I love this comic.
According to Rick, we are at the halfway-point, of this epic.

THIS STORY IS ON POINT TO BECOME A CLASSIC.
I see it leading to next summer's event.
One rumored to be spearheaded by, Rick.

Post-GODBOMB it was nice to have a breather issue where we could just chill and examine Thor's relationship to humanity. I don't think I've ever read a Thor issue quite like this. Felt like the type of thing a Superman writer will occasionally try to do, but like, 10000x more metal

And I've read some of the Westerns too. Probably my favorite author.

It's late but ill contribute tomorrow. For starters, "Stick" is the sequel to "Swag" , and it's pretty good, though not exactly heavy on the action.

"Rum Punch" (which was the basis for Jackie Brown") is my favorite novel by him. "Pronto" and "Riding the Rap", two of the inspirations for Justified, (along with the "Fire in the Hole" short story) are also really, really good.

But yeah, I'll be back tomorrow.

I've heard they're all great. I'm going to get to them, eventually. Reading "Djibouti" right now, about 100 pages in. It's going to suck that's the final non-western of his that I'll ever read.

25. "Okay, here we go:"
In response to Reply # 18

His best stuff:
Rum Punch
Pronto
Riding the Rap
The Hot Kid
LaBrava
Glitz (the book that made him huge)
Cuba Libre
52 Pick-Up
Tshimingo Blues
Pagan Babies

The next tier (still excellent):
Unknown Man #89
City Primeval
Big Bounce
Cat Chaser
Freaky Deaky
Swag
Stick
Mr. Paradise
Maximum Bob
Mr. Majestk

Very good, but sorta problematic:
Get Shorty (never loved the book, though I loved the movie)
Out of Sight (another case where I actually like the movie better)
Split Images
Killshot

The enjoyable but kind of slight:
Moonshine War
Gold Coast
The Hunted
Switch

Just okay:
Bandits (his follow-up to "Glitz". His longest and most character-driven book. Doesn't quite come together in the end)
Touch
Road Dogs (ostensibly a sequel to "Out of Sight", but also a sort-of sequel to "LaBrava" and "Riding the Rap")

The not-so-good/bad:
Be Cool (sequel to "Get Shorty")
Up in Honey's Room (sequel to "The Hot Kid". Might be his worst book)
Raylan (sequel to "Fire in the Hole" that he started to write after "Justified" got green-lit)

Noticing a pattern here? Outside of "Rum Punch" and "Stick," the out-right sequels that he writes tend to suck.

I think that covers mostly everything I've read. Reading "Djiboutti" right now, so I can't rank it yet. And I haven't read his kid's book, but I hear it's good.

I remember you speaking highly of Leonard so I was hoping you would chime in, but this is above and beyond, sir. Thank you so much.

I went ahead and put Stick on hold at the library yesterday, seeing as how Swag was fresh on my mind. Good to know a.) it's not terrible and b.) there's a whole 'nother tier of great books waiting for me when that one's done

I'll probably stick with his crime stuff for a bit then move on to the westerns, so thanks for the roadmap!

Quite the opposite.
Only complaint?
The cliffhanger endings in FF...
DOPE BUT need next issue resolutions.
The F4 Ben Franklin issue way damn cool.
Frac Attack, takes his time and goes heavy on the dialog.
The payouts are always worth it.

Hi everybody, new guy here! Just wanted to to chime in on FF - I've been picking it up since #1 (and I only get a few books each month), considered dropping it early on but then it got its hooks in me. Found myself laughing a lot and caring about what happened with the characters. I want to live in the world that Mike Allred sees.

Also noticed that it's a rare mainstream, in-continuity title that isn't made specifically for grown-ups so I started reading it with my kid a week ago. We're up to issue 8, he loves it and I'm appreciating it from a whole new angle - kinda liking this team better than the F4.

PS Not sure how many of you are in your upper 30s like me but when Darla Deering got the Thing Rings, my childhood collided with my adulthood in a way I had not expected - totally forgot about The Thing cartoon!

I think both titles would make excellent reads, with kids.
FF is the stronger book in my opinion. Bentley, cracks me up.

I suspect we all do.

Except, possibly, for the Mormonism thing. Though it obviously works for him and plenty of others.

>Also noticed that it's a rare mainstream, in-continuity title

Hmmm, haven't been reading it but that might be worth a look.

I did give my kids Batman 66 and they liked it.

Just starting my 3 y.o. on DC Superfriends and Tiny Titans... he's into it.

No idea what the Thing Rings are though.

Thanks for the welcome guys, been lurking for awhile and thought I should join in. Got back into comics 2 years ago when I started taking my then 4 y.o. to our LCS, ended up buying more stuff for me!

I've been reading Waid/Samnee's Daredevil, FF and have just added Trillium and Batman '66 to my monthly stack as well as assorted issues that seem appealing (couple of Hawkeye's here and there). Also been grabbing some trades/gn's like Underwater Welder (agreed that it was great), Tale of Sand, Saga, Y the Last Man, Casanova. The library's been great for catching up on everything I've missed in the last 15-20 years - got the Fraction F4 trade from the library, started there with my son and then kept going into my FF floppies. Can't wait to show him the microtiger and this recent Impossible Boy issue.

