fence two feet away from him, and attack one by one while getting sliced up by a hammer. it's like a clumsy dance scene.

the gore was over the top and unnecessary, the only redeeming quality was elisabeth olsen nude but that was almost ruined by the whole incest mood-killer and minutes worth of manbutt to make up for gratuitous female nudity.

i would've enjoyed this film if it went full ham. towards the end i realized this movie would be GOAT with ashton kutcher as adrian and nicolas cage as joe. as it is though, the oldboy remake is just a testament to how bad a film can be.

but it did look better and Brolin and Olsen held it down.

there were minor tweaks on the OG, and by minor really MINOR, but overall the og revenge plot is some of the stupidest shit I've ever seen.

OG Hammer scene >>> then remake Hammer scene

Brolin kicking the shit out of football players >>> than anything in the OG

and Longo wasn't exaggerating about Copley. its fucn funny watching him

I don't see what there is to be mad about here (and yeah I don't see what there is to be excited about, either, because it's a remake of a really crappy film).

Josh Brolin seemed to be trying really hard. I appreciated that. Spike Lee went way outside of his comfort zone to try and mimic the heavily stylized original. Nothing stood out as terrible, except that it's a very good remake of a terrible movie.

If anyone is a fan of the original but watched the Spike Lee version and thought, "boy that sucked!" then really all you're reacting to is finally seeing this shitty movie for what it is, without subtitles and actors with foreign names, finally revealing the film in the plain light of day.
