468469, What is the longest film you have sat through?
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Tue Aug-11-09 10:43 AM
As the title says what is the longest film you have watched? We are not talking multiple episodes of dvd box sets, I mean film. I ask because last night I watched the four hour version of Cleopatra with Liz Taylor and Dick Burton. And the version I saw was an hour short of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's director cut.

And boy did the film need editing. Still it was certainly epic in certain places.
468475, Apolcalypse Now Redux?
Posted by stylez dainty, Tue Aug-11-09 11:09 AM
That's 4 hours plus right?
468482, ^^^ My choice
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Aug-11-09 11:29 AM
I had fun sitting through that shit in Century City, though

468485, I love that film, so it was really interesting, but I prefer the theatrical cut
Posted by stylez dainty, Tue Aug-11-09 11:33 AM
468487, I agree with you
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Aug-11-09 11:41 AM
Maybe I'm just used to the faster pace of the 153-minute version but it plays much better...

468789, I agree...the 'added' scenes stick out like sore thumb IMO
Posted by The Analyst, Wed Aug-12-09 01:21 PM
The first time I ever saw it was the redux version and I picked out every additional scene. they were bad, but they obviously fucked up the flow.
468492, No it's like 3 hrs 20 mins
Posted by Deebot, Tue Aug-11-09 11:50 AM
468495, Ahh, guess my longest must be something else.

468476, long like time-wise or long like it would never end?
Posted by celery77, Tue Aug-11-09 11:10 AM
Match Point was probably the "longest" film I've ever sat through, except I'm lying, I actually got up and started doing chores around the house after a while because I got so sick of that piece of fucking shit crap film.
468479, Why don't you tell us how you really feel about the film
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Tue Aug-11-09 11:24 AM
Ha ha, I haven't seen Match Point and probably never will now.

It's one of the Good Wood movies (pause) and is arguably his best in a decade or so...

468483, man, that's ~15h of his life he can NEVER HAVE BACK
Posted by celery77, Tue Aug-11-09 11:33 AM
bad acting, bad story, bad themes, bad photography, really bad fake ping pong playing, oh man it's so bad.

I guess if you're one of those people that really, really likes to fantasize about humping attractive Hollywood people (like, say, Woody Allen), you can get by staring into the vacant eyes of Scarlett Johansen and Jonathan Rys-Myers, but if you're looking to actually enjoy a film for its merits besides the fuckability of its leads, I recommend Die Hard.
468760, i watched it on an airplane in hopes to see Scarlet's biddies...
Posted by FortifiedLive, Wed Aug-12-09 10:51 AM
fail. i didn't see what was so great about the movie either.
468484, Coincidently also one of my all time fav films...

468489, Once Upon A Time In America
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Tue Aug-11-09 11:47 AM
>Once Upon A Time In America - 3 hours 40 mins

I saw this last month and thought it was fucking brilliant. Jimmy Woods smashes it. But the last hour is all wrong but the first 3/4 are quite staggeringly good.

And compared to Cleopatra Once Upon A Time In America flew by.
468496, Yeah i didnt feel like any part of it dragged
Posted by Jimbo Jones, Tue Aug-11-09 11:56 AM
for a film that long to do that is fucking incredible

and yeah Woods was great
468581, that would be mine. good stuff

My aunt forced me to watch it. Hyped it up to me for years, and then one day I visited and she forced me to watch. I don't know how I didn't fall asleep.

I would've said Seven Samurai but I broke that movie up over three days.
468491, Hamlet. Kenneth Branagh version.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Aug-11-09 11:50 AM
about 4 hrs, including an intermission.
468494, Anyone seen that super duper long Italian movie from a few years ago?
Posted by stylez dainty, Tue Aug-11-09 11:53 AM
Supposed to be like 7 hours or something. I actually think it got really good reviews.

Found it, Best of Youth.

And an interesting list:

468553, Highly recommended. There's a lot of plot and the time flew
Posted by Sponge, Tue Aug-11-09 02:44 PM
by quickly. No arty dead time in the story. I watched the first 3 hours one night, then the last 3 the next. Each sitting felt like 100 minutes each. I found it really engrossing.

Don't know how the miniseries was split up on Italian tv, but you probably could find good spots to break up the viewing in each half.
468499, The Return of the King extended edition
Posted by simpsycho, Tue Aug-11-09 12:15 PM
I know it was at least four hours.
469301, that's mine too
Posted by MadDagoNH, Fri Aug-14-09 01:12 PM
I watched all three extended editions in one day a few years back. It was pretty epic.

I got delivery for lunch and dinner. Good times.

468541, Synecdoche, New York felt like 12 hours.
Posted by FortifiedLive, Tue Aug-11-09 02:33 PM
468561, I saw a 7.5 hr movie in about an 8 hr 39 min "sitting"
Posted by Sponge, Tue Aug-11-09 02:56 PM
one 15-minute break, an hour dinner break, and a bathroom break. The movie's Satantango. I don't recommend it.

I've seen longer movies than Satantango, but watched them in multiple sittings spread throughout days. Sometimes even weeks.

But, the longest movie I saw in literally one sitting was A Brighter Summer Day coming in at a couple of minutes shy of 4 hours. Currently, my favorite film of all-time.

468719, A Brighter Summer Day
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Wed Aug-12-09 07:39 AM
You should have said it was an Edward Yang film and you would have got a lot more response. Yi Yi is certainly a favourite among many peple on the board. Yi Yi is my second favourite film after Charade. Yi Yi comes in at almost three hours but i'll now definitely check A Brighter Summer Day, four hours will probably seem like a breeze.

I can't wait to see people's response to the film when the Criterion comes out. ABSD and The Terrorizer are so different from Yi Yi that they might surprise / shock people.

The first halve goes by fast. And it's two 2hr parts with a 30 minute intermission. I saw it as a whole movie when it had that limited run in NYC. Went opening day with expectations high...

It's really too bad that I didn't know the 2nd half was going to suck as much as it did. I figured b/c the 1st half was so good that even though it was going to be a different style it'd be just as entertaining.
469158, yeah, i caught this during it's roadshow
Posted by Villain, Thu Aug-13-09 07:38 PM
the intermission was like ten minutes at the theater i was at.

A special showing of The Godfather: The Complete Epic, which showed Parts I and II chronologically about 12 years ago. Shit clocked in around 6.5 hours, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Also Redux, which felt every bit like damn near four hours. Return of the King and Alexander. All I remember from that one is my mom (yes, I saw Alexander with my mom) asking if it was almost over and me saying, "don't forget, they haven't even shown the elephants yet". all she could say was "shit". and my mom doesn't even curse like that.