It was really Tiny Titans that inspired our diving into comics, we were picking that up every month and now are devoted followers of everything Baltazar/Franco produce (Itty Bitty Hellboy had him even more engaged than he was with Superman Family Adv.) We also collect Marvel's Oz books, Bone, and Zita the Spacegirl.

>No idea what the Thing Rings are though.
Check this bit of wonderfulness out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64Jv8zbUsf4

Again, thanks for the welcome - I'll try to join in more often.

I need to drop those guys a note about the ads for M+ games though. Inappropriate. (Yes, it's HELLboy, but still...)

If you can find 'em, their Patrick the Wolf=Boy books are good too.

>We also collect Marvel's Oz books, Bone,

just finished the Bone one-volume with the kids. Think I'm giong to make re-reading it every summer a ritual. I got a little teary-eyed.

The two Zita volumes (I think that's all there are) are awesome too.

Tons of other good stuff for that age range and I'm looking forward to when I think my oldest is mature enough to read things like Sardine, the Matt Phelan books, Tintin, Asterix, etc.

I 100% agree with this, we definitely rushed by those pages and I hid the back cover as soon as I noticed him getting freaked out by those evil clowns. Seems like somebody at Dark Horse might have noticed the huge disparity between the content on the front/back covers! Might be worth waiting for it to be collected sans ads.

>If you can find 'em, their Patrick the Wolf=Boy books are good

I'm aware of these but have never seen them anywhere, I should look for that as a Halloween treat...

Also just gave the boy the first volume of Terra Tempo for his first day of 1st grade. I picked it up from the artist at Stumptown Comics Fest here in Portland and he sketched a mastodon in it!

wrt Super Dinosaur... 'all ages' book with graphic ads for 'mature readers only' books in it. He responded nicely and seems to have taken the suggestion. Unfortunately that book turned out to be not *quite* as all ages as I thought so we wound up dropping it. (The kid's 8 now, so he's probably more ready for it now than he was at 6.)

I grabbed the last few my shop had. Very much in line with their stuff, my only complaint was one 'crap' which I just marked over in my boy's copy. But I'm kinda sensitive to that.

Never heard of it, but comics + mastodons is a great match... my oldest is an aspiring paleontologist (like most kids), so we've tried Super Dinosauur, even the awful Jurassic Strike Force 5... of course he loved it.

It's like the superheroes fighting each other on first meeting then teaming up to stop the villain. That part is just a plot device, I'm more interested in the smaller moments, like the Xorn reveal and young Jean trying to convince Hank to leave then settling for Cyclops when Beast wouldn't bite. Can't wait to see what comes of that.

Finally reading those Kamandi issues I copped from Comixology's 99¢ sale a while back, right as his Captain America Omnibus shows up on my hold list at the library.

Goddamn.

The Kamandi stuff is just ridiculously beautiful and imaginative. With as much power this book has, I'm wondering how it's not currently a top-selling book or big movie franchise. There's so much here that just *works*.

The Cap stuff I'm reading is a bit more raw (I'm noticing what a huge difference a decent inker makes), feels more dated, but every bit as balls out insane. If you like what Remender and JRJR are doing with the current book, you gotta check out this run. I'm kinda hoping Falcon shows up in the new book on account of how great he is in this.

Something I've been figuring out since I got into the Fourth World stuff is that I think I prefer Kirby when they just more or less let him do his thing. The characters and worlds he created with Stan are timeless, but there's something about just being fully immersed in that raw, uncut Kirby Krackle that I love.

it's to the point of having a spiritual experience reading it
the guy loved comics and creating them, and he didn't have an off switch

First, Orson Scott Card.
Now editorial nixing a gay wedding.
Batwoman. Lesbian.
Williams and Blackman, walked out on the book.
Cited editorial disputes over, Kate's wedding.
And numerous last minute editorial changes.

DC: Get with the times.
Embrace change and homosexuality.

In short, FUCK BIGOT DC COMICS.

i think you're jumping to comclusions.

i'm not sure if DC are anti-gay marriage so much as they don't want to marry their characters off.

it's about not wanting any of their characters to be married, which is even dumber than going out of the way to retrofit characters as gay

because with the rationale that heterosexual marriage is normal, not allowing it to happen to anyone of significance in your character stable, and not minding losing talent to be hardnosed about it, strikes me as not only silly but shortsighted

It's insane... not so much a comic book as 140 or so one-page strips focusing on (so far) bizarre and sommetimes completely made up facets of urban living and architecture. It's a constant small chuckle, good bathroom book or bedtime book since you can stoop after any page.

If you've read any of his other books (though I think I'm the only one I've seen referenced here) each strip is like a whole Katchor book boiled down to a few panels.

I like it.

which was kinda fun... didn't do much to rekindle my wanderlust though. Except for where *SPOILERS* he hooks up with the Swedish chick. Hubba hubba.

I can see why after his experiences in Morocco though Habibi came out so ambiguous and often negative about the mishmash of Middle Eastern culture he presented.
