"Is The Koln Concert the most beautiful jazz record ever?" Thu Nov-09-17 07:22 PM by hip bopper
Keith’s improvisation was second to none on that record. There are some beautiful pieces in the realm of jazz, but this one is the most beautiful album in jazz.
Bare in mind that I’m not saying that this is the best jazz record ever even though a case can be made for it.
Feel free to say what you think is the most beautiful record.

but IT WAS SOME SHIT. Jazz is one of those genres where it's easy to record a quality album in a day or two, so you have tons of albums you could qualify so I won't go there in regards to beauty. But I like his playing on this more than anything else he did.

Looking a some of the documentary about Miles and what he put into his music. Also Mingus who would fuck you up if you weren’t playing right... but yeah he was on some shit when he did this.
a lot of those Blue Note albums were cut in a single afternoon, or over the course of a few days. Jazz isn't like other forms of music that rely on recording technology to get its point across, it's more about how the band synchronizes and understands one another moreso than studio dynamics.

remember jazz is based on spontanaeity and improvisation.

8. "I can possibly see this if they have rehearsed prior to recording" In response to Reply # 7
Yes if they are doing something spontaneous then absolutely.
This is my thought behind this... if you have more individuals recording with you i.e. an octet or orchestra vs. a quartet, duo, or solo venture then that would vary in recording time?
Also could this be varied between artists. I remember an interview with Kamasi talking about how the recording of The Epic took awhile... mainly because there were other project being done as the same time.
9. "oh yes there's always variables, no question" In response to Reply # 8
but if you look up some of these albums you'll find they were recorded over a weekend. Thelonious Monk was known for having to be forced to do multiple takes of his songs, but he always picked the first take more often than not.

I’ve never gotten into him all that much. A record here and there. I’ve always listened to Keith, Herbie, Gil, Lonnie and Matthew for a majority of my listening on jazz piano as far a leaders go.
