"What is the longest film you have sat through?"

As the title says what is the longest film you have watched? We are not talking multiple episodes of dvd box sets, I mean film. I ask because last night I watched the four hour version of Cleopatra with Liz Taylor and Dick Burton. And the version I saw was an hour short of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's director cut.

And boy did the film need editing. Still it was certainly epic in certain places.

The first time I ever saw it was the redux version and I picked out every additional scene. they were bad, but they obviously fucked up the flow.

bad acting, bad story, bad themes, bad photography, really bad fake ping pong playing, oh man it's so bad.

I guess if you're one of those people that really, really likes to fantasize about humping attractive Hollywood people (like, say, Woody Allen), you can get by staring into the vacant eyes of Scarlett Johansen and Jonathan Rys-Myers, but if you're looking to actually enjoy a film for its merits besides the fuckability of its leads, I recommend Die Hard.

I saw this last month and thought it was fucking brilliant. Jimmy Woods smashes it. But the last hour is all wrong but the first 3/4 are quite staggeringly good.

And compared to Cleopatra Once Upon A Time In America flew by.

My aunt forced me to watch it. Hyped it up to me for years, and then one day I visited and she forced me to watch. I don't know how I didn't fall asleep.

I would've said Seven Samurai but I broke that movie up over three days.

by quickly. No arty dead time in the story. I watched the first 3 hours one night, then the last 3 the next. Each sitting felt like 100 minutes each. I found it really engrossing.

Don't know how the miniseries was split up on Italian tv, but you probably could find good spots to break up the viewing in each half.

one 15-minute break, an hour dinner break, and a bathroom break. The movie's Satantango. I don't recommend it.

I've seen longer movies than Satantango, but watched them in multiple sittings spread throughout days. Sometimes even weeks.

But, the longest movie I saw in literally one sitting was A Brighter Summer Day coming in at a couple of minutes shy of 4 hours. Currently, my favorite film of all-time.

You should have said it was an Edward Yang film and you would have got a lot more response. Yi Yi is certainly a favourite among many peple on the board. Yi Yi is my second favourite film after Charade. Yi Yi comes in at almost three hours but i'll now definitely check A Brighter Summer Day, four hours will probably seem like a breeze.

I can't wait to see people's response to the film when the Criterion comes out. ABSD and The Terrorizer are so different from Yi Yi that they might surprise / shock people.

The first halve goes by fast. And it's two 2hr parts with a 30 minute intermission. I saw it as a whole movie when it had that limited run in NYC. Went opening day with expectations high...

It's really too bad that I didn't know the 2nd half was going to suck as much as it did. I figured b/c the 1st half was so good that even though it was going to be a different style it'd be just as entertaining.

A special showing of The Godfather: The Complete Epic, which showed Parts I and II chronologically about 12 years ago. Shit clocked in around 6.5 hours, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Also Redux, which felt every bit like damn near four hours. Return of the King and Alexander. All I remember from that one is my mom (yes, I saw Alexander with my mom) asking if it was almost over and me saying, "don't forget, they haven't even shown the elephants yet". all she could say was "shit". and my mom doesn't even curse like that.
