"Leo Dicaprio = the ANTI-Johnny Depp"

Leo got pigeonholed unfairly as a pretty-boy-heart-throb

Depp got pigeonholed unfairly as an intense-serious-master-
of-his-craft-prodigy

Leo is consistently the best thing about movies he's
in, and is usually praised for his performances, but
not enough(e.g. He was the only good thing about that
borefest, 'The Departed'. What a shitty film).

Depp is consistently over-praised for decent or mediocre
performances(e.g. 'Finding Neverland')in movies where
his performance is actually inconsequential

Despite his rep, Leo actually turns in the involved,
intense, powerful performances(e.g. Aviator, Revo Road
etc)

Despite his rep, Depp actually turns in trite, stupid,
fluff performances in meaningless, pop movies:
(Chocolate Factory, Pirate shits)

Very interesting.

I just seen 'The Aviator' again. Shit put me to sleep,
again, but the nigga Decap was on his game. Ole boy can
act.

Depp? Fluffball.

Jack is jack, matt damon was great, mark wahlberg and alec baldwin had almost cameo roles but were still memorable.

I've haven't seen an outstanding leo performance since the basketball diaries but if nothing else from what i hear about him he is a hard working movie star, in that besides just acting in a film he is actively involved in getting movies financed and greenlit.
this is apparently one of the reasons he has worked with scorsese a lot recently

you have to respect anyone that doesn't just turn up and collect a paycheck

i'd say all were top 10 performances in their respective yrs.

dicap dogg is one of the best of his generation, easily. dood's been putting it the fuck down consistently since the "gilbert grape/boy's life/basketball diaries" era, i don't see how his credentials are even still in question. i still think a lot of his biggest haters haven't ever gotten over their unrequited high school crush having his titanic poster up in her locker + shit.

I've not seen revo road but the other three were ok performances, not oustanding. Im not saying he is a bad actor but as a leading man i never go to the cinema to see a film on the strength of his top billing blowing me away. In fact when i went to see the first 3 in that list it was because i felt he filled out a nice ensemble cast.

a more interesting question, may i ask everyone is in those 4 films is he the best actor/actress in any of those films?

because if you don't understand he was FANTASTIC in The Departed, Aviator, and Blood Diamonds, you don't have one iota of an understanding of craft, subtlety, and technique when it comes to acting

and are letting your juvenile impulses guide your viewing

seriously, you don't understand great acting, at all

Wahlberg walked around and shouted cuss words. That's
what he did the entire movie. That's it. Nothing more.

And I know artsy fartsies that said he could have gotten
a best supporting nod for that....LMAO....he was fucking
terrible in that movie.

And Jack?

LOL

He basically just walked around and played Jack and said
stupid philosophical slick shit the whole movie. His
character was cartoonish and stupid

Leo was the only significant actor in that movie, period.

IMO, Wahlberg and Baldwin had the great lines...they didn't have much to do besides deliver great lines.

I really liked Leo in The Departed.

He was tortured. I have cousins like that, and he had them locked. People can judge his character, or his acting, but I'm telling you...Leo won.

After a few decades of Mob movies, comedians, cynicism, etc... it's easy for us to deliver one-liners. The delivery of sarcastic one-liners is an art that was perfected and easily mastered long ago. RIP Lenny Briscoe.

The only person in that movie that let their nuts hang was Damon...who was way out of his "working class, boy next door" posturing.

Leo rocked it.

Sheen was great, too. Yeah, he was cool as hell, but as far as stretching, all the director had to tell him was "Act like the father figure you had or wish you had".

Leo carried a lot of A-listers on the back of his stretch character. The A-listers did their thing GREAT, but no stretch. Shit, I wish I could get paid delivering cynical, sarcastic cracks.

Leo won.

No, if you play a stupid character well, you look
stupid. I can't be giving praise to people for portraying
dumb, poorly written characters as dumb and poorly written.

I mean, goddamn. Sam Jackson was "good" in 'Snakes On
a Plane'.

Colin Farrel might have been as "good" as the 'Alexander'
script allowed him. The character sucked, and Farrel sucked
as a sucky character. Might not have been his fault, but he
still sucked.

Let's not use double standards just because its Jack
Nicholson. If he looks stupid playing a stupid character
its still stupid.

>Same can be said for Wahlberg.

Sure, he did a good job of portraying a stupid
character.

Good for him.

Both are great actors, but Leo just don't have the magic.

Leo's not touching Depp's rolls in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ed Wood & Edward Scissorhands.

other than that, I'm always looking forward in each persons project.

He needs to take on some hard living, get Rourked, because he just never looks like he should be playing someone out of their 20s. I don't think his chops can be denied at this point, although he can overdo it with the intensity sometimes, but he just looks too young for some of these roles, kind of like how they do with these early 20 something actresses that are always portraying mature women, like Holmes in Batman Begins.

Dude still looks like and comes across as a kid.

watching revolutionary road or the aviator, its clearly evident. those roles required actors who were men, not boys.

As a lead male actor, you must represent strength and come across that way in your role, as a man, on top of your acting.

Leo fails in this category, despite his good acting skills.

Leo got the chops, he just aint got the nads, no homo.

J. Depp is overrated. Once he got that tag of "instense-great-actor" it stuck. He is kinda weird, and plays weird characters. So that just adds more to his myth.

every choice Leo made in Revo Road was a dissertation on how to invest and define the shape and emotional life of a character. how he leered at Winslett, how he drank his from his cups tense and anxious, how held his shoulders and placed his hands in dialogues

lofl, at this "critiques"

i know you hate that nigga + i'm wasting keystrokes, but he's got a number of great perfs under his belt, and technique-wise his choices are almost always interesting, even when they don't work (a la hopper, walken, nicholson, benny del toro, oldman, etc)

This is what I mean. Nigga that ain't no point. You just
making reasons up to like Johnny Depp.

If he sucks, he sucks. Like someone else said in this post,
his range isn't really that good and his latest shit is trite,
fluff, bullshit.

Don't give me this "technique" shit. If he sucks he sucks.

And he often sucks.

Ole choosing fluff ass roles ass nigga

Nope

He plays a "quirky"/ostentatiously weird character in every movie.

the flaw in your theory is you clearly prefer the movies Leo has been in
and unfortunately those movies show he simply isnt up to par

meanwhile
Depp frequently plays in movies below his skill level which up his par

they are both matched in the end
also you missed that Depp was and continues to be a heart throb

Leo lost his looks and so lost the running for heart anything

E Sissorhands
Donnie Brasco
Fear & Loathing
Chocolat
Blow
From Hell
Once Upon A Time In Mexico
and Sweeny Todd

is silliness. And not I'm not talking about the quality of those movies, but his performances, which are varied, stood out, and nuanced in each

he, like Al and Deniro has gotten hella lazy, and his script choices have been turrbl

I agree, Depp is an outstanding actor, but actually just came across this post after watching Aviator and trying to find the movie post and see OKP thoughts.

Original post made in 09 tho, they were pretty close at that time. Johnny had Sweeney Todd but mostly fluff since then, while Leo's had a lot better roles/movies the past 5 years and is winning now. I get intrigued about any Leo film nowadays and it might help he is careful about choosing films and doesn't make very many. If I hear a Depp movie is coming out, Im rarely interested nowadays.
