Overall, I was bored. I felt like the main problem was that they explained a ton of stuff but established no rules. I don't need to know the aether's backstory, I need to know how its power is unleashed. Instead of "If Person A gets Object B to Point C, the world will be over," this film was "Don't let Person A get Object B. Shit, he got it. Well, uh, don't let him get it to Point C. Dammit, he's there. Well, he has to be there at Time D. Oops. Um... fuck it, just kill him while he's releasing it because apparently that can still happen."
Also, half of the stuff that they established in the first scene was thrown out the window later. For instance, Obadisi becomes The Kursed and is told that nobody can stop him. There is no weapon that could kill him. But in the first scene, there was like a dozen of those Kursed dudes and they got mowed down relatively easily.
Another example is that Thor, upon first learning of the aether, pulls out of his ass the idea that the aether will be weaker when not bound to someone, therefore he'll be able to destroy it. Let me repeat, his plan is to hit an all-powerful ether with a hammer and destroy it. This is made even more bizarre because in the very first scene of the film we were already told that the aether can't be destroyed, yet we are still supposed to root for Thor to get out of Asgaard so he can put his plan into action, even though we know it's a fool's errand.
The opening scene also showed Malekith trying to end the world from his universe. Yet in the modern day, he decides that he has to go to Earth. Is there a reason for this? Nope. And because there's no reason for our heroes to figure out, they can only explain the heroes going to Earth by saying Jane caught a glimpse of Earth because apparently that happens when the aether shifts from one person to another.
And then we have the Final Battle. The initial plan? Delay Malekith 7 minutes so he can't destroy every universe at the same time. But wouldn't delaying him just annoy him and make him destroy Earth and then move on to the other universes one by one? You really need to do better than a primary objective of "Kill time so he'll have to kill us all one by one" And they also put all of the portals in a circle, Malekith's ship enters the circle... and then... they wait for everyone to unload and then start using the things. Why not throw one at the ship and see if that works? Why not hit them all when the ship is in the middle? Why not have some stated plan besides "Put them there." I was astounded at how they got zero tension out of the setting up of the scheme. It was just a jumbled montage and random expository dialogue with one shot of people actually placing the portals in place. Of course, the scheme was so poorly fleshed out that I guess it was hard to get tension out of it. Then the battle begins and the "7 minutes" makes the runway scene in Fast and Furious 6 seem realistic. While I liked the humor of the movie, when you're having your big final fight scene in which every second counts because they are seven minutes away from doom and then you have Thor have to take a subway for three stops to get back to the fight, your humor is working against your tension. Also, if you're going to set a specific clock on something, you have to show that clock counting down. The film should have gone with a non-specific clock; just show the universes slowly coming into alignment, something you can cut back to now and then to heighten the tension but not sticking you with a set amount of time.
Anyway, Malekith FINALLY unleashes the aether we've been hearing about all movie and... holy shit is it slow. I mean, it doesn't even bring darkness to Earth! How was it supposed to reach all seven universes in the short window it had. And at that point, the good guys decide, "Well, what if we portal Malekith somewhere?" I mean, he is now in possession of the power that people said would bring the end of the world and a force that zapped the shit out of people for even touching Jane when she was bound by it but apparently when you're sicking it on the 7 universes, you're basically just a sitting duck.
So Thor rushes in, portals Malekith out of there which apparently means the aether doesn't do a goddamned thing, doesn't attempt to bind with anyone else, and can apparently get shopvacced into a little box, no problem. Which they then hand over to creepy Benicio Del Toro. Instead of putting it back where it used to be.
As good as Marvel is with origin movies, they are pretty bad when it comes to second features. And it's odd because two of the best superhero movies are Marvel properties - X2 and Blade 2 - both of which used the same concept - major evil forces hero and foe to unite.
This makes me more nervous for Captain America 2, especially because I think that film is going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting towards Avengers 2, unless there's simply no tie-in between the other phase 2 movies and Avengers 2 (which I find hard to believe.) ---- NBA MOCK DRAFT #1 - https://thecourierclass.com/whole-shebang/2017/5/18/2017-nba-mock-draft-1-just-lotto-and-lotta-trades
